Where naleds occur, stream channels are wide and often form braided channels. Their distribution can be related to changes in stream gradient and to the occurrence of springs. Large naleds, such as on the Kongakut River, often remain through the summer melt season to form the nucleus of icing in the succeeding winter. Major naleds also are likely to significantly influence the nature of permafrost in their immediate vicinity. In addition, a list of invertebrate taxa identified to various taxonomic levels is given for 42 sites along the pipeline. In addition, unpublished data collected by Hoare during more than 30 years of personal familiarity with the region have been added where appropriate. In addition, a new site at pipeline mile 22 near Deadhorse (alignment No 134) along the Sagavanirktok River was put under surveillance. Except for changes wrought by the completion of construction, most of the sites showed very little change. Significant events include virtual completion of all construction activities along the pipeline, the pipeline startup , and the breakup flood along the Sagavanirktok River which breached many river-training structures. In general, 1977 saw heavy flooding on streams draining the north and south slopes of the Brooks Range and only moderate flooding on streams further south. Aerial photogrammetric surveys were used again in 1977 on the same seven sites as in 1976. Results document the applicability of the method for channel erosion studies. The study area is characterized by its cold climate and is largely uninhabited, but oil and gas discoveries have spurred development of parts of the area. Sensible, coordinated development requires information about water resources. The purpose of the April reconnaissance was to locate winter streamflow and describe its quantity and quality. A followup summer trip was made in August to determine the flood characteristics of selected streams by measuring channel geometry in relation to bankfull discharge and the maximum evident flood and by estimating channel roughness. In addition, one lake was sampled, the discharge of a few springs was measured, and samples of spring water were taken. Because streamflow in August was assumed to be representative of normal summer flow, water quality was examined in streams for which flood surveys had been made. Samples of aquatic invertebrate populations were taken from most sites on the April and August trips. Another reconnaissance trip from Prudhoe Bay east to Canada was made in November to measure discharge in selected streams and springs, to measure ice thickness and water depth in selected lakes, and to collect water samples for water-quality analyses. In particular, barges moving freight onshore over the past 8 years, have used the Prudhoe Bay entrance channel almost exclusively. To further facilitate the offloading of supply barges, Atlantic Richfield Company constructed a gravel fill causeway in 1975 between the Prudhoe Bay channel and Stump Island (Fig. 1). As initially constructed, the causeway extended 1.3 km perpendicular to the coast. The new holes (PB-1, PB-2, and PB-3, Figure 1) were drilled in spring, 1976 (see Sellmann, 1976) as part of a cooperative study of off-shore permafrost by the USGS, CRREL, and the University of Alaska. The high-grade metasedimentary rocks give a whole-rock Rb-Sr age of 735 m.y. This late Precambrian age is believed to be the time of metamorphism. Orthogneisses, intrusive into the metasedimentary rocks, are probably also Precambrian in age; but many samples have had their ages disturbed by Cretaceous intrusions and thrusting.</p><p>Samples of Precambrian metagabbro are low in radioelements (U, Th, and K) typical of basalitc rocks.
