These basins supply ground water to local water  districts, military bases, and private wells. The rapid growth in  population in these basins, which is due, in part, to their proximity toLos Angeles, has increased the demand for water and, therefore, the need  to understand the Mojave ground-water systems. Ground-water conditions for the Mojave River, the Morongo, and  the Fort Irwin ground-water basins for 1996 and areas with significant  changes in water levels are identified in this report. Water-level data  were compiled for 632 wells in the study area during January-September  1996 to define the water- table surface and direction of ground-watermovement. These data were used to construct the water-table map included  in this report. Also shown on the map are 31 hydrographs that show  long-term water-level changes in the study area. Short-term water-level  changes were determined and a water- level change map was made by  comparing 1996 ground-water conditions to 1990-94 conditions in the  Mojave ground-water basin and to 1994 conditions in the Morongo and the  Fort Irwin ground-water basins. In general, ground-water levels and the direction of ground-water  movement in the regional aquifer have not changed significantly since  previously published maps (1995). However, the short-term water level did  change at specific locations in all three ground-water basins. Water  levels in the Mojave River ground-water basin had a maximum rise during  the period 1992-96 of 52 feet and a maximum decline of 28. Water levels  in the Morongo ground-water basin had a maximum rise of 66 feet and a  maximum decline of 57 feet. The Fort Irwin ground-water basins, however,  had relatively little change in water level with a maximum rise of 6 feet  and a maximum decline of 8 feet. Hydrographs in the regional aquifer systemindicate a decline or, in some areas, no change in the water table during  the period of record. Water levels in the shallow alluvial aquifer,  generally within 1 mile of the Mojave River, fluctuate in response to  streamflow. Ground-water levels rise during wet periods, when floodflows  in the Mojave River recharge the shallow alluvial aquifer.","language":"English","publisher":"U.S. Geological Survey","doi":"10.3133/wri974160","usgsCitation":"Mendez, G.O., and Christensen, A.H., 1997, Regional water table (1996) and water-level changes in the Mojave River, the Morongo, and the Fort Irwin ground-water basins, San Bernardino County, California: U.S. Geological Survey Water-Resources Investigations Report 97-4160, Report: iv, 34 p.; 1 Plate: 37.83 × 36.26 iinches, https://doi.org/10.3133/wri974160.","productDescription":"Report: iv, 34 p.; 1 Plate: 37.83 × 36.26 iinches","costCenters":[],"links":[{"id":408065,"rank":4,"type":{"id":36,"text":"NGMDB Index Page"},"url":"https://ngmdb.usgs.gov/Prodesc/proddesc_48774.htm","linkFileType":{"id":5,"text":"html"}},{"id":57533,"rank":300,"type":{"id":11,"text":"Document"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/wri/1997/4160/report.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":57532,"rank":400,"type":{"id":17,"text":"Plate"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/wri/1997/4160/plate-1.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":159243,"rank":0,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/wri/1997/4160/report-thumb.jpg"}],"country":"United States","state":"California","county":"San Bernardino County","otherGeospatial":"Mojave River, Morongo, and Fort Irwin ground-water basins","geographicExtents":"{\n  \"type\": \"FeatureCollection\",\n  \"features\": [\n    {\n      \"type\": \"Feature\",\n      \"properties\": {},\n      \"geometry\": {\n        \"type\": \"Polygon\",\n        \"coordinates\": [\n          [\n            [\n              -117.6667,\n              34.0833\n            ],\n            [\n              -116,\n              34.0833\n            ],\n            [\n              -116,\n              35.3458\n            ],\n            [\n              -117.6667,\n              35.3458\n            ],\n            [\n              -117.6667,\n              34.0833\n            ]\n          ]\n        ]\n      }\n    }\n  ]\n}","noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e4a2be4b07f02db612c36","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Mendez, Gregory O. 0000-0002-9955-3726 gomendez@usgs.gov","orcid":"https://orcid.org/0000-0002-9955-3726","contributorId":1489,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Mendez","given":"Gregory","email":"gomendez@usgs.gov","middleInitial":"O.","affiliations":[{"id":154,"text":"California Water Science Center","active":true,"usgs":true}],"preferred":false,"id":200238,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1},{"text":"Christensen, Allen H. 0000-0002-7061-5591 ahchrist@usgs.gov","orcid":"https://orcid.org/0000-0002-7061-5591","contributorId":1510,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Christensen","given":"Allen","email":"ahchrist@usgs.gov","middleInitial":"H.","affiliations":[{"id":154,"text":"California Water Science Center","active":true,"usgs":true}],"preferred":true,"id":200239,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":2}]}}

A reservoir system formed by three hydroelectric dams on the lower Susquehanna River is currently trapping a major part of the phosphorus and suspended-sediment loads from the basin and, to a lesser extent, the nitrogen loads.

