All selected areas lie within a miogeoclinal belt where thick accumulations of carbonate rock followed by major episodes of compression and extension have greatly modified the region. Most of the selected hydrographic areas lie within the less extended terranes; however, several areas, or parts of areas, lie within severely extended terranes where carbonate rocks have been greatly thinned, or where deformed blocks of carbonate rock are discontinuous and isolated from surrounding carbonate rock aquifers. Three principal criteria were used to assess the development potential of each selected hydrographic area. These quantitative criteria are: (1) depth to water, (2) depth to and thickness of carbonate rocks, and (3) water quality. Other site-specific factors, such as accessibility and potential effects of ground-water development, are also discussed. Results suggest that sites with high potential for development may be scarce in southern Nevada. Many areas described as favorable on the basis of the three quantitative criteria were deemed unfavorable on the basis of possible short- and long-term effects associated with development and on the amount of available data used to make the assessment. The most favorable sites may be in more severely extended terranes, where development of isolated blocks (of carbonate-rock aquifer material) would be less likely to affect neighboring areas.","language":"English","publisher":"U.S. Geological Survey","doi":"10.3133/wri954168","usgsCitation":"Burbey, T., 1997, Hydrogeology and potential for ground-water development, carbonate-rock aquifers, southern Nevada and southeastern California: U.S. Geological Survey Water-Resources Investigations Report 95-4168, v, 65 p., https://doi.org/10.3133/wri954168.","productDescription":"v, 65 p.","costCenters":[],"links":[{"id":55195,"rank":300,"type":{"id":11,"text":"Document"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/wri/1995/4168/report.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":123682,"rank":0,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/wri/1995/4168/report-thumb.jpg"},{"id":395394,"rank":3,"type":{"id":36,"text":"NGMDB Index Page"},"url":"https://ngmdb.usgs.gov/Prodesc/proddesc_48263.htm"}],"country":"United States","state":"California, Nevada","geographicExtents":"{\n  \"type\": \"FeatureCollection\",\n  \"features\": [\n    {\n      \"type\": \"Feature\",\n      \"properties\": {},\n      \"geometry\": {\n        \"type\": \"Polygon\",\n        \"coordinates\": [\n          [\n            [\n              -117.05,\n              35.5667\n            ],\n            [\n              -114.3333,\n              35.5667\n            ],\n            [\n              -114.3333,\n              37.7278\n            ],\n            [\n              -117.05,\n              37.7278\n            ],\n            [\n              -117.05,\n              35.5667\n            ]\n          ]\n        ]\n      }\n    }\n  ]\n}","noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e4adbe4b07f02db685a2b","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Burbey, T. The long-term goals of the NAWQA Program are to describe the status and trends in the quality of a large, representative part of the Nation's surface- and ground- water resources, and to identify, describe, and explain, if possible, the major factors that affect the observed water quality (Hirsch and others, 1988). The program consists of study-unit investigations that include parts of most major river basins and aquifer systems in the country. Simulations of May 1993 conditions indicate that well pumping decreased  simulated streamflow in the Big Blue and Kansas Rivers by 5.28 ft3/s  (cubic feet per second) for the month, of which 3.22 ft3/s were  contributed from the streams (induced infiltration) and 2.06 ft3/s werecontributed from ground water that would have seeped to the streams if  the wells had not been pumping (intercepted base flow).  Of the total 414acre-feet pumped by municipal wells during May 1993, about 48 percent was  from induced infiltration, and about 31 percent was from intercepted base  flow.  Simulations of October 16 through November 14, 1994, conditions  indicate that well pumping decreased simulated streamflow in the Big Blue  and Kansas Rivers by 6.67 ft3/s for the period, of which 6.51 ft3/s was  from induced infiltration and 0.61 ft3/s was from intercepted base flow.   Of the 506 acre-feet pumped by municipal wells during October 16 through  November 14, 1994, about 76 percent was induced from infiltration, and  about 2 percent was from intercepted base flow.  