The pattern of radiometric ages is complex, reflecting the complex geologic history of this area. Local and regional radiometric evidence suggests that the southern Brooks Range schist belt has, at least in part, undergone a late Precambrian metamorphism and that the parent sedimentary and igneous rocks for the metamorphic rocks dated as late Precambrian are at least this old (Precambrian Z). \r\n\r\nThis schist terrane experienced a major thermal event in mid-Cretaceous time, causing widespread resetting of nearly all K-Ar mica ages. A series of apparent ages intermediate between late Precambrian and mid-Cretaceous are interpreted as indicating varying amounts of partial argon loss from older rocks during the Cretaceous event. The schist belt is characterized by dominant metasediments and subordinate metabasites and metafelsites. Blueschists occur within the schist belt from the Chandalar quadrangle westward to the Baird Mountains quadrangle, but geologic evidence does not support the existence of a fossil subduction zone.","language":"English","publisher":"U.S. Geological Survey","doi":"10.3133/ofr78254","usgsCitation":"Turner, D.L., Forbes, R.B., and Mayfield, C., 1978, K-Ar geochronology of the Survey Pass, Ambler River and Eastern Baird Mountains quadrangles, southwestern Brooks Range, Alaska: U.S. Geological Survey Open-File Report 78-254, Report: 41 p.; 3 Plates: 30.18 × 22.68 inches or smaller, https://doi.org/10.3133/ofr78254.","productDescription":"Report: 41 p.; 3 Plates: 30.18 × 22.68 inches or smaller","costCenters":[],"links":[{"id":407878,"rank":6,"type":{"id":36,"text":"NGMDB Index Page"},"url":"https://ngmdb.usgs.gov/Prodesc/proddesc_14658.htm","linkFileType":{"id":5,"text":"html"}},{"id":140106,"rank":0,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1978/0254/report-thumb.jpg"},{"id":34647,"rank":402,"type":{"id":17,"text":"Plate"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1978/0254/plate-3.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":34646,"rank":401,"type":{"id":17,"text":"Plate"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1978/0254/plate-2.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":34645,"rank":400,"type":{"id":17,"text":"Plate"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1978/0254/plate-1.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":34648,"rank":300,"type":{"id":11,"text":"Document"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1978/0254/report.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}}],"scale":"250000","country":"United States","state":"Alaska","otherGeospatial":"Survey Pass, Ambler River, and eastern Baird Mountains quadrangles","geographicExtents":"{\n  \"type\": \"FeatureCollection\",\n  \"features\": [\n    {\n      \"type\": \"Feature\",\n      \"properties\": {},\n      \"geometry\": {\n        \"type\": \"Polygon\",\n        \"coordinates\": [\n          [\n            [\n              -160.5,\n              67\n            ],\n            [\n              -153,\n              67\n            ],\n            [\n              -153,\n              68\n            ],\n            [\n              -160.5,\n              68\n            ],\n            [\n              -160.5,\n              67\n            ]\n          ]\n        ]\n      }\n    }\n  ]\n}","noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e4b32e4b07f02db6b4893","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Turner, Donald L.","contributorId":11604,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Turner","given":"Donald","email":"","middleInitial":"L.","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":154981,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1},{"text":"Forbes, R. The objective of this cruise was to study in detail specific potentially hazardous environmental conditions identified as a result of the first reconnaissance geo-environmental cruise conducted from June 18 through July 30, 1976 (Bouma and Hampton, 1976; Hampton and Bouma, 1976). In particular, the distribution and movement of seafloor bedforms were studied in lower Cook Inlet, and sediment dispersal patterns and submarine sediment slides were investigated on the Kodiak shelf and slope. High resolution seismic profiling (sparker, uniboom, minisparker, 3.5 khz, 12 khz) and side-scanning sonar surveys formed the basis for selecting stations for observations with bottom television and 70 mm bottom camera as well as for different types of sampling of surficial sediments (piston corer, gravity corer, hydroplastic corer, Soutar grab sampler). Because of this dynamic nature, special consideration must be made in planning for development, and. caution must be exercised in site selection for facilities to be emplaced in the coastal zone. All types of coastal processes from continuously active normal processes to the low frequency-high intensity rare event must be considered. Site-specific