Examination of images from Nimbus, NOAA and Landsat satellites has revealed a series of lineaments in the earth's surface in Alaska 1000 km or more in length (fig. 1). These lineaments occur as alinements of surface geologic structures, linear valleys or ridges, and linear changes in tonal contrast marking differences in soil type, soil moisture, or vegetation. The lineaments are believed to represent the surface traces of zones of weakness deep within the earth's crust along which vertical or horizontal adjustments to earth stresses persistently recurred since at least Precambrian time.
A consistent pattern in the lineaments can be discerned in Alaska (fig. 1D), and throughout the North American Cordillera (fig. 2). This pattern is believed to represent a mosaic of crustal blocks, whose differential movements have guided the tectonic development of the Cordillera.
Areas in which mineral deposits are known to be concentrated are alined along many of the lineaments or occur at lineament intersections, suggesting that the zones of weakness reflected by the lineaments provided felicitous pathways for upward movement of mineralizing agents. Other lineaments bound areas of high mineral concentration suggesting that some crustal blocks have had a tectonic history more favorable for mineralization than others. These conclusions suggest that the study of space image lineaments can provide new and fruitful approaches to the search for concealed mineral deposits.
In Alaska, some lineaments coincide in part with active fault traces and some separate areas of significantly different structure and geologic history. However, the movements along the zones of weakness which these lineaments are believed to reflect have been too slow and spread over too many millions of years for the lineaments to be considered as marking zones of present earthquake hazard.

No surface evidence was found to indicate that any of the faults have been active in Holocene time. The sparse shallow seismicity thus far recorded does not correlate with known faults, nor does it define linear trends suggestive of faulting. Tidal flats at the mouths of the Kenai, Kasilof, and Chickaloon Rivers have been uplifted in the Holocene, however, and the uplift may reflect growing anticlines at depth. Some faults associated with folding may be active, but they are probably too limited in size to generate destructive earthquakes. They could, however, constitute a hazard to manmade structures in their immediate vicinity.
Vibrational damage and ground failure during the 1964 earthquake were most extensive north of Tustumena Lake in areas of water-saturated unconsolidated deposits with uneven topography. South of Tustumena Lake, damage resulted mainly from landslides formed along unconfined bluffs and riverbanks, and from submarine sliding and subsidence at Homer Spit. A comparable distribution of surficial effects may be anticipated in future large earthquakes on the Kenai Lowland.

Streamflow gains and losses were estimated from 23 seepage investigations made since May 1957. A contour map of the top of the principal confining stratum and an isopach map of the saturated material were made in order to locate areas with the greatest potential for unconfined ground-water development.
An adequate supply of water needed for further development of the Fort Richardson fish hatchery probably is available downstream from that site from unconfined ground-water sources. Unconfined ground water upstream from that site probably would not fulfill the water requirements of the hatchery. Additional aquifer testing is needed to verify these predictions.
At the proposed fish-hatchery site on Elmendorf Air Force Base it probably is not possible to withdraw the required water either from a system of wells in the unconfined ground-water zone or from Ship Creek during periods of low flow. Two areas upstream from the site offer better potential for unconfined ground-water development; however, exploratory test wells and aquifer testing will be required to define areas of greater saturated thickness and effects of withdrawing the water needed.

