Concentrations of organochlorine pesticides, polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs), and other organochlorine compounds were determined in biological tissue and surficial bed sediment from 16 stream sites in the Trinity River Basin of east-central Texas. Asiatic clams (Corbicula fluminea) were collected at 10 sites, and fish, including blue catfish (Ictalurus furcatus), common carp (Cyprinus carpio), bluegill (Lepomis cyanellus), and yellow bullhead (Ameiurus natalis) were collected at all mainstem and two tributary sites. Thirty of the 36 compounds analyzed in biological tissue or surficial bed sediment were detected in one or both media. Overall, more organochlorine compounds were detected in bed sediment than in biological tissue; however, various chlordane isomers, DDT metabolites, and PCBs were detected more frequently in tissue than in sediment. The chlordane isomers and PCBs that were detected more frequently in biological tissue also were detected more frequently at urban sites than at agricultural sites. Organochlorine compound concentrations generally were highest in fish tissue from Trinity River mainstem sites. Fish tissue from the mainstem sites contained a higher percentage of lipids than did fish- and clam-tissue samples from the tributary sites.","language":"ENGLISH","publisher":"Geological Survey (U.S.)","doi":"10.3133/wri974057","usgsCitation":"Moring, J., 1997, Occurrence and Distribution of Organochlorine Compounds in Biological Tissue and Bed Sediment From Streams in the Trinity River Basin, Texas, 1992-93: U.S. Geological Survey Water-Resources Investigations Report 97-4057, iv, 19 p., https://doi.org/10.3133/wri974057.","productDescription":"iv, 19 p.","costCenters":[{"id":583,"text":"Texas Water Science Center","active":true,"usgs":true},{"id":595,"text":"U.S. Geological Survey","active":false,"usgs":true}],"links":[{"id":124518,"rank":0,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/wri/1997/4057/report-thumb.jpg"},{"id":57636,"rank":300,"type":{"id":11,"text":"Document"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/wri/1997/4057/report.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}}],"noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e4afbe4b07f02db6963d7","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Moring, J. The profiles illustrate the 1992 floods along the Thompson, Weldon, Chariton, and South Fork Chariton Rivers and along Elk Creek in the south-central Iowa counties of Adair, Clarke, Decatur, Lucas, Madison, Ringgold, Union, and Wayne. Water-surface-elevation profiles for the floods of July 4, 1981, along the Chariton River in Lucas County and along the South Fork Chariton River in Wayne County also are included in the report for comparative purposes. The September 15-16, 1992, floods are the largest known peak discharges at gaging stations Thompson River at Davis City (station number 06898000) 57,000 cubic feet per second, Weldon River near Leon (station number 06898400) 76,200 cubic feet per second, Chariton River near Chariton (station number 06903400) 37,700 cubic feet per second, and South Fork Chariton River near Promise City (station number 06903700) 70,600 cubic feet per second. The peak discharges were, respectively, 1.7, 2.6, 1.4, and 2.1 times larger than calculated 100-year recurrence-interval discharges. The report provides information on flood stages and discharges and floodflow frequencies for streamflow-gaging stations in the Thompson, Weldon, and Chariton River Basins using flood information collected through 1995. Information on temporary bench marks and reference points established in the Thompson and Weldon River Basins during 1994-95, and in the Chariton River Basin during 1983-84 and 1994-95, also is included in the report. A flood history summarizes rainfall conditions and damages for floods that occurred during 1947, 1959, 1981, 1992, and 1993.
