The cause ofmortality was diagnosed as furunculosis, a serious disease in salmonid fishes caused by the bacterium Aeromonas salmonicida. The fish were being maintained as part ofongoing research and were held in uncovered 30-m-Iong concrete raceways, each supplied with about 757 L per minute of 12 ?C pathogen-free spring water. The means by which the fish became infected could not be determined, and there was no recent history offurunculosis in the hatchery system.\r\n","language":"English","publisher":"U.S. Geological Survey, Biological Resources Division","doi":"10.3133/a98013","collaboration":"99-032/FH/AE/LSC","usgsCitation":"Tabb, L., Starliper, C.E., Shotts, E.B., Everson, J., and Palmisano, A., 1998, Windrow composting as an effective method to dispose of large numbers of fish: Biological Information and Technology Notes 98-013, 3 p., https://doi.org/10.3133/a98013.","productDescription":"3 p.","numberOfPages":"3","costCenters":[{"id":365,"text":"Leetown Science Center","active":true,"usgs":true}],"links":[{"id":178926,"rank":0,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/thumbnails/usgs_thumb.jpg"},{"id":11924,"rank":200,"type":{"id":11,"text":"Document"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/bitn/98-013/","linkFileType":{"id":5,"text":"html"}}],"noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e49e0e4b07f02db5e3f1a","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Tabb, L.C.I.","contributorId":82178,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Tabb","given":"L.C.I.","email":"","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":325753,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1},{"text":"Starliper, C. This work illustrates methodologies for rescuing and validating sediment data from heterogeneous historical sources. It greatly expands spatial and temporal data coverage of estuarine and coastal sediments. The database contains about 3500 samples containing inorganic chemical, organic, texture and other environmental data dating from 1955 to 1994. Cooperation with local and federal agencies as well as universities was essential in locating and screening documents for the database. More than 80% of references utilized came from sources with limited distribution (gray literature). Task sharing was facilitated by a comprehensive and clearly defined data dictionary for sediments. It also served as a data entry template and flat file format for data processing and as a basis for interpretation and graphical illustration. Standard QA/QC protocols are usually inapplicable to historical sediment data. In this work outliers and data quality problems were identified by batch screening techniques that also provide visualizations of data relationships and geochemical affinities. No data were excluded, but qualifying comments warn users of problem data. For Boston Harbor, the proportion of irreparable or seriously questioned data was remarkably small (<5%), although concentration values for metals and organic contaminants spanned 3 orders of magnitude for many elements or compounds. Data from the historical database provide alternatives to dated cores for measuring changes in surficial sediment contamination level with time. The data indicate that spatial inhomogeneity in harbor environments can be large with respect to sediment-hosted contaminants. Boston Inner Harbor surficial sediments showed decreases in concentrations of Cu, Hg, and Zn of 40 to 60% over a 17-year period.A comprehensive database of sediment chemistry and environmental parameters has been compiled for Boston Harbor and Massachusetts Bay. Boston Inner Harbor surficial sediments showed decreases in concentrations Cu, Hg, and Zn of 40 to 60% over a 17-year period.","conferenceTitle":"Proceedings of the 4th International Symposium on Environmental Geochemistry","conferenceDate":"October 5-10, 1997","conferenceLocation":"Vail, CO","language":"English","publisher":"Elsevier","publisherLocation":"Amsterdam, Netherlands","doi":"10.1016/S0375-6742(98)00044-2","issn":"03756742","usgsCitation":"Manheim, F., Buchholtz ten Brink, M.R., and Mecray, E., 1998, Recovery and validation of historical sediment quality data from coastal and estuarine areas: An integrated approach: Journal of Geochemical Exploration, v. 64, no. 1-3, p. 377-393, https://doi.org/10.1016/S0375-6742(98)00044-2.","productDescription":"17 p.","startPage":"377","endPage":"393","costCenters":[{"id":678,"text":"Woods Hole Coastal and Marine Science Center","active":true,"usgs":true}],"links":[{"id":479687,"rank":10000,"type":{"id":41,"text":"Open Access External Repository Page"},"url":"http://citeseerx.ist.psu.edu/viewdoc/summary?doi=10.1.1.559.9084","text":"External Repository"},{"id":230357,"rank":0,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/thumbnails/outside_thumb.jpg"},{"id":206602,"rank":9999,"type":{"id":10,"text":"Digital Object Identifier"},"url":"https://dx.doi.org/10.1016/S0375-6742(98)00044-2"}],"country":"United States","state":"Massachusetts","otherGeospatial":"Boston Harbor","geographicExtents":"{\n  \"type\": \"FeatureCollection\",\n  \"features\": [\n    {\n      \"type\": \"Feature\",\n      \"properties\": {},\n      \"geometry\": {\n        \"type\": \"Polygon\",\n        \"coordinates\": [\n          [\n            [\n              -71.06918334960938,\n              42.22648356137063\n            ],\n            [\n              -70.59402465820312,\n              42.22648356137063\n            ],\n            [\n              -70.59402465820312,\n              42.56117285531808\n            ],\n            [\n              -71.06918334960938,\n              42.56117285531808\n            ],\n            [\n              -71.06918334960938,\n              42.22648356137063\n            ]\n          ]\n        ]\n      }\n    }\n  ]\n}","volume":"64","issue":"1-3","noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"50e4a323e4b0e8fec6cdb777","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Manheim, F.T. 0000-0003-4005-4524","orcid":"https://orcid.org/0000-0003-4005-4524","contributorId":55421,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Manheim","given":"F.T.","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":392113,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1},{"text":"Buchholtz ten Brink, Marilyn R.","contributorId":88021,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Buchholtz ten Brink","given":"Marilyn","email":"","middleInitial":"R.","affiliations":[{"id":678,"text":"Woods Hole Coastal and Marine Science Center","active":true,"usgs":true}],"preferred":false,"id":392112,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":2},{"text":"Mecray, E.L.","contributorId":14840,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Mecray","given":"E.L.","email":"","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":392111,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":3}]}}

