Co-financed by USAID and the U.S. Geological Survey's EROS Data Center (EDC), and implemented by EDC and the Centre de Suivi Ecologique (CSE), this project has carried out extensive monitoring of natural resources and land use patterns in Senegal in order to better understand the complex dynamics of change in semi-arid tropics. The monitoring, as carried out by EROS staff and their Senegalese collaborators, has involved use of information collected by remote sensing (satellite and aerial photographs) as well as extensive field work including the collection of physical information about soils, vegetation, land use practices, and biodiversity at 2 over 600 sites in all parts of the country (Tappan and Wood, 1995). This information provides a remarkable record of changes in physical and land cover parameters over the last 30 years. We instrumented female pintails at Catahoula Lake, Louisiana, in October of 1992-94 and located the instrumented birds weekly through the following March. Using the SDSS developed in an ARC/INFO geographical information system (GIS) - environment. We were able to visualize movements of instrumented pintails over varied environmental conditions and landscape features to determine habitat use. Weather data were used to determine factors important in the timing of movements. The analyses indicated that female pintails dispersed from Catahoula Lake, Louisiana, in three general patterns, based upon wetland conditions. Timing of movements coincided with periods of precipitation or disturbance, primarily hunting. Pintails which arrived at Catahoula Lake in October and November remained in the agricultural areas of Louisiana and Arkansas, with very limited movements to the coastal marshes or westward into the agricultural areas of Texas. Northward movements into Arkansas occurred whenever there was substantial rainfall in the agricultural regions, and northward movements generally stopped at the frost-line. No differences in adult or juvenile female movement patterns were apparent.</p>","largerWorkType":{"id":4,"text":"Book"},"largerWorkTitle":"Effect of habitat loss and change on waterbirds","largerWorkSubtype":{"id":12,"text":"Conference publication"},"conferenceTitle":"10th International Waterfowl Ecology Symposium","conferenceDate":"September 18-21, 1995","conferenceLocation":"Portugal","language":"English","publisher":"The Stationery Office","usgsCitation":"Jeske, C.W., Ji, W., Chadwick, P.C., Norling, W., and Finley, M., 1997, Use of a spatial decision support system for analysis of habitat use by wintering northern pintails, <i>in</i> Effect of habitat loss and change on waterbirds, Portugal, September 18-21, 1995, p. 83-85.","productDescription":"3 p.","startPage":"83","endPage":"85","costCenters":[{"id":455,"text":"National Wetlands Research Center","active":true,"usgs":true},{"id":17705,"text":"Wetland and Aquatic Research Center","active":true,"usgs":true}],"links":[{"id":369749,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/thumbnails/outside_thumb.jpg"},{"id":369748,"rank":1,"type":{"id":15,"text":"Index Page"},"url":"https://nora.nerc.ac.uk/id/eprint/4132/"}],"country":"United States","state":"Louisiana","otherGeospatial":"Catahoula Lake","geographicExtents":"{\n  \"type\": \"FeatureCollection\",\n  \"features\": [\n    {\n      \"type\": \"Feature\",\n      \"properties\": {},\n      \"geometry\": {\n        \"type\": \"Polygon\",\n        \"coordinates\": [\n          [\n            [\n              -92.21992492675781,\n              31.43510788139414\n            ],\n            [\n              -92.03590393066406,\n              31.43510788139414\n            ],\n            [\n              -92.03590393066406,\n              31.573855555238104\n            ],\n            [\n              -92.21992492675781,\n              31.573855555238104\n            ],\n            [\n              -92.21992492675781,\n              31.43510788139414\n            ]\n          ]\n        ]\n      }\n    }\n  ]\n}","noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Jeske, Clinton W. jeskec@usgs.gov","contributorId":2982,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Jeske","given":"Clinton","email":"jeskec@usgs.gov","middleInitial":"W.","affiliations":[],"preferred":true,"id":776264,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1},{"text":"Ji, W.","contributorId":40381,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Ji","given":"W.","email":"","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":776265,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":2},{"text":"Chadwick, Paul C.","contributorId":34791,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Chadwick","given":"Paul","email":"","middleInitial":"C.","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":776266,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":3},{"text":"Norling, W.","contributorId":76684,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Norling","given":"W.","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":776267,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":4},{"text":"Finley, M. Mangrove ecosystems are especially vulnerable because they thrive in the intertidal zone of tropical regions where hurricanes originate and are most frequent. Because mangroves