Water for the Eagle River-Chugiak area is provided by private, subdivision and trailer court wells. Data from these wells were stud-ied to determine aquifer materials, yield, well depth and depth to water.
The aquifer material is unconsolidated glacial or alluvial gravel and sand and bedrock from the McHugh Complex, the unnamed metamorphic complex and the Kenai Formation. The median well yield for bedrock wells is 2 gallons per minute and the median well yield for wells completed in unconsolidated aquifers is 10 gallons per minute. Well depths may vary widely where wells are drilled into bedrock or glacial till but are more uniform where wells are drilled into alluvial gravels and sand. A continuous water table is not defined in the Eagle River-Chugiak area.

Abundant stream runoff and the prospects for expanded well-field development in the Jap Creek alluvial fan, as well as other similar fans, allow a selection of future water sources based on factors other than the availability of the natural resource. Although water in both streams and deep aquifers is of good potable quality, ground water has the inherent advantages of being free of suspended sediment, of being warmer during winter months, and of being less vulnerable to pollution. Shallow infiltration galleries constructed along the alluvial-fan reaches of some streams should provide large volumes of water for public supply.
A potential exists at Seward for serious flooding of the alluvial fans by the major streams, for coastal flooding by bay waters resulting from storm-driven waves or tsunamis, and for pollution of shallow ground water by onsite sewage disposal.

The triangular deep-water region lies at the junction of the Bering shelf and the Aleutian Ridge (Fig. 2). This region is bounded on the northeast by the 200 m bathymetric contour that defines the edge of the Bering shelf, on the southeast by a meandering line that lies 3 miles north of the Aleutian Islands, and on the west by the 171°W longitude meridian. Hereafter, this triangular region is referred to as the Umnak Plateau region. The name is derived from a major bathymetric feature, Umnak Plateau, that covers most of the region.

Seven of 36 dredge hauls that sampled outcrop contain argillaceous rocks with more than l percent and as much as 1.64 percent organic carbon. Some of the rocks in samples of probable early Eocene age have undergone a thermal history that has resulted in generation of hydrocarbons. The organic matter appears to be hydrogen deficient, however, which could indicate that the rocks are more likely to be a source of gas rather than liquid hydrocarbon, unless the hydrogen loss is due to weathering. \r\n\r\nThe Eocene rocks are associated with sandstone and conglomerate on the continental slope. The under-ice surface would serve as a trap for pollutants such as oil and gas released from the sea bed. A knowledge of the morphology of the undersurface of the ice is a first step in understanding the sea-bed interactions and in evaluating the quantities, configuration, and dispersal patterns of sub-ice pollutants. Investigations show thicker sea-ice correlates with a thin snow cover and thin sea-ice underlies elongate snow ridges.
In early May, 1978, the relationships between under-ice morphology, sea bed morphology, tidal currents, and variations in snow thickness were studied. At three sites representing three different environments--protected bay, deep, open lagoon, and narrow tidal channel--trenches were cut through the ice. The trenches were parallel and perpendicular to the sastrugi-sculptured northeast-southwest trending snow ridge pattern. Snow depth, ice thickness, and ice drafts were measured and an upward-directed side-scanning sonar was towed to examine the morphology of the under-ice surface in an area 100 m square.
Snow depth and ice thickness vary about 30-40 cm and exhibit a negative correlation--thin ice coinciding with a thicker insulating snow cover. The areal snow and ice morphology patterns reinforced the correlation. Elongate ridge and trough patterns on the under-ice surface parallel the surface snow ridge patterns on wavelengths typically 10 m wide, yielding sub-ice voids of 25 to 47 x 103m3/km2 (600-1200 barrels per acre). Diving observations indicate a smaller set of depressions 5 cm or less in depth, oriented parallel to the ice crystal fabric, and an escape of sub-ice released air to the snow-ice interface.
The results imply that there is a seasonal stability to the snow ridge pattern and that oil concentrations under the ice would be indicated by surficial snow morphology in the fast ice zone. Spreading directions would be enhanced in the elongate dimensions of the under-ice ridges and troughs, that is, upwind and downwind. In spring, gases will leak to the surface.