evaluation-s considering the broad range of possible processes must precede initiation of development. \r\n\r\nAn example of the relation between coastal processes and a proposed resource treatment facility is presented for Icy Bay, Alaska. Icy Bay is the only sheltered bay near many of the offshore tracts leased for petroleum exploration in the 1976 northern Gulf of Alaska OCS (Outer Continental Shelf) lease sale. Consequently, it has been selected as a primary onshore staging site for the support of offshore exploration and development. The environment of Icy Bay has many potentially hazardous features, including a submarine moraine at the bay mouth and actively calving glaciers at the bay's head which produce many icebergs. But most significant from the point of view of locating onshore facilities and pipeline corridors are the high rates of shoreline erosion and sediment deposition. If pipelines or any onshore staging facilities are to be placed in the coastal areas of Icy Bay, then the dynamic changes in shoreline position must be considered so that man-made structures will not be eroded away or be silted in before the completion of development.","language":"ENGLISH","publisher":"U.S. Geological Survey,","doi":"10.3133/ofr791693","usgsCitation":"Molnia, B.F., 1978, Impact of coastal processes on resource development with an example from Icy Bay, Alaska: U.S. Geological Survey Open-File Report 79-1693, 13 leaves, [6] leaves of plates :maps ;28 cm.; (20 p. - PGS), https://doi.org/10.3133/ofr791693.","productDescription":"13 leaves, [6] leaves of plates :maps ;28 cm.; (20 p. - PGS)","costCenters":[],"links":[{"id":142318,"rank":0,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1979/1693/report-thumb.jpg"},{"id":38212,"rank":300,"type":{"id":11,"text":"Document"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1979/1693/report.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}}],"noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e4a08e4b07f02db5f9c3e","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Molnia, Bruce F. bmolnia@usgs.gov","contributorId":4002,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Molnia","given":"Bruce","email":"bmolnia@usgs.gov","middleInitial":"F.","affiliations":[{"id":410,"text":"National Center","active":false,"usgs":true}],"preferred":false,"id":161289,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1}]}}

These included overflights in June 1975, June 1976, July 1976, January 1977, May 1977, and July 1977 when photographic observations were made from small fixed-wing aircraft and field observations in June 1975, July 1976, January 1977, and July 1977. Field observations consisted of measuring beach morphology, sediment distribution, and vegetation type, and characterization of beach dynamics between Fairweather Glacier and La Perouse Glacier.</p><p>Ninety sediment samples were collected and analyzed for grain size in the Menlo Park USGS sediment laboratory. Beach morphology at selected sites was determined by profiling from the limit of storm deposited debris (mostly wood) to the surf zone. In 1976, 30 profiles were made, ten of which were revisited in 1977. In all 55 profiles were measured.</p><p>A qualitative estimate of the effects of an oil spill for the Monument coastline between Sea Otter Creek and Icy Point as well as each of the profile stations has been made based on field observations and a susceptibility scheme by Hayes and Owens (Hayes et al., 1976; Owens, 1977).</p>","language":"English","publisher":"U.S. Geological Survey","doi":"10.3133/ofr78284","usgsCitation":"Molnia, B., and Wheeler, M.C., 1978, Report on the beach dynamics, geology, and oil spill susceptibility of the Gulf of Alaska coastline in Glacier Bay National Monument -- Sea Otter Creek to Icy Point: U.S. Geological Survey Open-File Report 78-284, Report: 192 p.; 1 Plate: 57.06 x 26.39 inches, https://doi.org/10.3133/ofr78284.","productDescription":"Report: 192 p.; 1 Plate: 57.06 x 26.39 inches","costCenters":[],"links":[{"id":427656,"rank":3,"type":{"id":17,"text":"Plate"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1978/0284/plate-1.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":427655,"rank":2,"type":{"id":11,"text":"Document"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1978/0284/report.