These summaries of references are designed to aid in library research on metallic and nonmetallic (other than mineral fuels and construction materials) mineral occurrences in the Petersburg quadrangle, Alaska. All references to reports of the Geological Survey, to most reports of the U.S. Bureau of Mines, and to most reports of the State of Alaska Division of Geological and Geophysical Surveys and its predecessor State and Territorial agencies released before May 1, 1978, are summarized. Certain, mainly statistical, reports such as the annual Minerals Yearbook of the U.S. Bureau of Mines and most biennial and annual reports of the State of Alaska Division of Geological and Geophysical Surveys and its predecessor State and Territorial agencies are not included.

The bulk of the coal resources occurs in rocks of the Nanushuk Group of Early and Late Cretaceous age. The Nanushuk Group is a wedge-shaped unit of marginal marine and nonmarine rocks that is as thick as 3300 m (11,000 feet) just west of NPR-A. Within the reserve, coal occurs primarily in the middle and thicker portions of this clastic wedge and occurs stratigraphically in the upper half of the section. Specific data on individual coal beds or zones are scarce, and estimates of identified coal resources of about 49.5 billion tons represent a sampling of coal resources too small to give a realistic indication of the potential resources for an area so large. Estimates of undiscovered resources suggest hypothetical resources of between 330 billion and 3.3 trillion tons. Major post-Carboniferous sedimentary basins whose centers lie offshore on the Beaufort Shelf extend onshore in the northern part of the study area. There is strong evidence that dense basement rocks beneath these onshore extensions rise to relatively shallow depths along the northeast Alaskan coast. Geologic studies and interpretation of the gravity data indicate that the gross structural and stratigraphic framework of this area is similar to that of the Prudhoe Bay region to the west.
A high potential for petroleum accumulation in the Wildlife Range is indicated by the surface presence of oil seeps, oil sands, and outcrops of reservoir and source rocks along the southern margins of the onshore basinal areas. Present data suggest that the greatest potential for onshore accumulations of hydrocarbons lies in the area south and east of Barter Island and that possibilities exist there for commercially substantial reserves. The potential of this area cannot be fully assessed, however, until the subsurface extent of several major unconformities is known. Unfortunately, gravity data alone are of little use in such determinations.
South of the mountain front, large granitic intrusions are marked by a sharply defined gravity minimum. The subsurface distribution of these bodies could probably be mapped by detailed gravity surveys. Detailed aeromagnetic surveys should serve equally well for such a purpose.

sediments of the Gubik Formation of the Arctic Coastal Plain (Smith and Mertie, 1930; Black, 1951 and 1964; O'Sullivan, 1961). Descriptions of eolian landforms of the coastal plain have been published by several authors, including Black (1951), Rickert and Tedrow (1967), and Walker (1967 and 1973). Many of the dunes discussed by these authors are associated with modern floodplains. Black (1951), however, outlined an area of stabilized longitudinal, parabolic, and multicyclic dunes occurring over an area of 12,950 sq km west of the Colville River, which includes the area discussed in this report. Black (1951, p. 93) characterized the dunes as being most abundant on crests of ridges and other topographic irregularities, and pointed out that they are commonly associated with the cut banks of large lakes and streams. He described the longitudinal dunes as generally less than 1,000 m long, but as much as 2,500 m in length and stated that they \"...appear to be only a few feet thick, although some may be as much as 10 to 20 feet thick.\" Field investigations during the summer of 1977 on the Arctic Coastal Plain (Williams and others, 1977) disclosed that, over at least a portion of this area, the ridges upon which the small dunes described by Black are superimposed, and the cut banks associated with the dunes, consist of eolian deposits that comprise the major part of the Gubik Formation.

Stormy weather interrupted the planned data collection, during which time supplemental profiles and samples were collected in Prince William Sound including Montague Strait, Valdez Arm, Port Valdez, and Columbia Bay (Fig. 1). High resolution seismic profile records were made using a 600 Joule Del Norte Minisparker along 1151 km of track lines as shown on maps 1 and 2. Sediment samples collected with grab samplers (58) and gravity core (3) and bottom camera stations (14) are also shown on the track line maps and on figures 2 and 3.
This report indicates the seismic reflection records and shipboard logs that are publicly available and includes track line maps and a text that; (1) shows examples of characteristic seismic profiles, (2) describes geologic hazards observed on specific profiles, and (3) includes summary descriptions of sediment samples and bottom photographs.

