Despite this dependence, no information exists regarding the distribution and abundance of Baltic clams, and changes that occur in Baltic clam populations over time. We conducted benthic surveys to determine the distribution and abundance of Macoma balthica and M. mitchelli in major tributaries of the upper and middle Chesapeake Bay. Tributaries sampled included the Chester River south to Monie Bay on the Eastern Shore, and Middle River to the Potomac River on the western shore of Maryland. Data on depth, bottom type, shellfish, and submerged aquatic vegetation were recorded. The Baltic clam had the highest frequency of occurrence (50%), followed by M. mitchelli (36%). Other species of clams occurred in less than 14% of the 2995 sites sampled. In addition, every third month since June 1991, we have studied seasonal changes in Baltic clam abundance and recruitment at 13 high abundance sites. Recruitment was recorded at only one high density site (97% increase) between June and September transect surveys. Clam length histograms clearly indicated a new year class and depletion of older cohorts. Average summer decline in Baltic clam abundance at the other 12 sites was 59% and ranged from -11% to -97%. Based on clam length, younger cohorts were depleted at a higher rate. More than half of the Baltic clam population was depleted during the summer and spring recruitment was low.","largerWorkType":{"id":4,"text":"Book"},"largerWorkTitle":"Proceedings of the Second Marine and Estuarine Shallow Water Science and Management Conference: April 3-7, 1995, Atlantic City, New Jersey","largerWorkSubtype":{"id":4,"text":"Other Government Series"},"language":"English","publisher":"U. After 5 additional weeks of training, these juvenile cranes were led south ca 600 km to a wintering area on the Arizona/Mexico border. Nine of the 10 survived the trek, 495 km of which was flown, although only a few cranes flew every stage of the route. Their longest flight was 77 km. Major problems during the migration were power line collisions (three, one fatal), eagle attacks (none fatal), and overheating (when air temperatures exceeded ca 25?C). All cranes that entered training quickly learned to follow the truck, and their tenacity when following under unfavorable conditions (e.g., poor light, extreme dust, or heat) showed that cranes could consistently be led over long distances. We cannot predict if the cranes will retrace their route unassisted when adults, but 2 cranes returned 130 km to the starting point of the migration after the flock was scattered by an eagle during our migration south. Three other cranes were recovered 55 km from the attack site and on course toward the starting point.","largerWorkType":{"id":4,"text":"Book"},"largerWorkTitle":"Proceedings of the Seventh North American Crane Workshop","largerWorkSubtype":{"id":4,"text":"Other Government Series"},"language":"English","publisher":"North American Crane Working Group","publisherLocation":"Grand Island, Nebraska","collaboration":"January 10-13, 1996, Biloxi, Miss.","usgsCitation":"Ellis, D.H., Clauss, B., Watanabe, T., Mykut, R., Kinloch, M., and Ellis, C.H., 1997, Results of an experiment to lead cranes on migration behind motorized ground vehicles, chap. of Proceedings of the Seventh North American Crane Workshop, p. 114-122.","productDescription":"ix, 262","startPage":"114","endPage":"122","costCenters":[{"id":531,"text":"Patuxent Wildlife Research Center","active":true,"usgs":true}],"links":[{"id":202333,"rank":0,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/thumbnails/outside_thumb.jpg"}],"noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e4a2de4b07f02db6144ef","contributors":{"editors":[{"text":"Urbanek, Richard P.","contributorId":38400,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Urbanek","given":"Richard","email":"","middleInitial":"P.","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":507333,"contributorType":{"id":2,"text":"Editors"},"rank":1},{"text":"Stahlecker, Dale W.","contributorId":113728,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Stahlecker","given":"Dale","email":"","middleInitial":"W.","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":507334,"contributorType":{"id":2,"text":"Editors"},"rank":2}],"authors":[{"text":"Ellis, D. Conversely, in 1978-80 mean numbers of black duck pairs (11.9/100 ha surface water) and broods (10.8/100 ha surface water) were lower than for 1958-60 (pairs = 23.3; broods = 13.3) for wetlands surveyed in both periods. Areas studied ranged in size from 2 to 35 acres and were constructed by private companies under contract with three mitigation agencies. Adjacent natural forested wetlands were used as reference sites where similar data were collected. Based on data from the first four years of this study it appears that it will take 35-50 years before these areas have forested wetland vegetation and wildlife similar to that found on mature forested wetlands. This long-time period is based on the high mortality and slow growth of nursery-stock trees and shrubs transplanted on the areas. Mortality and slow growth resulted mostly from excessive surface water on the sites. The level of ground water did not appear to be a factor in regard to transplant mortality. Green ash was the woody transplant species that had the least mortality. Sampling of vegetative ground cover with one-meter square quadrats showed the predominance of grasses and herbs. Many of the elements measured in HGM are physical rather than ecological or biological. The HGM approach, therefore, provides information on certain aspects of wetlands and omits other aspects. In contrast, the Index of Biological Integrity (IBI) approach focuses on biological components of wetlands such as species richness, the presence or proportion of certain 'indicator' species, representation of different trophic levels, and measures of wildlife or fish health. Here too, some aspects of a wetland are omitted and others not covered by HGM are included. We contend that these differences in focus add strengths and weaknesses to each method. This paper reviews progress on the development of IBIs for restored depressional wetlands in the Mid-Atlantic States, especially Maryland and Delaware. During our first field season we identified 25 wetlands ranging from 1-10 acres, most of which were restored with federal, state, and private landowner cooperation over hydric soils. Separate IBIs are being created for macrophytes, macroinvertebrates, amphibians, and data on mammal and avian populations are being collected. Simultaneously, chemical