A federal-state collaborative study found that diazinon accounted for most of the observed toxicity of San Joaquin River water to water fleas in February 1993. Previous studies focused mainly on west-side inputs to the San Joaquin River. In this 1994 study, the three major east-side tributaries to the San Joaquin River, the Merced, Tuolumne, and Stanislaus Rivers, and a downstream site on the San Joaquin River were sampled throughout the hydrographs of a late January and an early February storm. In both storms, the Tuolumne River had the highest concentrations of diazinon and transported the largest load of the three tributaries. The Stanislaus River was a small source in both storms. On the basis of previous storm sampling and estimated traveltimes, ephemeral west-side creeks probably were the main diazinon source early in the storms, whereas the Tuolumne and Merced Rivers and east-side drainages directly to the San Joaquin River were the main sources later. Although 74 percent of diazinon transport in the San Joaquin River during 1991-1993 occurred in January and February, transport during each of the two 1994 storms was only 0.05 percent of the amount applied during preceding dry periods. Nevertheless, some of the diazinon concentrations in the San Joaquin River during the January storm exceeded 0.35 micrograms per liter, a concentration shown to be acutely toxic to water fleas. Annual loads were estimated by use of the Minimum Variance Unbiased Estimator (MVUE) model\r\nat 95 sites with continuous streamflow data. Trends were estimated by use of either the MVUE or the\r\nSeasonal Kendall test at 202 sites and are presented in tables in this report. The river basin model is being developed by Georgia Department of Natural Resources, Environmental Protection Division, as part of their Chattahoochee River Modeling Project. Concurrent streamflow data collected at 19 continuous-record, and 31 partial-record streamflow stations, were used in ordinary least-squares linear regression analyses to define estimating equations, and in verifying drainage-area prorations. The resulting regression or drainage-area ratio estimating equations were used to compute hourly streamflow at the partial-record stations. The coefficients of determination (r-squared values) for the regression estimating equations ranged from 0.90 to 0.99.\r\n\r\nObserved and estimated hourly and daily streamflow data were computed for May 1, 1995, through October 31, 1995. Water-quality samples were collected from  \r\nthe Rio Grande at Picacho Bridge near Las Cruces, New Mexico; from the \r\nsampling site at the City of Las Cruces wastewater-treatment plant; and \r\nfrom the Rio Grande at Calle del Norte Bridge near Mesilla, New Mexico. \r\nThe samples were collected on 12 days from August 6, 1996, to February \r\n28, 1997, and were analyzed for a suite of dissolved and total constituents \r\nincluding trace metals. Instantaneous stream discharge was measured \r\nconcurrently with collection of the Rio Grande samples. At the wastewater- \r\ntreatment plant, the City of Las Cruces provided instantaneous discharge \r\nrates concurrent with sampling. In May 1997, 58 samples were collected from 1.5 m (meters) depth within a 250 m by 250 m grid at the ADRS. Measured concentrations ranged from 16 ± 9 to 36,900 ± 300 tritium units (TU), decreasing from northeast to southwest, possibly along an ancestral Amargosa River channel.</p><p>The 10 air ports at test hole UZB-2 also were sampled, including ports at 57.6, 106.4, and 108.8 m depths that had not been sampled since 1994. Of the remaining seven ports, five were sampled in 1994, 1995, and 1996, and two were sampled in 1994 and 1996. Tritium concentrations at the four ports deeper than 50 m ranged from 791 ± 15 to 1765 ± 29 TU, having increased since they were last sampled. Tritium concentrations at the six ports shallower than 50 m ranged from 367 ± 11 to 1283 ± 20 TU, and appear to have stabilized since 1996.</p><p>Tritium concentration in water vapor collected from air within the creosote bush canopy was 75 ± 9 TU near test hole UZB-2 and 9 ±6 TU near the uncontaminated Fischer test hole, 3.2 km to the south. Elevated tritium concentration in air near test hole UZB-2 was attributed to plant transpiration removing water from the unsaturated zone. The U.S. Geological Survey (USGS), in cooperation with the Bureau of Land Management (BLM), is collecting these ownership files and compiling them in Environmental Systems Research Institute, Inc. (ESRI) ARC/INFO coverages, to form a standardized data library. A coverage is a digital version of a map in the form of vector data storage. These coverages are combined with models of coal deposits from the USGS National Coal Resource Assessment project, a five-year effort to identify and characterize the coal beds and coal zones that will provide fuel for the Nation’s energy needs during the first quarter of the twenty-first century. The basis of these estimates is the U.S. Geological Survey's 1995 National Assessment of oil and gas resources (Gautier and others, 1996). Onshore Federal Lands account for about 29 percent of US land area but only 5.1 percent of 1995 US oil production and 8.8 percent of 1995 US gas production. Estimates are as of January 1994.
