An unusual occurrence of axinite as a possible primary constituent of a plutonic rock is in the Russian Mission quadrangle, Alaska. The four analyzed axinites from these widely different localities and from different host rocks are surprisingly similar in chemistry and optics. All are ferroaxinites, having high iron and low manganese and magnesium contents. The number of calcium ions is very close to two, which is in agreement with the idealized formula Ca<sub>2 </sub>(Fe,Mn,Mg)Al<sub>2</sub>BSi<sub>4</sub>O<sub>15</sub>(OH). The indices of refraction increase slightly with increasing FeO:MgO ratio over the small range studied.</p>","language":"English","publisher":"U.S. Geological Survey","publisherLocation":"Arlington, VA","usgsCitation":"Hietanen, A., and Erd, R.C., 1978, Ferroaxinites from the Feather River area, northern California, and from the McGrath and Russian Mission quadrangles, Alaska: Journal of Research of the U.S. Geological Survey, v. 6, no. 5, p. 603-609.","productDescription":"7 p.","startPage":"603","endPage":"609","onlineOnly":"N","additionalOnlineFiles":"N","costCenters":[],"links":[{"id":307013,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/thumbnails/outside_thumb.jpg"},{"id":307007,"rank":1,"type":{"id":11,"text":"Document"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/journal/1978/vol6issue5/report.pdf","text":"Report","size":"31.11 MB","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"},"description":"Report"}],"country":"United States","state":"California, Alaska","otherGeospatial":"Feather River, McGrath and Russian Mission Quadrangles","geographicExtents":"{\n  \"type\": \"FeatureCollection\",\n  \"features\": [\n    {\n      \"type\": \"Feature\",\n      \"properties\": {},\n      \"geometry\": {\n        \"type\": \"Polygon\",\n        \"coordinates\": [\n          [\n            [\n              -121.49574279785156,\n              39.65751331590311\n            ],\n            [\n              -121.49574279785156,\n              39.92395554100352\n            ],\n            [\n              -120.95466613769531,\n              39.92395554100352\n            ],\n            [\n              -120.95466613769531,\n              39.65751331590311\n            ],\n            [\n              -121.49574279785156,\n              39.65751331590311\n            ]\n          ]\n        ]\n      }\n    },\n    {\n      \"type\": \"Feature\",\n      \"properties\": {},\n      \"geometry\": {\n        \"type\": \"Polygon\",\n        \"coordinates\": [\n          [\n            [\n              -162,\n              61\n            ],\n            [\n              -162,\n              62\n            ],\n            [\n              -159,\n              62\n            ],\n            [\n              -159,\n              61\n            ],\n            [\n              -162,\n              61\n            ]\n          ]\n        ]\n      }\n    },\n    {\n      \"type\": \"Feature\",\n      \"properties\": {},\n      \"geometry\": {\n        \"type\": \"Polygon\",\n        \"coordinates\": [\n          [\n            [\n              -156,\n              63\n            ],\n            [\n              -153,\n              63\n            ],\n            [\n              -153,\n              62\n            ],\n            [\n              -156,\n              62\n            ],\n            [\n              -156,\n              63\n            ]\n          ]\n        ]\n      }\n    }\n  ]\n}","volume":"6","issue":"5","noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"55d6fa32e4b0518e3546bc3e","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Hietanen, Anna","contributorId":43841,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Hietanen","given":"Anna","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":568895,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1},{"text":"Erd, Richard C.","contributorId":89899,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Erd","given":"Richard","email":"","middleInitial":"C.","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":568896,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":2}]}}

The deposit consists of slump blocks at the head, hummocky material farther out, and a vast apron of longitudinally ridged material extending to the toe. The landslide deposit resembles many terrestrial ones but is much larger, and differs from most in having longitudinal rather than transverse ridges on its surface. However, some terrestrial landslides also have longitudinal ridges, particularly those in Alaska that traveled long distances over glacial ice and thus were highly efficient. In order to explain this high efficiency, two possible mechanisms of emplacement are singled out. The first involves a sliding motion on a cushion of air; on Mars, this implies a once much denser atmosphere, or the release of a gas, possibly steam. The second mechanism involves a flow motion of debris that is lubricated by some water; on Mars, the water may have come from ice in the source rock. An analysis of the possible causes for the Martian slide shows that the Martian trough walls are highly susceptible to sliding, and that the landslide may have been triggered by a Mars quake.