The data base (Site Specific Water Use Data System) is updated annually or as more current water-use information becomes available. Information about amounts of water withdrawn, sources of water, how the water was used, and how much water was returned is available to those involved in establishing water-resource policy and to those managing water resources. In 1978, the USGS entered into a cooperative program with the Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources (WDNR) to inventory water use in Wisconsin. Since that time, three reports summarizing water use have been published (Lawrence and Ellefson, 1982; Ellefson and others, 1987; Ellefson and others, 1993). Ellefson and others (1993) present 1990 water-use data in a map and graph format. Because water use changes with time, an update report is periodically required. This report presents 1995 data in the same format as the 1993 report.
","language":"English","publisher":"U.S. Geological Survey","doi":"10.3133/ofr97356","collaboration":"Prepared in cooperation Water from about one-third of the wells had concentrations greater than 10 mg/L (milligrams per liter), the regulatory limit for drinking water established by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency. Nitrate concentrations: (1) were greater in water from wells in agricultural settings than in nonagricultural settings; (2) were not greater in water from shallow wells (25 feet deep or less) in settings with rapid soil permeability than with moderate soil permeability, probably because the effects of permeability were offset by the effects of land use and well depth; and (3) were greater in water from shallow wells (25 feet deep or less) than from deep wells (greater than 25 feet deep).
\n
Triazine herbicides were detected in water from 23 of the 73 sampled wells by immunoassay tests. Most of these wells are in agricultural settings. Ten pesticides, which included seven triazine herbicide compounds, were detected in water from 19 of 25 wells analyzed by gas chromatography/mass spectrometry. Atrazine and deethylatrazine, a degradation product of atrazine, were detected in water from 18 and 16 wells, respectively. None of the detected pesticides had concentrations that exceeded their respective regulatory limits for drinking water established by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency.
\n
Four lakes in the Otter Tail River Basin, which in downstream order are Little Pine, Big Pine, Rush, and Otter Tail Lakes, ranged in trophic state from upper oligotrophic to lower eutrophic. The Secchi disk transparencies were 4.0 to 7.4 feet, chlorophyll a concentrations (epilimnetic) were 4.4 to 28 micrograms per liter, and total phosphorus concentrations (epilimnetic) were less than 0.010 to 0.022 mg/L (except one concentration of 0.060 mg/L). The trophic state of these lakes may have become less eutrophic from upstream to downstream lakes.
\n
Major external sources of phosphorus to Big Pine Lake were the Otter Tail and Toad Rivers. The phosphorus load from these two streams during March 16, 1995, to March 15, 1996 was 10,400 pounds. The phosphorus load from the Toad River (5,730 pounds) was greater than from the Otter Tail River (4,670 pounds) even though streamflow from the Toad River was about 70 percent less than the Otter Tail River. Phosphorus removal from Big Pine Lake through the Otter Tail River outlet during the 1-year period was 8,460 pounds. The total annual accumulation of phosphorus, which includes an estimated 700 pounds from ground-water discharge, was 2,640 pounds. The accumulated phosphorus probably was utilized by phytoplankton or was absorbed by nonliving particulate matter that eventually settled into bottom sediments.
\n
Bottom sediments were an internal source of phosphorus to Little Pine and Big Pine Lakes. Increased total phosphorus concentrations (hypolimnetic) of 0.037 to 0.120 mg/L at depth during August 9-10, 1995, indicated phosphorus release from bottom sediments. The increased phosphorus probably was associated with anoxic conditions in the hypolimnion during summer stratification.
\n
Phosphorus at depth in Little Pine and Big Pine Lakes was mostly orthophosphate. During the fall turnover of the lakes, this orthophosphate may have circulated to near the lake surface and became an available nutrient for phytoplankton during the following growing season. The internal phosphorus load to Little Pine Lake may have been important because about three-fourths of the lake probably became stratified and anoxic in the hypolimnion. The internal phosphorus load to Big Pine Lake may not have been important because only a small portion of the lake became stratified and anoxic at depth.
