The ground water sampled from these wells was used to study the recent effects of human activities on shallow ground water in an urban setting. Well locations were selected in residential and commercial areas constructed between 1960 and 1990 while all industrial and agricultural areas were avoided. Samples were collected and analyzed for major ions, nutrients, pesticides, and volatile organic compounds (VOCs) dunng 1996. This report examines the occurrence of selected herbicides and their degradates in ground water, primarily on the basis of results from two large-scale, multistate investigations by the U.S. Geological Survey&mdash;the National Water-Quality Assessment (NAWQA) Program and the Midwest Pesticide Study (MWPS). The NAWQA pesticide data were derived from 2,227 sites (wells and springs) sampled in 20 major hydrologic basins across the United States from 1993 to 1995; the MWPS data were obtained from the sampling of 303 wells in a 12-state area of the northern midcontinent from 1991 to 1994. Data are presented for seven high-use herbicides: five of current interest to the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency for designing Pesticide Management Plans (atrazine, cyanazine, simazine, alachlor and metolachlor), a largely nonagricultural herbicide (prometon), and an agricultural herbicide first registered in 1994 for use in the United States (acetochlor).</p>\n<p>Six of the herbicides (all except acetochlor) were detected by the U.S. Geological Survey studies in shallow ground water&mdash;that is, ground water recharged within the past 10 years&mdash;in a variety of agricultural and nonagricultural settings, as well as in several aquifers that are sources of drinking-water supply. Acetochlor was not detected by the MWPS in the summer of 1994, but was detected in shallow ground water during the NAWQA Program by early 1995, and during another U.S. Geological Survey study in Iowa during the summers of 1995 and 1996. The acetochlor observations suggest that, in agreement with results from previous field studies, some pesticides may be detected in shallow ground water within 1 year following their application.</p>\n<p>In accord with the results from other largescale multistate studies of pesticides in ground water, more than 98 percent of the detections during the NAWQA and MWPS investigations were at concentrations of less than 1 microgram per liter. Consequently, water quality criteria for drinking water&mdash;that is, standards established to protect human health&mdash;were exceeded at fewer than 0.1 percent of the sites sampled by NAWQA (all of these exceedances involving atrazine alone) and at none of those sampled in 1992 by the MWPS. These criteria, however, may not accurately reflect the overall health risks associated with pesticide detections in water resources because they have been established only for a relatively small number of pesticides and they do not account for the additive or synergistic effects of mixtures, impacts on the health of aquatic ecosystems, or the effects of pesticide degradates. Among the sites sampled during the NAWQA and MWPS investigations, 19.7 and 13.8 percent, respectively, had detections of two or more of the herbicides of interest. Furthermore, for most of the herbicides for which degradates were examined, detection frequencies for major degradates were typically higher than for their&nbsp;respective parent compounds, particularly for the herbicides that are less persistent in aerobic soil.</p>\n<p>Frequencies of detection at or above 0.01 microgram per liter in shallow ground water beneath agricultural areas during the NAWQA study were significantly correlated with agricultural use in those areas for atrazine, cyanazine, alachlor, and metolachlor (P&lt;0.05; Spearman rank correlations), but not for simazine (P&gt;0.05). In urban areas, overall frequencies of detection of these five herbicides in shallow ground water were positively correlated with their total nonagricultural use nationwide (P=0.026; simple linear correlation). Multivariate statistical analysis indicated that frequencies of detection in shallow ground water beneath agricultural areas were positively correlated with half-lives for transformation in aerobic soil and agricultural use of the compounds (P&le;0.0001 for both parameters). Field data indicate that DBCP concentrations in ground water have decreased since the late 1970's. Laboratory experiments by earlier investigators show that DBCP transformed to 2-bromoallyl alcohol (BAA) under conditions similar to in situ conditions, with an estimated half-life ranging from 6.1 (pH 7.8, 21.1 degrees Celsius) to 141 years (pH 7.0, 15 degrees Celsius). For this current study, a detailed hydrogeologic investigation was done to assess the relative importance of chemical transformation, dispersion, and ground-water pumping and reapplication of irrigation water in affecting DBCP concentrations.\nGround-water samples were collected from 20 monitoring wells installed along a 4.6-kilometer transect. DBCP concentrations in these samples ranged from less than the detection limit of 0.03 mg/L to a maximum of 6.4 mg/L. Results of chlorofluorocarbon (CFC) age dating indicate that DBCP occurs in water that ranges in age from about 2 to 41 years. The primary transformation product BAA, which was identified during previous laboratory studies, was not detected at or greater than 0.03 mg/L in any of the 20 ground-water samples. The lack of detection of BAA indicates that transformation to BAA is insignificant relative to other processes controlling DBCP concentrations. Results from this current study indicate that the in situ hydrolysis half-life for DBCP to BAA is much greater than the laboratory-determined values.\nEstimated initial concentrations of DBCP, calculated using CFC-estimated travel times and a half-life of 6.1 years, indicate that maximum initial concentrations are consistent with maximum measured concentrations in ground water. In contrast to initial DBCP concentrations, the estimated initial nitrate concentrations indicate that nitrate concentrations in recharge water have increased with time.