Peat cores from both seasonally flooded and drained diked marshes were waterlogged with seawater, and porewater chemistry was subsequently monitored for 21 mo. The addition of seawater to highly organic, seasonally flooded peat caused the death of freshwater wetland plants, 6–8 cm of sediment subsidence, and increased N and P mineralization. Also, sulfides and alkalinity increased 10-fold, suggesting accelerated decomposition by sulfate reduction. Addition of seawater to the low-organic-content acidic peat from the drained marsh increased porewater pH, alkalinity, PO<sub>4</sub>-P, and Fe(II), which we attribute to the reestablishment of SO<sub>4</sub><span>&nbsp;</span>and Fe(III) mineral reduction. Increased cation exchange contributed to 6-fold increases in dissolved Fe(II) and Al and 60-fold increases in NH<sub>4</sub>-N within 6 mo of salination.</p><p>Seawater reintroductions to seasonally flooded diked marshes will cause porewater sulfides to increase, likely reducing the success of revegetation efforts. Sulfide toxicity is of less concern in resalinated drained peats because of the abundance of Fe(II) to precipitate sulfides, and of NH<sub>4</sub>-N to offset sulfide inhibition of N uptake. Restoration of either seasonally flooded or drained diked marshes could stimulate potentially large nutrient and Fe(II) releases, which could in turn increase primary production and lower oxygen in receiving waters. These findings suggest that tidal restoration be gradual and carefully monitored.</p>","language":"English","publisher":"Ecological Society of America","doi":"10.1890/1051-0761(1997)007[1054:BEOSRT]2.0.CO;2","issn":"10510761","usgsCitation":"Portnoy, J.W., and Giblin, A.E., 1997, Biogeochemical effects of seawater restoration to diked salt marshes: Ecological Applications, v. 7, no. 3, p. 1054-1063, https://doi.org/10.1890/1051-0761(1997)007[1054:BEOSRT]2.0.CO;2.","productDescription":"10 p.","startPage":"1054","endPage":"1063","numberOfPages":"10","costCenters":[],"links":[{"id":227929,"rank":1,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/thumbnails/outside_thumb.jpg"}],"country":"United States","state":"Massachusetts","otherGeospatial":"Cape Cod","geographicExtents":"{\n  \"type\": \"FeatureCollection\",\n  \"features\": [\n    {\n      \"type\": \"Feature\",\n      \"properties\": {},\n      \"geometry\": {\n        \"coordinates\": [\n          [\n            [\n              -70.00625323624631,\n              41.80014333107039\n            ],\n            [\n              -69.93935035358108,\n              41.81448468536081\n            ],\n            [\n              -69.93847580609575,\n              41.83110360149334\n            ],\n            [\n              -69.96602405189873,\n              41.91185566219545\n            ],\n            [\n              -69.99532139267322,\n              41.9687765641101\n            ],\n            [\n              -70.07665430885457,\n              41.96227388985136\n            ],\n            [\n              -70.0700952027107,\n              41.90079084962048\n            ],\n            [\n              -70.05216697925155,\n              41.920641059004396\n            ],\n            [\n              -70.03686239824924,\n              41.9294252464191\n            ],\n            [\n              -70.02767964964853,\n              41.91218106882883\n            ],\n            [\n              -70.0132496161324,\n              41.9033945074558\n            ],\n            [\n              -70.00231777256018,\n              41.88907307556468\n            ],\n            [\n              -70.01193779490397,\n              41.87442283488116\n            ],\n            [\n              -70.00712778373165,\n              41.81741774869366\n            ],\n            [\n              -70.00625323624631,\n              41.80014333107039\n            ]\n          ]\n        ],\n        \"type\": \"Polygon\"\n      }\n    }\n  ]\n}","volume":"7","issue":"3","noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"5059f152e4b0c8380cd4abb6","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Portnoy, J. The Navy needs this information to plan and manage cleanup activities on the base. During March and April 1995, 136 water-supply wells were sampled for common ions, trace elements, and organic compounds; not all wells were sampled for all constituents. Man-made organic compounds were detected in only two of fifty wells, and the sources of these organic compounds were attributed to activities in the immediate vicinities of these off-base wells. Drinking water standards for trichloroethylene, iron, and manganese were exceeded in one of these wells, which was probably contaminated by an old local (off-base) dump. </p><p>Ground water from wells open to the following hydrogeologic units (in order from shallow to deep) was investigated: the Vashon till confining unit (Qvt, three wells); the Vashon aquifer (Qva, 54 wells); the Upper confining unit (QC1, 16 wells); the Permeable interbeds within QC1 (QC1pi, 34 wells); and the Sea-level aquifer (QA1, 29 wells).The 50th and 90th percentile ambient background levels of 35 inorganic constituents were determined for each hydrogeologic unit. At least ten