","language":"English","publisher":"U.S. Geological Survey","publisherLocation":"Mounds View, MN","doi":"10.3133/wri974085","collaboration":"Prepared in cooperation with the East Otter Tail Soil and Water Conservation District and the Minnesota Department of Natural Resources","usgsCitation":"Ruhl, J.F., 1997, Nitrate and pesticides in surficial aquifers and trophic state and phosphorus sources for selected lakes, eastern Otter Tail County, west-central Minnesota, 1993-96: U.S. Geological Survey Water-Resources Investigations Report 97-4085, vi, 43 p., https://doi.org/10.3133/wri974085.","productDescription":"vi, 43 p.","onlineOnly":"N","additionalOnlineFiles":"N","costCenters":[{"id":392,"text":"Minnesota Water Science Center","active":true,"usgs":true}],"links":[{"id":58294,"rank":300,"type":{"id":11,"text":"Document"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/wri/1997/4085/report.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":119520,"rank":0,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/wri/1997/4085/report-thumb.jpg"}],"country":"United States","state":"Minnesota","geographicExtents":"{\n \"type\": \"FeatureCollection\",\n \"features\": [\n {\n \"type\": \"Feature\",\n \"properties\": {},\n \"geometry\": {\n \"type\": \"Polygon\",\n \"coordinates\": [\n [\n [\n -96,\n 46.75\n ],\n [\n -96,\n 46.1\n ],\n [\n -95.125,\n 46.1\n ],\n [\n -95.125,\n 46.75\n ],\n [\n -96,\n 46.75\n ]\n ]\n ]\n }\n }\n ]\n}","noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e4afee4b07f02db6973ac","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Ruhl, J. The Massachusetts Highway Department entered into a cooperative effort with the U.S. Geological Survey to comply with this mandate. Geomorphic and hydraulic characteristics were collected and were used to assess the processes that affect stream stability and current scour problems and potential near 2,361 bridge sites in Massachusetts. As a result of these assessments, the Massachusetts Highway Department will prioritize the bridge inventory for action regarding scour safety. A data base was prepared that includes the geomorphic and hydraulic data collected during field assessments. In addition to the data base, this report includes the historical development of the bridge scour program, the methods used for data collection during assessments, the methods used for quality assurance and quality control, and how the data base was digitally formatted to be presented on a CD-ROM. The objective of this work was to utilize more than 25,000 km of publicly available multichannel seismic-reflection profiles (Sheridan et al., 1988) in order to assign acoustic properties to the continental margin postrift sediments in an internally consistent, geologically meaningful, regionally extensive, digital form. The acoustic properties of interest include thickness, depth, compressional- and shear-wave velocity, compressional- and shear-wave attenuation, density, and lithology. This data base subdivides the 0- to 14-km thick Jurassic and younger postrift deposits into 18 mappable horizons. The spatial scale of gridding is 5' latitude by 5 ' longitude, or about 9x8 km.

This report describes the second part of developing the data base for the continental margin between Florida and Cape Hatteras: spatial gridding of the digital stratigraphic and velocity data, derivative calculations of density, shear-wave velocity, and attenuation, and construction of the final data base. This report describes the areal extent, thickness, water-bearing characteristics, water-supply potential, and water-quality characteristics of confined aquifers within buriedvalley deposits in Rock County.
\n
Hydrogeologic units present within buried-valley deposits in Rock County include unconfined and confined drift aquifers, undifferentiated Cretaceous aquifers, the Split Rock Creek aquifer, and interbedded confining units. The undifferentiated Cretaceous aquifers consist of sandstone layers within interbedded claystone and siltstone overlying the Split Rock Creek Formation or Sioux Quartzite. The Split Rock Creek Formation consisting of sand units (comprising the Split Rock Creek aquifer) and interbedded layers of siltstone and claystone, is present in buried valleys incised in the Sioux Quartzite surface in southern and possibly northeastern Rock County, Minnesota.