","language":"English","publisher":"U.S. Geological Hydraulic data for these programs were determined fromonsite inspections and surveys, and from previously conducted Flood Insurance Studies (FIS).Discharge values with their appropriate recurrence intervals also were obtained fromthe previous FIS. The computation of water-surface elevations using step-backwater and culvert analyses indicate that free flow occurs through all drainage structures for all discharges equal to or less than those having a 100-year recurrence interval (400,000 cubic feet per second_ an the water-surface elevations are lower than the lowest point on the roadway. The total capacity of the three drainage-structure openings is sufficient at the 500-year recurrence- interval discharge (55,000 cubic feet per second) to prevent flow over the roadway. Flow over the roadway begins when total discharge exceeds about 58,000 cubic feet per second.","language":"ENGLISH","publisher":"U.S. Geological Survey ;\r\nInformation Services [distributor],","doi":"10.3133/ofr9713","issn":"0094-9140","usgsCitation":"Clement, R., and Perry, C.A., 1997, Hydraulic analysis of U.S. Highway 75 crossing of the Fall River at Neodesha, Southeast Kansas: U.S. Geological Survey Open-File Report 97-13, iv, 15 p. :ill., map ;28 cm., https://doi.org/10.3133/ofr9713.","productDescription":"iv, 15 p. :ill., map ;28 cm.","costCenters":[],"links":[{"id":156581,"rank":0,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1997/0013/report-thumb.jpg"},{"id":52179,"rank":300,"type":{"id":11,"text":"Document"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1997/0013/report.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}}],"noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e4a52e4b07f02db62a494","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Clement, R.W.","contributorId":11247,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Clement","given":"R.W.","email":"","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":188779,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1},{"text":"Perry, C. A numerical model of the ground-water-flow system near the Fire Training Area was developed to provide information for the design and operation of a contaminant removal system. The goals of the simulation modeling were to (1) determine the maximum pumping rate that could be sustained, giventhe constraint that water levels not rise above a specified altitude, and (2) determine the effect of seasonal variation in recharge on the ability of a transient pumping scenario to capture contaminants. A steady-state simulation model of ground-water flow was used to determine the optimal pumping rate at the site. The optimal pumping rate was 8,570 ft3/d (44 gal/min). Monthly recharge rates wereestimated for use in a transient simulation model. During a typical year, most recharge probably occurs during two periods-one during snowmelt in early spring and another, possibly less significant period, during the late fall. The transient response of the water table to 8.5 inches of recharge in April, 2 inches of recharge in October, and 0.25 inches of recharge per month for each remaining month wassimulated. Fluctuations in ground-water levels caused by simulated seasonal variation of recharge would have minimal effect on the operation of thecontaminant removal system because the system is not pumped when recharge is lowest, ground-water velocities are lowest, and ground-water flow past the trench is minimal.","language":"ENGLISH","publisher":"U.S. Geological Survey ;\r\nInformation Services [distributor],","doi":"10.3133/wri974055","usgsCitation":"Starn, J., 1997, Simulation of ground-water flow and application to the design of a contaminant removal system, Loring Air Force Base, Maine: U.S. Geological Survey Water-Resources Investigations Report 97-4055, iv, 15 p. :ill., map ;28 cm., https://doi.org/10.3133/wri974055.","productDescription":"iv, 15 p. :ill., map ;28 cm.","costCenters":[],"links":[{"id":160247,"rank":0,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/wri/1997/4055/report-thumb.jpg"},{"id":58734,"rank":300,"type":{"id":11,"text":"Document"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/wri/1997/4055/report.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}}],"noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e49f8e4b07f02db5f2c80","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Starn, J.J.","contributorId":69591,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Starn","given":"J.J.","email":"","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":202356,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1}]}}

In tests to determine the suitability of this rust as a biological control agent for R. penetransin Hawaii, a species now thought to be conspecific with R. argutus,rooted cuttings of the Hawaiian plants were grown at North Carolina State University, inoculated, and observed. Other introduced weedy Rubus spp. in Hawaii, including R. ellipticus, R. rosifolius, and R. glaucus,as well as the two endemic species R. hawaiensis and R. macraei,also were inoculated. No species of Rubusare of commercial importance in Hawaii, but the protection of the native species, of which R. macraei is rare, was of utmost concern. The native Hawaiian species did not survive well in North Carolina in this study, however. Later availability of a plant pathogen containment laboratory in Hawaii enabled similar tests to be conducted at that facility. In addition to the above species, R. spectabilis (salmonberry), a species native to the Pacific Northwest with which the Hawaiian Rubus spp. are thought to share a common ancestor, was inoculated in Hawaii. Infection with G. nitens under natural field conditions becomes apparent only when sporulation occurs on floricanes the second year following infection. However, experimental inoculation led to early responses of chlorotic leaf flecking and puckering, leaf and stem contortion, and stem gall formation, indicating the sensitivity of R. penetrans (=R. argutus), R. hawaiensis, and R. macraei to this rust. Apparent systemic infection also resulted in sporulation on one plant of R. macraei. Ability to attack the endemic species suggests that G. nitens would not be suitable for release in Hawaii as a biological control agent, at least on the islands with populations of the native species.
