Streams flowing from lakes which contain zebra mussels,<span>&nbsp;</span><i>Dreissena polymorpha</i>, provide apparently suitable habitats for mussel colonization and downstream range expansion, yet most such streams contain few adult mussels. We postulated that mussel veligers experience high mortality during dispersal via downstream transport. A staining technique using neutral red was developed and tested to distinguish quickly live and dead veligers. Live and dead veligers were distinguishable after an exposure of fresh samples to 13.3 mg L<sup>−−1</sup><span>&nbsp;</span>of neutral red for 3 h.</p><p>3. Neutral red was used to determine the proportion of live veligers in samples taken longitudinally along Christiana Creek. The proportion of live veligers (mean ± SE) declined from 90 ± 3% at the lake outlet to 40 ± 8% 18 km downstream.</p><p>4. Veligers appear to be highly susceptible to damage by physical forces (e.g. shear), and therefore, mortality in turbulent streams could be an important mechanism limiting zebra mussel dispersal to downstream reaches. Based on this comparison, a preferred methodology is presented. Ground-motion-simulation techniques are divided into two general methods: kinematic- and composite-fault models. Green's functions of three types are evaluated: stochastic, empirical, and theoretical. A hybrid scheme is found to give the best fit to the Northridge data. Low frequencies (&lt; 1 Hz) are calculated using a kinematic-fault model and a 3D finite-difference code to propagate energy through a realistic 3D velocity structure. High frequencies (&gt; 1 Hz) are calculated using a composite-fault model with a fractal subevent size distribution and stochastic, bandlimited, white-noise Green's functions. At frequencies below 1 Hz, theoretical elastic-wave-propagation synthetics introduce proper seismic-phase arrivals of body waves and surface waves. The 3D velocity structure more accurately reproduces record durations for the deep sedimentary basin structures found in the Los Angeles region. At frequencies above 1 Hz, scattering effects become important and wave propagation is more accurately represented by stochastic Green's functions. A fractal subevent size distribution for the composite fault model ensures an ω<sup>−2</sup><span>&nbsp;</span>spectral shape over the entire frequency band considered (0.1-20 Hz).</p></div>","language":"English","publisher":"Seismological Society of America","doi":"10.1785/BSSA0890061484","issn":"00371106","usgsCitation":"Hartzell, S., Harmsen, S., Frankel, A., and Larsen, S., 1999, Calculation of broadband time histories of ground motion: Comparison of methods and validation using strong-ground motion from the 1994 Northridge earthquake: Bulletin of the Seismological Society of America, v. 89, no. 6, p. 1484-1504, https://doi.org/10.1785/BSSA0890061484.","productDescription":"21 p.","startPage":"1484","endPage":"1504","numberOfPages":"21","costCenters":[],"links":[{"id":230209,"rank":1,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/thumbnails/outside_thumb.jpg"}],"country":"United States","state":"California","otherGeospatial":"Northridge","geographicExtents":"{\n  \"type\": \"FeatureCollection\",\n  \"features\": [\n    {\n      \"type\": \"Feature\",\n      \"properties\": {},\n      \"geometry\": {\n        \"coordinates\": [\n          [\n            [\n              -119.0,\n              34.5\n            ],\n            [\n              -119.0,\n              33.57705855378293\n            ],\n            [\n              -118.0,\n              33.57705855378293\n            ],\n            [\n              -118.0,\n              34.5\n            ],\n            [\n              -119.0,\n              34.5\n            ]\n          ]\n        ],\n        \"type\": \"Polygon\"\n      }\n    }\n  ]\n}","volume":"89","issue":"6","noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationDate":"1999-12-01","publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"5059f301e4b0c8380cd4b542","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Hartzell, S.","contributorId":12603,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Hartzell","given":"S.","email":"","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":388374,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1},{"text":"Harmsen, S.","contributorId":79600,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Harmsen","given":"S.","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":388377,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":2},{"text":"Frankel, A. 0000-0001-9119-6106","orcid":"https://orcid.org/0000-0001-9119-6106","contributorId":41593,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Frankel","given":"A.","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":388376,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":3},{"text":"Larsen, S.","contributorId":37087,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Larsen","given":"S.","email":"","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":388375,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":4}]}}