An earthquake is a sudden movement of the Earth, caused by the abrupt release of strain that has accumulated over a long time. For hundreds of millions of years, the forces of plate tectonics have shaped the Earth as the huge plates that form the Earth's surface slowly move over, under, and past each other. Sometimes the movement is gradual. At other times, the plates are locked together, unable to release the accumulating energy. When the accumulated energy grows strong enough, the plates break free. If the earthquake occurs in a populated area, it may cause many deaths and injuries and extensive property damage. Today we are challenging the assumption that earthquakes must present an uncontrollable and unpredictable hazard to life and property. Scientists have begun to estimate the locations and likelihoods of future damaging earthquakes. Sites of greatest hazard are being identified, and definite progress is being made in designing structures that will withstand the effects of earthquakes.
","language":"English","publisher":"U.S. Government Printing Office","publisherLocation":"Washington, D.C.","doi":"10.3133/7000006","usgsCitation":"Shedlock, K.M., and Pakiser, L.C., 1998, Earthquakes: General Interest Publication, HTML Document; PDF: 20 p. : ill., maps, https://doi.org/10.3133/7000006.","productDescription":"HTML Document; PDF: 20 p. : ill., maps","numberOfPages":"24","onlineOnly":"N","additionalOnlineFiles":"N","costCenters":[],"links":[{"id":18581,"rank":100,"type":{"id":15,"text":"Index Page"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/gip/earthq1/","linkFileType":{"id":5,"text":"html"}},{"id":261209,"rank":800,"type":{"id":11,"text":"Document"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/gip/7000006/report.pdf"},{"id":261210,"rank":0,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/gip/7000006/report-thumb.jpg"}],"noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e4a51e4b07f02db629730","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Shedlock, Kaye M.","contributorId":61788,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Shedlock","given":"Kaye","email":"","middleInitial":"M.","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":343951,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1},{"text":"Pakiser, Louis Charles","contributorId":90691,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Pakiser","given":"Louis","email":"","middleInitial":"Charles","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":343952,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":2}]}}