In the summer of 1996, the U. S. Geological Survey collected bathymetric data along 64 cross sections and 40 bottom-sediment samples along 14 selected cross sections in the lower Susquehanna River reservoir system to determine the remaining sediment-storage capacity, refine the current estimate of when the system may reach sediment-storage capacity, document changes in the reservoir system after the January 1996 flood, and determine the remaining nutrient mass in Conowingo Reservoir. Results from the 1996 survey indicate an estimated total of 14,800,000 tons of sediment were scoured from the reservoir system from 1993 (date of previous bathymetric survey) through 1996. This includes the net sediment change of 4,700,000 tons based on volume change in the reservoir system computed from the 1993 and 1996 surveys, the 6,900,000 tons of sediment deposited from 1993 through 1996, and the 3,200,000 tons of sediment transported into the reservoir system during the January 1996 flood. The January 1996 flood, which exceeded a 100-year recurrence interval, scoured about the same amount of sediment that normally would be deposited in the reservoir system during a 4- to 6-year period.

Concentrations of total nitrogen in bottom sediments in the Conowingo Reservoir ranged from 1,500 to 6,900 mg/kg (milligrams per kilogram); 75 percent of the concentrations were between 3,000 and 5,000 mg/kg. About 96 percent of the concentrations of total nitrogen consisted of organic nitrogen. Concentrations of total phosphorus in bottom sediments ranged from 286 to 1,390 mg/kg. About 84 percent of the concentrations of total phosphorus were comprised of inorganic phosphorus. The ratio of concentrations of plant-available phosphorus to concentrations of total phosphorus ranged from 0.6 to 3.5 percent; ratios generally decreased in a downstream direction.

About 29,000 acre-feet, or 42,000,000 tons, of sediment can be deposited before Conowingo Reservoir reaches sediment-storage capacity. Assuming the average annual sediment-deposition rate remains unchanged and no scour occurs due to floods, the reservoir system could reach sediment-storage capacity in about 17 years. The reservoir system currently is trapping about 2 percent of the nitrogen, 45 percent of the phosphorus, and 70 percent of the suspended sediment transported by the river to the upper Chesapeake Bay. Once the reservoir reaches sediment-storage capacity, an estimated 250-percent increase in the current annual loads of suspended sediment, a 2-percent increase in the current annual loads of total nitrogen, and a 70-percent increase in the current annual loads of total phosphorus from the Susquehanna River to Chesapeake Bay can be expected. If the goal of a 40-percent reduction in controllable phosphorus load from the Susquehanna River Basin is met before the reservoirs reach sediment-storage capacity, the 40-percent reduction goal will probably be exceeded when the reservoir system reaches sediment-storage capacity.
","language":"English","publisher":"U.S. Geological Survey","publisherLocation":"Reston, VA","doi":"10.3133/wri974138","usgsCitation":"Langland, M.J., and Hainly, R.A., 1997, Changes in bottom-surface elevations in three reservoirs on the lower Susquehanna River, Pennsylvania and Maryland, following the January 1996 flood — Implications for nutrient and sediment loads to Chesapeake Bay: U.S. Geological Survey Water-Resources Investigations Report 97-4138, Report: vi, 34 p.; 3 Plates: 24.75 x 31.00 inches or smaller, https://doi.org/10.3133/wri974138.","productDescription":"Report: vi, 34 p.; 3 Plates: 24.75 x 31.00 inches or smaller","numberOfPages":"42","onlineOnly":"N","costCenters":[{"id":532,"text":"Pennsylvania Water Science Center","active":true,"usgs":true}],"links":[{"id":57070,"rank":300,"type":{"id":11,"text":"Document"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/wri/1997/4138/wri19974138.pdf","text":"Report","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"},"description":"WRI 1997-4138"},{"id":365710,"rank":5,"type":{"id":17,"text":"Plate"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/wri/1997/4138/plate-3.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":365709,"rank":4,"type":{"id":17,"text":"Plate"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/wri/1997/4138/plate-1.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":365708,"rank":3,"type":{"id":17,"text":"Plate"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/wri/1997/4138/plate-2.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":394723,"rank":6,"type":{"id":36,"text":"NGMDB Index Page"},"url":"https://ngmdb.usgs.gov/Prodesc/proddesc_48757.htm"},{"id":124979,"rank":0,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/wri/1997/4138/coverthb.jpg"}],"scale":"24000","country":"United States","state":"Maryland, Pennsylvania","otherGeospatial":"Susquehanna River","geographicExtents":"{\n  \"type\": \"FeatureCollection\",\n  \"features\": [\n    {\n      \"type\": \"Feature\",\n      \"properties\": {},\n      \"geometry\": {\n        \"type\": \"Polygon\",\n        \"coordinates\": [\n          [\n            [\n              -76.5966796875,\n              39.65328414777011\n            ],\n            [\n              -76.08993530273438,\n              39.65328414777011\n            ],\n            [\n              -76.08993530273438,\n              40.07491896000657\n            ],\n            [\n              -76.5966796875,\n              40.07491896000657\n            ],\n            [\n              -76.5966796875,\n              39.65328414777011\n            ]\n          ]\n        ]\n      }\n    }\n  ]\n}","contact":"
Director, Pennsylvania Water Science Center
U.S. Geological Survey
215 Limekiln Road
New Cumberland, PA 17070
","tableOfContents":"