are found at the land-sea interface where hurricanes are often most intense, these coastal forests are subject to damage from both high wind and surge. Mangroves are also an important habitat for many colonial and migratory birds and other wildlife, along with being nursery grounds for our fisheries. The fate of mangrove habitat as influenced by hurricanes may be threatened in the future under a global warming environment that might yield more intense storms than have been previously observed. Simulation models of hurricane abiotics and mangrove community dynamics have been developed to evaluate the effects of hurricanes on mangrove habitat across the South Florida landscape. Model applications show that hurricane frequency and intensity have varied spatially across Florida’s lower peninsula over the last century of record. Hindcast simulations of actual hurricane tracks and conditions seem to account for the structural composition of modernday mangrove forests across South Florida. A recurrence interval of major storms every 30 years over the last century is the major factor controlling mangrove ecosystem dynamics in South Florida. Some climate change models predict an increase in hurricane intensity over the next century that may further alter the structure and composition of our mangrove ecosystems. Model results of climate change scenarios indicate that future mangrove forests are likely to be diminished in stature and perhaps include a higher proportion of red mangroves. This modeling approach offers the ability to assess decadal and longer time scale changes in hurricane behavior and its effects on community structure and distribution of important plant associations such as the fate of mangrove habitat.</span></p>","largerWorkType":{"id":4,"text":"Book"},"largerWorkTitle":"Hurricanes: Climate and socioeconomic impacts","largerWorkSubtype":{"id":15,"text":"Monograph"},"language":"English","publisher":"Springer","doi":"10.1007/978-3-642-60672-4_6","isbn":"9783540620785","usgsCitation":"Doyle, T.W., and Girod, G.F., 1997, The frequency and intensity of Atlantic hurricanes and their influence on the structure of south Florida mangrove communities, chap. <i>of</i> Hurricanes: Climate and socioeconomic impacts, p. 109-120, https://doi.org/10.1007/978-3-642-60672-4_6.","productDescription":"12 p.","startPage":"109","endPage":"120","costCenters":[{"id":455,"text":"National Wetlands Research Center","active":true,"usgs":true},{"id":17705,"text":"Wetland and Aquatic Research Center","active":true,"usgs":true}],"links":[{"id":371312,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/thumbnails/outside_thumb.jpg"}],"country":"United States","state":"Florida","geographicExtents":"{\n  \"type\": \"FeatureCollection\",\n  \"features\": [\n    {\n      \"type\": \"Feature\",\n      \"properties\": {},\n      \"geometry\": {\n        \"type\": \"Polygon\",\n        \"coordinates\": [\n          [\n            [\n              -80.277099609375,\n              25.60685599371504\n            ],\n            [\n              -80.474853515625,\n              25.512700007620513\n            ],\n            [\n              -80.738525390625,\n              25.473033261279515\n            ],\n            [\n              -81.2933349609375,\n              26.09625490696853\n            ],\n            [\n              -81.8646240234375,\n              26.809363588053785\n            ],\n            [\n              -82.188720703125,\n              26.676913083105454\n            ],\n            [\n              -82.2216796875,\n              26.48532391504829\n            ],\n            [\n              -81.9525146484375,\n              26.327883665584135\n            ],\n            [\n              -81.84814453125,\n              25.794945475649673\n            ],\n            [\n              -81.3812255859375,\n              25.671235828577043\n            ],\n            [\n              -81.19445800781249,\n              25.055745117015316\n            ],\n            [\n              -81.6943359375,\n              24.756808311192707\n            ],\n            [\n              -82.0184326171875,\n              24.637031353509528\n            ],\n            [\n              -81.771240234375,\n              24.41714202537204\n            ],\n            [\n              -80.5462646484375,\n              24.84656534821976\n            ],\n            [\n              -80.068359375,\n              25.517657429994035\n            ],\n            [\n              -80.277099609375,\n              25.60685599371504\n            ]\n          ]\n        ]\n      }\n    }\n  ]\n}","noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Doyle, Thomas W. 0000-0001-5754-0671 doylet@usgs.gov","orcid":"https://orcid.org/0000-0001-5754-0671","contributorId":703,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Doyle","given":"Thomas","email":"doylet@usgs.gov","middleInitial":"W.","affiliations":[{"id":455,"text":"National Wetlands Research Center","active":true,"usgs":true}],"preferred":true,"id":779606,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1},{"text":"Girod, Garrett F.","contributorId":211561,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Girod","given":"Garrett","email":"","middleInitial":"F.","affiliations":[{"id":455,"text":"National Wetlands Research Center","active":true,"usgs":true}],"preferred":true,"id":779607,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":2}]}}