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":142320,"rank":1,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1978/0284/report-thumb.jpg"}],"scale":"63360","country":"United States","state":"Alaska","otherGeospatial":"Glacier Bay National Monument, Gulf of Alaska","geographicExtents":"{\n  \"type\": \"FeatureCollection\",\n  \"features\": [\n    {\n      \"type\": \"Feature\",\n      \"properties\": {},\n      \"geometry\": {\n        \"coordinates\": [\n          [\n            [\n              -137.53401799170496,\n              59.1998623346941\n            ],\n            [\n              -137.53401799170496,\n              57.792257965501136\n            ],\n            [\n              -134.8601720979382,\n              57.792257965501136\n            ],\n            [\n              -134.8601720979382,\n              59.1998623346941\n            ],\n            [\n              -137.53401799170496,\n              59.1998623346941\n            ]\n          ]\n        ],\n        \"type\": \"Polygon\"\n      }\n    }\n  ]\n}","noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e4a58e4b07f02db62f328","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Molnia, Bruce","contributorId":92638,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Molnia","given":"Bruce","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":161293,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1},{"text":"Wheeler, Mark C.","contributorId":36135,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Wheeler","given":"Mark","email":"","middleInitial":"C.","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":161292,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":2}]}}

Detailed geologic mapping indicates that galena, sphalerite and pyrite occur sporadically in a zone at least 1,830 m. long and 6-30 m. wide. The sulfides occur in tuff, or in dark chert and dark shale adjacent to tuff in the upper part of the Lisburne Group of Mississippian age. The sulfides, together with the tuff, dark shale, and dark chert host, rocks probably are part of a stratiform, massive sulfide deposit that may have formed from volcanic exhalations. The stratiform occurrence of the sulfides is limited to a single thrust plate which is a part of a widespread tectonic breccia. The deposit may represent a fragment of a much more extensive stratiform deposit that was severely disrupted and dismembered by isoclinal folding, faulting and shearing. Other areas along the northern front of the Brooks Range particularly those associated with iron staining and the assemblage of dark chert, dark shale and tuff of the Lisburne Group should be examined for concentrations of galena and sphalerite. Because of the highly deformed nature of the terrain, further exploration should concentrate either on finding the edges of buried, dismembered fragments of the original stratiform deposit or on geophysical techniques that may locate the dismembered fragments at depth.</p>","language":"English","publisher":"U.S. Geological Survey","doi":"10.3133/ofr7870C","usgsCitation":"Nokleberg, W.J., and Winkler, G., 1978, Geologic setting of the lead and zinc deposits, Drenchwater Creek area, Howard Pass Quadrangle, Western Brooks Range, Alaska: U.S. Geological Survey Open-File Report 78-70, Report: 16 p.; 1 Plate: 39.74 x 32.95 inches, https://doi.org/10.3133/ofr7870C.","productDescription":"Report: 16 p.; 1 Plate: 39.74 x 32.95 inches","costCenters":[],"links":[{"id":423342,"rank":3,"type":{"id":17,"text":"Plate"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1978/0070-c/plate-1.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":423341,"rank":2,"type":{"id":11,"text":"Document"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1978/0070-c/report.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":144290,"rank":1,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1978/0070-c/report-thumb.jpg"}],"country":"United States","state":"Alaska","otherGeospatial":"Howard Pass Quadrangle, Western Brooks Range","geographicExtents":"{\n  \"type\": \"FeatureCollection\",\n  \"features\": [\n    {\n      \"type\": \"Feature\",\n      \"properties\": {},\n      \"geometry\": {\n        \"type\": \"Polygon\",\n        \"coordinates\": [\n          [\n            [\n              -156,\n              69\n            ],\n            [\n              -159,\n              69\n            ],\n            [\n              -159,\n              68\n            ],\n            [\n              -156,\n              68\n            ],\n            [\n              -156,\n              69\n            ]\n          ]\n        ]\n      }\n    }\n  ]\n}","noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e4ae0e4b07f02db688237","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Nokleberg, Warren J. 0000-0002-1574-8869 wnokleberg@usgs.gov","orcid":"https://orcid.org/0000-0002-1574-8869","contributorId":2077,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Nokleberg","given":"Warren","email":"wnokleberg@usgs.gov","middleInitial":"J.","affiliations":[{"id":312,"text":"Geology, Minerals, Energy, and Geophysics Science Center","active":true,"usgs":true}],"preferred":true,"id":161548,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1},{"text":"Winkler, Gary R.","contributorId":75513,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Winkler","given":"Gary R.","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":161549,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":2}]}}

