The data include concentrations of major inorganic constituents, nutrients, selected trace metals, total organic carbon, and chlorophyll. Vertical profiles of specific conductance, temperature, dissolved-oxygen saturation, and pH were drawn. With the exception of Redoubt Lake, all of the lakes are very similar chemically. The small differences in chemical composition probably reflect variations in geology of the drainage basins, altitudes, and morphometric characteristics of the lakes. Productivity is so low in all the lakes that it was not possible to rank the lakes by relative productivity from the reconnaissance sampling. Redoubt Lake is meromictic, but the others are probably holomictic and dimictic. No surface evidence was found to indicate that any of the faults have been active in Holocene time. The sparse shallow seismicity thus far recorded does not correlate with known faults, nor does it define linear trends suggestive of faulting. Tidal flats at the mouths of the Kenai, Kasilof, and Chickaloon Rivers have been uplifted in the Holocene, however, and the uplift may reflect growing anticlines at depth. Some faults associated with folding may be active, but they are probably too limited in size to generate destructive earthquakes. They could, however, constitute a hazard to manmade structures in their immediate vicinity.</p><p>Vibrational damage and ground failure during the 1964 earthquake were most extensive north of Tustumena Lake in areas of water-saturated unconsolidated deposits with uneven topography. South of Tustumena Lake, damage resulted mainly from landslides formed along unconfined bluffs and riverbanks, and from submarine sliding and subsidence at Homer Spit. The investigation consisted of geochemical sampling, multielement chemical and spectrographic analyses, compilation of new and existing geochemical data, statistical evaluation of the total data set, and the generation of element distribution and abundance maps. The purpose of the survey was to define areas in the quadrangle that contain anomalous concentrations of metallic and nonmetallic elements. These studies are fundamental to a comprehensive evaluation of the mineral resource potential of the area and to assist in the discovery of additional economic mineral deposits.</p><p>The first-large scale geochemical sampling and analytical surveys were initiated in the McCarthy quadrangle in the early 1960's with the inception of the Wrangell Mountain project by the U.S. Geological Survey. Since that time, levels of activity in geochemical sampling in the quadrangle have fluctuated. Areas covered by the observations include southern Etolin and adjacent islands and part of Cleveland Peninsula, including 5 sites in the Ketchikan (KC) quadrangle immediately adjacent to the Craig quadrangle (fig. 2). A preliminary geologic map incorporating the data has been released (Berg and others, 1976). The printout includes the latitude-longitude coordinates of each field station, so that the user can locate the observations within a few metres on larger-scale topographic maps than figure 2.</p><p>The purpose of this report is to provide an organized file of detailed field observations to supplement and amplify a companion geologic map. The combined reports thus constitute a complete record of available information to serve as wide a range of potential users as possible.</p><p>The information in this report was transferred from geologic fieldsheets (fig. 3) to computer storage using the method described by Hudson and others (1975). A. The assessment addresses water and water-related land problems, present and future. It was felt that a supplementary report, as a part of the assessment, was needed to state in general terms the present hydrologic conditions, including the availability, quality, and use of both surface water and ground water in the Alaska region.</p><p>Alaska covers an area of 586,412 square miles, about one-fifth of the total area of the United States. Characteristic of parts of the region is the presence of permafrost. The physiography of Alaska ranges from low coastal plains of the Arctic and deltas of the major rivers to peaks of the Alaska Range. Climate in the State ranges from the maritime rain forests of southeast Alaska to the frozen desert of the Arctic. Mean annual runoff for the region is estimated at 1,260,000 cubic feet per second which includes an estimated 163,000 cubic feet per second of inflow from Canada.</p><p>The Alaska region has been divided into six hydrologic subregions and eighteen subareas. For each subarea, estimated mean annual runoff per square mile, suspended-sediment concentrations that can be expected during \"normal\" summer runoff and, where data are available, flood magnitudes and frequencies are illustrated on maps. Also illustrated are estimated ground-water yields in each subarea. Tables listing water quality of both ground water and surface water from selected wells and&nbsp;streams are also included. Water use according to the type of use is discussed, and estimates are given for the amounts used. Water-use categories in the State include domestic, irrigation, livestock, seafood processing, oil and gas development, petrochemical processing, pulp mills, hydroelectric, coal processing, steam electric, mineral processing, sand and gravel mining, and fish-hatchery operations. Also illustrated on maps are estimated ground-water yields in each subarea. Tables listing water quality of both ground water and surface water from selected wells and streams are also included.