Today, the West Antarctic Ice Sheet contains an amount of ice equivalent to approximately six metres of sea-level rise, but most of the ice is in the slowly moving interior reservoir. A relatively small fraction of the ice sheet comprises several rapidly flowing ice streams which drain the ice to the sea. The evolution of this drainage system almost certainly governs the process of ice-sheet collapse</span><sup></sup><span>. The thick and slow-moving interior ice reservoir is generally fixed to the underlying bedrock while the ice streams glide over lubricated beds at velocities of up to several hundred metres per year. The source of the basal lubricant — a water-saturated till</span><sup></sup><span>&nbsp;overlain by a water system</span><sup></sup><span>&nbsp;— may be linked to the underlying geology. The West Antarctic Ice Sheet rests over a geologically complex region characterized by thin crust, high heat flows, active volcanism and sedimentary basins</span><sup></sup><span>. Here we use aerogeophysical measurements to constrain the geological setting of the onset of an active West Antarctic ice stream. The onset coincides with a sediment-filled basin incised by a steep-sided valley. This observation supports the suggestion</span><sup></sup><span>&nbsp;that ice-stream dynamics — and therefore the response of the West Antarctice Ice Sheet to changes in climate — are strongly modulated by the underlying geology.</span></p>","language":"English","publisher":"Nature Publications","doi":"10.1038/27883","usgsCitation":"Bell, R.E., Blankenship, D.D., Finn, C.A., Morse, D.L., Scambos, T.A., Brozena, J., and Hodge, S.M., 1998, Influence of subglacial geology on the onset of a West Antarctic ice stream from aerogeophysical observations: Nature, v. 394, p. 58-62, https://doi.org/10.1038/27883.","productDescription":"5 p.","startPage":"58","endPage":"62","costCenters":[{"id":35995,"text":"Geology, Geophysics, and Geochemistry Science Center","active":true,"usgs":true}],"links":[{"id":387003,"rank":1,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/thumbnails/outside_thumb.jpg"}],"otherGeospatial":"West Antarctic Ice Sheet","geographicExtents":"{\n  \"type\": \"FeatureCollection\",\n  \"features\": [\n    {\n      \"type\": \"Feature\",\n      \"properties\": {},\n      \"geometry\": {\n        \"type\": \"Polygon\",\n        \"coordinates\": [\n          [\n            [\n              -175.078125,\n              -85.62206859340185\n            ],\n            [\n              -89.296875,\n              -85.62206859340185\n            ],\n            [\n              -89.296875,\n              -69.65708627301174\n            ],\n            [\n              -175.078125,\n              -69.65708627301174\n            ],\n            [\n              -175.078125,\n              -85.62206859340185\n            ]\n          ]\n        ]\n      }\n    }\n  ]\n}","volume":"394","noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationDate":"1998-07-01","publicationStatus":"PW","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Bell, R. To provide additional insight into the influence of collection procedures on pore water chemistry, anion (filtered only) and cation concentrations were measured in filtered and unfiltered pore water isolated from four sediments using three different procedures: dialysis, centrifugation, and vacuum. Peepers were constructed using 24-cell culture plates and cellulose membranes and vacuum extractors consisted of fused-glass air stones attached with airline tubing to 60-cc syringes. Centrifugation was accomplished at two speeds (2,500 and 10,000&nbsp;</span><i>g</i><span>) for 30 min in a refrigerated centrifuge maintained at 4°C. Only minor differences in chemical characteristics and cation and anion concentrations were found among the different collecting methods with differences being sediment-specific. Filtering of the pore water did not appreciably reduce major cation concentrations, but trace metals (Cu and Pb) were markedly reduced. As part of this evaluation: (1) ground-water-level fluctuations and trends in three aquifer systems in sediment of Cretaceous and Tertiary age were described and related to patterns of ground-water use and precipitations; (2) a conceptual model ofthe stream-aquifer flow system was developed; (3) the predevelopment ground-water flow system, configuration of potentiometric surfaces, trans-river flow, and recharge-discharge relations were described; and (4) stream-aquifer relations and the influence of river incision on ground-water flow and stream-aquifer relations were described. The 5,147-square mile study area is located in the northern part of the Coastal Plain physiographic province of Georgia and South Carolina. Coastal Plain sediments comprise three aquifer systems consisting of seven aquifers that are separated hydraulically by confining units. The aquifer systems are, in