","language":"English","publisher":"Academic Press","publisherLocation":"Orlando, FL","doi":"10.1006/bcon.1997.0554","usgsCitation":"Gardner, D., Hodges, C., Killgore, E., and The underlying physical and chemical phenomena potentially responsible for this apparent sequestration of HOCs by geosorbents are not well understood. This challenges our concepts for assessing exposure and toxicity and for setting environmental quality criteria. Currently there are no direct observational data revealing the molecular-scale locations in which nonpolar organic compounds accumulate when associated with natural soils or sediments. Hence macroscopic observations are used to make inferences about sorption mechanisms and the chemical factors affecting the sequestration of HOCs by geosorbents. Recent observations suggest that HOC interactions with geosorbents comprise different inorganic and organic surfaces and matrices, and distinctions may be drawn along these lines, particularly with regard to the roles of inorganic micropores, natural sorbent organic matter components, combustion residue particulate carbon, and spilled organic liquids. Certain manipulations of sorbates or sorbent media may help reveal sorption mechanisms, but mixed sorption phenomena complicate the interpretation of macroscopic data regarding diffusion of HOCs into and out of different matrices and the hysteretic sorption and aging effects commonly observed for geosorbents. Analytical characterizations at the microscale, and mechanistic models derived therefrom, are needed to advance scientific knowledge of HOC sequestration, release, and environmental risk.
","language":"English","publisher":"American Chemical Society","doi":"10.1021/es970512m","usgsCitation":"Luthy, R.G., Aiken, G.R., Brusseau, M.L., Cunningham, S.D., Gschwend, P.M., Pignatello, J.J., Reinhard, M., Traina, S.J., Weber, W.J., and Westall, J.C., 1997, Sequestration of hydrophobic organic contaminants by geosorbents: Environmental Science & Technology, v. 31, no. 12, p. 3341-3347, https://doi.org/10.1021/es970512m.","productDescription":"7 p. Semiannual measurements from 1991 to 1994 of dust deposition rates (dust flux) and composition 2 m above the ground at seven sites in Owens Valley show that (1) dust in Owens Valley is derived mainly from the playa, although areas closer to the sites can also be sources; (2) south of the playa, dust flux is higher in the winter than in the summer, but north of the playa, dust flux is about the same or slightly lower in the winter; (3) on the playa, interannual variation in dust flux is large (factors of 5–10 during the 3 years), but at downwind sites, the variation is much smaller; (4) the dust typically has total soluble salt content as high as 30%, generally much higher than that of dust elsewhere in southern Nevada and California; and (5) to a distance of at least 40 km south of the playa, soluble salt flux is significantly higher than regional rates. The dust flux measurements indicate that significant quantities of salt‐rich dust are probably being added to the soils in the region around Owens Lake playa; these dust additions may affect soil pH and vegetation.

","language":"English","publisher":"Wiley","doi":"10.1029/97JD01967","usgsCitation":"Reheis, M.C., 1997, Dust deposition downwind of Owens (dry) Lake, 1991–1994: Preliminary findings: Journal of Geophysical Research D: Atmospheres, v. 102, no. American shad ascended and descended the fishway exclusively by surface weirs, while sea lampreys used both surface weirs and submerged orifices. Upstream movement of American shad during the day was higher than at night at both lower and middle fishway observation sites. Peak downstream movement of American shad at both locations was associated with decreasing light levels in the evening. Sea lampreys moved primarily at night at the lower and middle fishway sites. Mean daily passage efficiency was low (1% for American shad, −2% for sea lamprey) at the lower fishway surface weir, but passage efficiency at the middle fishway surface weir was moderate (70% for American shad, 35% for sea lamprey) .
