This circular and a companion folio of maps represent results of integrated field and laboratory studies in the disciplines of geology, geophysics, geochemistry, and satellite imagery that are designed to provide a modern mineral resource assessment of the quadrangle. The maps are accompanied by descriptive texts, explanatory material, pertinent references, and by a few auxiliary tables and diagrams. This circular provides background information for the mineral resource assessment and integrates the component maps. It also includes a master list of references (see 'Bibliography') relevant to the geology and mineral deposits of the quadrangle.","language":"ENGLISH","publisher":"U.S. Geological Survey ;\r\nDept. of the Interior, Geological Survey, Branch of Distribution,","doi":"10.3133/cir739","usgsCitation":"MacKevett, E., Albert, N.R., Barnes, D., Case, J.E., Robinson, K., and Singer, D., 1977, The Alaskan Mineral Resource Assessment Program; background information to accompany folio of geologic and mineral resource maps of the McCarthy Quadrangle, Alaska: U.S. Geological Survey Circular 739, iii, 23 p. :maps ;26 cm. , https://doi.org/10.3133/cir739.","productDescription":"iii, 23 p. :maps ;26 cm. Beryllium deposits at Spor Mountain and the Honeycomb Hills are uniquely associated with topaz-bearing rhyolite of Late Tertiary age and are restricted to porous water-laid tuff and breccia that contains carbonate clasts. The beryllium deposits are near both local and regional faults that probably provided conduits for mineralizing fluids.The beryllium deposits contain sizable but uneconomic concentrations of fluorite, lithium (in smectite), manganese oxides, zinc (in smectite and manganese oxides), and uranium, as well as many trace elements. Distinctive zones of argillic and feldspathic alteration enclose the beryllium deposits and generally are parallel to the original stratification of the host tuff. Anomalous concentrations of fluorine, beryllium, cesium, lithium, gallium, niobium, and yttrium occur in relatively unmineralized tuff nearby; these elements form extensive but discontinuous halos around the Spor Mountain beryllium and fluorspar district.The mineralized areas at Spor Mountain and the Honeycomb Hills may be the tops of extensive altered zones that contain deep ore deposits. Anomalous molybdenum, lead, tin, and tungsten in beryllium deposits at Spor Mountain may indicate such leakage. Consideration of possible zonation of ore deposits suggests that if ore deposits do exist at depth, they are in greisens, banded tactites, and medium to high temperature veins similar to the tin-beryllium deposits in the York Mountains of Alaska.
","language":"English","publisher":" Society of Economic Geologists","doi":"10.2113/gsecongeo.72.2.219","usgsCitation":"Lindsey, D.A., 1977, Epithermal beryllium deposits in water-laid tuff, western Utah: Economic Geology, v. 72, no. 2, p. 219-232, https://doi.org/10.2113/gsecongeo.72.2.219.","productDescription":"14 p.","startPage":"219","endPage":"232","costCenters":[{"id":35995,"text":"Geology, Geophysics, and Geochemistry Science Center","active":true,"usgs":true}],"links":[{"id":371228,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/thumbnails/outside_thumb.jpg"}],"country":"United States","state":"Utah","geographicExtents":"{\n  \"type\": \"FeatureCollection\",\n  \"features\": [\n    {\n      \"type\": \"Feature\",\n      \"properties\": {},\n      \"geometry\": {\n        \"type\": \"Polygon\",\n        \"coordinates\": [\n          [\n            [\n              -114.0435791015625,\n              39.11727568585598\n            ],\n            [\n              -112.225341796875,\n              39.11727568585598\n            ],\n            [\n              -112.225341796875,\n              40.195659093364654\n            ],\n            [\n              -114.0435791015625,\n              40.195659093364654\n            ],\n            [\n              -114.0435791015625,\n              39.11727568585598\n            ]\n          ]\n        ]\n      }\n    }\n  ]\n}","volume":"72","issue":"2","noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationDate":"1977-04-01","publicationStatus":"PW","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Lindsey, David A. 0000-0002-9466-0899 dlindsey@usgs.gov","orcid":"https://orcid.org/0000-0002-9466-0899","contributorId":773,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Lindsey","given":"David","email":"dlindsey@usgs.gov","middleInitial":"A.","affiliations":[{"id":171,"text":"Central Mineral and Environmental Resources Science Center","active":true,"usgs":true}],"preferred":true,"id":779423,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1}]}}

The hydrocarbons were identified in the near-bottom waters downcurrent for more than 100 kilometers from a sea-floor point source. Preliminary dynamic modeling estimates of the initial gas phase composition predict methane/ethane and ethane/propane ratios of 24 and 1.7, respectively, assuming the hydrocarbons were introduced by bubbles. The low ethane/propane ratio is indicative of gas from a liquid petroleum source rather than from nonassociated or biogenic natural gas. Preliminary data on the structural geology of Norton Basin lend support to the interpretation based on the hydrocarbon plume. Unconformably truncated strata dip basinward from the seep locus; acoustic anomalies and numerous steeply dipping faults in the immediate vicinity of the seep are corroborating evidence that shallow gas- or petroleum-charged sediments and strata coincide with avenues for migration of mobile hydrocarbons to the sea floor. These factors, taken in concert with the sedimentological regime, the recent revision (increase) of basin depth estimates, and the highly localized hydrocarbon source, strongly suggest a thermogenic rather than a recent biogenic origin for these gaseous compounds.
