Sixteen artificial substrate samplers (8 multiplate and 8 rock-fllled baskets with net liners) were retrieved after 2 to 4 months' exposure. The most common groups in order of their abundance were Copepoda, Foraminifera, Nematoda, and Ostracoda during winter; Copepoda, Nematoda, Cirripedra, and Foraminifera, during spring; Pelecypoda, Amphipoda, Insecta, and Cirripedia during summer; and Pelecypoda, Copepoda, Insecta, and Nematoda during fall. The most abundant species collected during the study were the blue mussels (<i>Mytilus edulis</i>), copepods (<i>Harpacticus</i> sp.), midges (<i>Clunio</i> sp., Ghironomidae), and fairy shrimp (unidentified amphipods). During the summer and fall of 1972 the total number of epifaunal organisms was 22 times greater than during the same period in 1971, with <i>Mytilus edulis</i> comprising 88 percent of the community in 1972 (more than triple the percentage for 1971). The two sampler types collected approximately the same major groups of organisms; however, the multiplate samplers collected an average of 1.6 times more organisms than the basket samplers. The basket sampler, on the other hand, collected three more species per sample than did the multiplate samplers, resulting in species diversities 0.3 to 0.6 greater than those of the multiplate samplers. Diversity values were lower during 1972, except for the spring sample. Seasonal diversity varied from a low of 0.36 in the summer of 1972 to a high of 3.99 in the fall of 1971.</p>","language":"English","publisher":"U. S. This formation, which was derived from erosion of intertidal bars in Turnagain Arm, averages 1.5 m thick seaward of the Seward Highway and 0.9 m thick landward. Its distribution is controlled both, by the arrangement of the major streams that enter tidewater and by manmade features such as the highway and railroad embankments. The Placer River Silt is still being deposited. The contemporary lowland sedimentation system of the Portage area includes a number of depositional settings: (1) In the Placer River Silt upper tidal flats, levees, and channelway fans, (2) elsewhere in the intertidal zone tidal stream channels, lower tidal flats, and saltwater marsh, and (3) in the supratidal zone gravel levees, freshwater marsh, bogs, and lakes. Since 1964, the critical environmental results of the earthquake-caused deposition have been abandonment of the settlement of Portage, formation of an unsightly blanket of silt, destruction of natural plant communities, localized erosion, and creation of quicksand hazards.</p>","language":"English","publisher":"U.S. Geological Survey","usgsCitation":"Ovenshine, A., Lawson, D.E., and Bartsch-Winkler, S., 1976, The Placer River Silt — An intertidal deposit caused by the 1964 Alaska earthquake: Journal of Research of the U.S. Geological Survey, v. 4, no. 2, p. 151-162.","productDescription":"12 p.","startPage":"151","endPage":"162","costCenters":[],"links":[{"id":402210,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/thumbnails/outside_thumb.jpg"},{"id":402209,"rank":1,"type":{"id":11,"text":"Document"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/journal/1976/vol4issue2/report.pdf"}],"country":"United States","state":"Alaska","city":"Portage","otherGeospatial":"Placer River, Turnagain Arm","geographicExtents":"{\n  \"type\": \"FeatureCollection\",\n  \"features\": [\n    {\n      \"type\": \"Feature\",\n      \"properties\": {},\n      \"geometry\": {\n        \"type\": \"Polygon\",\n        \"coordinates\": [\n          [\n            [\n              -149.36737060546875,\n              60.784640823564395\n            ],\n            [\n              -148.82217407226562,\n              60.784640823564395\n            ],\n            [\n              -148.82217407226562,\n              60.97976989482837\n            ],\n            [\n              -149.36737060546875,\n              60.97976989482837\n            ],\n            [\n              -149.36737060546875,\n              60.784640823564395\n            ]\n          ]\n        ]\n      }\n    }\n  ]\n}","volume":"4","issue":"2","noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Ovenshine, A.T.","contributorId":80268,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Ovenshine","given":"A.T.","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":844712,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1},{"text":"Lawson, Daniel