We investigated the distribution and sources of solutes, particularly Sr, in pore water mechanically extracted from clay-silt core samples collected from depths of 552–840 ft (168–256 m) in the lower Miocene Kirkwood Formation at Atlantic City, New Jersey (Ocean Drilling Program Leg 150X). The sampled sediments consist of thin clay-silt stringers in the upper part of the Atlantic City 800-ft sand, a major aquifer, and the massive clay-silt units above and below it. The distribution of Sr and the ratio of <sup>87</sup>Sr to <sup>86</sup>Sr in the pore water and adjacent shell material were used to identify the possible sources of, and physical processes that may affect the distribution of, Sr in the pore water. Concentrations of Sr in 14 pore-water samples from the clay-silt unit above the aquifer and the clay-silt interbeds in the upper part of the aquifer ranged from 2.74 to 28.19 µM/L; those in the four pore-water samples from the clay-silt unit below the aquifer ranged from 0.52 to 7.30 µM/L. Concentrations of Sr in the samples varied with depth but correlated strongly with pore-water concentrations of Ca, Mg, Na, and SO4. Cation-exchange processes may be responsible, in part, for the lower concentrations of Sr, Ca, and Mg in pore water from the clay-silt unit below the aquifer than in that above the aquifer. <sup>87</sup>Sr/<sup>86</sup>Sr values in 11 samples of aragonitic mollusk shells (bearing no visible evidence of recrystallization) collected from depths in the clay-silt unit similar to those from which the pore-water samples were collected ranged from 0.708468 to 0.708713 , and decreased (Sr in the shells was less radiogenic) with depth. This trend is consistent with the decrease in the <sup>87</sup>Sr/<sup>86</sup>Sr value in seawater through time during the early Miocene. The <sup>87</sup>Sr/<sup>86</sup>Sr values in 12 pore-water samples from the studied stratigraphic interval ranged from 0.708257 to 0.708527 and also decreased with depth. The Sr-isotope ratios in the pore water were lower than those in the shell material from nearby or adjacent sediments for all samples but one. Because the only known source of Sr with an isotope ratio this low is shell material from sediments deeper than the strata from which the pore-water samples were collected (including pre-Miocene stratigraphic units), the isotope ratio in the pore-water samples from the lower Miocene claysilt units may result from upward movement of pore water into lower Miocene strata through geologic time, which could create the observed difference in Sr isotope ratios between the pore water and shells.</p>","largerWorkType":{"id":4,"text":"Book"},"largerWorkTitle":"Proceedings of the Ocean Drilling Program; scientific results; New Jersey coastal plain; covering onshore boreholes as part of the New Jersey sea-level transect, Island Beach and Atlantic City sites, March-August 1993, Cape May site, March-April 1994","largerWorkSubtype":{"id":12,"text":"Conference publication"},"language":"English","publisher":"Texas A&M University","doi":"10.2973/odp.proc.sr.150X.322.1997","usgsCitation":"Szabo, Z., Pucci, A.A., and Feigenson, M.D., 1997, Sr-isotopic evidence for leakage of pore water from clay-silt confining units to the Atlantic City 800-foot sand, Atlantic City, New Jersey, <i>in</i> Proceedings of the Ocean Drilling Program; scientific results; New Jersey coastal plain; covering onshore boreholes as part of the New Jersey sea-level transect, Island Beach and Atlantic City sites, March-August 1993, Cape May site, March-April 1994, v. 150X, p. 343-354, https://doi.org/10.2973/odp.proc.sr.150X.322.1997.","productDescription":"12 p.","startPage":"343","endPage":"354","costCenters":[{"id":470,"text":"New Jersey Water Science Center","active":true,"usgs":true}],"links":[{"id":488829,"rank":0,"type":{"id":40,"text":"Open Access Publisher Index Page"},"url":"http://doi.org/10.2973/odp.proc.sr.150x.322.1997","text":"Publisher Index Page"},{"id":368451,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/thumbnails/outside_thumb.jpg"}],"country":"United States","state":"New Jersey","geographicExtents":"{\n  \"type\": \"FeatureCollection\",\n  \"features\": [\n    {\n      \"type\": \"Feature\",\n      \"properties\": {},\n      \"geometry\": {\n        \"type\": \"Polygon\",\n        \"coordinates\": [\n          [\n            [\n              -74.28955078125,\n              40.53258931069554\n            ],\n            [\n              -74.41314697265625,\n              40.53050177574321\n            ],\n            [\n              -74.8004150390625,\n              40.18516846826054\n            ],\n            [\n              -75.07507324218749,\n              39.97922477476731\n            ],\n            [\n              -75.14923095703125,\n              39.8992015115692\n            ],\n            [\n              -75.223388671875,\n              39.857046423130654\n            ],\n            [\n              -75.399169921875,\n              39.838068180000015\n            ],\n            [\n              -75.56396484375,\n              39.65011210186371\n            ],\n            [\n              -75.5474853515625,\n              39.480725519034394\n            ],\n            [\n              -75.15472412109375,\n              39.20033381963202\n            ],\n            [\n              -74.97344970703124,\n              39.18117526158749\n            ],\n            [\n              -74.893798828125,\n              39.16839998800286\n            ],\n            [\n              -74.970703125,\n              38.9380483825641\n            ],\n            [\n              -74.8828125,\n              38.90813299596705\n            ],\n            [\n              -74.35546875,\n              39.41497702499074\n            ],\n            [\n              -74.05334472656249,\n              39.787433886224406\n            ],\n            [\n              -73.948974609375,\n              40.44276659332215\n            ],\n            [\n              -74.014892578125,\n              40.49709237269567\n            ],\n            [\n              -74.278564453125,\n              40.48038142908172\n            ],\n            [\n              -74.28955078125,\n              40.53258931069554\n            ]\n          ]\n        ]\n      }\n    }\n  ]\n}","volume":"150X","noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Szabo, Zoltan 0000-0002-0760-9607 zszabo@usgs.gov","orcid":"https://orcid.org/0000-0002-0760-9607","contributorId":138827,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Szabo","given":"Zoltan","email":"zszabo@usgs.gov","affiliations":[{"id":470,"text":"New Jersey Water Science Center","active":true,"usgs":true}],"preferred":true,"id":773510,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1},{"text":"Pucci, A. Most debris flows occur in the summer during localized convective thunderstorms with rainfall intensities as high as 40 mm/hr. Rarer and larger debris flows occur during unusually warm frontal storms in winter. Hourly precipitation data suggest that storms that cause debris flows terminate with a period of intense rainfall, a characteristic that complicates the use of daily rainfall records in assessing debris-flow hazard. Recurrence intervals for 1-day rainfall associated with 37 recent debris flows range from &lt;1 to &gt;50 years, with most &lt;10 years. Recurrence intervals for the multi-day rainfall of storms associated with debris flows range from &lt;1 to 158 years, but most were &gt;10 years. The low recurrence intervals of debris-flow producing rainfalls, compared with the 10-50 yr recurrence intervals for most debris flows, underscores the co-dependence of debris-flow initiation on geologic factors, including bedrock type and antecedent soil-moisture conditions. The primary geologic factor influencing debris-flow initiation in Grand Canyon is the exposure of shale units at heights &gt;100 m above the river. Exposed shale bedrock fails readily, either producing debris flows directly or contributing source material to wedges of colluvium that may fail later. Shales also provide silt- and clay-size particles that in part determine the rheological properties of debris flows.</span></p>","largerWorkType":{"id":4,"text":"Book"},"largerWorkTitle":"Proceedings of the 1997 1st international conference on debris-flow hazards mitigation: Mechanics, prediction, and assessment","largerWorkSubtype":{"id":12,"text":"Conference publication"},"conferenceTitle":"International Conference on Debris-Flow Hazards Mitigation: Mechanics, Prediction, and Assessment","conferenceDate":"Aug 7-9, 1997","conferenceLocation":"San Francisco, CA","language":"English","publisher":"American Society of Civil Engineers","usgsCitation":"Griffiths, P.G., Webb, R., and Melis, T., 1997, Initiation of debris flows in tributaries of the Colorado River in Grand Canyon, Arizona, <i>in</i> Proceedings of the 1997 1st international conference on debris-flow hazards mitigation: Mechanics, prediction, and assessment, San Francisco, CA, Aug 7-9, 1997, p. 12-20.","productDescription":"9 p.","startPage":"12","endPage":"20","costCenters":[{"id":49157,"text":"Rocky Mountain Regional Office","active":true,"usgs":true}],"links":[{"id":380929,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/thumbnails/outside_thumb.jpg"}],"country":"United States","state":"Arizona","otherGeospatial":"Colorado River, Grand Canyon","geographicExtents":"{\n  \"type\": \"FeatureCollection\",\n  \"features\": [\n    {\n      \"type\": \"Feature\",\n      \"properties\": {},\n      \"geometry\": {\n        \"type\": \"Polygon\",\n        \"coordinates\": [\n          [\n            [\n              -114.0380859375,\n              35.53222622770337\n            ],\n            [\n              -110.45654296875,\n              35.53222622770337\n            ],\n            [\n              -110.45654296875,\n              37.03763967977139\n            ],\n            [\n              -114.0380859375,\n              37.03763967977139\n            ],\n            [\n              -114.0380859375,\n              35.53222622770337\n            ]\n          ]\n        ]\n      }\n    }\n  ]\n}","noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Griffiths, Peter G. 0000-0002-8663-8907 