This report presents the lithostratigraphy, X-ray diffraction analyses, petrography, biostratigraphy, and strontium-isotope stratigraphy of these cores. \r\n\r\nThe oldest unit encountered in the study cores is an unnamed formation that is late Miocene. At least four depositional sequences are present within this formation. Calculated age of the formation, based on strontium-isotope stratigraphy, ranges from 9.5 to 5.7 Ma (million years ago). An unconformity within this formation that represents a hiatus of at least 2 million years is indicated in the Old Pump Road core. In two cores, Collier-Seminole and Old Pump Road, the uppermost sediments of the unnamed formation are not dated by strontium isotopes, and, based on the fossils present, these sediments could be as young as Pliocene. In another core (Fakahatchee Strand-Ranger Station), the upper part of the unnamed formation is dated by mollusks as Pliocene. The Tamiami Formation overlies the unnamed formation throughout the study area and is represented by the Ochopee Limestone Member. The unit is Pliocene and probably includes the interval of time near the early/late Pliocene boundary. Strontium-isotope analysis indicates an early Pliocene age (calculated ages range from 5.1 to 3.5 Ma), but the margin of error includes the latest Miocene and the late Pliocene. The dinocyst assemblages in the Ochopee typically are not age-diagnostic, but, near the base of the unit in the Collier-Seminole, Jones Grade, and Fakahatchee Strand State Forest cores, they indicate an age of late Miocene or Pliocene. The molluscan assemblages indicate a Pliocene age for the Ochopee, and a distinctive assemblage of Carditimera arata and Chione cortinaria in several of the cores specifically indicates an age near the early/late Pliocene boundary. \r\n\r\nUndifferentiated sands overlie the Pliocene limestones in two cores in the southern part of the study area. Artificial fill occurs at the top of most of the cores. \r\n\r\nThe hydrologic confining units penetrated by these cores are different in different parts of the study area. To the west, a hard tightly cemented dolostone forms the first major confining unit below the water table. In the eastern part of the study area, confinement is more difficult to determine. A tightly cemented sandstone, much younger than the dolostones to the west and probably not laterally connected to them, forms a slight confining unit in one core. Thick zones of poorly sorted muddy unconsolidated sands form a slight confining unit in other cores; these probably are not correlative to either the sandstone or the dolostones to the west. The age and sedimentologic observations suggest a complex compartmentalization of the surficial aquifer system in southwestern Florida. The calibrations of dinocyst and molluscan occurrences with strontium-isotope stratigraphy allows us to expand and document the reported ranges of many taxa. \r\n\r\n\r\nThis report is preliminary and has not been reviewed for conformity with U.S. Geological Survey editorial standards or with the North American Stratigraphic Code. Many undergraduates are unfamiliar with the process of preparing for graduate school, especially the search for a graduate program. Once in graduate school, they may be unfamiliar with requirements (both written and unwritten) and expectations, and they may also lack the necessary knowledge or skills to complete a graduate program successfully. For students in wildlife science graduate programs, these problems can become major issues, especially for students with undergraduate degrees in fields other than wildlife science (e.g., biology programs). Although several authors have provided advice to graduate students (Stearns 1987, Hucy 1987, Witz 1994), their suggestions either did not provide sufficient information for undergraduate students, or
did not apply to graduate students in wildlife science. We provide information for undergraduates and new graduate students in wildlife science that is often unavailable prior to and during the initial phases of a graduate program. Our objectives are: (1) to provide advice on how to prepare for graduate school; (2) to provide an approach to locating,
evaluating, and selecting potential graduate schools and a graduate advisor; (3) to describe the fundamentals of graduate school; and (4) to familiarize students with available tools and techniques to enhance a graduate program. We hope that university professors will provide this paper to undergraduates to aid those interested in attending graduate
school. In addition, graduate advisors may wish to provide this paper to new graduate students as they begin their programs.
","language":"English","publisher":"Wiley","usgsCitation":"Fischer, R.A., and King, S.L., 1998, Suggestions for new and aspiring graduate students in wildlife science: Wildlife Society Bulletin, v. 26, no. 1, p. 41-50.","productDescription":"10 p.","startPage":"41","endPage":"50","costCenters":[{"id":198,"text":"Coop Res Unit Atlanta","active":true,"usgs":true},{"id":455,"text":"National Wetlands Research Center","active":true,"usgs":true},{"id":17705,"text":"Wetland and Aquatic Research Center","active":true,"usgs":true}],"links":[{"id":365636,"rank":1,"type":{"id":15,"text":"Index Page"},"url":"https://www.jstor.org/stable/3783800"},{"id":365637,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/thumbnails/outside_thumb.jpg"}],"volume":"26","issue":"1","noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Fischer, Richard A.","contributorId":113489,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Fischer","given":"Richard","email":"","middleInitial":"A.","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":766305,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1},{"text":"King, Sammy L. 0000-0002-5364-6361 sking@usgs.gov","orcid":"https://orcid.org/0000-0002-5364-6361","contributorId":557,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"King","given":"Sammy","email":"sking@usgs.gov","middleInitial":"L.","affiliations":[{"id":198,"text":"Coop Res Unit Atlanta","active":true,"usgs":true}],"preferred":true,"id":766306,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":2}]}}

A number of factors contribute to this loss of habitat, including the activities of herbivores. The objective of this study was to examine the effects of large mammals, predominantly nutria and wild boar, on processes controlling soil elevation in coastal marshes.