measurements were required for a constituent in each hydrogeologic unit for determination of ambient background levels, and data for three wells determined to be affected by localized activities were excluded from these analyses. </p><p>The only drinking water standards exceeded by ambient background levels were secondary maximum contaminant levels for iron (300 micrograms per liter), in QC1 and QC1pi, and manganese (50 micrograms per liter), in all of the units. The 90th percentile values for arsenic in QC1pi, QA1, and for the entire study area are above 5 micrograms per liter, the Model Toxics Control Act Method A value for protecting drinking water, but well below the maximum contaminant level of 50 micrograms per liter for arsenic. </p><p>The manganese standard was exceeded in 38 wells and the standard for iron was exceeded in 12 wells. Most of these wells were in QC1 or QC1pi and had dissolved oxygen concentrations of less than 1 milligram per liter and dissolved organic carbon concentrations greater than 1 milligram per liter. The dissolved oxygen concentration is generally lower in the deeper units, while pH increases; the recommended pH range of 6.5-8.5 standard units was exceeded in 9 wells. The common-ion chemistry was similar for all of the units.</p>","language":"English","publisher":"U.S. Geological Survey","doi":"10.3133/wri964309","usgsCitation":"Greene, K.E., 1997, Ambient quality of ground water in the vicinity of Naval Submarine Base Bangor, Kitsap County, Washington, 1995: U.S. Geological Survey Water-Resources Investigations Report 96-4309, iv, 46 p., https://doi.org/10.3133/wri964309.","productDescription":"iv, 46 p.","costCenters":[],"links":[{"id":415371,"rank":3,"type":{"id":36,"text":"NGMDB Index Page"},"url":"https://ngmdb.usgs.gov/Prodesc/proddesc_49274.htm","linkFileType":{"id":5,"text":"html"}},{"id":56273,"rank":2,"type":{"id":11,"text":"Document"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/wri/1996/4309/report.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":125071,"rank":1,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/wri/1996/4309/report-thumb.jpg"}],"country":"United States","state":"Washington","county":"Kitsap County","otherGeospatial":"Naval Submarine Base Bangor","geographicExtents":"{\n  \"type\": \"FeatureCollection\",\n  \"features\": [\n    {\n      \"type\": \"Feature\",\n      \"properties\": {},\n      \"geometry\": {\n        \"coordinates\": [\n          [\n            [\n              -122.8069,\n              47.8258\n            ],\n            [\n              -122.8069,\n              47.6222\n            ],\n            [\n              -122.5833,\n              47.6222\n            ],\n            [\n              -122.5833,\n              47.8258\n            ],\n            [\n              -122.8069,\n              47.8258\n            ]\n          ]\n        ],\n        \"type\": \"Polygon\"\n      }\n    }\n  ]\n}","noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e4adce4b07f02db686976","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Greene, Karen E.","contributorId":16870,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Greene","given":"Karen","email":"","middleInitial":"E.","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":198075,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1}]}}

Analytes were extracted from the water using three aliquots of dichloromethane. The aliquots were combined and reduced in volume by rotary evaporation followed by evaporation using a nitrogen stream. The extracts were analyzed by capillary-column gas chromatography/mass spectrometry in the full-scan mode. Estimated method detection limits were 30 nanograms per liter for 2-bromoallyl alcohol and 10 nanograms per liter for 2,3-dibromopropene. Recoveries were determined by spiking three matrices at two concentration levels (0.540 and 5.40 micrograms per liter for 2-bromoallyl alcohol; and 0.534 and 5.34micro-grams per liter for dibromopropene). For seven replicates of each matrix at the high concentration level, the mean percent recoveries ranged from 43.9 to 64.9 percent for 2-bromoallyl alcohol, and from 87.5 to 99.3 percent for dibromopropene. At the low concentration level, the mean percent recoveries ranged from 43.8 to 95.2 percent for 2-bromoallyl alcohol, and from 71.3 to 84.9 percent for dibromopropene.","language":"ENGLISH","publisher":"U.S. Geological Survey ;\r\nBranch of Information Services [distributor],","doi":"10.3133/ofr9743","issn":"0094-9140","usgsCitation":"Panshin, S.Y., 1997, Determining concentrations of 2-bromoallyl alcohol and dibromopropene in ground water using quantitative methods: U.S. Geological Survey Open-File Report 97-43, iv, 7 p. :ill. ;28 cm., https://doi.org/10.3133/ofr9743.","productDescription":"iv, 7 p. :ill. ;28 cm.","costCenters":[],"links":[{"id":157485,"rank":0,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1997/0043/report-thumb.jpg"},{"id":53280,"rank":300,"type":{"id":11,"text":"Document"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1997/0043/report.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}}],"noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e4aa8e4b07f02db667458","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Panshin, Sandra Y.","contributorId":46126,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Panshin","given":"Sandra","email":"","middleInitial":"Y.","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":191363,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1}]}}