Steady-state simulations  of hypothetical conditions were conducted to develop relations among  average and minimum ground- water altitudes in the Manhattan municipal  well field and precipitation, pumping, and streamflow rates.","language":"ENGLISH","publisher":"U.S. Geological Survey ;\r\nU.S. Geological Survey, Branch of Information Services [distributor],","doi":"10.3133/wri964290","usgsCitation":"Jian, X., Myers, N.C., and Hargadine, G., 1997, Effects of pumping municipal wells at Manhattan, Kansas, on streamflow in the Big Blue and Kansas Rivers, Northeast Kansas, 1992-94: U.S. Geological Survey Water-Resources Investigations Report 96-4290, viii, 62 p. :ill., maps ;28 cm., https://doi.org/10.3133/wri964290.","productDescription":"viii, 62 p. :ill., maps ;28 cm.","costCenters":[],"links":[{"id":122918,"rank":0,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/wri/1996/4290/report-thumb.jpg"},{"id":56710,"rank":300,"type":{"id":11,"text":"Document"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/wri/1996/4290/report.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}}],"noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e4a29e4b07f02db6119f6","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Jian, Xiaodong 0000-0002-9173-3482 xjian@usgs.gov","orcid":"https://orcid.org/0000-0002-9173-3482","contributorId":1282,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Jian","given":"Xiaodong","email":"xjian@usgs.gov","affiliations":[{"id":353,"text":"Kansas Water Science Center","active":false,"usgs":true},{"id":502,"text":"Office of Surface Water","active":true,"usgs":true}],"preferred":true,"id":198854,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1},{"text":"Myers, N. Peat cores from both seasonally flooded and drained diked marshes were waterlogged with seawater, and porewater chemistry was subsequently monitored for 21 mo. The addition of seawater to highly organic, seasonally flooded peat caused the death of freshwater wetland plants, 6–8 cm of sediment subsidence, and increased N and P mineralization. Also, sulfides and alkalinity increased 10-fold, suggesting accelerated decomposition by sulfate reduction. Addition of seawater to the low-organic-content acidic peat from the drained marsh increased porewater pH, alkalinity, PO<sub>4</sub>-P, and Fe(II), which we attribute to the reestablishment of SO<sub>4</sub><span>&nbsp;</span>and Fe(III) mineral reduction. Increased cation exchange contributed to 6-fold increases in dissolved Fe(II) and Al and 60-fold increases in NH<sub>4</sub>-N within 6 mo of salination.</p><p>Seawater reintroductions to seasonally flooded diked marshes will cause porewater sulfides to increase, likely reducing the success of revegetation efforts. Sulfide toxicity is of less concern in resalinated drained peats because of the abundance of Fe(II) to precipitate sulfides, and of NH<sub>4</sub>-N to offset sulfide inhibition of N uptake. Restoration of either seasonally flooded or drained diked marshes could stimulate potentially large nutrient and Fe(II) releases, which could in turn increase primary production and lower oxygen in receiving waters. These findings suggest that tidal restoration be gradual and carefully monitored.</p>","language":"English","publisher":"Ecological Society of America","doi":"10.1890/1051-0761(1997)007[1054:BEOSRT]2.0.CO;2","issn":"10510761","usgsCitation":"Portnoy, J.W., and Giblin, A.E., 1997, Biogeochemical effects of seawater restoration to diked salt marshes: Ecological Applications, v. 7, no. 3, p. 1054-1063, https://doi.org/10.1890/1051-0761(1997)007[1054:BEOSRT]2.0.CO;2.","productDescription":"10 p.","startPage":"1054","endPage":"1063","numberOfPages":"10","costCenters":[],"links":[{"id":227929,"rank":1,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/thumbnails/outside_thumb.jpg"}],"country":"United States","state":"Massachusetts","otherGeospatial":"Cape Cod","geographicExtents":"{\n  \"type\": \"FeatureCollection\",\n  \"features\": [\n    {\n      \"type\": \"Feature\",\n      \"properties\": {},\n      \"geometry\": {\n        \"coordinates\": [\n          [\n            [\n              -70.00625323624631,\n              41.80014333107039\n            ],\n            [\n              -69.93935035358108,\n              41.81448468536081\n            ],\n            [\n              -69.93847580609575,\n              41.83110360149334\n            ],\n            [\n              -69.96602405189873,\n              41.91185566219545\n            ],\n            [\n              -69.99532139267322,\n              41.9687765641101\n            ],\n            [\n              -70.07665430885457,\n              41.96227388985136\n            ],\n            [\n              -70.0700952027107,\n              41.90079084962048\n            ],\n            [\n              -70.05216697925155,\n              41.920641059004396\n            ],\n            [\n              -70.03686239824924,\n              41.9294252464191\n            ],\n            [\n              -70.02767964964853,\n              41.91218106882883\n            ],\n            [\n              -70.0132496161324,\n              41.9033945074558\n            ],\n            [\n              -70.00231777256018,\n              41.88907307556468\n            ],\n            [\n              -70.01193779490397,\n              41.87442283488116\n            ],\n            [\n              -70.00712778373165,\n              41.81741774869366\n            ],\n            [\n              -70.00625323624631,\n              41.80014333107039\n            ]\n          ]\n        ],\n        \"type\": \"Polygon\"\n      }\n    }\n  ]\n}","volume":"7","issue":"3","noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"5059f152e4b0c8380cd4abb6","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Portnoy, J. The Navy needs this information to plan and manage cleanup activities on the base. During March and April 1995, 136 water-supply wells were sampled for common ions, trace elements, and organic compounds; not all wells were sampled for all constituents. Man-made organic compounds were detected in only two of fifty wells, and the sources of these organic compounds were attributed to activities in the immediate vicinities of these off-base wells. Drinking water standards for trichloroethylene, iron, and manganese were exceeded in one of these wells, which was probably contaminated by an old local (off-base) dump. </p><p>Ground water from wells open to the following hydrogeologic units (in order from shallow to deep) was investigated: the Vashon till confining unit (Qvt, three wells); the Vashon aquifer (Qva, 54 wells); the Upper confining unit (QC1, 16 wells); the Permeable interbeds within QC1 (QC1pi, 34 wells); and the Sea-level aquifer (QA1, 29 wells).The 50th and 90th percentile ambient background levels of 35 inorganic constituents were determined for each hydrogeologic unit. At least ten measurements were required for a constituent in each hydrogeologic unit for determination of ambient background levels, and data for three wells determined to be affected by localized activities were excluded from these analyses. </p><p>The only drinking water standards exceeded by ambient background levels were secondary maximum contaminant levels for iron (300 micrograms per liter), in QC1 and QC1pi, and manganese (50 micrograms per liter), in all of the units. The 90th percentile values for arsenic in QC1pi, QA1, and for the entire study area are above 5 micrograms per liter, the Model Toxics Control Act Method A value for protecting drinking water, but well below the maximum contaminant level of 50 micrograms per liter for arsenic. </p><p>The manganese standard was exceeded in 38 wells and the standard for iron was exceeded in 12 wells. Most of these wells were in QC1 or QC1pi and had dissolved oxygen concentrations of less than 1 milligram per liter and dissolved organic carbon concentrations greater than 1 milligram per liter. The dissolved oxygen concentration is generally lower in the deeper units, while pH increases; the recommended pH range of 6.5-8.5 standard units was exceeded in 9 wells. The common-ion chemistry was similar for all of the units.</p>","language":"English","publisher":"U.S. Geological Survey","doi":"10.3133/wri964309","usgsCitation":"Greene, K.E., 1997, Ambient quality of ground water in the vicinity of Naval Submarine Base Bangor, Kitsap County, Washington, 1995: U.S. Geological Survey Water-Resources Investigations Report 96-4309, iv, 46 p., https://doi.org/10.3133/wri964309.","productDescription":"iv, 46 p.","costCenters":[],"links":[{"id":415371,"rank":3,"type":{"id":36,"text":"NGMDB Index Page"},"url":"https://ngmdb.usgs.gov/Prodesc/proddesc_49274.htm","linkFileType":{"id":5,"text":"html"}},{"id":56273,"rank":2,"type":{"id":11,"text":"Document"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/wri/1996/4309/report.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":125071,"rank":1,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/wri/1996/4309/report-thumb.jpg"}],"country":"United States","state":"Washington","county":"Kitsap County","otherGeospatial":"Naval Submarine Base Bangor","geographicExtents":"{\n  \"type\": \"FeatureCollection\",\n  \"features\": [\n    {\n      \"type\": \"Feature\",\n      \"properties\": {},\n      \"geometry\": {\n        \"coordinates\": [\n          [\n            [\n              -122.8069,\n              47.8258\n            ],\n            [\n              -122.8069,\n              47.6222\n            ],\n            [\n              -122.5833,\n              47.6222\n            ],\n            [\n              -122.5833,\n              47.8258\n            ],\n            [\n              -122.8069,\n              47.8258\n            ]\n          ]\n        ],\n        \"type\": \"Polygon\"\n      }\n    }\n  ]\n}","noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e4adce4b07f02db686976","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Greene, Karen E.","contributorId":16870,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Greene","given":"Karen","email":"","middleInitial":"E.","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":198075,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1}]}}