Several acoustic televiewer logs have been obtained in this well during successive stages of drilling, and the resulting digital images have revealed numerous oval-shaped fractures seemingly etched into the borehole wall. A theoretical examination of these stress-induced features identifies a unique and ephemeral set of stress distributions and magnitudes that are necessary for their production. Consequently, the ovals provide a basis for quantifying the magnitudes and orientations of the maximum and minimum horizontal principal stresses,&nbsp;</span><i>S</i><i><sub>H</sub></i><span>&nbsp;and&nbsp;</span><i>S</i><i><sub>h</sub></i><span>&nbsp;at this site. Vertical, truncated breakouts and horizontal tensile fractures define the spatial boundaries of the ovals. Explicit criteria for their occurrence are combined with estimates for various physical properties of the rock to yield a range of possible values for the horizontal principal stresses. The conspicuous oval geometry is completed by a curved fracture that joins the vertical and horizontal components. Its degree of curvature is delineated by the modified Griffith failure criterion and is directly related to the principal stress difference (</span><i>S</i><i><sub>H</sub></i><span>&nbsp;−&nbsp;</span><i>S</i><i><sub>h</sub></i><span>). Matching a series of type curves corresponding to specific values for (</span><i>S</i><i><sub>H</sub></i><span>&nbsp;−&nbsp;</span><i>S</i><i><sub>h</sub></i><span>) with the actual undistorted well bore images allows the magnitude of the stress difference to be further constrained. With a value for (</span><i>S</i><i><sub>H</sub></i><span>&nbsp;−&nbsp;</span><i>S</i><i><sub>h</sub></i><span>) of 45 ± 5 MPa the individual magnitudes of&nbsp;</span><i>S</i><i><sub>H</sub></i><span>&nbsp;and&nbsp;</span><i>S</i><i><sub>h</sub></i><span>&nbsp;are determined more precisely. Final estimates for the horizontal principal stresses in DSDP Hole 504B at a depth of 1200 mbsf are 141 MPa ≤&nbsp;</span><i>S</i><i><sub>H</sub></i><span>&nbsp;≤ 149 MPa and 91 MPa ≤&nbsp;</span><i>S</i><i><sub>h</sub></i><span>&nbsp;≤ 109 MPa. Stress magnitudes derived from this approach rely heavily upon the values of a variety of physical properties, and complementary laboratory measurements performed on relevant rock samples provide critical information. Uncertainties in estimating these properties translate into less precise predictions of principal stresses.</span></p>","language":"English","publisher":"American Geophysical Union","doi":"10.1029/1998JB900086","issn":"01480227","usgsCitation":"Morin, R.H., and Flamand, R., 1999, Analysis of stress-induced oval fractures in a borehole at Deep Sea Drilling Project Site 504, eastern equatorial Pacific: Journal of Geophysical Research B: Solid Earth, v. 104, no. Fishes within mangrove habitats in a subtropical estuary were sampled monthly from May 1989 to May 1990, using block nets with rotenone and visual censuses. At 18 stations, temperature ranged from 22 to 34&deg;C, depth from 10 to 104cm and underwater visibility from 1 to 13m. Salinity ranged from 0 to 60 upstream, and 35 to 54 mid- and downstream. A total of 573191 individuals (76 species) was observed or collected, with an average density of 6&middot;5 fish m</span><sup>&minus;2</sup><span>. Engraulidae, Atherinidae, Poeciliidae and Cyprinodontidae numerically dominated the assemblage. Distinct assemblages occurred up-, mid- and downstream and maintained coherent groups in these gradient positions over the seasons. Residents totalled 94&middot;5% of the individuals, estuarine transients comprised 5&middot;1% and occasional marine visitors were less than 0&middot;4%. Densities of resident fishes peaked in winter as temperatures and water levels fell, uncorrelated with changes in salinity. These observations suggest that mangrove habitats may sustain diverse and abundant fish communities dominated by euryhaline residents. Although estuarine transients were consistently rare in upstream sub-basins, downstream were found numerous sub-adults of species occurring as adults on nearby reefs (Lutjanidae, Haemulidae). Thus, reef-associated estuarine transients may be abundant in mangrove habitats having near-marine salinities. Contrary to expectations, mangrove habitats in northeastern Florida bay did not function as a nursery as defined under the nursery-ground paradigm: young-of-the-year juveniles of estuarine transient species did not seek low salinity sub-basins. However, northeastern Florida Bay may not be representative of most mangrove estuaries as the area: (1) is without lunar tides and related circulation; (2) has low and variable amounts of submersed vegetation; and (3) experiences severe hypersaline conditions.