</span></p>","language":"English","publisher":"The Geological Society of America","doi":"10.1130/0016-7606(1978)89<1601:ALLOM>2.0.CO;2","usgsCitation":"Lucchitta, B.K., 1978, A large landslide on Mars: GSA Bulletin, v. 89, no. 11, p. 1601-1609, https://doi.org/10.1130/0016-7606(1978)89<1601:ALLOM>2.0.CO;2.","productDescription":"9 p.","startPage":"1601","endPage":"1609","costCenters":[{"id":131,"text":"Astrogeology Science Center","active":true,"usgs":true}],"links":[{"id":358659,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/thumbnails/outside_thumb.jpg"}],"volume":"89","issue":"11","noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Lucchitta, Baerbel K. blucchitta@usgs.gov","contributorId":3649,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Lucchitta","given":"Baerbel","email":"blucchitta@usgs.gov","middleInitial":"K.","affiliations":[],"preferred":true,"id":749379,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1}]}}

It probably extends still further southeastward into British Columbia along Work Channel and Chatham Sound – Grenville Channel.The megalineament is a zone a few hundred metres to 10 km (6 mi) wide in which closely spaced joints, foliation, compositional layering, and small faults define the megalineament trend. Volcanoes of this type are known as \"tuyas.\" The Togiak tuya erupted into an intraglacial lake in a hole thawed through a glacier that occupied Togiak Valley in Pleistocene time. The eruption was localized along the Togiak fault, which defines the east side of a shallow graben that is floored by older olivine basalt flows. The tuya, which has an area of 15 square kilometers, is a parallelogram. The flat summit, about 300 meters above the valley floor, is capped by glassy, fine-grained subaerial flows of alkali olivine basalt. To the north, the capping flows overlie palagonitized glassy tuffs; to the south, they overlie pillow basalts and breccia. The elevation of the pillow basalts indicates that surface of the melt-water lake was at least 250 m above present-day sea level. Basalt xenoliths in the tuffs and comparison with other better exposed tuyas suggest that the tuffs probably overlie an older pile of subaqueous pillow basalts that erupted beneath the intraglacial lake. The tuya overlies and is much younger than the preglacial flows on valley floor that yielded a potassium-argon age of 0.758±0.2 million years. </p>","language":"English","publisher":"U.S. Geological Survey","usgsCitation":"Hoare, J., and Coonrad, W.L., 1978, A tuya in Togiak Valley, Southwest Alaska: Journal of Research of the U.S. Geological Survey, v. 6, no. 2, p. 193-201.","productDescription":"9 p.","startPage":"193","endPage":"201","costCenters":[],"links":[{"id":403632,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/thumbnails/outside_thumb.jpg"},{"id":403630,"rank":1,"type":{"id":11,"text":"Document"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/journal/1978/vol6issue2/report.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}}],"country":"United States","state":"Alaska","otherGeospatial":"Togiak Valley","geographicExtents":"{\n  \"type\": \"FeatureCollection\",\n  \"features\": [\n    {\n      \"type\": \"Feature\",\n      \"properties\": {},\n      \"geometry\": {\n        \"type\": \"Polygon\",\n        \"coordinates\": [\n          [\n            [\n              -160.98541259765625,\n              58.64408173742445\n            ],\n            [\n              -159.93621826171875,\n              58.64408173742445\n            ],\n            [\n              -159.93621826171875,\n              59.37239142233717\n            ],\n            [\n              -160.98541259765625,\n              59.37239142233717\n            ],\n            [\n              -160.98541259765625,\n              58.64408173742445\n            ]\n          ]\n        ]\n      }\n    }\n  ]\n}","volume":"6","issue":"2","noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Hoare, J. We used detailed geophysical transects, side-scan sonar, underwater television, and chromatographic analyses of gases in near-surface sediments to define a probable source area of hydrocarbon gases at the southern apex of the water plume epicenter. Geophysical, geotechnical, and geochemical evidence together indicate that hydrocarbon gases of subsurface, thermogenic origin apparently migrate into the near surface sediments along a fault zone.</span><br><br><span>Subbottom reflector terminations on continuous seismic profiles outline a large zone of anomalous acoustic responses about 9 km in diameter and at 100-m depth that may be caused by a subsurface accumulation of gas. Gas migration from the accumulation to the surface sediment is indicated by smaller zones of reflector terminations observed in high-resolution profiles and by seafloor craters seen on underwater television at one station. The presence of gas-charged surface sediment also is suggested by low percent pore water saturation, greater penetration of the penetrometer, and more rapid penetration of the vibracorer in sediment at the station with near-surface acoustic anomalies and seafloor craters.