E.","contributorId":292472,"corporation":false,"usgs":false,"family":"Lawson","given":"Daniel","email":"","middleInitial":"E.","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":844713,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":2},{"text":"Bartsch-Winkler, S. Encompassing a total area of more than 300,000 sq km, most of the basins are either elongate structural sags, grabens, or half (asymmetric) grabens beneath the outer shelf. The regional trend of these basins is northwest, parallel with that of the continental margin. Two of the basins, St. George and Navarin, contain 7 to 10 km of Upper Cretaceous(?) and Cenozoic sedimentary strata. A major divergence in dip of beds in the upper half of the sedimentary section may reflect an abrupt shelf-wide change in the rate of sedimentation and/or subsidence, probably during the Miocene. The outer sub-shelf basement grabens and adjacent ridges (horsts) are bounded by high-angle normal faults that exhibit growth-type structure.</p><p>St. Matthew basin, an elongate, southwest-trending feature of the inner shelf, lies along the offshore expression of the Kaltag fault of western Alaska. The Kaltag fault, like the Denali fault in southwestern Alaska, does not extend to the outer Bering Sea shelf but ends or turns parallel with the margin within the inner shelf.</p><p>The inner shelf is underlain by a broad basement high, Nunivak arch, the seaward half of which is characterized by an arcuate belt of high-frequency and high-amplitude magnetic anomalies. This zone of intense magnetic anomalies along the shelf is probably the signature of a Mesozoic magmatic arc that extends from southwestern Alaska to eastern Siberia and consists of Jurassic to Cretaceous plutonic and volcanic rocks. We speculate that this magmatic arc resulted from oblique convergence and subduction in the Mesozoic between the Kula(?) and North American plates along the eastern Beringian margin. Folding and uplift in the area of the present outer shelf occurred contemporaneously with magmatism along the inner shelf. Plate convergence apparently ceased by the end of the Mesozoic or t e beginning of the Cenozoic. Subsequently, the foldbelt underlying the outer shelf was eroded extensively and rifted extensionally to form large, deep basins. On the average, the shelf has subsided more than 1.5 km. Subsidence and sediment burial of the eroded orogen formed the modern Beringian shelf.</p>","language":"English","publisher":"AAPG","doi":"10.1306/83D92299-16C7-11D7-8645000102C1865D","usgsCitation":"Marlow, M.S., Scholl, D.W., Cooper, A.K., and Buffington, E.C., 1976, Structure and evolution of Bering Sea shelf south of St. Lawrence Island: AAPG Bulletin, v. 60, no. 2, p. 161-183, https://doi.org/10.1306/83D92299-16C7-11D7-8645000102C1865D.","productDescription":"23 p.","startPage":"161","endPage":"183","costCenters":[{"id":186,"text":"Coastal and Marine Geology Program","active":true,"usgs":true},{"id":520,"text":"Pacific Coastal and Marine Science Center","active":true,"usgs":true}],"links":[{"id":371026,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/thumbnails/outside_thumb.jpg"}],"otherGeospatial":"Bering Sea Shelf","volume":"60","issue":"2","noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Marlow, Michael S.","contributorId":72775,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Marlow","given":"Michael","email":"","middleInitial":"S.","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":779000,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1},{"text":"Scholl, David W. 0000-0001-6500-6962 dscholl@usgs.gov","orcid":"https://orcid.org/0000-0001-6500-6962","contributorId":3738,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Scholl","given":"David","email":"dscholl@usgs.gov","middleInitial":"W.","affiliations":[{"id":520,"text":"Pacific Coastal and Marine Science Center","active":true,"usgs":true},{"id":186,"text":"Coastal and Marine Geology Program","active":true,"usgs":true}],"preferred":true,"id":779001,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":2},{"text":"Cooper, Alan K. acooper@usgs.gov","contributorId":2854,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Cooper","given":"Alan","email":"acooper@usgs.gov","middleInitial":"K.","affiliations":[{"id":520,"text":"Pacific Coastal and Marine Science