2 Effects of herbivores on soil and vegetation were assessed by the use of paired fenced and unfenced plots over two successive growing seasons. Above‐ground biomass, litter production, changes in soil elevation, vertical soil accretion, shallow subsidence, below‐ground production of roots and rhizomes, the thickness of the root zone, soil bulk density, and soil organic matter were measured.

3 Above‐ground biomass, below‐ground production, soil elevation and the expansion of the root zone decreased due to herbivore activity. Litter production, the rate of soil surface accretion and shallow soil subsidence were all higher in grazed compared to ungrazed plots, while soil organic matter and bulk density did not differ significantly between treatments.

4 The results indicate that herbivores can have a negative effect on soil building processes, primarily by reducing below‐ground production and expansion of the root zone. Sedimentary textures and fossils indicate that both units accumulated in shallow, nearshore marine, lagoonal, and deltaic depositional environments. Calcareous nannofossils and dinoflagellates indicate that the vertebrate-bearing portions of the Williamsburg Formation near St. Stephen belong within calcareous nannoplankton Zones NP 3-5 (Lower Bridge Member) and within calcareous nannoplankton zones NP 8-9 (Chicora Member). Heterogeneity may be produced by interfaces between different rock types, foliation, and fracturing. In crystalline rock, hydraulic flow is primarily through fracture networks rather than through the rock matrix. Borehole radar methods have been applied to help map flow paths in crystalline rock. Correlation of features identified in borehole radar reflection records and tomograms with hydraulic flow paths is generally uncertain because the records show responses to heterogeneity of all- kinds, not just to hydraulically permeable fractures. Even in lithologically uniform rock, it is often not possible to distinguish fractures of high hydraulic permeabilities from those with low permeabilities.

It is possible to “erase” signatures from lithologic interfaces and rock fabric to identify the signatures of hydraulically permeable fractures by using a saline tracer in fractured crystalline rock because the electrical properties of the rock, except for the fractures that are open to infiltration by the brine solution, remain the same after the injection of the brine and may be removed by examining differences. Saline tracer experiments were carried out in 1995, 1996, and 1997 in the FSE well field at the Mirror Lake fractured-rock hydrology research site in Grafton County, New Hampshire. Comparisons of results from directional radar reflection surveys to well-to-well difference attenuation tomography in the same pairs of wells show generally good correspondence between the location of radar reflections and attenuation anomalies. Our results demonstrate the advantage of using a saline tracer for before-and-after difference mapping of hydraulically permeable fractures in lithologically heterogeneous rock and the utility of the coordinated use of directional borehole radar and hole-to-hole radar tomography.
","largerWorkType":{"id":4,"text":"Book"},"largerWorkTitle":"Proceedings of the symposium on the application of geophysics to engineering and environmental problems","largerWorkSubtype":{"id":12,"text":"Conference publication"},"conferenceTitle":"Symposium on the Application of Geophysics to Engineering and Environmental Problems","conferenceDate":"March 22-26, 1998","conferenceLocation":"Chicago, IL","language":"English","publisher":"Environmental and Engineering Geophysical Society","usgsCitation":"Wright, D.L., and Lane, J., 1998, Mapping hydraulically permeable fractures using directional borehole radar and hole-to-hole tomography with a saline tracer, in Proceedings of the symposium on the application of geophysics to engineering and environmental problems, Chicago, IL, March 22-26, 1998, p. 379-388.","productDescription":"10 p.","startPage":"379","endPage":"388","costCenters":[{"id":493,"text":"Office of Ground Water","active":true,"usgs":true}],"links":[{"id":368811,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/thumbnails/outside_thumb.jpg"},{"id":368810,"rank":1,"type":{"id":15,"text":"Index Page"},"url":"https://water.usgs.gov/ogw/bgas/publications/SAGEEP98_040/"}],"country":"United States","state":"New Hampshire","county":"Grafton County","otherGeospatial":"Mirror Lake","geographicExtents":"{\n  \"type\": \"FeatureCollection\",\n  \"features\": [\n    {\n      \"type\": \"Feature\",\n      \"properties\": {},\n      \"geometry\": {\n        \"type\": \"Polygon\",\n        \"coordinates\": [\n          [\n            [\n              -71.7026138305664,\n              43.9407373431014\n            ],\n            [\n              -71.68905258178711,\n              43.9407373431014\n            ],\n            [\n              -71.68905258178711,\n              43.94629935894505\n            ],\n            [\n              -71.7026138305664,\n              43.94629935894505\n            ],\n            [\n              -71.7026138305664,\n              43.9407373431014\n            ]\n          ]\n        ]\n      }\n    }\n  ]\n}","noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Wright, David L. dwright@usgs.gov","contributorId":1132,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Wright","given":"David","email":"dwright@usgs.gov","middleInitial":"L.","affiliations":[],"preferred":true,"id":774332,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1},{"text":"Lane, John W. The study was conducted to evaluate the benefits of applying multi-offset seismic processing techniques to borehole-radar reflection surveys in fractured rock.