Abstract

Introduction

Study approach and methods

Current bottom-surface elevations and changes, 1993 through 1996

Capacity change in Conowingo Reservoir, 1928 through 1996

Reservoir system sediment transport during the flood of January 1996

Implications of current and future reservoir conditions

Summary

References cited

","noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e49e5e4b07f02db5e6d3b","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Langland, Michael J. 0000-0002-8350-8779 langland@usgs.gov","orcid":"https://orcid.org/0000-0002-8350-8779","contributorId":2347,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Langland","given":"Michael","email":"langland@usgs.gov","middleInitial":"J.","affiliations":[{"id":532,"text":"Pennsylvania Water Science Center","active":true,"usgs":true}],"preferred":true,"id":199457,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1},{"text":"Hainly, Robert A. rahainly@usgs.gov","contributorId":1679,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Hainly","given":"Robert","email":"rahainly@usgs.gov","middleInitial":"A.","affiliations":[],"preferred":true,"id":199456,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":2}]}}

The 1996 winter balance, averaged over the glacier, was 2.94 meters, and the net balance was 0.10meter. The winter balance was approximately 0.6 meter greater than the 1977-95 average winter balance (2.30 meters). The net balance, which was positive for the first time since 1984, was more than a meter greater than the 1977-95 average net balance (-0.96 meter). The region, covering approximately 100,000 km 2 along the Nevada-California border near Las Vegas, is characterized by isolated mountain ranges juxtaposed against broad, alluvium-filled valleys. Geologic conditions are typical of the Basin and Range Province; a variety of sedimentary and igneous intrusive and extrusive rocks have been subjected to both compressional and extensional deformation. The regional ground-water flow system can best be described as a series of connected intermontane basins in which ground-water flow occurs in basin-fill deposits, carbonate rocks, clastic rocks, and volcanic rocks. Previous investigations have developed more site-specific hydrogeologic relationships; however, few have described all the lithologies within the Death Valley regional ground-water flow system.\r\n\r\nInformation required to characterize the hydrogeologic units in the region was obtained from regional geologic maps and reports. Map data were digitized from regional geologic maps and combined into a composite map using a geographic information system. This map was simplified to show 10 laterally extensive hydrogeologic units with distinct hydrologic properties. The hydraulic conductivity values for the hydrogeologic units range over 15 orders of magnitude due to the variability in burial depth and degree of fracturing. Eighteen counties were declared Federal and State disaster areas. Cost estimates of damage in Ohio from the flooding are nearly $180 million. About 6,500 residences and more than 800 businesses were affected by flooding. Nearly 20,000 persons were evacuated, and 5 deaths were attributed to the flooding.\r\n\r\nRecord peak stage and streamflow were recorded at U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) streamflow-gaging stations on Ohio Brush Creek near West Union and Shade River near Chester. The peak streamflow at these two locations exceeded the estimate of the 100-year-recurrence- interval peak streamflow.\r\n\r\nThe recurrence intervals of peak stream flow at selected USGS streamflow gaging stations throughout southern Ohio ranged from less than 2 years to greater than 100 years. Stormwater samples were collected from the stream during storms. Between storms, water samples were collected from the stream and from a network of monitoring wells in the headwaters area. The detention basin was constructed as part of a pilot project to increase aquifer recharge while decreasing the discharge of contaminated stormwater to coastal waters.