</span><br><br><span>Analyses of hydrocarbon gases in sediments from a 1.6-m vibracore taken at this station showed unusually high concentrations of hydrocarbon gases heavier than methane; the ethane, propane, n-butane, and isobutane were 76, 4, 6, and 52 times greater than in other near-surface sediments in this region, and also significant quantities of gasoline-range hydrocarbons were present. The gas composition and presence in near-surface sediments above a thick underlying section with acoustic anomalies points to the possibility of petroleum at depth in this region. In the North Pacific, identification of Miocene and older volcanic episodes is possible only if both altered (bentonite) and unaltered ash beds are recognized. For instance, in 1835, the British naturalist Charles Darwin observed that sea level dropped by 2.7 meters during the large earthquake in Concepcion, CHile. From this piece of evidence and the terraces along the beach that he saw, Darwin concluded that the Andes had grown to their present height through earthquakes. Much more recently, George Plafker and James C. Savage of the U.S Geological Survey have shown, from barnacle lines, that the great 1960 Chile and the 1964 Alaska earthquakes caused several meters of vertical displacement of the shoreline.&nbsp;</p>","language":"English","publisher":"U.S Geological Survey","usgsCitation":"Wyss, M., 1978, Sea-level changes before large earthquakes: Earthquake Information Bulletin (USGS), v. 10, no. 5, p. 165-168.","productDescription":"4 p.","startPage":"165","endPage":"168","onlineOnly":"N","additionalOnlineFiles":"N","costCenters":[],"links":[{"id":314813,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/thumbnails/outside_thumb.jpg"}],"volume":"10","issue":"5","noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"56a75569e4b0b28f1184d879","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Wyss, M.","contributorId":68880,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Wyss","given":"M.","email":"","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":589685,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1}]}}

For example, in a recent issue of the&nbsp;<i>Earthquake Information Bulletin,</i> we saw how the pioneering work of S.A. Fedotov of the U.S.S.R in the Kamchatka-Kurile Islands region has been applied worldwide to forecast where large, shallow earthquakes might occur in the next decades. Indeed, such a \"seismic gap\" off the coast of Alaska was filled by the 1972 Sitka earthquake. Promising results are slowly accumulating from other techniques that suggest that intermediate-term precursors might also be seen: among these are tilt and geomagnetic anomalies and anomalous land uplift. But the crucial point remains that short-term precursors (days to hours) will be needed in many cases if there is to be a significant saving of lives.&nbsp;</p>","language":"English","publisher":"U.S Geological Survey","usgsCitation":"Lindh, A., 1978, Amplitude of foreshocks as a possible seismic precursor to earthquakes: Earthquake Information Bulletin (USGS), v. 10, no. 5, p. 162-164.","productDescription":"3 p.","startPage":"162","endPage":"164","onlineOnly":"N","additionalOnlineFiles":"N","costCenters":[],"links":[{"id":319263,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/thumbnails/outside_thumb.jpg"}],"volume":"10","issue":"5","noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"56f3be2be4b0f59b85e02d97","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Lindh, A.G.","contributorId":24784,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Lindh","given":"A.G.","email":"","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":623400,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1}]}}

Where sea otters are abundant, sea urchins are small and scarce in shallow water, and the association of fleshy macroalgae apparently is regulated by competition. Sea urchins are larger and more abundant in deeper water, where they are less accessible to sea otters. Macroalgae are most abundant, and competition in the plant association is severest, near the sublittoral fringe where sea otters can remove sea urchins most efficiently. In deep water, competition among maccroalgae is reduced because the light intensity is lower and grazing by sea urchins increases. On islands where sea otters are absent, sea urchins are abundant, large, and are probably limited by intraspecific competition; and they have eliminated fleshly macroalgae. Available data suggest that the association of Laminaria spp. and Agarum cribrosum contributes most to primary production in nearshore areas of the western Aleutian Islands. Where sea otters are absent and sea urchins have eliminated this plant association, some higher trophic forms also are absent or less abundant than where sea otters are common and the plant association is well developed. Earlier studies of sea otter food suggested that low—density populations of sea otters consume primarily sea urchins and mollusks in the western Aleutian Islands. Later studies of high—density populations showed a wider variety of foods consumed, with fish an important component of the diet. These studies support our observations on the differences in availability of these foods between islands with and without sea otters.