The map documents the lasting visual effects these operations have on this arid region and provides a data base for monitoring changes in the extent of visual disturbances in the future.
\n
The first training operation was initiated in April 1942, by General George S. Patton, Jr., to ready armored-vehicle divisions for desert warfare in North Africa (Meller, 1946). The Desert Training Center (DTC) encompassed 17,500 mi2 of arid lands in California, Nevada, and Arizona, and for two years, more than one million soldiers trained under simulated battle conditions. Troops were stationed at 12 main base camps, each housing as many as 15,000 soldiers in canvas tents. From these camps, armored units would radiate into the broad valleys of the Mojave and Sonoran Deserts. Thousands of tanks, trucks, jeeps, and aircraft were used in the war games. When the DTC was inactivated in May 1944, most man-made structures were removed or buried by the U.S. Army.
\n
The second operation, called Operation Desert Strike, was held for two weeks in May 1964 (Moenk, 1964) in the same general area as the DTC. However, no temporary camps were established, and the tanks used were much larger than their World War II counterparts. Over 89,000 troops participated in this exercise.
\n
Land disturbances caused by these training exercises are still evident today throughout the designated training areas (Lathrop, 1983; Prose, 1985; Prose and Metzger, 1985). The World War II base-camp locations are easily identified because the networks of dirt roads are still used by campers, hunters, artifact seekers, and other visitors. Vehicle trails and single tracks remain on many relatively stable surfaces and are most conspicuous on surfaces composed of a veneer of stones (desert pavement).
","language":"English","publisher":"U.S. Geological Survey","publisherLocation":"Reston, VA","doi":"10.3133/mf1855","usgsCitation":"Prose, D., 1986, Map showing areas of visible land disturbances caused by two military training operations in the Mojave Desert, California: U.S. Geological Survey Miscellaneous Field Studies Map 1855, Plate: 29.51 x 43.22 inches, https://doi.org/10.3133/mf1855.","productDescription":"Plate: 29.51 x 43.22 inches","onlineOnly":"N","additionalOnlineFiles":"N","costCenters":[],"links":[{"id":326126,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/thumbnails/mf1855.JPG"},{"id":327434,"type":{"id":17,"text":"Plate"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/mf/1855/plate-1.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}}],"scale":"0","country":"United States","state":"California","otherGeospatial":"Mojave Desert","geographicExtents":"{ \"type\": \"FeatureCollection\", \"features\": [ { \"type\": \"Feature\", \"properties\": {}, \"geometry\": { \"type\": \"Polygon\", \"coordinates\": [ [ [ -116,32.75 ], [ -116,35.5 ], [ -114,35.5 ], [ -114,32.75 ], [ -116,32.75 ] ] ] } } ] }","noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e4a94e4b07f02db659419","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Prose, D.V.","contributorId":92682,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Prose","given":"D.V.","email":"","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":264123,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1}]}}

Host rocks include both mafic and felsic volcanic rocks or their volcaniclastic equivalents, silica-rich chemical sediments, and locally developed carbonate horizons. Some host rocks display variably preserved relict volcanic and (or) sedimentary textures, but the majority are metamorphic rocks having original textures and mineralogies substantially changed. In addition, many host rocks experienced significant premetamorphic chemical alteration that further obscures their origins. For these reasons, the \"Host rock lithology\" column in table 1 first lists a metamorphic rock description and them, in parentheses, suggests a possible volcanic or chemical-sediment protolith.
\n
With the exception of the Pecos mine and a subsurface deposit partially outlined by recent drilling at Jones Hill, New Mexico occurrences shown on this map do not exhibit enough of the classic features of volcanogenic massive-sulfide deposits to make their classification (or origins) unequivocal. Nonetheless, these occurrences are included because they might be genetically, spatially, chronologically, or in some combination of ways related to volcamogenic massive-sulfide-forming systems and are therefore deserving of further study.
\n
The following two sections 1) outline the general geologic setting and character of New Mexico’s Proterozoic volcanic terranes, which host volcamogemic massive-sulfide occurrences, and 2) describe the general features of two occurrences--the Pecos mine and Jones Hill--which display the most complete and convincing collection of \"classic\" volcanogenic massive-sulfide features of any of the New Mexico examples.