Multiple-regression equations relating peak discharge magnitude and frequency to climatic and physical characteristics of 260 gaged basins were determined in order to estimate average recurrence interval of floods at ungaged sites. These equations are for 1.25-, 2-, 5-, 10-, 25-, and 50-year average recurrence intervals. In this report, Alaska was divided into two regions, one having a maritime climate with fall and winter rains and floods, the other having spring and summer floods of a variety or combinations of causes. Average standard errors of the six multiple-regression equations for these two regions were 48 and 74 percent, respectively. Maximum recorded floods at more than 400 sites throughout Alaska are tabulated. Maps showing lines of equal intensity of the principal climatic variables found to be significant (mean annual precipitation and mean minimum January temperature), and location of the 260 sites used in the multiple-regression analyses are included. Little flood data have been collected in western and arctic Alaska, and the predictive equations are therefore less reliable for those areas. Located near the Pribilof Islands, and beneath the virtually featureless Bering Sea shelf, the basin is filled with more than 10 km of sedimentary deposits. These sedimentary rocks are ruptured by normal faults associated with the sides of the graben; these ruptures commonly correlate with offsets in the basement surface. Offset along these faults increases with depth implying that they are growth-type structures. Basement rocks, that floor and flank St. George basin are part of an assemblage of Mesozoic eugeosynclinal rocks that extends from southern Alaska to eastern Siberia beneath the Bering Sea margin and outer shelf. A parallel belt of igneous rocks of late Mesozoic and earliest Tertiary age may also extend from western Alaska to northeastern Siberia beneath the inner Bering Sea shelf.
The Bering Sea margin and adjacent shelf were apparently uplifted by the end of Mesozoic time, resulting in deep subaerial erosion• Following uplift, the outer Bering Sea shelf has undergone extensional rifting and regional subsidence. Differential subsidence has resulted in the formation of a series of basement ridges and basins whose axes parallel the Bering Sea margin. Some of these basins are very large to gigantic in size, e.g., St. George basin, and involve crustal subsidence exceeding 10 km. Such large scale crustal collapse suggests deep crustal or upper mantle processes, such as thermal metamorphism or stress-induced crustal migration.
Nine wells drilled along the northern coast of the Alaska Peninsula, as well as several onshore Soviet wells in northeastern Siberia, relate directly to the submerged basins of the Bering Sea shelf. Although all of the wells on the Alaska Peninsula were abandoned as dry holes, shows of oil and gas were found. In addition, Soviet drilling resulted in the discovery of oil and gas
shows in Oligocene and Miocene sandstone.
Regional geologic and geophysical mapping suggests that there are suitable source beds, reservoir rocks, and traps within St. George basin. However, it is not known if hydrocarbons are present or if the possible reservoirs are of commercial size. A resource appraisal of St. George basin out to 200 meters water depth indicates that, at 5 percent probability, 6.4 billion barrels of oil and 18.6 trillion cubic feet of gas may be in the basin; at 95 percent probability 0.8 billion barrels of oil and 4.5 trillion cubic feet of gas may be in the basin. The statistical mean of the appraisal is 2.7 billion barrels of oil and 10.3 trillion cubic feet of gas.
A large number of faults, evidence for recent movement along some of the faults, and high seismicity all indicate that faulting is a major environmental concern for the outer continental shelf region of the southern Bering Sea, especially in St. George basin. Most of the faults are potentially active and their movement is probably influenced by the local geology, including basement structures and sediment loading. Unstable sediment masses pose potential threats to resource development in the vicinity of the Pribilof Canyon. Volcanic activity along the Aleutian arc south of St. George basin may also pose an environmental hazard to petroleum development in the area. Another environmental hazard is the presence of shallow gas pockets, which could pose such problems during drilling as blowouts and liquefaction of bottom sediment.
The Talkeetna 1° by 3° quadrangle, which consists of about 17,155 km2 in south-central Alaska, was investigated by integrated field and laboratory studies in the disciplines of geology, geochemistry, geophysics, and Landsat data interpretation for the purpose of assessing its mineral resource potential. Past mineral production has been limited to gold from the Yentna district, but the quadrangle contains potentially significant resources of tin and silver and possibly a few other commodities including chromite and copper. The results of the mineral resource assessment are given in a folio of maps which are accompanied by descriptive texts, diagrams, tables, and pertinent references. This Circular provides background information on these investigations and integrates the component maps. These data presented in two tables, are part of the basic data required for glacier dynamic analysis, computer models, and predictions of the number and size of icebergs which Columbia Glacier will calve into shipping lanes of eastern Prince William Sound. A metric, sea-level coordinate system was developed for use in surveying throughout the basin. Its use is explained and monument coordinates listed. A series of seven integrated programs for calculators were used in both the field and office to reduce the surveying data. These programs are thoroughly documented and explained in the report. This document is prepared in accordance with Part 30 of the Code of Federal Regulations (CFR), Section 252.5 and 43 CFR, Section 3300.2, which require that the Directors of the U.S. Geological Survey and the Bureau of Land Management shall make available an Index, listing all relevant, actual or proposed programs, plans, reports, environmental impact statements and other lease sale information, on a regular basis, to each affected state and, upon request, to the executive of any local government whose jurisdiction covers an area affected by OCS activities. Accordingly, the Geological Survey and the Bureau of Land Management are cooperating in a joint effort to compile all relevant information on the OCS Oil and Gas Leasing Program in an Index with four volumes; Alaska, Atlantic, Gulf of Mexico and Pacific.
This volume is a listing of documents used in the Pacific Area OCS decisionmaking process, and the sequence of information presented parallels this process. The bibliographic references are presented by lease sale number, in the sequence in which the documents are generated in the Federal OCS leasing program. Thus, the reader may compare all documents of one type in the Pacific Area or trace a single lease sale throughout the entire leasing process. Activities which generate information throughout the OCS lease sale process are described under Other Documentation and Supplemental Reading. Other Documentation pertains to Federal data gathering and analysis programs which are an integral part of the OCS decisionmaking process and are used throughout the process due to the usefulness of their subject matter. The Supplemental Reading documents (Appendix A) are not used in decisionmaking but are invaluable sources of general OCS information.