</span></p>","language":"English","publisher":"Elsevier","doi":"10.1006/ecss.1998.0459","usgsCitation":"Ley, J., McIvor, C., and Montague, C., 1999, Fishes in mangrove prop-root habitats of northeastern Florida Bay: Distinct assemblages across an estuarine gradient: Estuarine, Coastal and Shelf Science, v. 48, no. 6, p. 701-723, https://doi.org/10.1006/ecss.1998.0459.","productDescription":"23 p.","startPage":"701","endPage":"723","onlineOnly":"N","additionalOnlineFiles":"N","costCenters":[{"id":566,"text":"Southeast Ecological Science Center","active":true,"usgs":true}],"links":[{"id":502610,"rank":0,"type":{"id":41,"text":"Open Access External Repository Page"},"url":"https://figshare.com/articles/journal_contribution/Fishes_in_mangrove_prop_root_habitats_of_northeastern_Florida_Bay_distinct_assemblages_across_an_estuarine_gradient/22863122","text":"External Repository"},{"id":314746,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/thumbnails/outside_thumb.jpg"}],"volume":"48","issue":"6","noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"56a75555e4b0b28f1184d82f","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Ley, J.A.","contributorId":121357,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Ley","given":"J.A.","email":"","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":589553,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1},{"text":"McIvor, Carole carole_mcivor@usgs.gov","contributorId":3665,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"McIvor","given":"Carole","email":"carole_mcivor@usgs.gov","affiliations":[{"id":566,"text":"Southeast Ecological Science Center","active":true,"usgs":true}],"preferred":true,"id":589554,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":2},{"text":"Montague, C.L.","contributorId":22130,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Montague","given":"C.L.","email":"","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":589555,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":3}]}}

Surficial sediments (top 5 cm) from Pool 7 of the Upper Mississippi River were spiked with Cd to concentrations of 3, 7, and 15 μg Cd g</span>-1<span>&nbsp;dry weight. The experimental design was completely randomized, with three Cd-spiked sediment treatments plus an unspiked sediment control (1 μg Cd g</span>-1<span>&nbsp;dry weight), and 10 nymphs in each of six replicates per treatment. Nymphs accumulated Cd during the 21-d exposure; mean concentrations varied from 0.22 to 6.24 μg g</span>-1<span>&nbsp;dry weight, and tissue concentrations were correlated with Cd concentration in unfiltered test water (r = 0.93, P &lt;0.01) and test sediment (r = 0.93, P &lt;0.01). The effect of Cd on bioturbation by nymphs, as indicated by turbidity, differed significantly among treatments (P = 0.045) and over time within treatments (P = 0.01). Turbidity progressively decreased as Cd concentration in the sediment increased, up to 7 μg g</span>-1<span>; however, turbidity in the 15 μg g</span>-1<span>&nbsp;treatment (our greatest exposure concentration) did not differ significantly from the control. Concentrations of Cd in unfiltered, overlying test water increased significantly within treatments during the test, indicating that nymphs mobilized sediment-associated Cd into the overlying water, presumably through burrowing and respiratory activities.</span></p>","language":"English","publisher":"Springer","publisherLocation":"Amsterdam, NJ","doi":"10.1023/A:1005089601201","usgsCitation":"Bartsch, M., Cope, W., and Rada, R.G., 1999, Effects of cadmium-spiked sediment on cadmium accumulation and bioturbation by nymphs of the burrowing mayfly Hexagenia bilineata: Water, Air, & Soil Pollution, v. 109, no. 1-4, p. 277-292, https://doi.org/10.1023/A:1005089601201.","productDescription":"16 p.","startPage":"277","endPage":"292","numberOfPages":"16","costCenters":[{"id":606,"text":"Upper Midwest Environmental Sciences Center","active":true,"usgs":true}],"links":[{"id":263375,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/thumbnails/outside_thumb.jpg"}],"volume":"109","issue":"1-4","noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"50b49d97e4b0b3fb1a22915c","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Bartsch, Michelle 0000-0002-9571-5564 