\n
Confined drift aquifers with thicknesses greater than 5 feet were penetrated in 6 of 10 test holes. Thicknesses of the confined drift aquifers in Rock County range from at least 2 to greater than 32 feet. Estimated horizontal hydraulic conductivity for a confined drift aquifer derived from specific-capacity information from one domestic well log was 73 feet per day.
\n
No major (thickness greater than 5 feet) undifferentiated Cretaceous aquifers were penetrated in 10 test holes. Thicknesses of the undifferentiated Cretaceous aquifers compiled from the geologic logs for four domestic wells ranged from at least 7 feet to greater than 46 feet. Estimated horizontal hydraulic conductivity for an undifferentiated Cretaceous aquifer derived from specific-capacity information from one domestic well log was 55 feet per day.
\n
Cumulative sand thicknesses for the Split Rock Creek aquifer in 10 test holes ranged from zero to 128.5 feet in 2 to 6 layers. The largest cumulative sand thicknesses were penetrated near the southern margin of the Sioux Quartzite high in northern Rock County and in an east-west trending buried valley (Brandon Embayment) entering Rock County from Minnehaha County, South Dakota. These comparatively large cumulative sand thicknesses are probably due to a high-energy depositional environment.
\n
Estimated horizontal hydraulic conductivities for the Split Rock Creek aquifer in Rock County derived from analysis of three slug tests were 0.1, 0.2, and 1 foot per day. The corresponding aquifer transmissivities, calculated as the horizontal hydraulic conductivity multiplied by the cumulative sand thickness, were 3, 16, and 130 feet squared per day. The greatest horizontal hydraulic conductivity and transmissivity estimates were for a site near the southern margin of the Sioux Quartzite high. The watersupply potential of the Split Rock Creek aquifer in Rock County is generally limited by the low transmissivity of the aquifer due to the fineness of the aquifer material (generally very fine- to fine-grained sand).
\n
Recharge to the Split Rock Creek aquifer is thought to be derived primarily from hydraulic connection to the Sioux Quartzite aquifer as infiltration of precipitation moves through the fractures and joints of the Sioux Quartzite to the Split Rock Creek aquifer. The regional directions of flow in the aquifer are to the south away from the Sioux Quartzite high and to the west in the Brandon Embayment in Minnehaha County and its east-west trending extension into Rock County.
\n
The predominant ions in water from two wells screened in confined drift aquifers in Rock County were calcium and bicarbonate and in water from a third well were calcium and sulfate. The predominant ions in water from one well screened in an undifferentiated Cretaceous aquifer in Rock County were calcium and bicarbonate and in water from a second well were calcium and sulfate. The predominant ions in water from two wells screened in the Split Rock Creek aquifer in Rock County were calcium and bicarbonate and in water from a third well were calcium and sulfate.