Five distinct ground-water basins drained by major  karst springs are present in the Elizabethtown area. These basins are  composed of networks of hydraulically interconnected solution conduits  and fractures. The boundaries of the basins for Elizabethtown and Dyers  Springs-the primary sources of water for the city of Elizabethtown-weredelineated by the positions of inferred ground-water divides on an  existing potentiometric contour map. The results of dye-tracing tests,  plotted as straight- line flowpaths, were used to confirm the presence and  location of inferred ground-water divides and to adjust the position of  the basin boundaries. Recharge areas of 4.8 and 2.7 square miles weredelineated for Elizabethtown and Dyers Springs, respectively. Swallets  that drain concentrated stormwater runoff from major highways are presentin the recharge areas for both municipal-supply springs. Each spring is  therefore potentially vulnerable to stormwater-runoff contaminants oraccidental spills and releases of toxic or hazardous materials into  certain highway drainage culverts.","language":"ENGLISH","publisher":"U.S. Geological Survey ;\r\nInformation Services [distributor],","doi":"10.3133/wri964254","usgsCitation":"Taylor, C., 1997, Delineation of ground-water basins and recharge areas for municipal water-supply springs in a karst aquifer system in the Elizabethtown area, northern Kentucky: U.S. Geological Survey Water-Resources Investigations Report 96-4254, iv, 22 p. :ill., maps (some col.) ;28 cm., https://doi.org/10.3133/wri964254.","productDescription":"iv, 22 p. :ill., maps (some col.) ;28 cm.","costCenters":[],"links":[{"id":124958,"rank":0,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/wri/1996/4254/report-thumb.jpg"},{"id":58879,"rank":300,"type":{"id":11,"text":"Document"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/wri/1996/4254/report.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}}],"noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e4ab3e4b07f02db66fd42","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Taylor, C.J.","contributorId":22337,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Taylor","given":"C.J.","email":"","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":202621,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1}]}}

Often, the investigator decides to reduce the cost of creating a vegetation map by increasing the minimum mapping unit (MMU), and/or by reducing the number of vegetation classes to be considered. Questions arise about what information is sacrificed when map resolution is decreased. We compared plant diversity patterns from vegetation maps made with 100-ha, 50-ha, 2-ha, and 0.02-ha MMUs in a 754-ha study area in Rocky Mountain National Park, Colorado, United States, using four 0.025-ha and 21 0.1-ha multiscale vegetation plots. We developed and tested species–log(area) curves, correcting the curves for within-vegetation type heterogeneity with Jaccard’s coefficients. Total species richness in the study area was estimated from vegetation maps at each resolution (MMU), based on the corrected species–area curves, total area of the vegetation type, and species overlap among vegetation types. With the 0.02-ha MMU, six vegetation types were recovered, resulting in an estimated 552 species (95%&nbsp;</span><span class=\"smallCaps\">ci</span><span>&nbsp;= 520–583 species) in the 754-ha study area (330 plant species were observed in the 25 plots). With the 2-ha MMU, five vegetation types were recognized, resulting in an estimated 473 species for the study area. With the 50-ha MMU, 439 plant species were estimated for the four vegetation types recognized in the study area. With the 100-ha MMU, only three vegetation types were recognized, resulting in an estimated 341 plant species for the study area. Locally rare species and keystone ecosystems (areas of high or unique plant diversity) were missed at the 2-ha, 50-ha, and 100-ha scales. To evaluate the effects of minimum mapping unit size requires: (1) an initial stratification of homogeneous, heterogeneous, and rare habitat types; and (2) an evaluation of within-type and between-type heterogeneity generated by environmental gradients and other factors. We suggest that at least some portions of vegetation maps created at a coarser level of resolution be validated at a higher level of resolution.