","language":"English","publisher":"American Association for the Advancement of Science","doi":"10.1126/science.198.4322.1149","issn":"00368075","usgsCitation":"Cline, J., and Holmes, M., 1977, Submarine seepage of natural gas in Norton Sound, Alaska: Science, v. 198, no. 4322, p. 1149-1153, https://doi.org/10.1126/science.198.4322.1149.","productDescription":"5 p.","startPage":"1149","endPage":"1153","costCenters":[],"links":[{"id":219042,"rank":1,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/thumbnails/outside_thumb.jpg"}],"country":"United States","state":"Alaska","otherGeospatial":"Norton Sound","geographicExtents":"{\n  \"type\": \"FeatureCollection\",\n  \"features\": [\n    {\n      \"type\": \"Feature\",\n      \"properties\": {},\n      \"geometry\": {\n        \"coordinates\": [\n          [\n            [\n              -166.46153501237765,\n              64.76584240561928\n            ],\n            [\n              -166.46153501237765,\n              62.990803823044075\n            ],\n            [\n              -159.86844531048,\n              62.990803823044075\n            ],\n            [\n              -159.86844531048,\n              64.76584240561928\n            ],\n            [\n              -166.46153501237765,\n              64.76584240561928\n            ]\n          ]\n        ],\n        \"type\": \"Polygon\"\n      }\n    }\n  ]\n}","volume":"198","issue":"4322","noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"505b9d33e4b08c986b31d6d6","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Cline, J.D.","contributorId":46212,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Cline","given":"J.D.","email":"","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":357308,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1},{"text":"Holmes, M.L.","contributorId":89528,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Holmes","given":"M.L.","email":"","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":357309,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":2}]}}

Numerous scientific field parties have viewed or visited the locality and published short accounts of their observations. The river bluffs are as much as 90 meters high and are composed of Tertiary lignite-rich sedimentary rocks and frozen Quaternary sand, silt, and gravel. Resampling and analysis of pollen show that the Tertiary rocks are Miocene rather than Miocene and Pliocene as previously thought. The Miocene flora, possessing a number of conifer and hardwood-tree types, was more varied than the present vegetation and indicates a warmer and wetter climate than at present. Benthic invertebrates were collected by dip net, drift net, and 10-rock collections, and results were combined for each station. Forty-nine taxa were identified from 5 stations representing stream orders 1 through 5. Aquatic insects comprised 88 percent of all taxa and 97 percent of all individuals from the Dietrich River. Diptera, especially Chironomidae, was the most abundant, followed by Plecoptera. Diamesinae was abundant at the headwaters, decreasing downstream; Orthocladiinae exhibited the reverse distribution pattern. Diversity of collections generally increased downstream. The station collections were compared using coefficients of similarity, cluster analysis, and taxonomy. Collections from adjacent stations were most similar and similarity decreased with increasing distance. The fauna was tentatively divided into zones with characteristic communities: a Diamesinae-Simuliidae fauna in zone I (stream order 1), zone II, a region of transition (orders 2-4), and an Orthocladiinae-Plecoptera-Ephemeroptera fauna in zone III (order 5). The chemocline extends in depth from 80 to 100 m (meters) and the steepest gradient is between 98 and 100 m. The monimolimnion is anoxic, contains hydrogen sulflde, and has a salinity about two-thirds that of seawater. Turnover appears to introduce additional sodium chloride from the chemocline to the mixolimnion, but diffusion is probably the dominant mixing mechanism. Vertical profiles show a dichothermic temperature curve. A minimum temperature of 3°C in the chemocline is unexplained, but higher temperatures in the monimolimnion may be a result of solar radiation. At the lower limit of the chemocline there is a sharp decrease in pH, which could be due to bacterial action. Redoubt Lake is probably a relict fiord. The data presented herein support the hypothesis that the lake was gradually isolated from the sea by uplift. While seawater was entering the lake, it probably mixed with the freshwater in the mixolimnion and therefore the monimolimnion is less saline than seawater. Geologic and geophysical evidence support the speculation that significant amounts of saltwater inflow probably ceased about 650-800 years before the present.