","language":"English","publisher":"U.S. Geological Survey","publisherLocation":"Mounds View, MN","doi":"10.3133/wri974029","collaboration":"Prepared in cooperation with the Minnesota Department of Natural Resources","usgsCitation":"Lindgren, R.J., 1997, Hydrogeology and ground-water quality of confined aquifers in buried valleys in Rock County, Minnesota and Minnehaha County, South Dakota: U.S. Geological Survey Water-Resources Investigations Report 97-4029, iv, 30 p., https://doi.org/10.3133/wri974029.","productDescription":"iv, 30 p.","onlineOnly":"N","additionalOnlineFiles":"N","costCenters":[{"id":392,"text":"Minnesota Water Science Center","active":true,"usgs":true}],"links":[{"id":57179,"rank":300,"type":{"id":11,"text":"Document"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/wri/1997/4029/report.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":119032,"rank":0,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/wri/1997/4029/report-thumb.jpg"}],"country":"United States","state":"Minnesota, South Dakota","county":"Minnehaha County, Rock County","geographicExtents":"{\"type\":\"FeatureCollection\",\"features\":[{\"type\":\"Feature\",\"geometry\":{\"type\":\"Polygon\",\"coordinates\":[[[-96.053,43.8525],[-96.0526,43.5028],[-96.0841,43.5027],[-96.4541,43.5026],[-96.5974,43.5021],[-96.6133,43.5014],[-96.9235,43.5002],[-97.1293,43.5002],[-97.1286,43.8496],[-96.8899,43.8501],[-96.77,43.8486],[-96.6463,43.8482],[-96.5307,43.848],[-96.454,43.8502],[-96.4532,43.8502],[-96.4532,43.8515],[-96.0657,43.8527],[-96.053,43.8525]]]},\"properties\":{\"name\":\"Rock\",\"state\":\"MN\"}}]}","noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e4a4be4b07f02db625664","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Lindgren, R. Resource-management agencies are concerned that increased sedimentation and loss of streamside cover associated with accelerated erosion rates caused by boat activity may threaten salmon returns to the river. Bank loss and boat activity were characterized during 1996 along 67 miles of the Kenai River, including a segment of the river several miles long where boat activity is restricted to non-motorized uses. Bank loss in the non-motorized segment of the river was about 75 percent less than that observed in the highest boat-use area of the river and 33 per cent less than that observed in the lowest boat-use area of the river. Dates of peak boat activity coincided closely with chinook salmon returns to the Kenai River and with peaks in measured bank erosion. The boat activity period began in late May, peaked on weekend days in mid-July, and declined in early August. Observed boat traffic on the Kenai River included boats from 10 to 26 feet in length that transported 1 to 8 passengers. The most commonly observed boats were between 16 and 20 feet long and carried 4 or 5 passengers. The number of boats operated by commercial fishing guides represented 40 percent of the boats counted by the Alaska Department of Natural Resources, 55 percent of the boats counted by the Alaska Department of Fish and Game, and 57 percent of those recorded by observers during this study. The maximum boat activity and the maximum bank loss were measured at the RW's Campground study site about 16 river miles upstream from the mouth of the Kenai River. Between July 12 and September 10, 1996, more than 20,100 boats traveled by this site and the streambank along the inside of the meander bend was undercut to a depth of 45 inches at one measuring point. Boat activity and bank loss were greatest in areas of the river between about river miles 9 and 18 and river miles 39 and 46. These two segments of the river are popular residential and fishing areas and have banks composed of non-cohesive soils. In addition, a meandering, un-armored channel makes the banks along these two segments susceptible to erosion. Triplicate groups of 20 early juveniles (mean 0.4 g) were stocked in 1000 litre fiberglass tanks supplied with filtered estuarine water (17–26 °C, mean 22 °C; 15–35‰) and hand fed twice a day to apparent satiation for 56 days. The fish (range 0.3–9.4 g) appeared to utilize up to 1.5–5.2% dietary SBO (in 5.4–8.7% total lipid). With 0.67% EPA + DHA (eicosapentaenoic and docosahexaenoic acids) in the basal diet, no EFA-deficiency signs were observed. Dietary MHO was utilized up to 12.7%, but fish fed diets with more than 1.5% SBO had lower growth rates and increased feed conversion ratios (especially with 9.0 and 12.7% SBO). Diets containing 1.5% SBO or MHO produced the leanest fish (70.5–71.6% protein, 13.0–13.1% lipid, of whole body). Diets containing 9.0 and 12.7% MHO produced the fattest fish (64.5–66.0% protein and 19.1–19.9% lipid).