pggriffi@usgs.gov","orcid":"https://orcid.org/0000-0002-8663-8907","contributorId":187,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Griffiths","given":"Peter","email":"pggriffi@usgs.gov","middleInitial":"G.","affiliations":[],"preferred":true,"id":805987,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1},{"text":"Webb, Robert rhwebb@usgs.gov","contributorId":187755,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Webb","given":"Robert","email":"rhwebb@usgs.gov","affiliations":[],"preferred":true,"id":805988,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":2},{"text":"Melis, Theodore S. 0000-0003-0473-3968 tmelis@usgs.gov","orcid":"https://orcid.org/0000-0003-0473-3968","contributorId":1829,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Melis","given":"Theodore S.","email":"tmelis@usgs.gov","affiliations":[{"id":568,"text":"Southwest Biological Science Center","active":true,"usgs":true}],"preferred":true,"id":805989,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":3}]}}

We infer hydrographs and flow behavior for recent debris flow in bedrock tributaries of the Colorado River from preserved stratigraphic relations, sedimentology and surface morphology of debris fans and evidence of flow-surface elevations. We propose that 3 types of debris-flow hydrographs occur in Grand Canyon: Type I flows have a single debris-flow peak followed by recessional 'hyperconcentrated flow' or streamflow; Type II flows have multiple debris-flow peaks with intervening 'hyperconcentrated flow' and (or) streamflow phases; and Type III flows begin as either Type I or Type II flows, but late-stage recessional streamflow is higher than the stage(s) of the debris-flow phase(s) and extensively reworks debris-flow deposits of buries them beneath streamflow sand and gravel. Field evidence shows that debris-flow peaks last for seconds to minutes, while recessional flows have durations of several hours to a day.</span></p>","largerWorkType":{"id":4,"text":"Book"},"largerWorkTitle":"Proceedings of the 1997 1st international conference on debris-flow hazards mitigation: Mechanics, prediction, and assessment","largerWorkSubtype":{"id":12,"text":"Conference publication"},"conferenceTitle":"International Conference on Debris-Flow Hazards Mitigation: Mechanics, Prediction, and Assessment","conferenceDate":"August 7-9, 1997","conferenceLocation":"San Francisco, CA","language":"English","publisher":"American Society of Civil Engineers","usgsCitation":"Melis, T., Webb, R., and Griffiths, P.G., 1997, Debris flows in Grand Canyon National Park: Peak discharges, flow transformations, and hydrographs, <i>in</i> Proceedings of the 1997 1st international conference on debris-flow hazards mitigation: Mechanics, prediction, and assessment, San Francisco, CA, August 7-9, 1997, p. 727-736.","productDescription":"10 p.","startPage":"727","endPage":"736","costCenters":[{"id":49157,"text":"Rocky Mountain Regional Office","active":true,"usgs":true}],"links":[{"id":380928,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/thumbnails/outside_thumb.jpg"}],"country":"United States","state":"Arizona","otherGeospatial":"Colorado River, Grand Canyon","geographicExtents":"{\n  \"type\": \"FeatureCollection\",\n  \"features\": [\n    {\n      \"type\": \"Feature\",\n      \"properties\": {},\n      \"geometry\": {\n        \"type\": \"Polygon\",\n        \"coordinates\": [\n          [\n            [\n              -114.0380859375,\n              35.53222622770337\n            ],\n            [\n              -110.45654296875,\n              35.53222622770337\n            ],\n            [\n              -110.45654296875,\n              37.03763967977139\n            ],\n            [\n              -114.0380859375,\n              37.03763967977139\n            ],\n            [\n              -114.0380859375,\n              35.53222622770337\n            ]\n          ]\n        ]\n      }\n    }\n  ]\n}","noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Melis, Theodore S. 0000-0003-0473-3968 tmelis@usgs.gov","orcid":"https://orcid.org/0000-0003-0473-3968","contributorId":1829,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Melis","given":"Theodore S.","email":"tmelis@usgs.gov","affiliations":[{"id":568,"text":"Southwest Biological Science Center","active":true,"usgs":true}],"preferred":true,"id":805984,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1},{"text":"Webb, Robert rhwebb@usgs.gov","contributorId":187755,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Webb","given":"Robert","email":"rhwebb@usgs.gov","affiliations":[],"preferred":true,"id":805985,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":2},{"text":"Griffiths, Peter G. 0000-0002-8663-8907 pggriffi@usgs.gov","orcid":"https://orcid.org/0000-0002-8663-8907","contributorId":187,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Griffiths","given":"Peter","email":"pggriffi@usgs.gov","middleInitial":"G.","affiliations":[],"preferred":true,"id":805986,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":3}]}}