\nA conceptual two-dimensional numerical flow and transport modeling approach was used to test hypotheses addressing dispersion, transformation rate, and in a relative sense, the effects of ground- water pumping and reapplication of irrigation water on DBCP concentrations in the aquifer. The flow and transport simulations, which represent hypothetical steady-state flow conditions in the aquifer, were used to refine the conceptual understanding of the aquifer system rather than to predict future concentrations of DBCP. Results indicate that dispersion reduces peak concentrations, but this process alone does not account for the apparent decrease in DBCP concentrations in ground water in the eastern San Joaquin Valley. Ground-water pumping and reapplication of irrigation water may affect DBCP concentrations to the extent that this process can be simulated indirectly using first-order decay. Although the vulnerability of ground water to contamination from the land surface is influenced by many factors, the degree of aquifer confinement, the depth of the well, and the surrounding land use are key factors. Unconfined aquifers generally are much more vulnerable to contamination than confined aquifers. For a well in a confined aquifer, the farther the well is from the unconfined area, the less vulnerable it is to contamination. Generally, the deeper the well, the less vulnerable it is to contamination. Finally, because human activities greatly affect the quality of water that recharges an aquifer, the amount and type of land use in the area that contributes water to the well is a key factor in determining vulnerability. Nitrate contamination of ground water typically occurs in agricultural and residential areas, especially where the aquifer is very permeable and unconfined and nitrogen-fertilizer use is high. In New Jersey and on Long Island, concentrations of nitrate exceed the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency Maximum Contaminant Level (MCL) more often than those of VOCs or pesticides. Nitrate contamination generally is associated with nonpoint sources. VOC contamination of ground water occurs primarily in urban areas, especially in mixed urban and industrial areas where chemicals are used. In general, VOC concentrations are low and do not exceed MCLs. High concentrations of VOCs generally are associated with point sources. Pesticide contamination of ground water occurs in some agricultural and residential areas, where the aquifer is very permeable and unconfined, and where the chemicals are used. Concentrations of pesticides in New Jersey and on Long Island generally are low; in agricultural areas of Long Island, however, some have been found to exceed MCLs. Operating stations at all locations where discharge data are needed is not feasible, but the statistical characteristics of the network station data can be used to estimate discharge characteristics at ungaged sites. Regionalization techniques such as regression analyses relate discharge-frequency characteristics to selected physical and climatic characteristics of drainage basins. A particular discharge-frequency characteristic that can be regionalized is the minimum 7-day, 2-year discharge1 (7Q2). The effects of human activities on the quality of shallow ground water in the recently developed areas were studied by the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) as part of the National Water-Quality Assessment (NAWQA) program. The land-use study consisted of 30 monitoring wells installed and sampled in 1999 in residential/commercial areas where shallow ground water has the potential to move to a deeper public- supply aquifer. The water samples were analyzed for major ions, nutrients, pesticides, volatile organic compounds (VOCs), trace elements, and radon. The occurrence of nitrate, pesticides, and VOCs in water sampled from these wells can serve as an indicator of water affected by human activities at land surface. The statistical analyses indicate the following: 1)Stream-water sulfate (SO4) concentrations decreased at seven of eight precipitation monitoring sites and in each of five streams. 2)Calcium plus magnesium (Ca + Mg) concentrations decreased at seven of eight precipitation monitoring sites and in three of five streams. 3)Precipitation acidity decreased at five of eight precipitation monitoring sites, but alkalinity increased in only one stream.\r\n\r\nThese results indicate that decreases in atmospheric deposition of SO4 have resulted in decreased precipitation acidity. The chemical response of stream water to changes in precipitation chemistry was complex. Decreases in stream-water SO4 concentrations generally matched decreases of precipitation SO4. In stream water, increases in alkalinity were uncommon because decreases in SO4 concentrations often were accompanied by decreases in Ca + Mg concentrations. The decreases in Ca + Mg concentrations might be related to depletion of base cations from soil caused by long-term exposure to acidic deposition. Increases in streamwater alkalinity might not occur until rates of acidic deposition are reduced to substantially less than the rate of cation resupply by weathering and atmospheric deposition. The objectives of the Mississippi River Basin NASQAN Program are to provide an ongoing characterization of the concentrations and mass fluxes of sediment and chemicals at key locations in the basin, to determine regional source areas for these materials, and to assess the effect of human influences on observed concentrations and fluxes. NASQAN complements the ongoing USGS National Water-Quality Assessment (NAWQA) Program, which is performing a detailed assessment in 23 subbasins within the Mississippi River Basin (Hirsch and others, 1988). NASQAN monitors the large rivers in the Mississippi River Basin, downstream of NAWQA study units.
