The August 1993 flood is compared with the Federal Emergency Management Agency's (FEMA) 100- and 500-year flood profiles.<br />This atlas is one of a series of USGS reports that documents the 1993 flooding in the upper Mississippi River Basin. Previous measurements of land subsidence and ground-water levels in the study area indicated that ground-water pumping induced tensional stresses in the playa, which were sporadically relieved through the formation of long cracks. Drying of the sediments beneath the playa also may have accelerated the natural formation of giant desiccation polygons. When water flows across the playa, the cracks erode into fissures of sufficient width and depth to endanger traffic on the playa. Topographic surveys of the playa were made to derive a contour map that would allow examination of erosive flow paths. Crack networks were surveyed in selected areas during 1995 and compared with cracks visible in aerial photographs taken in 1990. Crack networks remained visible in their positions following several inundations of the playa. These sources of nutrients may potentially affect surface- and ground-water quality, so knowledge about the relative importance of each source may assist in the management of surface and ground waters within the study unit. The relative importance of each nutrient source was expected to vary among each of the four drainage basins due to differences in land use across the study unit.</p>\n<p>Fertilizer and livestock manure were potentially large sources of nitrogen and phosphorus in each of the four drainage basins. However, nitrogen in legume residues was a more important source in the Upper Mississippi, St. Croix, and Lower Mississippi River Basins because hay comprised a larger part of the total acreage of crops grown in these basins. Atmospheric deposition comprised a larger percentage of the nitrogen sources in the St. Croix River Basin compared to the other three drainage basins probably because amounts of the other sources are relatively low. Nitrogen and phosphorus yields in streams were greatest in the Lower Mississippi River Basin and the Minnesota River Basin, where amounts of nonpoint sources of these constituents also were the Water samples were collected by State and Federal agencies for pesticides (366) and nitrate (410) between 1971 and 1994 from wells completed in surficial sand and gravel aquifers. State agencies in Minnesota and Wisconsin have developed models to determine areas where ground water is susceptible to contamination based on geologic and hydrologic conditions (Schmidt, 1987, and Porcher, 1989). Water-quality data is evaluated with respect to the ground-water susceptibility models. The results also are evaluated with respect to overlying land use and land cover. Samples from wells with detectable levels of one or more pesticides or nitrate concentrations exceeding the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency's (USEPA) Maximum Contaminant Level (MCL) of 10 milligrams per liter (mg/L) generally coincided with areas of high contamination susceptibility. Furthermore, samples from wells located in areas of high contamination susceptibility had pesticide detection frequencies and nitrate concentrations that correlated to overlying land use and land cover. Samples from wells located in high susceptibility areas that were surrounded by cropland had greater pesticide detection frequencies and greater nitrate concentrations than wells located in similar susceptibility areas but surrounded by different land use and land cover types such as forest, urban, and wetlands.</span></p>","language":"English","publisher":"U.S. Geological The Lake District immediately began to gather information needed for the preparation of a comprehensive lake-management plan that would be used to protect the natural and recreational assets of the lake. The Lake District completed a land-use inventory of the watershed and an evaluation of available lake water-quality data. The land-use data were used to assess the potential contribution of nutrients to the lake from the watershed. The evaluation of lake water-quality data, which were collected as part of the Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources (WDNR) Self-Help Monitoring Program, indicated the lake has relatively good water quality. Before a comprehensive lake-management plan could be prepared, however, a better understanding of several aspects of the lake and its surroundings was needed. To address those aspects including the definition of the lake's hydrology and the principal sources of nutrients, and the relation of the lake's water quality to nutrient loading the U.S. Geological Survey, in cooperation with the Lake District and the WDNR (through a Lake Management Planning Grant), conducted a study of Kirby Lake and its watershed. Public concern has been expressed that \nsome of these constituents could migrate through the \nSnake River Plain aquifer to the Snake River in the Twin \nFalls-Hagerman area Because of these concerns the \nU.S. Department of Energy (DOE) requested that the U.S. \nGeological Survey (USGS) conduct three studies to gain a \ngreater understanding of the chemical quality of water in \nthe aquifer. One study described a one-time sampling \neffort for radionuclides, trace elements, and organic \ncompounds in the eastern part of the A&B Irrigation \nDistrict in Minidoka County (Mann and Knobel, 1990). \nAnother ongoing study involves sampling for tritium from \n19 springs on the north side of the Snake River in the \nTwin Falls-Hagerman area (Mann, 1989; Mann and Low, \n1994). A third study an ongoing annual sampling effort \nin the area between the southern boundary of the INEEL \nand Hagerman (figure 1) (hereafter referred to as the \nMagic Valley study area), is being conducted with the \nIdaho Department of Water Resources in cooperation with \nthe DOE. Data for a variety of radiochemical and \nchemical constituents from this study have been published \nby Wegner and Campbell (1991); Bartholomay, Edwards, \nand Campbell (1992, 1993, 1994a, 1994b); and \nBartholomay, Williams, and Campbell (1995, 1996, \n1997b). Data discussed in this fact sheet were taken from \nthese reports. An evaluation of data collected during the \nfirst four years of this study (Bartholomay Williams, and \nCampbell, 1997a) showed no pattern of water-quality \nchange for radionuclide data as concentrations randomly \nincreased or decreased.