Bacteria and road salt were the major contaminants detected in stormwater samples, and the concentrations of organic compounds and nutrients in the samples rarely exceeded New York State drinking-water standards. Lead and chromium were detected in only a few of the stormwater samples, and cadmium was not detected in any of the samples.

Loads of most inorganic constituents in stormwater reflected the season and the magnitude of the storm and were proportional to the total stormwater volume measured at the headwaters area. Stormwater during the nonwinter (non-road-salting) season had a diluting effect on shallow ground water adjacent to the stream.

Large amounts of sodium and chloride that entered the stream and ground water after road-salt applications to the Westbury drainage area affected the ground-water quality beneath and adjacent to the stream for several months. Concentrations of sodium and chloride in streamwater on March 6, 1989, reached 1,700 mg/L (milligrams per liter) and 2,700 mg/L, respectively, as a result of road salt washed in by stormwater. Median concentrations of sodium and chloride in wells in an area affected by road salt were generally several times higher than concentrations in shallow wells in unaffected suburban areas. Since 1990, extensive water-quality data have been collected for a comprehensive study of potential eutrophication of Coeur d'Alene Lake and for assessment of the environmental effects of past mining and ore-processing activities in the South Fork Coeur d'Alene River valley. Although the South Fork Coeur d'Alene River provided only about 20 percent of the Coeur d'Alene River's annual discharge to Coeur d'Alene Lake, it contributed as much as 84 percent of the annual cadmium and 83 percent of the annual zinc loads entering the Lake. The South Fork contributed at most 14 percent of the annual lead and 21 percent of the copper loads carried by the Coeur d'Alene River to Coeur d'Alene Lake. Cadmium, copper, and zinc loads more than doubled between the upstream and downstream boundaries of the Bunker Hill (Kellogg, Idaho) Superfund site in water years 1993 and 1994; lead load increased 24 percent and 33 percent, respectively, in water years 1993 and 1994. Zinc was transported primarily in a dissolved or colloidal phase, the major source being the South Fork Coeur d'Alene River valley, downstream from the Elizabeth Park gaging station. Lead was transported primarily as particulate material, the major source being sediments eroded from the main-stem Coeur d'Alene River channel and flood plain. Annual lead and zinc loads at Rose Lake were significantly larger than at Harrison or Cataldo, indicating entrainment of trace elements in the reach between Cataldo and Rose Lake, and subsequent deposition or loss in the reach between Rose Lake and Harrison.","language":"English","publisher":"U.S. Geological Survey","publisherLocation":"Boise, Idaho","doi":"10.3133/ofr97398","usgsCitation":"Beckwith, M.A., Woods, P.F., and Berenbrock, C., 1997, Trace-element concentrations and transport in the Coeur d'Alene river, Idaho, water years 1993-94: U.S. Geological Survey Open-File Report 97-398, iii, 7 p., https://doi.org/10.3133/ofr97398.","productDescription":"iii, 7 p.","numberOfPages":"10","temporalStart":"1993-01-01","temporalEnd":"1994-12-31","costCenters":[{"id":343,"text":"Idaho Water Science Center","active":true,"usgs":true}],"links":[{"id":155051,"rank":0,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1997/0398/report-thumb.jpg"},{"id":51978,"rank":300,"type":{"id":11,"text":"Document"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1997/0398/report.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}}],"country":"United States","state":"Idaho","otherGeospatial":"Coeur D'alene River","geographicExtents":"{ \"type\": \"FeatureCollection\", \"features\": [ { \"type\": \"Feature\", \"properties\": {}, \"geometry\": { \"type\": \"Polygon\", \"coordinates\": [ [ [ -117.0,47.0 ], [ -117.0,48.0 ], [ -115.0,48.0 ], [ -115.0,47.0 ], [ -117.0,47.0 ] ] ] } } ] }","noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e4a4de4b07f02db627321","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Beckwith, Michael A.","contributorId":66670,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Beckwith","given":"Michael","email":"","middleInitial":"A.","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":188277,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1},{"text":"Woods, Paul F.","contributorId":82273,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Woods","given":"Paul","email":"","middleInitial":"F.","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":188278,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":2},{"text":"Berenbrock, Charles","contributorId":30598,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Berenbrock","given":"Charles","email":"","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":188276,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":3}]}}