</span></p>","language":"English","publisher":"Ecological Society of America","doi":"10.2307/1938786","usgsCitation":"Estes, J.E., Smith, N.S., and Palmisano, J.F., 1978, Sea otter predation and community organization in the western Aleutian Island, Alaska: Ecology, v. 59, p. 822-833, https://doi.org/10.2307/1938786.","productDescription":"12 p.","startPage":"822","endPage":"833","numberOfPages":"12","costCenters":[{"id":651,"text":"Western Ecological Research Center","active":true,"usgs":true}],"links":[{"id":130172,"rank":1,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/thumbnails/outside_thumb.jpg"}],"volume":"59","noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e4a0ce4b07f02db5fc57d","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Estes, J. Data from stomach contents were corrected for differential digestion of prey items. Longspurs shifted seasonally from larval to adult arthropods and back to larvae, responding to changes in the abundance of these prey items. Seeds were a vital supplementary food in late May and Aug., when arthropods were scarce or inaccessible. One species of crane fly was the major dietary component for longspurs during June and July. Its high abundance and substantial dry weight per individual may contribute to the success of longspurs at Barrow. The diets of longspurs and 4 common shorebirds (Calidris spp.) at Barrow were similar in the range of prey items taken except for seeds and tenthredinid larvae. Their diets overlapped closely when feeding sites were restricted because of snow and surface water (chiefly at the beginning of the season) and when prey was abundant in early to mid-July. Competition is possible early in the season but unlikely in July when surface insects are very abundant. Habitat separation and the advantages of fringillid form apparently contribute to the success of longspors in a tundra community of insectivores dominated by shorebirds.","language":"English","publisher":"Oxford Academic","doi":"10.2307/1368039","usgsCitation":"Custer, T., and Pitelka, F., 1978, Seasonal trends in summer diet of the lapland longspur near Barrow Alaska USA: The Condor, v. 80, no. 3, p. 295-301, https://doi.org/10.2307/1368039.","productDescription":"7 p.","startPage":"295","endPage":"301","numberOfPages":"7","costCenters":[{"id":606,"text":"Upper Midwest Environmental Sciences Center","active":true,"usgs":true}],"links":[{"id":503054,"rank":2,"type":{"id":41,"text":"Open Access External Repository Page"},"url":"https://digitalcommons.usf.edu/condor/vol80/iss3/6","text":"External Repository"},{"id":133933,"rank":1,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/thumbnails/outside_thumb.jpg"}],"volume":"80","issue":"3","noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e4a0ce4b07f02db5fc2ec","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Custer, T. The spectral behavior of the magnetic field from this current was analyzed using data from standard geomagnetic observatories to establish the predictable patterns of temporal and spatial changes for field pulsation periods between 5 min and 4 hr. Such behavior is presented in a series of tables, graphs and formulae. Using 2- and 3-layer models of the conducting earth, the induced electric fields associated with the geomagnetic changes were established. From the direct relationship of the current to the geomagnetic field variation patterns one can infer counterpart temporal and spatial characteristics of the pipeline current. The relationship of the field amplitudes to geomagnetic activity indices, Ap, and the established occurrence of various levels of Ap over several solar cycles were employed to show that about half of the time the induced currents in the pipe would be under 1 A for the maximum response oscillatory periods near 1 hr. Such currents should be of minimal consequence in corrosion effects for even a section of the pipeline unprotected by sacrificial electrodes. Of greater interest was the result that the extreme surges of current should reach over one-hundred amperes in the pipeline during high activity. ?? 1978 Birkha??user Verlag.","largerWorkType":{"id":2,"text":"Article"},"largerWorkTitle":"Pure and Applied Geophysics PAGEOPH","largerWorkSubtype":{"id":10,"text":"Journal Article"},"language":"English","publisherLocation":"Birkha??user-Verlag","doi":"10.1007/BF00874677","issn":"00334553","usgsCitation":"Campbell, W., 1978, Induction of auroral zone electric currents within the Alaska pipeline: Pure and Applied Geophysics PAGEOPH, v. 116, no. 6, p. 1143-1173, https://doi.org/10.1007/BF00874677.","startPage":"1143","endPage":"1173","numberOfPages":"31","costCenters":[],"links":[{"id":222417,"rank":0,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/thumbnails/outside_thumb.jpg"},{"id":205234,"rank":9999,"type":{"id":10,"text":"Digital Object Identifier"},"url":"https://dx.doi.org/10.1007/BF00874677"}],"volume":"116","issue":"6","noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"505a3aafe4b0c8380cd61eaa","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Campbell, W.H.","contributorId":30749,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Campbell","given":"W.H.","email":"","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":363601,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1}]}}