descending order: (1) the Floridan aquifer system?consisting of the Upper Three Runs and Gordon aquifers in sediments of Eocene age; (2) the Dublin aquifer system?consisting of the Millers Pond, upper Dublin, and lower Dublin aquifers in sediments of Paleocene-Late Cretaceous age; and (3) the Midville aquifer system?consisting of the upper Midville and lower Midville aquifers in sediments of Late Cretaceous age. The Upper Three Runs aquifer is the shallowest aquifer and is unconfined to semi-confined throughout most of the study area. Ground-water levels in the Upper Three Runs aquifer respond to a local flow system and are affected mostly by topography and climate. Ground-water flow in the deeper, Gordon aquifer and Dublin and Midville aquifer systems is characterized by local flow near outcrop areas to the north, changing to intermediate flow and then regional flow downdip (southeastward) as the aquifers become more deeply buried. Water levels in these deeper aquifers show a pronounced response to topography and climate in the vicinity of outcrops, and diminish southeastward where the aquifer is more deeply buried. Stream stage and pumpage affect ground-water levels in these deeper aquifers to varying degrees throughout the study area. The geologic characteristics of the Savannah River alluvial valley substantially control the configuration of potentiometric surfaces, ground-water-flow directions, and stream-aquifer relations. Data from 18 shallow borings indicate incision into each aquifer by the paleo Savannah River channel and subsequent infill of permeable alluvium, allowing for direct hydraulic connection between aquifers and the Savannah River along parts of its reach. This hydraulic connection may be the cause of large ground-water discharge to the river near Jackson, S.C., where the Gordon aquifer is in contact with Savannah River alluvium, and also the cause of lows or depressions formed in the potentiometric surfaces of confined aquifers that are in contact with the alluvium. Ground water in these aquifers flows toward the depressions. The influence of the river is diminished downstream where the aquifers are deeply buried, and upstream and downstream ground-water flow is possibly separated by a water divide or 'saddle'. Water-level data indicate that saddle features probably exist in the Gordon aquifer and Dublin aquifer system, and also might be present in the Midville aquifer system. Results suggest that spatial and temporal variability in growing season precipitation, potential evapotranspiration, and growing degree days are the most important controls on grassland performance and productivity. When TI NDVI and climate data of all grassland land cover classes were examined as a whole, a statistical model showed significant positive correlation between the TI NDVI and accumulated spring and summer precipitation, and a negative correlation between TI NDVI and spring potential evapotranspiration. The coefficient of determination (R</span><sup>2</sup><span>) of the general model was 0.45. When the TI NDVI-climate relationship was examined by individual land cover type, the relationship was generally better defined in terms of the variance accounted for by class-specific models </span><span id=\"mmlsi1\" class=\"mathmlsrc\"><img class=\"imgLazyJSB inlineImage\" title=\"Full-size image (<1 K)\" src=\"http://ars.els-cdn.com/content/image/1-s2.0-S0034425798000121-si1.gif\" alt=\"Full-size image (<1 K)\" width=\"120\" height=\"21\" data-inlimgeid=\"1-s2.0-S0034425798000121-si1.gif\" data-loaded=\"true\" data-mce-src=\"http://ars.els-cdn.com/content/image/1-s2.0-S0034425798000121-si1.gif\"></span><span>. The photosynthetic pathway is an important determinant of grassland performance with northern mixed prairie (mixture of C</span><sub>3</sub><span> and C</span><sub>4</sub><span> grassland) TI NDVI affected by both thermal and moisture conditions during the growing season while southern plains grasslands (primarily C</span><sub>4</sub><span>grassland) were predominantly influenced by spring and summer precipitation. Grassland land cover classes associated with sandy soils also demonstrated a strong relationship between TI NDVI and growing season rainfall. Significant impact of interannual climate variability on the TI NDVI–climate relationship was also observed. The most porous and permeable appear to be hydrogeologic subdivision VI, the Kirschberg evaporite member of the Kainer Formation; and hydrogeologic subdivision III, the leached and collapsed members, undivided, of the Person Formation. The porosity of the rocks in the Edwards aquifer outcrop is related to depositional or diagenetic elements along specific stratigraphic horizons (fabric selective) and to dissolution and structural elements that can occur in any lithostratigraphic horizon (not fabric selective). Permeability depends on the physical properties of the rock such as size, shape, and distribution of pores.