These shoals have been referred to in several previous studies. Based on seismic reflection records, Reimnitz et al., (1972a), stated that the shoals are constructional features younger than the post-Wisconsin transgression. Large chunks of grounded ice have frequently been seen on the linear shoals of the inner shelf. These ice chunks form barriers parallel to the shore (Reimnitz, et al. 1972b). Reimnitz and Barnes (1974) considered the lack of gravel concentrations on the shoals to be evidence that the stream of pack ice drifting past northern Alaska carries very little gravel today. Lewellen (1977) referred to the linear shoals as submerged barrier islands, while Reimnitz, et al., (1977b) pointed out that, although similar in shape to barrier islands, the linear shoals are very different in composition and do not appear to represent drowned harrier islands. They show that the shoals localize the formation of major shear and pressure events in the ice, which in turn cause the formation of linear belts of deformed and grounded ice. Today the shoals appear to be migrating under the influence of ice-bottom interaction, and indeed may have formed in response to ice-bottom interaction within the \"stamukhi zone\". The shoals migrate rather slowly and retain their shapes over periods of 25 years, yet control the location and stabilize the outer edge of the floating fast ice zone, and provide shelter for the inner shelf and coast. An unusual occurrence of axinite as a possible primary constituent of a plutonic rock is in the Russian Mission quadrangle, Alaska. The four analyzed axinites from these widely different localities and from different host rocks are surprisingly similar in chemistry and optics. All are ferroaxinites, having high iron and low manganese and magnesium contents. The number of calcium ions is very close to two, which is in agreement with the idealized formula Ca<sub>2 </sub>(Fe,Mn,Mg)Al<sub>2</sub>BSi<sub>4</sub>O<sub>15</sub>(OH). The molluscan assemblages are from the upper 600 of the 1800-m-thick marine and nonmarine formation, which appears to be entirely of late Miocene age. The Skonun Formation is the strandline fa.cies of marginal marine and nonmarine deposits of the northwestern part of the Queen Charlotte basin, a Nieogene embayment paralleling the modern mainland coast. The molluscan fauna and associated lignite beds are known from a few widely scattered outcrops; they are indicative of alternating marine and nonmarine to brackish-water environments in the upper part of the formation. The Skonun fauna occurs near the northern boundary of the Pacific Northwest Neogene molluscan province. It is the only marine Neogene molluscan fauna known from the British Columbia coast. The deposit consists of slump blocks at the head, hummocky material farther out, and a vast apron of longitudinally ridged material extending to the toe. The landslide deposit resembles many terrestrial ones but is much larger, and differs from most in having longitudinal rather than transverse ridges on its surface. However, some terrestrial landslides also have longitudinal ridges, particularly those in Alaska that traveled long distances over glacial ice and thus were highly efficient. In order to explain this high efficiency, two possible mechanisms of emplacement are singled out. The first involves a sliding motion on a cushion of air; on Mars, this implies a once much denser atmosphere, or the release of a gas, possibly steam. The second mechanism involves a flow motion of debris that is lubricated by some water; on Mars, the water may have come from ice in the source rock. An analysis of the possible causes for the Martian slide shows that the Martian trough walls are highly susceptible to sliding, and that the landslide may have been triggered by a Mars quake.</span></p>","language":"English","publisher":"The Geological Society of America","doi":"10.1130/0016-7606(1978)89<1601:ALLOM>2.0.CO;2","usgsCitation":"Lucchitta, B.K., 1978, A large landslide on Mars: GSA Bulletin, v. 89, no. 11, p. 1601-1609, https://doi.org/10.1130/0016-7606(1978)89<1601:ALLOM>2.0.CO;2.","productDescription":"9 p.","startPage":"1601","endPage":"1609","costCenters":[{"id":131,"text":"Astrogeology Science Center","active":true,"usgs":true}],"links":[{"id":358659,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/thumbnails/outside_thumb.jpg"}],"volume":"89","issue":"11","noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Lucchitta, Baerbel K. blucchitta@usgs.gov","contributorId":3649,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Lucchitta","given":"Baerbel","email":"blucchitta@usgs.gov","middleInitial":"K.","affiliations":[],"preferred":true,"id":749379,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1}]}}