","language":"English","publisher":"U.S. Geological Survey","publisherLocation":"Reston, VA","doi":"10.3133/mf1853A","usgsCitation":"Robertson, J.M., Fulp, M., and Daggett, M., 1986, Metallogenic map of volcanogenic massive-sulfide occurrences in New Mexico: U.S. Geological Survey Miscellaneous Field Studies Map 1853, Plate: 46.89 x 30.35 inches, https://doi.org/10.3133/mf1853A.","productDescription":"Plate: 46.89 x 30.35 inches","onlineOnly":"N","additionalOnlineFiles":"N","costCenters":[],"links":[{"id":327462,"rank":1,"type":{"id":17,"text":"Plate"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/mf/1853-A/plate-1.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":326128,"rank":2,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/thumbnails/mf1853A.JPG"}],"scale":"0","country":"United States","state":"New Mexico","geographicExtents":"{ \"type\": \"FeatureCollection\", \"features\": [ { \"type\": \"Feature\", \"properties\": {}, \"geometry\": { \"type\": \"Polygon\", \"coordinates\": [ [ [ -109,31 ], [ -109,37 ], [ -103,37 ], [ -103,31 ], [ -109,31 ] ] ] } } ] }","noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e4a4fe4b07f02db6286fd","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Robertson, J. The U.S. Bureau of Land Management requested mineral surveys of about 11,921 acres of the approximately 15,000 acre wilderness study area. In this report \"wilderness study area\" refers to the 11,921 acres that were studied. The Dos Cabezas Mountains are in many ways a typical mountain range of the Basin-and-Range physiographic province. They are a northwest-trending block-faulted range separated from adjacent ranges by broad valleys. The range is about 22 mi long and 8 mi wide, and it reaches an elevation of 8,354 ft at Dos Cabezas Peaks, located about 2 mi west of the study area. The terrain of the area is rugged. Roadheads and trails provide adequate access for foot traverses.
\n
In the Dos Cabezas Mountains the Apache Pass fault zone is the major structural feature, barely skirting the southwest side of the study area. It extends several miles to the northwest and tens of miles to the southeast, across the Chiricahua Mountains beyond Apache Pass. It is typically made up of a pair of bounding faults and some anastomosing faults between them. The study area is underlain by a variety of sedimentary, igneous, and metamorphic rocks that provide only a fragmentary record of geologic events between Precambrian and Holocene times. A suite of metamorphic and igneous (primarily crystalline) rocks forms the basement terrain. Paleozoic and Mesozoic sedimentary rocks and also Paleozoic and Mesozoic volcanic rocks overlie the basement rocks but are extensively eroded away and may be covered. A pile of volcanic rocks of Late Cretaceous and Paleocene age caps the older rocks in much of the study area. Mid-Tertiary intrusive rocks underlie the eastern part of the study area as well as some very small, widely scattered additional localities. Quaternary gravel deposits occur in the major valleys and along the mountain front.
","language":"English","publisher":"U.S. Geological Survey","publisherLocation":"Reston, VA","doi":"10.3133/mf1873A","isbn":"0607817305","usgsCitation":"Abrams, G.A., 1986, Geophysical maps of the Dos Cabezas Mountains Wilderness Study Area, Cochise County, Arizona: U.S. Geological Survey Miscellaneous Field Studies Map 1873, Plate: 56.51 x 32.09 inches, https://doi.org/10.3133/mf1873A.","productDescription":"Plate: 56.51 x 32.09 inches","onlineOnly":"N","additionalOnlineFiles":"N","costCenters":[],"links":[{"id":326122,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/thumbnails/mf1873A.JPG"},{"id":327134,"type":{"id":17,"text":"Plate"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/mf/1873-A/plate-1.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}}],"scale":"24000","country":"United States","state":"Arizona","county":"Cochise County","otherGeospatial":"Dos Cabezas Mountains Wilderness Study Area","geographicExtents":"{ \"type\": \"FeatureCollection\", \"features\": [ { \"type\": \"Feature\", \"properties\": {}, \"geometry\": { \"type\": \"Polygon\", \"coordinates\": [ [ [ -109.58333333333333,32.16777777777777 ], [ -109.58333333333333,32.28333333333333 ], [ -109.45111111111112,32.28333333333333 ], [ -109.45111111111112,32.16777777777777 ], [ -109.58333333333333,32.16777777777777 ] ] ] } } ] }","noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e4b1ae4b07f02db6a8574","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Abrams, G.