Postglacial accumulation of peat, commonly 5 to 10 feet thick, and the presence of ground water at or very near the surface combine to create the swamp-muskeg terrane of much of the area. Deeper, confined ground water is also present beneath thick silt and clay layers that underlie the surficial deposits. Domestic water supply for the lowland lakes area is provided largely by public-supply wells completed in the deep, confined aquifers. No large perennial streams traverse the area, thus streamflow is not a major parameter in the area 's natural water balance. The major uses of surface water are recreational, including fishing and boating at several of the larger lakes, and private and commercial aircraft operations at Hood-Spenard Lakes floatplane base. The hydrology and water balance of these lakes is complex. Water levels in some lakes appear to be closely related to adjacent ground-water levels. Other lakes are evidently perched above the local water table. The relation of lake level to adjacent ground-water level may vary along the shoreline of a single lake. The effect of residential development practices on lake basin water balance is not completely understood. At Sand Lake, the largest lake in this area of rapid urbanization, the water level has declined about 6 feet since the early 1960's. The data include concentrations of major inorganic constituents, nutrients, selected trace metals, total organic carbon, and chlorophyll. Vertical profiles of specific conductance, temperature, dissolved-oxygen saturation, and pH were drawn. With the exception of Redoubt Lake, all of the lakes are very similar chemically. The small differences in chemical composition probably reflect variations in geology of the drainage basins, altitudes, and morphometric characteristics of the lakes. Productivity is so low in all the lakes that it was not possible to rank the lakes by relative productivity from the reconnaissance sampling. Redoubt Lake is meromictic, but the others are probably holomictic and dimictic. The geochemical data are plotted on base maps showing generalized geology and the drainage pattern. The map symbols show the sample sites and ranges of values in the following manner: (1) open symbols denote background, (2) small black symbols represent weakly anomalous values, and (3) large black symbols denotes strongly anomalous values. Because the small black symbols represent weakly anomalous values, they are considered to be significant only where they are closely associated with strongly anomalous metal values either in the same sample medium or with anomalous values in other sample media. The ranges of values represented by the symbols are shown on the histograms which accompany the geochemical maps. An explanation of sampling, preparation, and analytical procedures is given in Circular 734, which accompanies this folio. This study incorporates the results of analyses for molybdenum from 825 rock samples collected in the quadrangle, and analyzed by the U.S. Geological Survey between 1961 and 1976 using semi-quantitative emission spectrophotometry. The samples included both unaltered and hydrothermally altered rocks. The hydrothermally altered rock consists of ore grade materials, gossans, fault gouge, vein materials, silica-rich boxworks, veins adjacent to faults, and fracture surfaces showing evidence of mineralization. Therefore, the analytical data set may be considered representative of most rock types known to occur in the study area.
The accompanying map shows the distribution and relative abundance of molybdenum in rocks collected. Geochemical analyses have been grouped and are represented by symbols on a base map, which includes topography and generalized geology. The range of analytical values and the symbol that represents it are shown on the histogram. Graphical representation of analytical values on the map permits easy observation of any large variation resulting from separate or duplicate samples collected at the same or nearby localites. All samples were crushed and ground to pass through a 180 micron opening sieve before being analyzed.

Copper is the dominant mineral commodity, both historically and in terms of potential future production. Gold and silver are the only other metals that have been produced. The metalliferous deposits are concentrated in a northwest-trending belt along the southern flank of the Wrangell Mountains, and, to a lesser extent, in a similar belt along the northeast flank of the range. Both belts have upper Paleozoic (Skolai Group) basements, abundant Mesozoic rocks, and some Tertiary intrusive rocks. They are marked by numerous faults, mainly northwest-striking. Mineral deposits are uncommon elsewhere in the quadrangle, especially in large tracks underlain by Wrangell Lava and in smaller areas underlain by the Kaskawulsh Group of Kindle (1953). Both the Wrangell Lava and the Kaskawulsh underlie rugged mountainous regions with extensive snow and ice cover, and could conceivably contain undetected concealed deposits.
The metallic, nonmetallic, and energy resources of the quadrangle are described sequentially. Copper, gold, and silver, because of their importance, are described early in the section on metal commodities; descriptions of the other metals follows in alphabetic sequence. Locations of the deposits and relative supplementary data for individual deposits are given in the accompanying map and table.

The molybdenum data are plotted on base maps showing generalized geology and the drainage pattern. The map symbols show the sample sites and ranges of values in the following manner: (1) open symbols denote background, (2) small black symbols represent weakly anomalous values, and (3) large black symbols denotes strongly anomalous values. Because the small black symbols represent weakly anomalous values, they are considered to be significant only where they are closely associated with strongly anomalous metal values either in the same sample medium or with anomalous values in other sample media. The ranges of values represented by the symbols are shown on the histograms which accompany the geochemical maps. An explanation of sampling, preparation, and analytical procedures is given in Circular 734, which accompanies this folio. The data are plotted on base maps showing generalized geology, base metal prospects in the Yukon-Tanana Upland, and the drainage pattern. The distribution and abundance of ore-related minerals (fig. A) were obtained by microscopic examination of the heavy-mineral concentrates. The number of mineral grains observed is shown in the map explanation. Figures B through H are geochemical maps showing the distribution and abundance of metals as determined by six-step semi-quantitative emission spectrography. The geochemical map symbols show sample sites and the actual values for the element in the sample as determined by spectrography. An explanation of sampling, preparation, and analytical procedure is given in Circular 734 which accompanies this folio. Complete analytical data for geochemical samples collected by the U.S. Geological Survey in the Tanacross quadrangle are available in an open-file report (O'Leary and others, 1976).

The effects of diurnal variations and magnetic storms have been ignored. Individual marine magnetic profiles have been upward continued to an elevation of 1 km (Robinson, 1970; Henderson, 1970) on the assumption that the magnetic sources are two-dimensional in a direction normal to the ship's track. The upward continued profiles were computed by convolving each profile with an optimum (7, 15 or 30 points) upward continuation operator. Additional errors of unknown magnitude result from the use of two-dimensional analytic techniques in a three-dimensional field. However, on the average, values at crossings differ by only 10 percent.