The multi-offset reflection surveys were conducted in conjunction with a saline tracer- injection experiment. During injection, a sodium chloride (NaCl) solution was continuously pumped into a hydraulically conductive zone that was isolated by specially constructed, reusable, PVC straddle packers suspended from PVC casing. Eight common-offset borehole reflection profiles were collected within the PVC-sleeved portion of the borehole before and during the tracer injection. The offset between the transmitter and receiver antennas ranged from 6.4 to 9.9 m (meters). The common offset data were filtered, sorted into common distance-point (CDP) gathers, normal move-out (NMO) corrected, and stacked to produce a zero-offset borehole CDP profile.

Comparison of the common-offset and CDP profiles indicates that multi-offset data acquisition and CDP processing; (1) increases the resolution of reflectors near the borehole, (2) decreases the effects of direct wave coupling, antenna ringing, and system noise, and (3) improves the clarity of difference images used to identify the effects of saline tracer on reflections from transmissive fractures.
","largerWorkType":{"id":4,"text":"Book"},"largerWorkTitle":"Proceedings of the symposium on the application of geophysics to engineering and environmental problems","largerWorkSubtype":{"id":12,"text":"Conference publication"},"conferenceTitle":"Symposium on the Application of Geophysics to Engineering and Environmental Problems","conferenceDate":"March 22-26, 1998","conferenceLocation":"Chicago, IL","language":"English","publisher":"Environmental and Engineering Geophysical Society","usgsCitation":"Lane, J., Haeni, F., and Roelof J. For example, this information is useful for selecting new sites for drinking water sources and designing more cost-effective monitoring strategies for existing sources. Groundwater vulnerability has typically been assessed using largely qualitative methods and expressed as relative measures of risk. In this study, a statistical approach was used to quantify the likelihood that a well contains an elevated concentration of nitrate or a detectable concentration of atrazine.

The occurrence of elevated nitrate concentrations or detectable concentrations of atrazine in groundwater was related to both natural and anthropogenic variables using logistic regression. The variables that best explain the occurrence of elevated nitrate concentrations were well depth, surficial geology, and the percentages of urban and agricultural land within a radius of 3.2 kilometers of a well. Well depth and roadside application of atrazine best explained the occurrence of detectable concentrations of atrazine. From these relations, multiple logistic regression models were developed which predict the probability that a well has an elevated nitrate concentration or a detectable concentration of atrazine.
","largerWorkType":{"id":4,"text":"Book"},"largerWorkTitle":"Conference proceedings: Source water assessment and protection 98","largerWorkSubtype":{"id":12,"text":"Conference publication"},"conferenceTitle":"Source Water Assessment and Protection 98","conferenceDate":"Apr 28-30, 1998","conferenceLocation":"Dallas, TX","language":"English","publisher":"National Water Research Institute","usgsCitation":"Tesoriero, A.J., Inkpen, E.L., and Voss, F.D., 1998, Assessing groundwater vulnerability using logistic regression, in Conference proceedings: Source water assessment and protection 98, Dallas, TX, Apr 28-30, 1998, p. 157-165.","productDescription":"9 p.","startPage":"157","endPage":"165","costCenters":[{"id":629,"text":"Water Resources Division","active":false,"usgs":true}],"links":[{"id":393107,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/thumbnails/outside_thumb.jpg"},{"id":393106,"rank":1,"type":{"id":15,"text":"Index Page"},"url":"https://water.usgs.gov/nawqa/pubs/swa_conf1998.html"}],"noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Tesoriero, Anthony J. 0000-0003-4674-7364 tesorier@usgs.gov","orcid":"https://orcid.org/0000-0003-4674-7364","contributorId":2693,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Tesoriero","given":"Anthony","email":"tesorier@usgs.gov","middleInitial":"J.","affiliations":[{"id":518,"text":"Oregon Water Science Center","active":true,"usgs":true}],"preferred":true,"id":828717,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1},{"text":"Inkpen, E.