</p>","language":"English","publisher":"U.S. Geological The Yakataga Formation, with an aggregate outcrop thickness of about 5,000 m, is characterized by variable amounts of distinctive neritic marine tillite-like diamictite and laminated siltstone containing dropstones interpreted as ice-rafted glacial debris. The lithology, sedimentary structures and molluscan fauna of the formation suggest that active tidal glaciers or an ice shelf were present along the landward margin of the basin possibly beginning in early or early middle Miocene time. Dropstone distribution in outcrop sections indicates that glaciers reached tidewater intermittently during the Miocene and were almost continuously present throughout the Pliocene and much of the Pleistocene. Beginning in 1927, the placers were worked for 7 years by small-scale mining methods; in later years dragline excavators and a dredge were utilized. These deposits are important, not only because they are of high grade but because they are the only commercial source of platinum metals in the United States.&nbsp;</p><p>The bedded rocks of this area are sedimentary and volcanic rocks of late Paleozoic(?) age that have been intruded by a variety of ultrabasic rocks. The platinum metals of the placers have been derived from a mass of dunite and related rocks that constitute the bedrock of Red Mountain in the upper valley of the Salmon River. The western headwater tributaries of this stream are the fluvial conduits that have produced all the placers in the valley of the river.</p><p>The principal placers lie in two pay streaks, one in the valley floor of the Salmon River and the other in an ancient stream channel along the east side of this valley. The stream-channel deposit, called the bench pay streak, was formed in early Pleistocene time; its alluvial materials consist largely of clay derived from an ancient moraine believed to be of Nebraskan age. The valley-floor deposit, called the pay streak of the valley floor, consists of alluvial materials of fluvial and glaciofluvial origin whose ages range from Yarmouth to Holocene. Both channels contain high-grade placers that have yielded a large volume of platinum metals.</p><p>The platinum metals of these deposits are contained mainly in two alloys intergrown in a pseudoeutectic fabric. The major alloy is mainly platinum, with a small amount of iridium, still smaller amounts of rhodium and palladium, and probably some osmium and ruthenium. The minor alloy is dominantly iridium and osmium with less platinum and still less ruthenium and rhodium. The compositions of these two alloys are somewhat variable but tend to approach constant mean values. A small amount of free gold is recovered with the platinum metals. In addition to these two alloys, minute amounts of five platinum minerals have been identified. The weighted mean percentages of platinum, iridium, osmium, ruthenium, rhodium, palladium, and gold, as mined from 1936 to 1972, are respectively 82.25, 11.32, 2.15, 0.17, 1.30, 0.38, and 2.43.</p><p>The lodes from which these placers have been derived are, or have been, localized in the Red Mountain ridge, where the principal rocks are dunite and serpentinite. No lodes have been recognized, either because the platinum metals are sparsely distributed or because a large part of the platiniferous rock has been eroded. It is known, however, that the amounts of iridium, osmium, and ruthenium, or of osmiridium, decrease from south to north. Other generalizations regarding the composition and granularity of these metals have been deduced. The size and shape of the platinum lodes may have ranged from diffuse disseminations to high-grade concentrations in small loci. Under certain assumptions, the tenor of platinum metals in the dunite can be roughly approximated. Utilizing two totally different methods of computation, the mean tenor has been estimated to lie between 0.19 and 0.27 grain of platinum metals per cubic yard of dunite, or 0.014 to 0.023 gram per stere. The distribution pattern shows a concentration of occurrences in southeastern Alaska and particularly in the interior.</p><p>The only production of uranium in Alaska from any type of deposit has been from a hardrock deposit, that being the roughly 120,000 tons of ore averaging about one percent U<sub>3</sub>0<sub>8</sub> from the Ross-Adams mine near Bokan Mountain on Prince of Wales Island close to the southern tip of southeastern Alaska.</p><p>The Bokan Mountain uranium-thorium area includes about 71 mi<sup>2</sup> and is largely underlain by plutonic rocks (MacKevett, 1963). The plutonic rocks range from pyroxenite to peralkaline granite and syenite, but they consist chiefly of diorite, quartz diorite, granodiorite, and quartz monzonite. The peralkaline granite, a small pluton about 3 mi2 in area, is Late Triassic or Early Jurassic in age while the other plutonic rocks are early Paleozoic.</p>","language":"English","publisher":"U.S. Postglacial accumulation of peat, commonly 5 to 10 feet thick, and the presence of ground water at or very near the surface combine to create the swamp-muskeg terrane of much of the area. Deeper, confined ground water is also present beneath thick silt and clay layers that underlie the surficial deposits. Domestic water supply for the lowland lakes area is provided largely by public-supply wells completed in the deep, confined aquifers. No large perennial streams traverse the area, thus streamflow is not a major parameter in the area 's natural water balance. The major uses of surface water are recreational, including fishing and boating at several of the larger lakes, and private and commercial aircraft operations at Hood-Spenard Lakes floatplane base. The hydrology and water balance of these lakes is complex. Water levels in some lakes appear to be closely related to adjacent ground-water levels. Other lakes are evidently perched above the local water table. The relation of lake level to adjacent ground-water level may vary along the shoreline of a single lake. The effect of residential development practices on lake basin water balance is not completely understood. At Sand Lake, the largest lake in this area of rapid urbanization, the water level has declined about 6 feet since the early 1960's. Samples contain as much as 0.15 percent U<sub>3</sub>0<sub>8</sub> and 1.05 percent Th0<sub>2</sub>, and over 2 percent rare-earth elements. These mineralized rocks&nbsp;are closely associated with alkaline dikes which are part of a dike swarm that crops out over at least 250 km<sup>2</sup> (100 mi<sup>2</sup>). This large dike swarm is thus of considerable economic interest.