Alaska was divided into three major regions - the Gulf of Alaska (Gerin and Molnia, 1978), the Bering Sea and Aleutian Arc, and the Arctic Seas. (Fig. 1) The Bering Sea was divided further into subregions, and the named features are grouped together by subregions. The subregions for the Bering Sea are: 1) the Aleutian Islands from Unimak to Attu, including the features of the store and trench; 2) the Bering Sea coast from Isanotski Strait on the Alaska Peninsula north to the Bering Strait, including Nunivak and Saint Lawrence Islands; and 3) the Bering Sea, offshore features from the Aleutian Islands to the Bering Strait. (Fig. 2)
The purpose of the gazetteer is to serve as a collection of named features of the region, both current and new names. This gazetteer provides a single source of names for coastal and offshore features rather than separate land and sea references. With the increased activity of offshore exploration there is an increased use of current and new names in reports and maps of the Bering Sea.

The quadrangle is dominantly a complex terrane of greenschist- to amphibolitefacies metamorphic rocks that have been intruded by Mesozoic and Tertiary dioritic to granitic rocks and are overlain by Tertiary sedimentary and volcanic rocks. Serpentinized peridotite and associated greenstone, graywacke, and chert crop out in some places. \r\n\r\nThe quadrangle is bisected by the northeastward-trending Shaw Creek fault, which, on the basis of aeromagnetic interpretation and geologic data, is postulated to have left-lateral offset of as much as 48 km. On the northwest side of the Shaw Creek fault, metamorphic rock units have a northwesterly regional trend, and the oldest rocks could be Precambrian in age. Gneiss and schist in the southwestern part of the quadrangle are derived from both igneous and sedimentary protoliths, some of which may be as old as Precambrian. Other rock units, which include calcareous schist and thin-layered marble, black quartzite, semischist, and cataclastic rocks, are considered to be of probable Paleozoic age, although no fossils have yet been found in these rocks. Radiolarians and conodonts in chert associated with greenstone and ultramafic rocks indicate that the chert is of Permian age. \r\n\r\nPotassium-argon ages on igneous rocks of the Big Delta quadrangle fall into two groups: those with biotite, muscovite, hornblende, and sanidine ages between 50 to 69 m.y.; and those with biotite, hornblende, and sanidine ages between 88 to 105 m.y. The younger of these two groups appears to indicate the time of a plutonic event marked by intrusion of mostly small, isolated plutons, including hypabyssal stocks, and the eruption of silicic volcanic rocks. Most of the plutons are quartz monzonite to granite. \r\n\r\nThe older group of ages (88 to 105 m.y.) on igneous rocks includes ages on the largest plutons of the Yukono-Tanana Upland. The rocks range from diorite to quartz monzonite in composition. The potassium-argon ages on the metamorphic rocks of the Big Delta quadrangle, like those obtained elsewhere in the Yukon-Tanana Upland, appear to have been partly or completely reset by subsequent thermal events. \r\n\r\nVein and placer gold deposits have been mined in the Big Delta quadrangle, and although indications of mineralization are widespread, no other mineral deposits have yet been identified. The geologic, geochemical, and geophysical data are compatible with several types of deposits, including porphyry copper, massive sulfide, and skarn deposits.