A steady-state, ground-water flow model was constructed for a previous study to simulate February 1993 hydrologic conditions, which were assumed to be an acceptable estimate of the ground-water system at equilibrium. The flow model was modified for this study to simulate six hypothetical pumping scenarios: five pumping scenarios to simulate hypothetical pumping at five pumping scenario sites, and a total pumping scenario to simulate cumulative hypothetical pumping from the five pumping scenario sites.
\n
The evaluation of drawdown for the six hypothetical pumping scenarios indicates that hypothetical pumping causes simulated drawdown that varies from about 10 ft to greater than 50 ft relative to February 1993 conditions at the five hypothetical pumping scenario sites. The simulated drawdown is less than half of the estimated saturated thickness of the alluvium during February 1993 at these sites.
\n
The primary sources of water (inflows) to the alluvium needed to balance the increased ground-water withdrawals (outflows) caused by hypothetical pumping are a combination of increased river leakage and decreased leakage to Muscatine Slough. Compared to February 1993 conditions, larger inflow rates occur as river leakage from the Mississippi River for the six hypothetical pumping scenarios. However, smaller outflow rates to Muscatine Slough compared to February 1993 conditions indicate that an important source of water for hypothetical pumping is ground-water discharge that would have become streamflow in the slough.
\n
Increased pumping at the hypothetical pumping scenario sites could affect long-term water quality and hydrology in the study area. The greater amounts of river leakage might affect overall ground-water quality in the alluvium. The lesser amounts of ground water being discharged to streamflow could have a long-term impact on the hydrology of the slough and adjacent wetland areas.
\n
The simplified steady-state flow model does not account for dynamic (transient) conditions (natural or development-related). The steady-state model does not indicate time needed to reach new equilibrium conditions. Attaining equilibrium might take many years and is complicated by varying climatic and hydrologic conditions; noncontinuous pumping and pumping that is cycled among well fields; and changing and seasonally varying irrigation pumpage.
","language":"English","publisher":"U.S. Geological Survey","publisherLocation":"Iowa City, IA","doi":"10.3133/wri974162","collaboration":"Prepared in cooperation with Muscatine Power and Water, Muscatine, Iowa","usgsCitation":"Lucey, K., 1997, Evaluation of drawdown and sources of water in the Mississippi River alluvium caused by hypothetical pumping, Muscatine, Iowa: U.S. Geological Survey Water-Resources Investigations Report 97-4162, iv, 18 p., https://doi.org/10.3133/wri974162.","productDescription":"iv, 18 p.","onlineOnly":"N","additionalOnlineFiles":"N","costCenters":[{"id":351,"text":"Iowa Water Science Center","active":true,"usgs":true}],"links":[{"id":119673,"rank":0,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/wri/1997/4162/report-thumb.jpg"},{"id":57268,"rank":300,"type":{"id":11,"text":"Document"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/wri/1997/4162/report.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}}],"country":"United States","state":"Illinois, Iowa","geographicExtents":"{\n  \"type\": \"FeatureCollection\",\n  \"features\": [\n    {\n      \"type\": \"Feature\",\n      \"properties\": {},\n      \"geometry\": {\n        \"type\": \"Polygon\",\n        \"coordinates\": [\n          [\n            [\n              -91.2083333333333333,\n              41.43333333333333\n            ],\n            [\n              -91.2083333333333333,\n              41.25\n            ],\n            [\n              -91,\n              41.25\n            ],\n            [\n              -91,\n              41.43333333333333\n            ],\n            [\n              -91.2083333333333333,\n              41.43333333333333\n            ]\n          ]\n        ]\n      }\n    }\n  ]\n}","noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e4a09e4b07f02db5fae3c","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Lucey, K.J.","contributorId":70002,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Lucey","given":"K.J.","email":"","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":199850,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1}]}}