Ozette Lake is a large, deep lake and a natural rearing area and for young sockeye. In the summer of 1976 water temperatures preferred for the growth of young sockeye (45-68 degrees Fahrenheit) occurred between about 200 feet of depth and the water surface, or generally in the zone of steep temperature gradient. Dissolved-oxygen concentrations in excess of 8.0 milligrams per liter at all depths throughout the year provided an adequate supply of oxygen for sockeye production. In comparison with eight other sockeye-producing lakes in Washington and Alaska, the concentrations of zooplankton in Ozette Lake appear adequate to support the rearing of sockeye salmon. In Big River and Umbrella Creek, tributaries to Ozette Lake, the streambed areas with gravels suitable for spawning were calculated to be about 39,000 and 31 ,000 square yards, respectively. If those areas were completely utilized they would accommodate about 13,000 and 10,000 spawning sockeye females, respectively. (Woodard-USGS)

The objective of this cruise was to study in detail specific potentially hazardous environmental conditions identified as a result of the first reconnaissance geo-environmental cruise conducted from June 18 through July 30, 1976 (Bouma and Hampton, 1976; Hampton and Bouma, 1976). In particular, the distribution and movement of seafloor bedforms were studied in lower Cook Inlet, and sediment dispersal patterns and submarine sediment slides were investigated on the Kodiak shelf and slope. High resolution seismic profiling (sparker, uniboom, minisparker, 3.5 khz, 12 khz) and side-scanning sonar surveys formed the basis for selecting stations for observations with bottom television and 70 mm bottom camera as well as for different types of sampling of surficial sediments (piston corer, gravity corer, hydroplastic corer, Soutar grab sampler). The success of the 1977 cruise was limited by adverse weather conditions.

Certain, mainly statistical, reports such as the annual Minerals Yearbook of the U.S. Bureau of Mines and biennial and annual reports of the Alaska Division of Geological and Geophysical Surveys and its predecessor State and Territorial agencies are not included. Also not included are data on many claims about which little more than their locations is known (for example, MacKevett and Holloway, 1977, p. 18). These omissions should not be interpreted as a judgement on my part that the claims are not valid mineral occurrences, but only that there are insufficient data to describe any mineral deposit that might be present.

The two modes occur at 54 ? 4 and 37 ? 3 weight per cent chromic oxide corresponding to chromite designated as high-chromium and high-aluminum chromite respectively. The high-chromium chromite occurs exclusively with highly magnesian olivine (Fo92-97) and some interstitial diopside. The high-aluminum chromite is associated with more ferrous olivine (Fo88-92), diopside, enstatite, and feldspar.\r\n\r\nThe plot of the mole ratios Cr/(Cr+Al+Fe3+) vs. Mg/(Mg+Fe2+) usually presented for alpine chromite is shown to have a high-chromium, high-iron to low-chromium, low-iron trend contrary to that shown by stratiform chromite. This trend is characteristic of alpine type chromite and is termed the alpine trend. However, a trend similar to that for startiform chromite is discernable on the graph for the high-chromium chromite data. This latter trend is well-developed at Red Mountain, Seldovia, Alaska.\r\n\r\nAnalysis of the iron-magnesium distribution coefficient, Kd=(Fe/Mg)ol/(Fe/Mg)ch, between olivine and chromite shows that Kd for the high-chromium chromite from all ultramafic complexes has essentially the same constant value of .05 while the distribution coefficient for the high-aluminum chromite varies with composition of the chromite. These distribution coefficients are also characteristic of alpine-type chromites. The constant value for Kd for the high-chromium chromite and associated high-magnesium olivine in all alpine complexes suggests that they all crystallized under similar physico-chemical conditions.\r\n\r\nThe two types of massive chromite and their associations of silicate minerals suggest the possibility of two populations with different origins.