It probably extends still further southeastward into British Columbia along Work Channel and Chatham Sound – Grenville Channel.The megalineament is a zone a few hundred metres to 10 km (6 mi) wide in which closely spaced joints, foliation, compositional layering, and small faults define the megalineament trend. The zone usually coincides with topographic depressions apparently caused by selective fluvial and glacial erosion of the less resistant rocks of the zone.Studies in the Juneau, Endicott Arm, and Behm Canal areas indicate that the megalineament (1) is locally the site of lateral and (or) vertical separations of no greater than several kilometres; (2) does not mark a major structural or metamorphic discontinuity in the near-surface rocks; (3) may be located near a pre-metamorphic and pre-intrusive discontinuity; (4) is consistently associated with and parallel to steep gradients in both the gravity and aeromagnetic fields; and (5) probably is the surface expression of the western contact, at depth, of the intrusive rocks and gneisses of the Coast Range batholithic complex with the schists to the southwest.</span></p>","language":"English","publisher":"Canadian Science Publishing","doi":"10.1139/e78-184","usgsCitation":"Brew, D.A., and Ford, A.B., 1978, Megalineament in southeastern Alaska marks southwest edge of Coast Range batholithic complex: Canadian Journal of Earth Sciences, v. 15, no. 11, p. 1763-1772, https://doi.org/10.1139/e78-184.","productDescription":"12 p.","startPage":"1763","endPage":"1772","costCenters":[{"id":312,"text":"Geology, Minerals, Energy, and Geophysics Science Center","active":true,"usgs":true}],"links":[{"id":373714,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/thumbnails/outside_thumb.jpg"}],"country":"United States","state":"Alaska","geographicExtents":"{\n \"type\": \"FeatureCollection\",\n \"features\": [\n {\n \"type\": \"Feature\",\n \"properties\": {},\n \"geometry\": {\n \"type\": \"Polygon\",\n \"coordinates\": [\n [\n [\n -135.52734375,\n 59.72317714492064\n ],\n [\n -137.8125,\n 58.63121664342478\n ],\n [\n -132.8466796875,\n 54.3549556895541\n ],\n [\n -130.1220703125,\n 55.35413531021057\n ],\n [\n -133.74755859375,\n 58.64265251657599\n ],\n [\n -135.52734375,\n 59.72317714492064\n ]\n ]\n ]\n }\n }\n ]\n}","volume":"15","issue":"11","noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Brew, David A. dbrew@usgs.gov","contributorId":3244,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Brew","given":"David","email":"dbrew@usgs.gov","middleInitial":"A.","affiliations":[],"preferred":true,"id":786240,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1},{"text":"Ford, A. Volcanoes of this type are known as \"tuyas.\" The Togiak tuya erupted into an intraglacial lake in a hole thawed through a glacier that occupied Togiak Valley in Pleistocene time. The eruption was localized along the Togiak fault, which defines the east side of a shallow graben that is floored by older olivine basalt flows. The tuya, which has an area of 15 square kilometers, is a parallelogram. The flat summit, about 300 meters above the valley floor, is capped by glassy, fine-grained subaerial flows of alkali olivine basalt. To the north, the capping flows overlie palagonitized glassy tuffs; to the south, they overlie pillow basalts and breccia. The elevation of the pillow basalts indicates that surface of the melt-water lake was at least 250 m above present-day sea level. Basalt xenoliths in the tuffs and comparison with other better exposed tuyas suggest that the tuffs probably overlie an older pile of subaqueous pillow basalts that erupted beneath the intraglacial lake. The tuya overlies and is much younger than the preglacial flows on valley floor that yielded a potassium-argon age of 0.758±0.2 million years. </p>","language":"English","publisher":"U.S. Geological Survey","usgsCitation":"Hoare, J., and Coonrad, W.L., 1978, A tuya in Togiak Valley, Southwest Alaska: Journal of Research of the U.S. Geological Survey, v. 6, no. 2, p. 193-201.","productDescription":"9 p.","startPage":"193","endPage":"201","costCenters":[],"links":[{"id":403632,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/thumbnails/outside_thumb.jpg"},{"id":403630,"rank":1,"type":{"id":11,"text":"Document"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/journal/1978/vol6issue2/report.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}}],"country":"United States","state":"Alaska","otherGeospatial":"Togiak Valley","geographicExtents":"{\n \"type\": \"FeatureCollection\",\n \"features\": [\n {\n \"type\": \"Feature\",\n \"properties\": {},\n \"geometry\": {\n \"type\": \"Polygon\",\n \"coordinates\": [\n [\n [\n -160.98541259765625,\n 58.64408173742445\n ],\n [\n -159.93621826171875,\n 58.64408173742445\n ],\n [\n -159.93621826171875,\n 59.37239142233717\n ],\n [\n -160.98541259765625,\n 59.37239142233717\n ],\n [\n -160.98541259765625,\n 58.64408173742445\n ]\n ]\n ]\n }\n }\n ]\n}","volume":"6","issue":"2","noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Hoare, J.