</p>\n<p>The Edwards aquifer has relatively large porosity and permeability resulting, in part, from the development or redistribution of secondary porosity. Lithology, stratigraphy, diagenesis, and karstification account for the effective porosity and permeability in the Edwards aquifer outcrop. Karst features that can greatly enhance effective porosity and permeability in the Edwards aquifer outcrop include sinkholes, dolines, and caves.</p>\n<p>Field observations in the Medina Lake area confirm the findings of previous investigators that Medina Lake mostly overlies rocks of the upper member of the Glen Rose Limestone. The channel downstream of Medina Dam to the upper end of Diversion Lake also overlies the upper member of the Glen Rose Limestone. Most of Diversion Lake overlies a thin section of the Edwards aquifer&mdash; hydrogeologic subdivision VIII (basal nodular member) and the basal part of hydrogeologic subdivision VII (dolomitic member). Hydrogeologic subdivisions VIII and VII might be hydraulically connected to Medina Lake at high lake stages.</p>\n<p>The Trinity aquifer, which crops out in the northern part of the Medina Lake area and underlies the Edwards aquifer in the southern part, is much less permeable and productive than the Edwards aquifer. The original objectives of the program were to provide baseline ground-waterquality data throughout the State for the major aquifers and to address any new areas of water-quality concern. Since the program began, the emphasis and objectives of the program have changed several times. For water years 1992 through 1996, more emphasis has been placed on determining trends in ground-water quality and correlating water quality with possible contributing factors such as location, land use, aquifer, aquifer depth, and precipitation.</p>\n<p>From 1982 through 1996, a total of 2,529 water samples has been collected from 1,158 municipal wells throughout Iowa. The samples consisted of 1,048 alluvial aquifer samples (387 wells), 530 Pleistocene aquifer samples (224 wells), 139 Cretaceous aquifer samples (86 wells), 187 Carboniferous aquifer samples (104 wells), 447 Silurian-Devonian aquifer samples (222 wells), 177 Cambrian-Ordovician aquifer samples (134 wells), and 1 Precambrian aquifer sample (1 well).</p>\n<p>Some samples had concentrations greater than or equal to drinking-water regulations established by the U.S Environmental Protection Agency. Of 1,901 samples analyzed for dissolved sulfate, 137 samples had concentrations greater than or equal to the Maximum Contaminant Level for sulfate. Of 2,510 samples analyzed for dissolved nitrite plus nitrate as nitrogen, 198 samples had concentrations greater than or equal to the Maximum Contaminant Level for nitrite plus nitrate. Of 1,945 samples analyzed for dissolved iron, 1,022 samples had concentrations greater than or equal to the Secondary Maximum Contaminant Level for iron. Of 1,946 samples analyzed for dissolved manganese, 1,082 samples had concentrations greater than or equal to the Secondary Maximum Contaminant Level for manganese. Of 1,659 samples analyzed for alachlor, atrazine, and cyanazine, 401 samples had concentrations greater than or equal to the respective minimum reporting levels. One sample had concentrations of alachlor, atrazine, and cyanazine greater than the respective drinking-water regulations.</p>\n<p>Maps show the general location of wells that have been sampled in the various aquifers. Other maps show the location of wells where sulfate and nitrite plus nitrate concentrations exceed the respective Maximum Contaminant Levels and wells where concentrations of the pesticides alachlor, atrazine, or cyanazine exceeded the respective minimum reporting levels. The compact disc included with this report has information about water-quality properties and concentrations of dissolved solids, major ions, nutrients, trace elements, radionuclides, total organic carbon, pesticides, and synthetic organic compounds for water years 1982 through 1996.</p>","language":"English","publisher":"U.S. Geological Survey","publisherLocation":"Iowa City, Scientists were not surprised by the occurrence of a destructive earthquake in this region and had, in fact, been attempting to forecast the location of the next large earthquake in the San Francisco Bay region for decades. This paper summarizes more than 20 scientifically based forecasts made before the 1989 Loma Prieta earthquake for a large earthquake that might occur in the Loma Prieta area. The forecasts geographically closest to the actual earthquake primarily consisted of right-lateral strike-slip motion on the San Andreas Fault northwest of San Juan Bautista. Several of the forecasts did encompass the magnitude of the actual earthquake, and at least one approximately encompassed the along-strike rupture length. The 1989 Loma Prieta earthquake differed