and physical data are being collected on water DO, turbidity, temperature, conductivity, nitrates, ammonia, chlorophyll, pH; soil metal levels and texture; and wetland size, configuration, hydrology, drainage area, and surrounding land use. For aquatic organisms, Al bioavailability and toxicity are intimately related to ambient pH; changes in ambient acidity may affect Al solubility, dissolved Al speciation, and organism sensitivity to Al. At moderate acidity (pH 5.5 to 7.0), fish and invertebrates may be stressed due to Al adsorption onto gill surfaces and subsequent asphyxiation. At pH 4.5 to 5.5, Al can impair ion regulation and augment the toxicity of H+. At lower pH, elevated Al can temporarily ameliorate the toxic effects of acidity by competing for binding sites with H+. Aluminum toxicity in aquatic environments is further affected by the concentration of ligands such as dissolved organic matter, fluoride, or sulfate, and of other cations such as Ca and Mg which compete for cellular binding sites. Although risk of Al toxicity is often based on a model of free-ion (Al3+) activity, recent evidence suggests that factors determining Al toxicity may be more complex. In general, aquatic invertebrates are less sensitive to Al toxicity and acidity than fish; thus acidified, Al-rich waters may actually reduce predation pressure. Fish may be affected by asphyxiation at moderate acidic conditions or electrolyte imbalances at lower pH. In amphibians, embryos and young larvae are typically more sensitive than older larvae. Early breeding amphibians, which lay eggs in ephemeral ponds and streams subject to spring runoff, are most at risk from Al and acidification; those that breed later in the year in lakes or rivers are least vulnerable. Birds and mammals are most likely exposed through dietary ingestion of soil or Al-contaminated foods. Concentrations > 1000 mg.kg-1 in food may be toxic to young birds and mammals. Clinical signs in these animals are consistent with rickets because Al precipitates with P in the gut. Suggestions for additional research on the ecotoxicology of Al to wild animals are provided.","largerWorkType":{"id":4,"text":"Book"},"largerWorkTitle":"Research Issues in Aluminum Toxicity","largerWorkSubtype":{"id":4,"text":"Other Government Series"},"language":"English","publisher":"Taylor & Francis","publisherLocation":"Washington, DC","collaboration":"Chapter 3 in book PDF on file: 5151_Sparling.pdf 280 kb","usgsCitation":"Sparling, D.W., Lowe, T., and Campbell, P., 1997, Ecotoxicology of aluminum to fish and wildlife, chap. of Research Issues in Aluminum Toxicity, p. 47-68.","productDescription":"xi, 256","startPage":"47","endPage":"68","costCenters":[{"id":531,"text":"Patuxent Wildlife Research Center","active":true,"usgs":true}],"links":[{"id":202132,"rank":0,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/thumbnails/outside_thumb.jpg"}],"noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e4a4be4b07f02db6258dc","contributors":{"editors":[{"text":"Yokel, Robert A.","contributorId":112913,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Yokel","given":"Robert","email":"","middleInitial":"A.","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":507225,"contributorType":{"id":2,"text":"Editors"},"rank":1},{"text":"Golub, Mari S.","contributorId":113968,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Golub","given":"Mari","email":"","middleInitial":"S.","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":507226,"contributorType":{"id":2,"text":"Editors"},"rank":2}],"authors":[{"text":"Sparling, D. Impoundments were of three major designs: impounded ravines, excavated basins, and impounded swamps. Over 50 species of wetland plants were transplanted to impoundments of Patuxent to determine best species for relatively infertile waters. The wood duck was the only waterfowl species commonly observed on the Refuge when the area was established. Waterfowl, including Canada geese, mallards, and black ducks, were introduced and numerous techniques developed to improve nesting and brood habitat. The impoundments also provide migration and wintering habitat to 24 species of waterfowl. Management techniques include drawdowns of water every 35 years in most impoundments to decrease problems from floating plants and to oxidize organic material. Drawdowns are timed to allow sufficient time for waterfowl brood development in the spring, but also allow optimum time for the development of plant species (e. g., red-rooted sedge and smartweed) that grow in moist soil conditions. This procedure has become known as moist-soil management and is now used on many state and federal wildlife refuges throughout the country. Research on the impounded wetlands at Patuxent during the 1950-70s included evaluation of vegetation in regard to water level management, nest box design to reduce use of boxes by starlings, and imprinting of waterfowl to elevated nesting structures to reduce predation on nests, especially from raccoons. During the 1980-90s, new smaller impoundments were constructed to increase the possibilities of conducting research on acid precipitation and to act as tertiary treatment of wastewater coming from the National Wildlife Visitor Center. Lakes and ponds at Patuxent Research Refuge are presently used for multiple purposes including wildlife habitat, flood control, nutrient removal, fire fighting, environmental education, recreation (especially fishing and hunting), and research. Techniques include: complete mow, strip mow, low volume foliar spray, selective basal spray, and tree topping. One hundred and one bird species were recorded during line transect sampling along the right-of-way. The eastern towhee had the highest frequency of occurrence followed by the field sparrow and the common yellowthroat. The field sparrow had the highest numbers per visit followed by the eastern towhee and eastern bluebird. Fifteen species were recorded in numbers greater than ten individuals per visit in at least one season of the year. Nine species of mammals were trapped in live traps during the study and four other mammal species were observed but not captured. Twelve species of amphibians and six species of reptiles were trapped in pitfall or funnel traps. Differences in the distribution of species seemed to be related to the physical and hydrological features of the right-of-way. Although no major differences in the distribution of wildlife species resulted from the vegetation management, differences are expected in the future as vegetation differences become more pronounced.