Accuracies were estimated as 77% and 81.5% for the pre- and post- classifications that included water, emergent vegetation, floating vegetation, and mud flats. From the two classifications, areas of emergent vegetation loss were identified. The classifications and change map were compared to similar output generated from high resolution color infrared photography. The comparison showed spatial scale of the sensor was the most important factor in separation of classes in this type of wetland environment. Classifications derived by using the TM images provided good class separation when one class dominated more extensive areas (&gt;30 m), but not when mixtures of wetland types were on the same order as the TM sensor spatial resolution. Boundary pixel mixtures were problematic, however problems also occurred in areas of fairly continuous canopies containing small pockets of water and floating vegetation, and in areas of degrading marsh. Both areas were predominately misclassified as emergent vegetation. In the case of change detection, loss of emergent vegetation occurring as small pockets was not identified, whereas loss of degraded marsh was identified but the spatial continuity and extent overemphasized. In combination, these misclassifications resulted in the TM change analysis overpredicting emergent vegetation loss by about 40%.</span></p>","language":"English","publisher":"Coastal Education and Research Foundation","usgsCitation":"Ramsey III, E., and Laine, S., 1997, Comparison of Landsat Thematic Mapper and high resolution photography to Identify change in complex coastal wetlands: Journal of Coastal Research, v. 13, no. 2, p. 281-292.","productDescription":"12 p.","startPage":"281","endPage":"292","costCenters":[{"id":455,"text":"National Wetlands Research Center","active":true,"usgs":true},{"id":17705,"text":"Wetland and Aquatic Research Center","active":true,"usgs":true}],"links":[{"id":367958,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/thumbnails/outside_thumb.jpg"},{"id":367957,"rank":1,"type":{"id":15,"text":"Index Page"},"url":"https://www.jstor.org/stable/4298625"}],"country":"United States","state":"Louisiana","geographicExtents":"{\n  \"type\": \"FeatureCollection\",\n  \"features\": [\n    {\n      \"type\": \"Feature\",\n      \"properties\": {},\n      \"geometry\": {\n        \"type\": \"Polygon\",\n        \"coordinates\": [\n          [\n            [\n              -94.5703125,\n              28.729130483430154\n            ],\n            [\n              -88.72558593749999,\n              28.729130483430154\n            ],\n            [\n              -88.72558593749999,\n              33.54139466898275\n            ],\n            [\n              -94.5703125,\n              33.54139466898275\n            ],\n            [\n              -94.5703125,\n              28.729130483430154\n            ]\n          ]\n        ]\n      }\n    }\n  ]\n}","volume":"13","issue":"2","noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Ramsey III, Elijah 0000-0002-4518-5796","orcid":"https://orcid.org/0000-0002-4518-5796","contributorId":212009,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Ramsey III","given":"Elijah","affiliations":[{"id":17705,"text":"Wetland and Aquatic Research Center","active":true,"usgs":true}],"preferred":true,"id":772341,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1},{"text":"Laine, S.C.","contributorId":91651,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Laine","given":"S.C.","email":"","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":772342,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":2}]}}

Historically, \"acid rain\" has not been considered a potentially serious problem in the southeastern United States; however, recent studies have raised questions about the sensitivity of forest and aquatic resources to chronic pollutant loading. Intensive streamwater-quality monitoring during storms has shown that episodic acidification presently is occurring and likely will become substantially more severe in future decades. Acidic deposition at current rates does not appear to have direct adverse effects on forest health, but does contribute to the chronic loss of nutrient El Niño is a natural but largely unpredictable condition that results from complex interplay among clouds and storms, regional winds, oceanic temperatures, and ocean currents along the equatorial Pacific.</p><p>Under \"normal\" conditions, the tropical trade winds blow from east to west,</p><p>Figure 1. In the eastern Pacific, the trade winds pull up cold, deep, nutrient-rich waters along the equator from the Ecuadorian coast to the central Pacific. The warmth of the western Pacific results in a particularly vigorous hydrologic cycle there with towering cumulus clouds and tropical storms that \"radiate\" atmospheric waves and disturbances across vast regions of the globe. Heat and moisture lofted into the upper atmosphere by the clouds and storms are distributed by high-altitude winds across vast regions of the globe.</p><p>During an El Niño, this situation is disrupted and the trade winds weaken, thus reducing the upwelling of cool waters in the eastern Pacific and allowing the pool of warm water in the west to drift eastward toward South America. As the central and eastern Pacific warms, atmospheric pressure gradients along the equator weaken, and the trade winds diminish even more.