","language":"English","publisher":"U. Radiometric age determinations on selected metamorphic rocks have helped to identify two major metamorphic events, one in Late Cretaceous time that was characterized by penetrative deformation, and one in the Miocene Epoch that resulted in widespread recrystallization and igneous intrusions. Mapped facies units show many discontinuities across major faults, and their distribution indicates major differential uplift between several structurally bound crustal blocks within a strongly deformed mobile belt west of the Art Lewis fault. Late Cretaceous metamorphic gradients indicate that the blocks have been tilted to the west or northwest parallel to their general structural grain. Results of potassium-argon age determinations combined with field relations, petrography, and major- and trace-element chemistry suggest six major intrusive events: (1) late Paleozoic gabbro to quartz diorite intruded Paleozoic metamorphic rocks that are probably equivalent to the Kaskawulsh Group in adjacent areas of Canada, (2) Triassic quartz diorite formed one small pluton in undated metamorphic rocks near Mt. St. Elias, (3) Jurassic tonalite and granite intruded upper Paleozoic(?) and lower Mesozoic(?) metamorphic rocks, (4) Late Cretaceous or Tertiary altered tonalite formed three widely separated plutons in metasedimentary rocks of Jurassic(?) and Cretaceous age in the Yakutat Group, (5) Eocene granodiorite and granite, and (6) late Cenozoic tonalite and granodiorite intruded both the Yakutat Group and upper Paleozoic(?) and lower Mesozoic(?) metamorphic rocks. The Paleozoic, Jurassic, and Cretaceous or Tertiary plutonic suites are restricted to particular geologic terranes, and the Jurassic and Eocene suites correlate with regional plutonic belts present elsewhere in southern Alaska. The distribution of the Tertiary plutons does not require large-scale horizontal displacements along the Fairweather and other major high-angle faults. The available data indicate that the mineral resource potential of the Yakutat-St. Elias area is low for those deposits that are generally related to magmatic processes.
","language":"English","publisher":"U. At both localities, pillow basalts are interbedded with flysch, and the gabbros intrude both the sheeted dikes and the immediately overlying sedimentary rocks. At the Resurrection Peninsula, small bodies of serpentinized dunite are present in the gabbro, and overlying low-grade metasedimentary rocks and mafic tuffs are interbedded with sedimentary rocks. At Knight Island the sheeted dikes intrude Paleocene and Eocene(?) sedimentary rocks. These igneous rocks have petrographic features similar to those of oceanic tholeiites and have some of the characteristics of ophiolites. They apparently were formed near the continental margin, because both sequences intrude and are interlayered with flysch. The sparsely populated area of the New Hebrides Islands in the southwest Pacific was struck by a major earthquake (one with a magnitude between 7.0 and 7.9). A great earthquake (magnitude 8.0 or above) struck just off the west coast of Mindanao, Philippine Islands, generating a tsunami, killing thousands of people, and causing extensive damage. Three strong earthquakes rocked the Szechwan province of Chian, probably causing loss of life and damage in the epicentral area.
\n
The Untied States again did not expereince any destructive earthquakes.