</p><p>These uranium-, thorium-, and rare-earth-rich rocks occur near the west end of the western Alaska uranium-thorium province (West, 1953; Clark and others, 1975; Miller, 3976) and were found during a regional investigation of this province by the Geological Survey. The alkaline dikes were known from previous mapping by the two senior authors (Miller and others, 1972) to be anomalously radioactive. Most of the faults that approach or reach the seafloor cut strata that may be equivalent to the upper Yakataga Formation (Pliocene-Pleistocene). Along several faults the seafloor is offset from 5 to 20 m. A few faults appear to cut Holocene sediments, but none of these show offset at the seafloor.</p><p>Submarine slides or slumps have been found in two places in the OCS region: (1) seaward of the Malaspina Glacier and Icy Bay, an affected area of 1,770 km<sup>2</sup> with a slope of less than one-half degree, and (2) across the entire span of the Copper River prodelta, an area of 1,730 km<sup>2</sup>, having a slope of about one-half degree. Seismic profiles across these slide areas show disrupted reflectors and irregular topography commonly associated with submarine slides or slumps. Potential slide or slump areas have been delineated in areas of thick sediment accumulation and relatively steep slopes. Diagenetic alteration of framework grains throughout the stratigraphic sequence has produced widespread zeolite cement or phyllosilicate grain coatings and pseudomatrix. Multiple deformation and deep burial of the older Tertiary sequence--the Orca Group, the shale of Haydon Peak, and the Kulthieth and Tokun Formations--caused extensive alteration and grain interpenetration, resulting in low porosity values. Less intense deformation and intermediate depth of burial of the younger Tertiary sequence--the Katalla, Poul Creek, Redwood, and Yakataga Formations--has resulted in a greater range in textural properties. Most sandstone samples in the younger Tertiary sequence are poorly sorted, tightly packed, and have strongly appressed framework grains, but some are less tightly packed and contain less matrix. Soft and mineralogically unstable framework grains have undergone considerable alteration, reducing pore space even in the youngest rocks. \r\n\r\nMeasurements of porosity, permeability, grain density, and sonic velocity of outcrop samples of the younger Tertiary sequence indicate a modest up-section improvement in sandstone reservoir characteristics. Nonetheless porosity and permeability values typically are below 16 percent and 15 millidarcies respectively and grain densities are consistently high, about 2.7 gm/cc. These lineaments occur as alinements of surface geologic structures, linear valleys or ridges, and linear changes in tonal contrast marking differences in soil type, soil moisture, or vegetation. The lineaments are believed to represent the surface traces of zones of weakness deep within the earth's crust along which vertical or horizontal adjustments to earth stresses persistently recurred since at least Precambrian time.</p><p>A consistent pattern in the lineaments can be discerned in Alaska (fig. 1D), and throughout the North American Cordillera (fig. 2). This pattern is believed to represent a mosaic of crustal blocks, whose differential movements have guided the tectonic development of the Cordillera.</p><p>Areas in which mineral deposits are known to be concentrated are alined along many of the lineaments or occur at lineament intersections, suggesting that the zones of weakness reflected by the lineaments provided felicitous pathways for upward movement of mineralizing agents. Other lineaments bound areas of high mineral concentration suggesting that some crustal blocks have had a tectonic history more favorable for mineralization than others. These conclusions suggest that the study of space image lineaments can provide new and fruitful approaches to the search for concealed mineral deposits.</p><p>In Alaska, some lineaments coincide in part with active fault traces and some separate areas of significantly different structure and geologic history. However, the movements along the zones of weakness which these lineaments are believed to reflect have been too slow and spread over too many millions of years for the lineaments to be considered as marking zones of present earthquake hazard.</p><p>Detailed discussion of the lineaments, and of interpretations as to their meaning, are contained in: 1) a paper presented by Lathram and Raynolds at the First William T. One additional site was put under surveillance in 1976. Except for construction changes wrought by installation of the pipeline, most of the sites surveyed showed very little change since the 1975 surveys. Some of the significant events of 1976 at the monitored crossing sites include: glacier-dammed lake break-out floods on the Tazlina and Tsina Rivers, severe icings on the Gulkana River which resulted in a spring flood 3-4 feet (1 meter) over banktop, and virtual completion of all the buried crossings and all but one overhead crossing before the 1976 channel erosion resurveys were made.</p><p>Aerial photogrammetric surveys were used again in 1976 on the same seven sites as in 1975. Comparison of the photogrammetric surveys with each other and with on-the-ground surveys indicate that the method is generally applicable for channel erosion studies. However, it requires engineering judgement and personal knowledge of the site to avoid reaching inaccurate conclusions about channel change in some