from most of the forecasted events in two ways: (1) it occurred with considerable dip-slip in addition to strike-slip motion, and (2) it was much deeper than expected.","largerWorkType":{"id":18,"text":"Report"},"largerWorkTitle":"The Loma Prieta, California, earthquake of October 17, 1989: Earthquake occurrence (Professional Paper 1550)","largerWorkSubtype":{"id":5,"text":"USGS Numbered Series"},"language":"English","publisher":"U.S. Geological Survey","doi":"10.3133/pp1550B","collaboration":"Prepared in cooperation with the National Science Foundation","usgsCitation":"Harris, R.A., 1998, The Loma Prieta, California, Earthquake of October 17, 1989: Forecasts: U.S. Geological Survey Professional Paper 1550, iii, 28 p., https://doi.org/10.3133/pp1550B.","productDescription":"iii, 28 p.","costCenters":[{"id":234,"text":"Earthquake Hazards Program","active":true,"usgs":true},{"id":237,"text":"Earthquake Science Center","active":true,"usgs":true}],"links":[{"id":430578,"rank":3,"type":{"id":36,"text":"NGMDB Index Page"},"url":"https://ngmdb.usgs.gov/Prodesc/proddesc_76940.htm","linkFileType":{"id":5,"text":"html"}},{"id":126669,"rank":1,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/thumbnails/pp_1550_b.jpg"},{"id":3491,"rank":2,"type":{"id":15,"text":"Index Page"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/pp/pp1550/pp1550b/","linkFileType":{"id":5,"text":"html"}}],"country":"United States","state":"California","otherGeospatial":"San Francisco Bay region","geographicExtents":"{\n  \"type\": \"FeatureCollection\",\n  \"features\": [\n    {\n      \"type\": \"Feature\",\n      \"properties\": {},\n      \"geometry\": {\n        \"coordinates\": [\n          [\n            [\n              -123.99006315024482,\n              39.273574361599486\n            ],\n            [\n              -123.99006315024482,\n              35.72489852893848\n            ],\n            [\n              -120.54394774455744,\n              35.72489852893848\n            ],\n            [\n              -120.54394774455744,\n              39.273574361599486\n            ],\n            [\n              -123.99006315024482,\n              39.273574361599486\n            ]\n          ]\n        ],\n        \"type\": \"Polygon\"\n      }\n    }\n  ]\n}","noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e49e0e4b07f02db5e4108","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Harris, Ruth A. 0000-0002-9247-0768 harris@usgs.gov","orcid":"https://orcid.org/0000-0002-9247-0768","contributorId":786,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Harris","given":"Ruth","email":"harris@usgs.gov","middleInitial":"A.","affiliations":[{"id":237,"text":"Earthquake Science Center","active":true,"usgs":true}],"preferred":true,"id":219423,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1}]}}

The 74.3 km of newly interpreted profiles and previously described profiles form a network of lines across and around the southern end of the arch. The southwestern terminus of the arch is defined by the absence of significantly upwarped or extensively disrupted reflectors, which are diagnostic traits of the arch where it is well developed. The arch is 134 km long as documented here, which is only slightly longer than the length reported by previous studies. Differing opinions about the magnitude of the 1811-1812 New Madrid earthquakes could be partly explained by substantially longer seismic source zones, but this minor increase in source zone length does not reconcile the large differences in magnitude estimates of the events. If future earthquake ruptures associated with the arch are confined to areas of extensive deformation, then this well documented southwestern termination precludes a rupture substantially longer than ~134 km along the zone of seismicity that coincides with the axis of the Reelfoot rift.","language":"English","publisher":"GeoScienceWorld","doi":"10.1785/gssrl.69.4.350","issn":"00128287","usgsCitation":"Crone, A.J., 1998, Defining the southwestern end of the Blytheville Arch, northeastern Arkansas: Delimiting a seismic source zone in the New Madrid region: Seismological Research Letters, v. 69, no. 4, p. 350-358, https://doi.org/10.1785/gssrl.69.4.350.","productDescription":"9 p.","startPage":"350","endPage":"358","costCenters":[],"links":[{"id":231133,"rank":1,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/thumbnails/outside_thumb.jpg"}],"country":"United States","state":"Arkansas","otherGeospatial":"Blytheville Arch, northeastern Arkansas","geographicExtents":"{\n  \"type\": \"FeatureCollection\",\n  \"features\": [\n    {\n      \"type\": \"Feature\",\n      \"properties\": {},\n      \"geometry\": {\n        \"coordinates\": [\n          [\n            [\n              -91.11344917911748,\n              36.51604411880402\n            ],\n            [\n              -91.11344917911748,\n              35.86883949799797\n            ],\n            [\n              -90.41890155924816,\n              35.86883949799797\n            ],\n            [\n              -90.41890155924816,\n              36.51604411880402\n            ],\n            [\n              -91.11344917911748,\n              36.51604411880402\n            ]\n          ]\n        ],\n        \"type\": \"Polygon\"\n      }\n    }\n  ]\n}","volume":"69","issue":"4","noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"5059fe3ae4b0c8380cd4ebe3","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Crone, Anthony J. 0000-0002-3006-406X crone@usgs.gov","orcid":"https://orcid.org/0000-0002-3006-406X","contributorId":790,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Crone","given":"Anthony","email":"crone@usgs.gov","middleInitial":"J.","affiliations":[{"id":300,"text":"Geologic Hazards Science Center","active":true,"usgs":true}],"preferred":true,"id":385906,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1}]}}

Ground-water withdrawals in the basin \r\nare concentrated in and around the city of Albuquerque. Because of \r\nrapid increases in population and associated ground-water pumpage, \r\na network of wells was established cooperatively by the City of \r\nand the U.S. Geological Survey between April 1982 and September 1983 \r\nto monitor changes in ground-water levels throughout the basin. \r\nExpansion of this network has been identified as an essential element \r\nin plans to study the relation between surface water and ground water \r\nin the basin. An inventory of existing wells in the Albuquerque \r\nmetropolitan area has brought together information on about 400 wells \r\nthat either are being monitored for water levels or would be good \r\ncandidates for monitoring. About 115 wells or well sites are proposed \r\nas additions to the current 128-well ground-water-level monitoring \r\nnetwork for the Middle Rio Grande Basin. The North Canadian River alluvium is a reliable source of ground water for agriculture, industry, and cities in Canadian County and is the only ground-water source capable of meeting large demands. This study was undertaken to collect and analyze data to describe the hydrogeology and ground-water quality of the North Canadian River alluvium within the Concho Reserve. \r\nThe alluvium forms a band about 2 miles long and 0.5 mile wide along the southern edge of the Concho Reserve. Thickness of the alluvium ranges from 19 to 75 feet thick and averages about 45 feet in the study area. Well cuttings and natural gamma-ray logs indicate the alluvium consists of interfingering lenses of clay, silt, and sand. The increase of coarse-grained sand and the decrease of clay and silt with depth suggests that the water-bearing properties of the aquifer within the study area improve with depth. A clay layer in the upper part of the aquifer may be partially responsible for surface water ponding in low areas after above normal precipitation and may delay the infiltration of potentially contaminated water from land surface.\r\n\r\nSpecific conductance measurements indicate the ground-water quality improves in a northern direction towards the terrace. Water-quality properties, bacteria counts, major ion and nutrient concentrations, trace-element and radionuclide concentrations, and organic compound concentrations were measured in one ground-water sample at the southern edge of the Concho Reserve and comply with the primary drinking-water standards. Measured concentrations of iron, manganese, sulfate, and total dissolved solids exceed the secondary maximum contaminant levels set for drinking water. The ground water is a calcium sulfate bicarbonate type and is considered very hard, with a hardness of 570 milligrams per liter as calcium carbonate.","language":"ENGLISH","publisher":"U.S. Geological Survey ;\r\nBranch of Information Services [distributor],","doi":"10.3133/ofr97657","issn":"0094-9140","usgsCitation":"Becker, C., 1998, Hydrogeology and water quality of the North Canadian River alluvium, Concho Reserve, Canadian County, Oklahoma: U.S. Geological Survey Open-File Report 97-657, v, 27 p. :ill., maps ;28 cm., https://doi.org/10.3133/ofr97657.","productDescription":"v, 27 p. :ill., maps ;28 cm.","costCenters":[],"links":[{"id":155022,"rank":0,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1997/0657/report-thumb.jpg"},{"id":51976,"rank":300,"type":{"id":11,"text":"Document"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1997/0657/report.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}}],"noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e4a4ae4b07f02db62517f","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Becker, C.J.","contributorId":64269,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Becker","given":"C.J.","email":"","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":188273,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1}]}}
