The USGS began the study in November 1996.\r\n\r\nThe Plant was divided into nine sampling areas, which included some previously investi gated study sites. The investigation activities included the collection and presentation of data taken during drilling and water-quality sampling. Data collection focused on the saturated and unsatur ated zones and surface water. Twenty-three soil borings were completed. Ten monitoring wells (six existing wells and four newly constructed monitoring wells) were selected for water-quality sam pling. Surface-water and streambed-sediment sampling locations were chosen to monitor flow onto and off of the Plant. Seven sites were sampled for both surface-water and streambed-sediment quality.\r\n\r\nThis report presents data on the selected inorganic and organic constituents in soil, ground water, surface water, and streambed sediments at AFP 85. The methods of data collection and anal ysis also are included. The N aquifer is the major source of water in the 5,400-square-mile Black Mesa area, and the ground water occurs under confined and unconfined conditions.  Monitoring activities include continuous and periodic measurements of (1) ground-water pumpage from the confined and unconfined parts of the aquifer, (2) ground-water levels in the confined and unconfined areas of the aquifer, (3) surface-water discharge, and (4) chemistry of the ground water and surface water. In 1996, ground-water withdrawals for industrial and municipal use totaled about 7,040 acre-feet, which is less than a 1-percent decrease from 1995.  Pumpage from the confined part of the aquifer decreased by about 3 percent to 5,390 acre-feet, and pumpage from the unconfined part of the aquifer increased by about 9 percent to 1,650 acre-feet.  Water-level declines in the confined area during 1996 were recorded in 11 of 13 wells, and the median change was a decline of about 2.7 feet as opposed to a decline of 1.8 feet for 1995. Water-level declines in the unconfined area were recorded in 11 of 18 wells, and the median change was a decline of 0.5 foot in 1996 as opposed to a decline of 0.1 foot in 1995. The average low-flow discharge at the Moenkopi streamflow-gaging station was 2.3 cubic feet per second in 1996. Streamflow-discharge measurements also were made at Laguna Creek, Dinnebito Wash, and Polacca Wash during 1996. Average low-flow discharge was 2.3 cubic feet per second at Laguna Creek, 0.4 cubic foot per second at Dinnebito Wash, and 0.2 cubic foot per second at Polacca Wash. Discharge was measured at three springs. Discharge from Moenkopi School Spring decreased by about 2 gallons per minute from the measurement in 1995. Discharge from an unnamed spring near Dennehotso decreased by 1.3 gallons per minute from the measurement made in 1995; however, discharge increased slightly at Burro Spring. FHB1 allows MODFLOW users to specify flow or head boundary conditions that vary at times other than starting and ending times of stress periods and associated time steps. Values of flow and (or) head at each time step are calculated by linear interpolation of user- specified values. The ability to assign variable flow and head conditions defined at times not corresponding with the model stress periods allows greater flexibility in simulating natural geohydrologic systems and, at the same time, improves the efficiency of the methods used to represent these systems. The package also provides a way to apply specified-flow and specified-head boundaries in embedded, or nested, smaller-scale models using flow and (or) head values from larger-scale models. Using FHB1, the two models can have different simulation stress periods and time steps. Before these standards can be meaningfully applied, however, \r\nambient concentrations and loads of trace elements, principally arsenic, \r\nneed to be determined in the Rio Grande and inflow sources. Arsenic  \r\nconcentrations also need to be determined in the edible portion of fish \r\ntissue because the Pueblo of Isleta standard for arsenic is based on fish \r\nconsumption.\r\n\r\n     Eighteen surface-water sampling sites on a reach of the Rio Grande \r\nfrom the Pueblo of San Felipe to Los Lunas, New Mexico, were sampled \r\nquarterly from October 1994 to August 1996. The sites include eight Rio Grande \r\nsites, one Jemez River site, five riverside drain sites, and four wastewater- \r\ntreatment plant outfalls. Trace-element protocol was used to collect and  \r\nprocess the samples. Field and laboratory quality-control samples were \r\nanalyzed, and the results are included in this report. Fish-tissue samples \r\nwere collected from four of the Rio Grande sites and the Albuquerque \r\nRiverside Drain, the Atrisco Riverside Drain, and three lakes at a  \r\nrecreational fishing area on the Isleta Indian Reservation. \r\n\r\n     Arsenic in the Rio Grande is nearly all in the dissolved phase. There \r\nwas little temporal change in arsenic concentration at the Rio Grande sites. \r\nThe mean dissolved-arsenic concentration in the Rio Grande increased downstream \r\nfrom 1.8 micrograms per liter at the Pueblo of San Felipe to 3.6 micrograms \r\nper liter at Los Lunas. Mean dissolved-arsenic concentrations in the  \r\nriverside drains were slightly higher (2.8 to 4.5 micrograms per liter) than \r\nthose in the Rio Grande and were higher still in the wastewater-treatment \r\nplant outfalls (7.9 to 16.2 micrograms per liter) and the Jemez River (18.2 \r\nmicrograms per liter). Sites were selected and samples were collected for 28 integrated water-quality studies designed to provide a comprehensive and nationally consistent description of current water-quality conditions, to begin to identify trends in water quality, and to determine the major factors that affect observed water quality. To achieve this, stream-water, ground-water, streambed-sediment, and biota samples were collected, and habitat assessments were conducted at selected data-collection sites.