mbartsch@usgs.gov","orcid":"https://orcid.org/0000-0002-9571-5564","contributorId":3165,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Bartsch","given":"Michelle","email":"mbartsch@usgs.gov","affiliations":[{"id":606,"text":"Upper Midwest Environmental Sciences Center","active":true,"usgs":true}],"preferred":true,"id":355050,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1},{"text":"Cope, W. They generally rest in groups and their detection depends on factors that include sea conditions, viewing platform, observer technique and skill, distance, habitat and group size. While visible on the surface, they are difficult to see while diving and may dive in response to an approaching survey platform. We developed and tested an aerial survey method that uses intensive searches within portions of strip transects to adjust for availability and sightability biases. Correction factors are estimated independently for each survey and observer. In tests of our method using shore-based observers, we estimated detection probabilities of 0.52-0.72 in standard strip-transects and 0.96 in intensive searches. We used the survey method in Prince William Sound, Alaska to estimate a sea otter population size of 9,092 (SE = 1422). The new method represents an improvement over various aspects of previous methods, but additional development and testing will be required prior to its broad application.</p>","largerWorkType":{"id":4,"text":"Book"},"largerWorkTitle":"Marine mammal survey and assessment methods","largerWorkSubtype":{"id":12,"text":"Conference publication"},"conferenceTitle":"Symposium on surveys, status & trends of marine mammal populations","conferenceDate":"25-27 February, 1998","conferenceLocation":"Seattle, WA","language":"English","publisher":"A.A. These wetlands possess unique environmental and biotic characteristics that add to the overall regional diversity and production of aquatic invertebrates and the vertebrate wildlife that depend upon them as food. Climatic extremes in the PPR have a profound and dynamic influence on wetland hydrology, hydroperiod, chemistry, and ultimately the biota. Available knowledge of aquatic invertebrates in the PPR suggests that diversity of invertebrates within each wetland class is low. Harsh environmental conditions range from frigid winter temperatures that freeze wetlands and their sediments to hot summer temperatures and drought conditions that create steep salinity gradients and seasonally dry habitats. Consequently, the invertebrate community is composed mostly of ecological generalists that possess the necessary adaptations to tolerate environmental extremes. In this review, we describe the highly dynamic nature of prairie pothole wetlands and suggest that invertebrate studies be evaluated within a conceptual framework that considers important hydrologic, chemical, and climatic events.","largerWorkType":{"id":4,"text":"Book"},"largerWorkTitle":"Invertebrates in freshwater wetlands of North America: Ecology and management","largerWorkSubtype":{"id":15,"text":"Monograph"},"language":"English","publisher":"John Wiley and Sons","usgsCitation":"Euliss, N., Wrubleski, D., and Mushet, D., 1999, Wetlands of the Prairie Pothole Region: Invertebrate species composition, ecology, and management, chap. <i>of</i> Invertebrates in freshwater wetlands of North America: Ecology and management, p. 471-514.","productDescription":"44 p.","startPage":"471","endPage":"514","costCenters":[{"id":480,"text":"Northern Prairie Wildlife Research Center","active":true,"usgs":true}],"links":[{"id":11460,"rank":200,"type":{"id":15,"text":"Index Page"},"url":"https://www.wiley.com/WileyCDA/WileyTitle/productCd-0471292583.html"},{"id":127779,"rank":0,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/thumbnails/outside_thumb.jpg"}],"noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e49dfe4b07f02db5e36eb","contributors":{"editors":[{"text":"Batzer, D.P.","contributorId":114150,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Batzer","given":"D.P.","email":"","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":504510,"contributorType":{"id":2,"text":"Editors"},"rank":1},{"text":"Rader, R.B.","contributorId":112009,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Rader","given":"R.B.","email":"","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":504509,"contributorType":{"id":2,"text":"Editors"},"rank":2},{"text":"Wissinger, S.A.","contributorId":80840,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Wissinger","given":"S.A.","email":"","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":504508,"contributorType":{"id":2,"text":"Editors"},"rank":3}],"authors":[{"text":"Euliss, N.H. In 1953, low dissolved oxygen reduced the biodiversity of that fauna, especially burrowing mayflies and freshwater mussels (Unionidae). Canada and the United States signed the Great Lakes Water Quality Agreement in 1972. By 1982, over 7 billion dollars were spent to improve wastewater treatment plants in the Great Lakes Basin. To assess how the bottom fauna responded to pollution abatement measures, we studied the distribution, abundance, and diversity of bottom fauna in western Lake Erie in 1982 and compared our findings to those of Carr and Hiltunen (1965). Zebra mussels (Dreissena polymorpha) invaded Lake Erie in 1986 and greatly altered these waters. For perspective, we also compared our results to bottom fauna present at the same stations in 1930 (by reference to data in Carr and Hiltunen, 1965) and reviewed the responses of burrowing mayflies and freshwater mussels to the zebra mussel invasion.","largerWorkType":{"id":4,"text":"Book"},"largerWorkTitle":"State of Lake Erie: Past, present, and future","largerWorkSubtype":{"id":4,"text":"Other Government Series"},"language":"English","publisher":"Backhuys Publishers","publisherLocation":"Leiden, The Netherlands","usgsCitation":"Manny, B.A., and Schloesser, D.W., 1999, Changes in the bottom fauna of western Lake Erie, chap. <i>of</i> State of Lake Erie: Past, present, and future, p. 197-217.","productDescription":"p. 197-217","startPage":"197","endPage":"217","costCenters":[{"id":324,"text":"Great Lakes Science Center","active":true,"usgs":true}],"links":[{"id":127093,"rank":0,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/thumbnails/outside_thumb.jpg"}],"noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e49e2e4b07f02db5e4efc","contributors":{"editors":[{"text":"Munawar, M.","contributorId":79835,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Munawar","given":"M.","email":"","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":504151,"contributorType":{"id":2,"text":"Editors"},"rank":1},{"text":"Edsall, T.","contributorId":8792,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Edsall","given":"T.","email":"","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":504149,"contributorType":{"id":2,"text":"Editors"},"rank":2},{"text":"Munawar, I.F.","contributorId":71934,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Munawar","given":"I.F.","email":"","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":504150,"contributorType":{"id":2,"text":"Editors"},"rank":3}],"authors":[{"text":"Manny, Bruce A. 0000-0002-4074-9329 bmanny@usgs.gov","orcid":"https://orcid.org/0000-0002-4074-9329","contributorId":3699,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Manny","given":"Bruce","email":"bmanny@usgs.gov","middleInitial":"A.","affiliations":[{"id":324,"text":"Great Lakes Science Center","active":true,"usgs":true}],"preferred":true,"id":295447,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1},{"text":"Schloesser, D. The timing of lake trout stock collapses were different in each lake, as were the causes of the collapses, and have been the subject of much scientific inquiry and debate. The purpose of this chapter is to summarize and review pertinent information relating historical changes in Great Lakes lake trout stocks, binational efforts to restore those stocks, and progress toward stock restoration. This presentation attempts to generalize patterns across the Great Lakes, rather than to focus within each lake. Lake specific analyses have been used to understand lake specific causes and effects, but there is continuing debate about some of these causes and effects. A basinwide review may suggest mechanisms for observed changes that are not evident by lake specific analysis.","largerWorkType":{"id":4,"text":"Book"},"largerWorkTitle":"Great Lakes fishery policy and management: A binational perspective","largerWorkSubtype":{"id":4,"text":"Other Government Series"},"language":"English","publisher":"Michigan State University Press","publisherLocation":"East Lansing, MI","usgsCitation":"Hansen, M.J., 1999, Lake trout in the Great Lakes: Basin-wide stock collapse and binational restoration, chap. <i>of</i> Great Lakes fishery policy and management: A binational perspective, p. 417-453.","productDescription":"p. 417-453","startPage":"417","endPage":"453","costCenters":[{"id":324,"text":"Great Lakes Science Center","active":true,"usgs":true}],"links":[{"id":126996,"rank":0,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/thumbnails/outside_thumb.jpg"}],"noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e4b32e4b07f02db6b42ea","contributors":{"editors":[{"text":"Taylor, William W.","contributorId":49735,"corporation":false,"usgs":false,"family":"Taylor","given":"William W.","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":504145,"contributorType":{"id":2,"text":"Editors"},"rank":1},{"text":"Ferreri, C.
