Maps are generated by combining digital ownership data with geologic resource estimates and other spatial coal data in a geographic information system (GIS). For example, we merged the newly compiled Federal coal ownership files with resource calculations from the 1970's for the Powder River Basin (Trent, 1986). For the first time, we are able to visually display the location of Federally owned coal in each 7.5' quadrangle along with the published coal resource estimates for those areas (fig. 8).

The Southern Massanutten Roadless Area contains about 11,800 acres in the George Washington National Forest in the Valley and Ridge physiographic province of west-central Virginia.  The area, which is 13 mi long and 1 to 2 mi wide, is in Page and Rockingham Counties on the eastern side of the Shenandoah Valley, between the North and South Forks of the Shenandoah River.  The north end is 11 mi southwest of Luray and the south end is 7 mi east of Harrisonburg (fig. 1).  The roadless area is characterized by a series of long sandstone ridges collectively called Massanutten Mountain.  Ridge crests are 1,100 to 1,900 ft above the Shenandoah Valley floor, and are composed principally of resistant Massanutten Sandstone, which is overlain by thin shales and limestones bearing iron mineralization.  The Martinsburg Shale and several limestones rock units underlie the Massanutten Sandstone (Brent, 1960, pl. 1.; Allen, 1967, pl. 1).  The entire sequence has been folded into a synclinorium (Brent, 1960, p. 81).

Although many of these strata have been mined in the Shenandoah Valley, production of mineral commodities from within the roadless area has been minimal (fig. 1).

The Chama River Canyon Wilderness, in Rio Arriba County, north-central New Mexico, covers 50,300 acres (20,364 hectares) within the Coyote and Cuba Ranger Districts of the Santa Fe National Forest and the Canjilon Ranger District of the Carson National Forest. In 1979 the U.S. Forest Service, under the Forest Service Roadless Area Review and Evaluation (RARE II) program, designated three additional areas, contiguous to the wilderness, for further planning to assess wilderness characteristics. These areas, totaling 4,800 acres (1,945 hectares), were collectively designated Roadless area 03098; they have since been dropped from consideration.

The Rattlesnake Roadless Area was identified by the U.S. Forest Service as a possible addition to the Wilderness System.  This 120 square mile area is north of Missoula, Mont. (see index map); Rattlesnake Creek forms the major drainage to the south.

The rocks in the study area consist mainly of the Helena Formation and the Missoula Group of the Belt Supergroup (Proterozoic Y).  Rock units of less importance are diabase sills and dikes of probable Proterozoic Z age, Middle Cambrian rocks, and glacial deposits.  Structurally, the study area consists of the Rattlesnake thrust system in the south part and a parautochthonous area broken by vertical faults in the north part.

The Rattlesnake Road less Area covers 32,870 acres between long 11°37'30\" and long 111°47'30\" W. and between lat 34°40' and lat 34°45' N., Coconino and Yavapai Counties, in central Arizona. Sedona and 0ak Creek, the nearest population centers, are located, respectively, at the northwest corner and along the west boundary of the roadless area.

\n

The Rattlesnake Roadless Area includes the deeply embayed Mogollon Rim margin of the Colorado Plateau Province and part of the Werde Walley. The Werde Walley is a deeply dissected lacustrine basin, one of several tectonic basins in the Arizona transition zone that separate the Basin and Range Province from the Colorado Plateau Province. Here the plateau surface falls off abruptly to the Werde Valley, drained by the Werde River, the master stream of the region.

\n

The highest point in the roadless area is 6,834 ft at the basalt cap at the north end of Munds Mountain. The lowest point, about 3,480 ft, is along Dry Beaver Creek, near the southwest corner of the roadless area. The maximum relief, more than 2,000 ft, occurs between the Munds-Lee Mountain divide and the valley floors of bordering Oak Creek and Jacks Canyon. The relief between floor and upper canyon rims along the steep-walled and narrow Woods Canyon ranges from 900 ft to more than 1,400 ft; the east side of the canyon has the highest walls.

Canyon rims in the roadless area are accessible by several four-wheel-drive trails across the plateau surface from points along Schnebly Hill Road and Highway I-17. Access to Jacks Canyon is by road and four-wheel-drive trail to Jacks Canyon Tank, about 4 mi up the canyon from Highway 179. Access to the head of Jacks Canyon is by foot or horse along a well-maintained trail. Access to the bottom of Woods Canyon is by four-wheel-drive vehicle for about 2 mi from Highway 179 and then by pack trail for about 5 mi more.