</p><p>These changes in sea-level pressure of the atmosphere are characteristic of the strongest El Niño and were identified as the \"Southern Oscillation\" of the global atmosphere by Sir Gilbert Walker in the early decades of this century. A chicken-and-egg relation exists between the changes in ocean temperatures and changes in winds (and atmospheric pressure gradients); the two sets of changes reinforce and drive each other but neither is clearly or universally \"the\" initiator of El Niño. Ocean temperatures and surface winds interact to form the complex process, El Niño-Southern Oscillation (ENSO). The interactions can be set off by subtle changes in one or the other, by buffeting from other parts of the tropics, or from regions beyond the tropics. Such a complex interplay and its uncertain (and variable) origins are the primary limitations on our ability to predict El Niño.</p><p>As the waters of the central and eastern Pacific warm, the powerful tropical Pacific storms begin to form farther east than usual (Fig. 1). As the distribution of storms spreads east along the equator, their influence on global weather systems also changes. Most notably, for our purposes, the jet stream over the North Pacific Ocean is invigorated and pulled farther south than normal, where it collects moisture and storms and carries them to the southwestern United States and northern Mexico.</p><p>During an El Niño, the trade winds are too weak to cause upwelling of nutrient-rich waters off the coasts of Ecuador and Peru. Generations of South American fisherman thus have recognized these conditions by the disappearance of their standard catch, commonly during December and January, every three to seven years. Because of the near coincidence in timing between these conditions and Christmas, the fishing communities have called the phenomenon \"El Niño\", for the Christ child. The geologic record suggests that El Niño conditions have been a part of earth's climate for at least several thousand years.</p><p>An El Niño event usually lasts for several seasons, and, along with its other effects, represents an interruption of the \"normal\" seasonal cycle of the tropical climate. After a few seasons, and usually during spring time (in the Northern Hemisphere), the seasonal cycle reasserts itself and the tropical ocean cools back to the normal east-to-west sea-surface temperature gradients. Sometimes the warm El Niño events give way to unusually cold sea-surface temperatures and unusually strong trade winds, a condition now called La Niña. On other occasions, La Niñas may begin on their own, without an immediately preceding El Niño. The effects of the El Niño and La Niña on global climate are, in part, mirror images of each other. For example, drought is a common occurrence in the southwestern United States during La Niña, in contrast to the wet years associated with El Niño.</p>","largerWorkType":{"id":4,"text":"Book"},"largerWorkTitle":"Impact of climate change and land use in the southwestern United Strontium is a trace element in calcite, generally at the tens to hundreds of ppm level. Because calcite contains very little rubidium and the half-life of the <sup>87</sup>Rb parent is billions of years, the <sup>87</sup>Sr/<sup>86</sup>Sr ratios of the calcite record the ratio in the water from which the calcite precipitated. Dissolution and reprecipitation does not alter these compositions so that, in the absence of other sources of strontium, one would expect the strontium ratios along a flow path to preserve variations inherited from strontium in the soil zone. Strontium isotope compositions of calcites from various settings in the Yucca Mountain region have contributed to the understanding of the unsaturated zone (UZ), especially in distinguishing unsaturated zone calcite from saturated zone calcite. Different populations of calcite have been compared, either to group them together or distinguish them from each other in terms of their strontium isotope compositions. Ground water and perched water have also been analyzed; this paper presents strontium isotope data obtained on pore water.</span></p>","largerWorkType":{"id":4,"text":"Book"},"largerWorkTitle":"Proceedings of FTAM: Field testing and associated modeling of potential high-level nuclear waste geologic disposal sites","largerWorkSubtype":{"id":12,"text":"Conference publication"},"conferenceTitle":"FTAM: Field testing and associated modeling of potential high-level nuclear waste geologic disposal sites","conferenceDate":"Dec 15-16, 1997","conferenceLocation":"Berkeley, CA","language":"English","publisher":"University of California","usgsCitation":"Marshall, B.D., Futa, K., and Peterman, Z.E., 1997, Hydrologic inferences from strontium isotopes in pore water from the unsaturated zone at Yucca Mountain, Nevada, <i>in</i> Proceedings of FTAM: Field testing and associated modeling of potential high-level nuclear waste geologic disposal sites, Berkeley, CA, Dec 15-16, 1997, p. 55-56.","productDescription":"2 p.","startPage":"55","endPage":"56","costCenters":[{"id":35995,"text":"Geology, Geophysics, and Geochemistry Science Center","active":true,"usgs":true}],"links":[{"id":382813,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/thumbnails/outside_thumb.jpg"},{"id":382812,"rank":1,"type":{"id":15,"text":"Index Page"},"url":"https://www.osti.gov/biblio/290862-hydrologic-inferences-from-strontium-isotopes-pore-water-from-unsaturated-zone-yucca-mountain-nevada"}],"country":"United States","state":"Nevada","otherGeospatial":"Yucca