</span></p>","language":"English","publisher":"Ecological Society of America","doi":"10.1890/1051-0761(1997)007[1064:MSOPDE]2.0.CO;2","issn":"10510761","usgsCitation":"Stohlgren, T.J., Chong, G.W., Kalkhan, M.A., and Schell, L.D., 1997, Multiscale sampling of plant diversity: Effects of minimum mapping unit size: Ecological Applications, v. 7, no. 3, p. 1064-1074, https://doi.org/10.1890/1051-0761(1997)007[1064:MSOPDE]2.0.CO;2.","productDescription":"11 p.","startPage":"1064","endPage":"1074","numberOfPages":"11","costCenters":[],"links":[{"id":228281,"rank":1,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/thumbnails/outside_thumb.jpg"}],"volume":"7","issue":"3","noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"505a609be4b0c8380cd7158b","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Stohlgren, Thomas J.","contributorId":213895,"corporation":false,"usgs":false,"family":"Stohlgren","given":"Thomas","email":"","middleInitial":"J.","affiliations":[{"id":38925,"text":"Natural Resource Ecology Laboratory, Colorado State University, Fort Collins","active":true,"usgs":false}],"preferred":false,"id":383256,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1},{"text":"Chong, Geneva W. 0000-0003-3883-5153 geneva_chong@usgs.gov","orcid":"https://orcid.org/0000-0003-3883-5153","contributorId":419,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Chong","given":"Geneva","email":"geneva_chong@usgs.gov","middleInitial":"W.","affiliations":[{"id":481,"text":"Northern Rocky Mountain Science Center","active":true,"usgs":true}],"preferred":true,"id":383257,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":2},{"text":"Kalkhan, M. Our detailed structural analysis in the Gavilan Hills area provides new evidence to confirm the latter view. A zone of deformation is present at the top of the Orocopia Schist in which lineations are parallel to those in the upper plate of the Chocolate Mountains fault but oblique to ones at relatively deep levels in the schist. Both the Orocopia Schist and upper plate contain several generations of shear zones that show a transition from crystalloblastic through mylonitic to cataclastic textures. These structures formed during retrograde metamorphism and are considered to record the exhumation of the Orocopia Schist during early Tertiary time as a result of subduction return flow. The Gatuna fault, which places low-grade, supracrustal metasediments of the Winterhaven Formation above the gneisses of the upper plate, also seems to have been active at this time. Final unroofing of the Orocopia Schist occurred during early to middle Miocene regional extension and may have involved a second phase of movement on the Gatuna fault. Formation of the Chocolate Mountains fault during exhumation indicates that its top-to-the-NE sense of movement provides no constraint on the polarity of the Orocopia Schist subduction zone. This weakens the case for a previous model involving SW dipping subduction, while providing support for the view that the Orocopia Schist is a correlative of the Franciscan Complex.</span></p>","language":"English","publisher":"American Geophysical Union","doi":"10.1029/97TC01415","issn":"02787407","usgsCitation":"Oyarzabal, F., Jacobson, C., and Haxel, G.B., 1997, Extensional reactivation of the Chocolate Mountains subduction thrust in the Gavilan Hills of southeastern California: Tectonics, v. 16, no. 4, p. 650-661, https://doi.org/10.1029/97TC01415.","productDescription":"12 p.","startPage":"650","endPage":"661","costCenters":[],"links":[{"id":495386,"rank":2,"type":{"id":40,"text":"Open Access Publisher Index Page"},"url":"https://doi.org/10.1029/97tc01415","text":"Publisher Index Page"},{"id":227837,"rank":1,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/thumbnails/outside_thumb.jpg"}],"country":"United States","state":"California","otherGeospatial":"southern California","geographicExtents":"{\n  \"type\": \"FeatureCollection\",\n  \"features\": [\n    {\n      \"type\": \"Feature\",\n      \"properties\": {},\n      \"geometry\": {\n        \"coordinates\": [\n          [\n            [\n              -120.43316262079014,\n              35.380649853336976\n            ],\n            [\n              -120.43316262079014,\n              32.79760076456954\n            ],\n            [\n              -115.12226961941393,\n              32.79760076456954\n            ],\n            [\n              -115.12226961941393,\n              35.380649853336976\n            ],\n            [\n              -120.43316262079014,\n              35.380649853336976\n            ]\n          ]\n        ],\n        \"type\": \"Polygon\"\n      }\n    }\n  ]\n}","volume":"16","issue":"4","noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"505a0e45e4b0c8380cd53398","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Oyarzabal, F.R.","contributorId":77306,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Oyarzabal","given":"F.R.","email":"","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":383436,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1},{"text":"Jacobson, C.E.","contributorId":46234,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Jacobson","given":"C.E.","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":383434,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":2},{"text":"Haxel, Gordon B. 0000-0002-6722-7803 gbhaxel@usgs.gov","orcid":"https://orcid.org/0000-0002-6722-7803","contributorId":261783,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Haxel","given":"Gordon","email":"gbhaxel@usgs.gov","middleInitial":"B.","affiliations":[{"id":312,"text":"Geology, Minerals, Energy, and Geophysics Science Center","active":true,"usgs":true}],"preferred":true,"id":383435,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":3}]}}