The purpose was to document salt scarring, erosion, and soil and water salinization, to survey for radioactivity in oilfield equipment, and to determine if trace elements and naturally occurring radioactive materials (NORM) were present in soils affected by oilfield solid waste and produced waters. These surveys were also designed to see if field gamma spectrometry and field soil conductivity measurements were useful in screening for NORM contamination and soil salinity at these sites.\r\nVisits to oilfield production sites in the Wildhorse field in June of 1995 and 1996 confirmed the presence of substantial salt scarring, soil salinization, and slight to locally severe erosion. Levels of radioactivity on some oil field equipment, soils, and road surfaces exceed proposed state standards. Radium activities in soils affected by tank sludge and produced waters also locally exceed proposed state standards. Laboratory analyses of samples from two sites show moderate levels of copper, lead, and zinc in brine-affected soils and pipe scale. Several sites showed detectable levels of bromine and iodine, suggesting that these trace elements may be present in sufficient quantity to inhibit plant growth. Surface waters in streams at two sampled sites exceed total dissolved solid limits for drinking waters. At one site in the Wildhorse field, an EM survey showed that saline soils in the upper 6m extend from a surface salt scar downvalley about 150 m.\r\n(Photo [95k]: Dead oak trees and partly revegetated salt scar at Site OS95-2 in the Wildhorse field, Osage County, Oklahoma.)\r\n\r\nIn the Burbank field, limited salt scarring and slight erosion occurs in soils at some sites and low to moderate levels of radioactivity were observed in oil field equipment at some sites.\r\nThe levels of radioactivity and radium observed in some soils and equipment at these sites are above levels of concern as defined in regulations proposed by the Conference of Radiation Control Program Directors. The volumes of material involved appear to be relatively small for most sites. The lead levels observed in soils affected by tank sludge wastes are about one half of the US Environmental Protection Agency (USEPA) interim remedial action levels used for Comprehensive Environmental Response, Compensation, and Liability Act (CERCLA) and Resource Conservation and Recovery Act (RCRA) sites (400 ppm).\r\nField gamma spectrometry proved useful in delineating areas where radium has been added to the natural soil by oilfield solid waste and produced water, although the technique does not meet standards of assessment used in the state of Louisiana which require core sampling of 15 cm intervals and radiochemical analysis in the laboratory. An examination of historical temperature data in relation to spring season landslide occurrences reveals an association between the landslide events and intervals of rising temperatures that accelerate the production of snow meltwater. Historical climatic data recorded at local weather stations located near the landslide sites are used to show the association and to identify a temperature threshold that may be useful for forecasting the onset of spring season landslides. Historical daily temperature maximums and minimums for unmonitored landslide sites are estimated by applying an elevation correction factor to historical temperature data from nearby weather stations. The proposed temperature threshold (a 6-day moving average of daily maximum temperature of 58? F) is defined by the number and temporal distribution of snowmelt related landslide events. The results of the study suggest that real-time temperature data recorded at weather stations throughout the Rocky Mountain region is potentially a valuable source of information that may be useful for forecasting the onset of spring season landslides.","language":"ENGLISH","publisher":"U.S. Geological Survey,","doi":"10.3133/ofr9727","issn":"0094-9140","usgsCitation":"Chleborad, A.F., 1997, Temperature, snowmelt, and the onset of spring season landslides in the central Rocky Mountains (Online only, Version 1.0): U.S. Geological Survey Open-File Report 97-27, 35 p. :ill., maps ;28 cm., https://doi.org/10.3133/ofr9727.","productDescription":"35 p. :ill., maps ;28 cm.","onlineOnly":"Y","costCenters":[],"links":[{"id":1453,"rank":100,"type":{"id":15,"text":"Index Page"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1997/027/","linkFileType":{"id":5,"text":"html"}},{"id":155413,"rank":0,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1997/0027/report-thumb.jpg"},{"id":52163,"rank":300,"type":{"id":11,"text":"Document"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1997/0027/report.