The ground water sampled from these wells was used to study the recent effects of human activities on shallow ground water in an urban setting. Well locations were selected in residential and commercial areas constructed between 1960 and 1990 while all industrial and agricultural areas were avoided. Samples were collected and analyzed for major ions, nutrients, pesticides, and volatile organic compounds (VOCs) dunng 1996. The protection, development, and wise management of ground-water resources are important to support community growth and to ensure the continued availability of ground water for all users.</p><p>The U.S. Geological Survey, in cooperation with Tooele County, Tooele City, Grantsville City, the U.S. Army, and the State of Utah, has been studying the water resources of Tooele Valley since 1913 to define the quality and amount of water in the principal ground-water aquifers. The most recent studies in the 1990s have provided new insights into the hydrology of the valley. The effects of human activities on the quality of shallow ground water in the recently developed areas were studied by the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) as part of the National Water-Quality Assessment (NAWQA) program. The land-use study consisted of 30 monitoring wells installed and sampled in 1999 in residential/commercial areas where shallow ground water has the potential to move to a deeper public- supply aquifer. The water samples were analyzed for major ions, nutrients, pesticides, volatile organic compounds (VOCs), trace elements, and radon. The occurrence of nitrate, pesticides, and VOCs in water sampled from these wells can serve as an indicator of water affected by human activities at land surface. The tracer test was conducted using an array of six open-hole bedrock wells at the Parson’s Casket Hardware Superfund site. The injection and recovery boreholes were about 20 m (meters) apart, and the imaging boreholes were arranged to provide planar coverage across and along the anticipated tracer path. A hydraulically conductive zone identified during previous investigations was isolated using straddle packers and pumped to establish a hydraulic gradient between the injection and recovery wells. A sodium chloride (NaCl) solution was continuously injected into this zone to move the tracer across the tomographic image plane.</p><p class=\"basictext\">CD cross-hole radar surveys and cross-hole tomography surveys were conducted before and periodically during the tracer injection. Background tomograms contain similar radar velocity and attenuation changes with depth, consistent with a layered dolomite that has variable porosity and electrical conductivity. Slow changes in attenuation associated with low tracer velocity permitted the acquisition of multiple CD surveys and two cross-hole tomography surveys during injection. CD surveys were used to rapidly identify the presence of tracer between wells. Attenuation-difference tomograms contain attenuation increases that delineate the spatial distribution with time of the saline tracer and show the progressive movement of the tracer within the tomographic image plane. The species was collected from twigs of&nbsp;</span><i>Cercocarpus montanus</i><span>&nbsp;and&nbsp;</span><i>Rhamnus purshiana. Stenocybe fragmenta</i><span>&nbsp;is characterized by 5–7 septate, 18–30 μm long ascospores that fragment at maturity. Information on well construction included in this report refers only to wells constructed for new appropriations of ground water. Supplementary data are included in reports of this series only for those years or areas which are important to a discussion of changing ground-water conditions and for which applicable data are available.</p><p>This report includes individual discussions of selected significant areas of ground-water development in the State for calendar year 1997.