</p><p>This report discusses the water-quality study design, site-selection strategy, and implementation steps used to obtain water-quality and related data. Methods employed to collect, process, and analyze samples, characterize sites, and assess habitat are described. A comprehensive list of all sites employed in these studies and their characteristics is provided. The profiles illustrate the 1993 flood along the Raccoon, North Raccoon, South Raccoon, and Middle Raccoon Rivers and along Brushy and Storm Creeks in the west-central Iowa counties of Carroll, Dallas, Greene, Guthrie, and Polk. Water-surface-elevation profiles for the floods of June 1947, March 1979, and June 29- July 1, 1986, in the Raccoon River Basin also are included in the report for comparative purposes. The July 9-11, 1993, flood is the largest known peak discharge at gaging stations Brushy Creek near Templeton (station number 05483318) 19,000 cubic feet per second, Middle Raccoon River near Bayard (station number 05483450) 27,500 cubic feet per second, Middle Raccoon River at Panora (station number 05483600) 22,400 cubic feet per second, South Raccoon River at Redfield (station number 05484000) 44,000 cubic feet per second, and Raccoon River at Van Meter (station number 05484500) 70,100 cubic feet per second. The peak discharges were, respectively, 1.5, 1.3, 1.1,1.2, and 1.3 times larger than calculated 100-year recurrence-interval discharges. The report provides information on flood stages and discharges and floodflow frequencies for streamflow-gaging stations in the Raccoon River Basin using flood information collected through 1996. A flood history summarizes rainfall conditions and damages for floods that occurred during 1947, 1958, 1979, 1986, 1990, and 1993. Information on temporary bench marks and reference points established in the Raccoon River Basin during 1976-79 and 1995-97 also is included in the report.</p>","language":"English","publisher":"U.S. Water-surface elevations were measured in 41 ground-water observation wells and at 20 surface-water sites to help characterize the geohydrology of the Fairbanks International Airport area. From 1990 to 1993, data were collected in the vicinity of the former fire-training area at the airport. From 1993 to 1996, the data-collection area was expanded to include the entire airport area. Because of a lack \r\nof available low-flow data for use in addressing potential water-quality \r\nproblems, a project was established to collect low-flow water-quality \r\nand discharge data. The project was initiated under a current cooperative \r\nprogram between the U.S. Geological Survey and the Albuquerque Metropolitan \r\nArroyo Flood Control Authority. This report summarizes hydrologic data for \r\nthat project collected between October 31, 1990, and September 3, 1994, at \r\nthree sites in the lined channel network in northeast Albuquerque. \r\n     The data collection network consisted of three sampling sites on \r\nCampus Wash, Embudo Arroyo, and the North Floodway Channel. The sites on \r\nCampus Wash and the North Floodway Channel were established at existing \r\ncontinuous-record streamflow-gaging stations; the Embudo Arroyo site was \r\nestablished at the site of an abandoned streamflow-gaging station. The wells were installed to monitor water levels and allow collection of water samples from shallow, intermediate, and deep water-bearing zones. Analysis of the samples will determine the horizontal and vertical distribution of any contaminated ground water migrating from known contaminant sources. Eight wells were drilled near the Fire Training Area (Site 5), five wells near the 9th Street Landfill (Site 3), four wells at the Antenna Field Landfill (Site 2), and three wells near Privet Road Compound (Site 1). Depths range from 73 to 167 feet below land surface. \r\n\r\n      The U.S. Geological Survey conducted borehole-geophysical and borehole-video logging to identify water-bearing zones so that appropriate intervals could be screened in each monitor well. Geophysical logs were run on the 20 monitor wells and 1 existing well. Video logs were run on 16 wells. \r\n\r\n      Caliper and video logs were used to locate fractures, inflections on fluid-temperature and fluid-resistivity logs were used to locate possible water-bearing fractures, and flowmeter measurements verified these locations. Single-point-resistance and natural-gamma logs provided information on stratigraphy.