Percent liver lipid (wet) was highest for fish fed diets containing 5.2% SBO (41.4%), 9.0% MHO (36.5%), and 12.7% MHO (35.4%), and lowest with 1.5% MHO (24.0%). Considering the good survival, absence of disease, and excellent general health, this fatty liver condition did not appear to have short-term adverse effects. All fish in the study had fatty livers to some degree, and their liver histological features differed from those of wild fish. Liver lipid reserves might confer some survival advantage to fish released for stock enhancement if the reserves are used during their transition from cultured to wild status. However, if the hepatocyte changes we observed are not reversible, long-term detrimental effects on liver function are possible.
","language":"English","publisher":"Elsevier","doi":"10.1016/S0044-8486(96)01448-2","usgsCitation":"Tucker, J.W., Lellis, W.A., Vermeer, G.K., Roberts, D.E., and Woodward, P.N., 1997, The effects of experimental starter diets with different levels of soybean or menhaden oil on red drum (Sciaenops ocellatus): Aquaculture, v. 149, no. 3-4, p. 323-339, https://doi.org/10.1016/S0044-8486(96)01448-2.","productDescription":"17 p.","startPage":"323","endPage":"339","numberOfPages":"17","costCenters":[{"id":365,"text":"Leetown Science Center","active":true,"usgs":true}],"links":[{"id":131991,"rank":1,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/thumbnails/outside_thumb.jpg"}],"volume":"149","issue":"3-4","noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e4a9be4b07f02db65e02d","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Tucker, J. San Francisco Bay receives many waste water discharges, especially in areas south of the Dumbarton Bridge, that contain trace elements that accumulate in benthic organisms (Luoma et al., 1985; Brown and Luoma, 1995). Trace elements tend to adsorb particulate matter (Kuwabara et al., 1989), so the fate of trace elements is partly determined by the fate of suspended solids. Concentrations of dissolved trace elements are greater in the South Bay than elsewhere in San Francisco Bay, and bottom sediments are believed to be a significant source (Flegal et al., 1991). The concentration of suspended particulate chromium in the Bay appears to be controlled primarily by sediment re-suspension (Abu-Saba and Flegal, 1995). Water quality standards for trace elements in the Bay are written in terms of total or near-total trace element concentrations (TEC).
\n
This summary has two objectives. The first is to demonstrate the relationship between suspended solids concentration (SSC) and TEC by developing equations relating SSC to total (or near-total) concentrations of trace elements based on Regional Monitoring Program (RMP) data collected during 1993 and 1994. The second objective is to demonstrate the temporal variability of TEC that are linearly correlated (LCTEC) with SSC by presenting time-series information on LCTEC based on nearly continuous SSC measurements collected during the 1995 water year (October 1, 1994 to September 30, 1995) and the SSC-LCTEC equations.
","largerWorkType":{"id":18,"text":"Report"},"largerWorkTitle":"1995 Annual report, San Francisco Estuary Regional Monitoring Program for Trace Substances","largerWorkSubtype":{"id":9,"text":"Other Report"},"language":"English","publisher":"San Francisco Estuary Institute","publisherLocation":"Richmond, CA","usgsCitation":"Schoellhamer, D., 1997, Time series of trace element concentrations calculated from time series of suspended solids concentrations and RMP water samples: Summary and conclusions: Annual Report, 3 p.","productDescription":"3 p.","startPage":"53","endPage":"55","onlineOnly":"N","additionalOnlineFiles":"N","costCenters":[{"id":552,"text":"San Francisco Bay-Delta","active":false,"usgs":true},{"id":5079,"text":"Pacific Regional Director's Office","active":true,"usgs":true}],"links":[{"id":324887,"rank":1,"type":{"id":15,"text":"Index Page"},"url":"https://www.sfei.org/documents/1995-annual-report-san-francisco-estuary-regional-monitoring-program-trace-substances"},{"id":324888,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/thumbnails/outside_thumb.jpg"}],"country":"United