Mountain","geographicExtents":"{\n  \"type\": \"FeatureCollection\",\n  \"features\": [\n    {\n      \"type\": \"Feature\",\n      \"properties\": {},\n      \"geometry\": {\n        \"type\": \"Polygon\",\n        \"coordinates\": [\n          [\n            [\n              -116.48254394531249,\n              36.91352904330221\n            ],\n            [\n              -116.43602371215822,\n              36.91352904330221\n            ],\n            [\n              -116.43602371215822,\n              36.95757376878687\n            ],\n            [\n              -116.48254394531249,\n              36.95757376878687\n            ],\n            [\n              -116.48254394531249,\n              36.91352904330221\n            ]\n          ]\n        ]\n      }\n    }\n  ]\n}","noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Marshall, Brian D. 0000-0002-8093-0093 bdmarsha@usgs.gov","orcid":"https://orcid.org/0000-0002-8093-0093","contributorId":520,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Marshall","given":"Brian","email":"bdmarsha@usgs.gov","middleInitial":"D.","affiliations":[{"id":35995,"text":"Geology, Geophysics, and Geochemistry Science Center","active":true,"usgs":true}],"preferred":true,"id":809424,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1},{"text":"Futa, Kiyoto 0000-0001-8649-7510 kfuta@usgs.gov","orcid":"https://orcid.org/0000-0001-8649-7510","contributorId":619,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Futa","given":"Kiyoto","email":"kfuta@usgs.gov","affiliations":[{"id":164,"text":"Central Energy Resources Science Center","active":true,"usgs":true}],"preferred":true,"id":809425,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":2},{"text":"Peterman, Zell E. 0000-0002-5694-8082 peterman@usgs.gov","orcid":"https://orcid.org/0000-0002-5694-8082","contributorId":167699,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Peterman","given":"Zell","email":"peterman@usgs.gov","middleInitial":"E.","affiliations":[{"id":164,"text":"Central Energy Resources Science Center","active":true,"usgs":true}],"preferred":true,"id":809426,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":3}]}}

The method uses a parameter that combines centroid frequency down shift and variance increase for the projection function to construct the tomography algorithm. In comparison with other methods for estimating attenuation, the frequency down shift method is relatively insensitive to the effects of geometric spreading, antenna coupling, antenna radiation pattern,and instrument response, but the method requires the data to be broad-band so the frequency shift is easily measured. This method is well suited for difference tomography when electrically conductive tracers are used. The method was tested using cross-hole radar data acquired before and during a saline tracer injection experiment at the U.S.Geological Survey’s Fractured Rock Research Site at Mirror Lake, in Grafton County, New Hampshire. The attenuation-difference tomogram clearly outlines the location of the saline tracer within the tomography plane.</p>","largerWorkType":{"id":4,"text":"Book"},"largerWorkTitle":"SEG technical program expanded abstracts","largerWorkSubtype":{"id":12,"text":"Conference publication"},"conferenceTitle":"Society of Exploration Geophysicists International Exposition and Sixty-Seventh Annual Meeting,","conferenceDate":"November 2-7, 1997","conferenceLocation":"Dallas, TX","language":"English","publisher":"Society of Exploration Geophysicists","usgsCitation":"Liu, L., Zhou, C., Lane, J., and Haeni, F., 1997, Cross‐hole radar attenuation tomography using a frequency centroid down‐shift method: Consideration of non‐linear frequency dependence of EM wave attenuation, <i>in</i> SEG technical program expanded abstracts, Dallas, TX, November 2-7, 1997, p. 442-445.","productDescription":"4 p.","startPage":"442","endPage":"445","costCenters":[{"id":493,"text":"Office of Ground Water","active":true,"usgs":true}],"links":[{"id":368814,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/thumbnails/outside_thumb.jpg"}],"country":"United States","state":"New Hampshire","county":"Grafton County","otherGeospatial":"Mirror Lake","geographicExtents":"{\n \"type\": \"FeatureCollection\",\n \"features\": [\n {\n \"type\": \"Feature\",\n \"properties\": {},\n \"geometry\": {\n \"type\": \"Polygon\",\n \"coordinates\": [\n [\n [\n -71.7026138305664,\n 43.9407373431014\n ],\n [\n -71.68905258178711,\n 43.9407373431014\n ],\n [\n -71.68905258178711,\n 43.94629935894505\n ],\n [\n -71.7026138305664,\n 43.94629935894505\n ],\n [\n -71.7026138305664,\n 43.9407373431014\n ]\n ]\n ]\n }\n }\n ]\n}","noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Liu, Lanbo","contributorId":199850,"corporation":false,"usgs":false,"family":"Liu","given":"Lanbo","email":"","affiliations":[{"id":6619,"text":"University of Connecticutt","active":true,"usgs":false}],"preferred":false,"id":774336,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1},{"text":"Zhou, Chaoguang","contributorId":220151,"corporation":false,"usgs":false,"family":"Zhou","given":"Chaoguang","email":"","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":774337,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":2},{"text":"Lane, John W.