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}}],"edition":"Online only, Version 1.0","noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e4adae4b07f02db6856fa","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Chleborad, Alan F.","contributorId":87578,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Chleborad","given":"Alan","email":"","middleInitial":"F.","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":188723,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1}]}}

In the study area in the North Cascades, Washington state, the RLFZ accommodated significant pre-middle Eocene vertical displacement, and it juxtaposes the Skymo complex with upper amphibolite facies (650°–690°C and 6–7 kbar) Skagit Gneiss of the North Cascades crystalline core to the SW and andalusite-bearing phyllite of the Little Jack terrane (Intermontane superterrane) to the NE. The two main lithologic units of the Skymo complex, a primitive mafic intrusion and a fault-bounded block of granulite facies metasedimentary rocks, are unique in the North Cascades. Granulite facies conditions were attained during high-temperature (&gt; 800°C), low pressure (≤ 4 kbar) contact metamorphism associated with intrusion of the mafic magma. P-T estimates and reaction textures in garnet-orthopyroxene gneiss suggest that contact metamorphism followed earlier, higher pressure regional metamorphism. There is no evidence that the Skagit Gneiss experienced high-T - low-P contact metamorphism. In the Little Jack terrane, however, texturally late cordierite ± spinel and partial replacement of andalusite by sillimanite near the terrane's fault contact with Skymo gabbro suggest that the Little Jack terrane experienced high-T (∼ 600°C) - low-P (≤ 4 kbar) contact metamorphism following earlier low-grade regional metamorphism. Similarities in the protoliths of metasedimentary rocks in the Skymo and Little Jack indicate that they may be part of the same terrane. Differences in pressure estimates for the Little Jack versus Skymo for regional metamorphism that preceded contact metamorphism indicate vertical displacement of ∼ 10 km (west side up) on the strand of the RLFZ that now separates the two structural blocks. High-angle faults in the study area are dextral-reverse mylonitic shear zones that experienced later brittle normal slip. Vertical motion on these shear zones before intrusion of Skymo gabbro can account for metamorphic discontinuities indicated by P-T results. The terranes have also been internally deformed by nonintersecting but coeval dextral and sinistral shear zones that formed after the terranes were brought together in the RLFZ and intruded by Eocene dikes. These results show that the RLFZ has accommodated significant vertical displacement but perhaps no more than tens of kilometers of early Tertiary lateral movement. Structural evidence for earlier, large-magnitude strike-slip displacement is not preserved.</span></p>","language":"English","publisher":"American Geophysical Union","doi":"10.1029/97TC01476","issn":"02787407","usgsCitation":"Baldwin, J.A., Whitney, D., and Hurlow, H.A., 1997, Metamorphic and structural evidence for significant vertical displacement along the Ross Lake fault zone, a major orogen-parallel shear zone in the Cordillera of western North America: Tectonics, v. 16, no. 4, p. 662-681, https://doi.org/10.1029/97TC01476.","productDescription":"20 p.","startPage":"662","endPage":"681","costCenters":[],"links":[{"id":228200,"rank":1,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/thumbnails/outside_thumb.jpg"}],"country":"Canada, United States","state":"Washington","geographicExtents":"{\n \"type\": \"FeatureCollection\",\n \"features\": [\n {\n \"type\": \"Feature\",\n \"properties\": {},\n \"geometry\": {\n \"coordinates\": [\n [\n [\n -123.46922965835495,\n 50.76918202691809\n ],\n [\n -121.44379274758853,\n 47.267715406304404\n ],\n [\n -119.49808890741883,\n 47.478485613308834\n ],\n [\n -121.1310608253014,\n 51.14579263876328\n ],\n [\n -123.46922965835495,\n 50.76918202691809\n ]\n ]\n ],\n \"type\": \"Polygon\"\n }\n }\n ]\n}","volume":"16","issue":"4","noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"505a54fae4b0c8380cd6d0bd","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Baldwin, J.