States","state":"California","otherGeospatial":"San Francisco Bay","geographicExtents":"{\n  \"type\": \"FeatureCollection\",\n  \"features\": [\n    {\n      \"type\": \"Feature\",\n      \"properties\": {},\n      \"geometry\": {\n        \"type\": \"Polygon\",\n        \"coordinates\": [\n          [\n            [\n              -122.53326416015624,\n              37.42470717168675\n            ],\n            [\n              -122.53326416015624,\n              38.229550455326134\n            ],\n            [\n              -121.86035156249999,\n              38.229550455326134\n            ],\n            [\n              -121.86035156249999,\n              37.42470717168675\n            ],\n            [\n              -122.53326416015624,\n              37.42470717168675\n            ]\n          ]\n        ]\n      }\n    }\n  ]\n}","noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"5780cec0e4b08116168223df","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Schoellhamer, David H. 0000-0001-9488-7340 dschoell@usgs.gov","orcid":"https://orcid.org/0000-0001-9488-7340","contributorId":631,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Schoellhamer","given":"David H.","email":"dschoell@usgs.gov","affiliations":[{"id":154,"text":"California Water Science Center","active":true,"usgs":true}],"preferred":true,"id":641890,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1}]}}

The study was initiated at the request of the Bureau of Land Management (BLM), through a request to the former National Biological Service. The Southeastern New Mexico Playa Lakes Coordinating Committee (SENMPLCC) played an important role in outlining the research needs. The initial Study Plan document, which outlines the background, objectives and methods for the first two years is available as Appendix 1. A letter indicating modifications to the Study Plan was sent to the SENMPLCC chair on April 25,1995, and is Appendix 2. An Interim Report, covering this work was completed and submitted in September 1995. The Literature Review section of the study was completed and presented to SENMPLCC in August, 1995. Following SENMPLCC review, NWHC was asked to develop a series of questions that could be posed from information gained in the initial phase (Appendix 3). This report on pollen and geochronological evidence from cores collected along Taylor Creek is the first of a series documenting the biotic history of a series of sites in southern Florida. \r\nPollen and geochronology were analyzed from two cores collected at site 2 along Taylor Creek, one short core (35 cm long) to provide high-resolution data and one long core (98 cm long) to provide a record of the last few millenia. Analysis of pollen assemblages from these cores indicate that marsh and slough vegetation, primarily sawgrass with some incursions by cattails, dominated the area for most of the last two millenia, until about 1950-1960. At that point, sawgrass pollen declined to lower abundances than recorded elsewhere in the core, and tree pollen became much more abundant in the cores. This change reflects the vegetational response to alterations in the hydrologic system throughout much of the last century.","language":"English","publisher":"U.S. Geological Survey","publisherLocation":"Reston, VA","doi":"10.3133/ofr9735","issn":"0094-9140","usgsCitation":"Willard, D., and Holmes, C.W., 1997, Pollen and geochronological data from South Florida; Taylor Creek Site 2: U.S. Geological Survey Open-File Report 97-35, 29 p., https://doi.org/10.3133/ofr9735.","productDescription":"29 p.","costCenters":[{"id":27821,"text":"Caribbean-Florida Water Science Center","active":true,"usgs":true}],"links":[{"id":157140,"rank":0,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1997/0035/report-thumb.jpg"},{"id":53847,"rank":299,"type":{"id":11,"text":"Document"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1997/0035/ofr9735.pdf","text":"Report","size":"1.60 MB","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"},"description":"OFR 97-35"}],"country":"United States","state":"Florida","otherGeospatial":"Taylor Creek Site 2","geographicExtents":"{\n \"type\": \"FeatureCollection\",\n \"features\": [\n {\n \"type\": \"Feature\",\n \"properties\": {},\n \"geometry\": {\n \"type\": \"Polygon\",\n \"coordinates\": [\n [\n [\n -80.70693969726562,\n 25.19251511519153\n ],\n [\n -80.52703857421875,\n 25.19251511519153\n ],\n [\n -80.52703857421875,\n 25.30678678767568\n ],\n [\n -80.70693969726562,\n 25.30678678767568\n ],\n [\n -80.70693969726562,\n 25.19251511519153\n ]\n ]\n ]\n }\n }\n ]\n}","contact":"