Available coal is the quantity of the total coal resource that is accessible for mine development under current regulatory, land-use, and technologic constraints. This first western coal availability study, of the Hilight 7 1/2-minute quadrangle, indicates that approximately 60 percent (2.7 billion short tons) of the total 4.4 billion tons of coal in-place in the quadrangle is available for development. (There has been no commercial mining in the Hilight quadrangle.) Approximately 67 percent (1.9 billion tons) of the Main Wyodak coal bed is considered available. All tonnage measurements in this report are given in short tons.\r\n\r\n Coal-development considerations in the quadrangle include dwellings, railroads, pipelines, power lines, wildlife habitat (eagles), alluvial valley floors, cemeteries, and the Hilight oil and gas field and gas plant. Some of these considerations could be mitigated so that surface mining of the coal may proceed; others could not be mitigated and would preclude mining in their vicinity. Other technological constraints that influence the availability of the coal include overburden thickness, coal beds too thin, and areas of clinker.","language":"English","publisher":"U.S. Dept. of the Interior, U.S. Geological Survey,","publisherLocation":"Reston, VA","doi":"10.3133/ofr97469","issn":"0566-8174","usgsCitation":"Molnia, C.L., Biewick, L., Blake, D., Tewalt, S.J., Carter, M., and Gaskill, C., 1997, Coal availability in the Hilight Quadrangle, Powder River Basin, Wyoming; a prototype study in a western coal field: U.S. Geological Survey Open-File Report 97-469, 51 p., https://doi.org/10.3133/ofr97469.","productDescription":"51 p.","costCenters":[],"links":[{"id":1289,"rank":100,"type":{"id":15,"text":"Index Page"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1997/ofr-97-0469/","linkFileType":{"id":5,"text":"html"}},{"id":155335,"rank":0,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1997/0469/report-thumb.jpg"},{"id":51222,"rank":300,"type":{"id":11,"text":"Document"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1997/0469/report.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}}],"country":"United States","state":"Montana, Wyoming","otherGeospatial":"Powder River Basin","geographicExtents":"{\n \"type\": \"FeatureCollection\",\n \"features\": [\n {\n \"type\": \"Feature\",\n \"properties\": {},\n \"geometry\": {\n \"type\": \"Polygon\",\n \"coordinates\": [\n [\n [\n -107.38037109375,\n 42.73894375124377\n ],\n [\n -104.150390625,\n 42.73894375124377\n ],\n [\n -104.150390625,\n 47.12247581664114\n ],\n [\n -107.38037109375,\n 47.12247581664114\n ],\n [\n -107.38037109375,\n 42.73894375124377\n ]\n ]\n ]\n }\n }\n ]\n}","noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e49d6e4b07f02db5de06a","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Molnia, Carol L.","contributorId":62238,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Molnia","given":"Carol","email":"","middleInitial":"L.","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":185225,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1},{"text":"Biewick, Laura","contributorId":83148,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Biewick","given":"Laura","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":185227,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":2},{"text":"Blake, Dorsey","contributorId":91487,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Blake","given":"Dorsey","email":"","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":185229,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":3},{"text":"Tewalt, Susan J. stewalt@usgs.gov","contributorId":64270,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Tewalt","given":"Susan","email":"stewalt@usgs.gov","middleInitial":"J.","affiliations":[{"id":259,"text":"Energy Resources Science Center","active":false,"usgs":true}],"preferred":false,"id":185226,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":4},{"text":"Carter, M. These data, which can be useful for assessing Streambed scour and channel instability, are maintained in a computerized data base at the U.S. Geological Survey in Indianapolis, Indiana. The data elements are grouped under one of five headings: General Site Characteristics, Observed and Calculated Scour Characteristics, Bridge Characteristics, Stream Characteristics, and Debris Characteristics. The description of the data in each group includes the element name; examples of the data from bridge number 89-54 crossing Lick Creek in Wayne County, Indiana; and a brief description of each element. The data already have been used in Indiana to produce an observed-scour index and a potential-scour index and may be useful in other applications as well.
","language":"English","publisher":"U.S.
