Analyses indicate that the lake is oligotrophic, having low dissolved solids and nutrient concentrations. Snowmelt runoff from an adjacent residential area, however, has a dissolved-solids concentration 10 times that of the main body of Sand Lake. Lead concentrations in the runoff exceed known values from other water in the ANchorage area, including water samples taken beneath landfills. The volume of the snowmelt runoff has not been measured. The data presented can be used as a baseline for water-resource management. The compilation thus represents nearly three times as much land data and ten times as much marine data as were available for one previous Alaskan gravity map (Barnes, 1969b) and fiftyfold increase since the original compilation of Alaskan land gravity data (Wollard and others, 1960). However, data from many parts of the state are still too scattered (inset 1) for accurate contouring; such deficiencies are most serious in the southwestern part of the state and in the Bering Sea.</p><p>The map shows the variation of the simple Bouguer anomaly field and is thus comparable to the existing Bouguer gravity map of the conterminous 48 states (Wollard and Joesting, 1964). On land the Bouguer anomaly contours reflect the regional variations of gravity better than free-air anomaly contours, which are not adequately corrected for topography. However, in oceanic areas the free-air anomaly is less sensitive to bottom topography than the Bouguer anomaly. Accordingly, the map coverage includes available data from the continental shelves where the bottom relief is small, but it has not been extended to cover the continental slope, the deep ocean, or the islands of the Aleutian arc, where the free-air anomaly would be a better indicator of the regional variation of gravity, and where Bouguer gravity are only available for a few small areas (Miller and Copper is the dominant mineral commodity, both historically and in terms of potential future production. Gold and silver are the only other metals that have been produced. The metalliferous deposits are concentrated in a northwest-trending belt along the southern flank of the Wrangell Mountains, and, to a lesser extent, in a similar belt along the northeast flank of the range. Both belts have upper Paleozoic (Skolai Group) basements, abundant Mesozoic rocks, and some Tertiary intrusive rocks. They are marked by numerous faults, mainly northwest-striking. Mineral deposits are uncommon elsewhere in the quadrangle, especially in large tracks underlain by Wrangell Lava and in smaller areas underlain by the Kaskawulsh Group of Kindle (1953). Both the Wrangell Lava and the Kaskawulsh underlie rugged mountainous regions with extensive snow and ice cover, and could conceivably contain undetected concealed deposits.&nbsp;</p><p>The metallic, nonmetallic, and energy resources of the quadrangle are described sequentially. Copper, gold, and silver, because of their importance, are described early in the section on metal commodities; descriptions of the other metals follows in alphabetic sequence. The geochemical data are plotted on a base map that shows generalized geology and the drainage pattern. The map symbols show the sample sites and ranges of values in the following manner: (1) open symbols denote background, (2) small black symbols represent weakly anomalous values, and (3) large black symbols denotes strongly anomalous values. Because the small black symbols represent weakly anomalous values, they are considered to be significant only where they are closely associated with strongly anomalous metal values either in the same sample medium or with anomalous values in other sample media. The ranges of values represented by the symbols are shown on the histograms that accompany the geochemical maps. An explanation of sampling, preparation, and analytical procedures is given in Circular 734, which accompanies this folio.