Caribbean-Florida Water Science Center
U.S. Geological Survey
3321 College Avenue
Davie, FL 33314

Contact Pubs Warehouse
","noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e4ad7e4b07f02db6845f8","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Willard, Debra A. 0000-0003-4878-0942","orcid":"https://orcid.org/0000-0003-4878-0942","contributorId":85982,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Willard","given":"Debra A.","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":192682,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1},{"text":"Holmes, C. The benthic foraminifera and molluscs indicate fluctuating salinities with increasing average salinity upcore in core 19B. Shifts from low salinity (12-15 ppt) to higher average salinity (30 ppt) occurred at 70-66 cm and 24-18 cm in core 19B (approximately 1937-1940 and 1975-1980). The inverse, shifts from periods of higher average salinity to periods of lower salinity, occurred at 140 cm, 90 cm, and 42 cm (approximately 1880, 1921, and 1960). Significant changes in the molluscan fauna indicative of specific substrate types occur at 88 cm, 68 cm, and 22 cm. The lower portion of the core is dominated by a mixture of sediment and grass dwellers, the middle portion by sediment dwellers, and the upper portion of the core by grass and finally grass and algae dwellers. Changes occur in the floral assemblages in core 19A, but the significance of these changes is unclear. Three subtle shifts occur in the pollen assemblages indicating the onshore vegetation was responding to some environmental factor. Two peaks in dinocyst abundance occur in core 19A, but the composition of dinocyst assemblages remains relatively stable throughout the core. Correspondence between changes in salinity and onshore vegetation changes is consistent with results from previous cores. The pattern of increased salinity upcore is consistent with patterns seen in core T24 from the mouth of Taylor Creek and in core 6A from Bob Allen mudbank.","language":"English","publisher":"U.S. Geological Survey","doi":"10.3133/ofr97460","issn":"0094-9140","usgsCitation":"Brewster-Wingard, G., Ishman, S., Willard, D., Edwards, L.E., and Holmes, C.W., 1997, Preliminary paleontologic report on cores 19A and 19B, from Russell Bank, Everglades National Park, Florida Bay: U.S. Geological Survey Open-File Report 97-460, i, 29 p., https://doi.org/10.3133/ofr97460.","productDescription":"i, 29 p.","costCenters":[{"id":156,"text":"Caribbean Water Science Center","active":true,"usgs":true}],"links":[{"id":51506,"rank":299,"type":{"id":11,"text":"Document"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1997/0460/ofr97460.pdf","text":"Report","size":"885 KB","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"},"description":"OFR 97-460"},{"id":153339,"rank":0,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1997/0460/report-thumb.jpg"}],"country":"United States","state":"Florida","otherGeospatial":"Everglades National Park","geographicExtents":"{\n \"type\": \"FeatureCollection\",\n \"features\": [\n {\n \"type\": \"Feature\",\n \"properties\": {},\n \"geometry\": {\n \"type\": \"Polygon\",\n \"coordinates\": [\n [\n [\n -81.48834228515625,\n 25.100523057465217\n ],\n [\n -80.518798828125,\n 25.100523057465217\n ],\n [\n -80.518798828125,\n 25.841921351954845\n ],\n [\n -81.48834228515625,\n 25.841921351954845\n ],\n [\n -81.48834228515625,\n 25.100523057465217\n ]\n ]\n ]\n }\n }\n ]\n}","contact":"
Caribbean-Florida Water Science Center
U.S. Geological Survey
3321 College Avenue
Davie, FL 33314

Contact Pubs Warehouse
","noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e4aafe4b07f02db66cd60","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Brewster-Wingard, G.