Center","active":true,"usgs":true}],"preferred":true,"id":779002,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":3},{"text":"Buffington, E. Since that time, potable water has been supplied by streams, lakes, wells, and in the late 1950's, a gallery system. The island is a low-lying, wave-cut platform composed of pyroclastic and volcanic rocks with some intrusives. Bedrock is overlain by thin glacial deposits. Most of the island 's present surface is relatively thick peat deposits. On the southern and western sides of the island active sand dunes are present. Ground-water supplies are limited by the dense bedrock; only a small amount of water penetrates into fracture systems. Most ground-water movement is in the overlying glacial and peat deposits. Ground water moves generally from north to south across the island. Currently water supplies are drawn from the gallery system which is capable of providing about 200,000 gallons per day. An emergency water supply is available from two wells. Additional supplies could be developed by either adding to the existing gallery or constructing an additional gallery near the present gallery system. The chemical quality of water analyzed from the gallery well generally approximates that of surface water on the island. None of the constituents in samples from streams, lakes, or ground water, except the August 27, 1970, analysis for Lower Lake, exceed the recommended limits for drinking water (Environmental Protection Agency, 1973).&nbsp;</p>","language":"English","publisher":"U.S. Geological Survey","doi":"10.3133/ofr7682","usgsCitation":"Feulner, A.J., Zenone, C., and Reed, K.M., 1976, Geohydrology and water supply, Shemya Island, Alaska: U.S. Geological Survey Open-File Report 76-82, 1 Plate: 30.42 x 26.07 inches, https://doi.org/10.3133/ofr7682.","productDescription":"1 Plate: 30.42 x 26.07 inches","costCenters":[],"links":[{"id":147076,"rank":1,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/thumbnails/usgs_thumb.jpg"},{"id":414654,"rank":3,"type":{"id":36,"text":"NGMDB Index Page"},"url":"https://ngmdb.usgs.gov/Prodesc/proddesc_15435.htm","linkFileType":{"id":5,"text":"html"}},{"id":42105,"rank":2,"type":{"id":17,"text":"Plate"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1976/0082/plate-1.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}}],"country":"United States","state":"Alaska","otherGeospatial":"Shemya Island","geographicExtents":"{\n  \"type\": \"FeatureCollection\",\n  \"features\": [\n    {\n      \"type\": \"Feature\",\n      \"properties\": {},\n      \"geometry\": {\n        \"coordinates\": [\n          [\n            [\n              174.05425444829967,\n              52.750148768881076\n            ],\n            [\n              174.05425444829967,\n              52.70189105722818\n            ],\n            [\n              174.15968017055042,\n              52.70189105722818\n            ],\n            [\n              174.15968017055042,\n              52.750148768881076\n            ],\n            [\n              174.05425444829967,\n              52.750148768881076\n            ]\n          ]\n        ],\n        \"type\": \"Polygon\"\n      }\n    }\n  ]\n}","noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e4b1be4b07f02db6a8b2f","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Feulner, Alvin John","contributorId":32169,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Feulner","given":"Alvin","email":"","middleInitial":"John","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":168069,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1},{"text":"Zenone, Chester","contributorId":8094,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Zenone","given":"Chester","email":"","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":168068,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":2},{"text":"Reed, K. The spinel grains show continuous zoning from cores with up to 53 wt.% Cr<sub>2</sub>O<sub>3</sub>&nbsp;to rims with less than 11 wt.% Cr<sub>2</sub>O<sub>3</sub>. Their composition is exceptional because they contain less than 0.32 wt.% MgO and less than 0.10 wt.% Al<sub>2</sub>O<sub>3</sub>&nbsp;and TiO<sub>2</sub>. Also notable are the concentrations of MnO and V<sub>2</sub>O<sub>3</sub>, which reach 4.73 and 4.50 wt.%, respectively, in the cores. Both birds were free of physical defects when originally placed in the pen but the female was blind in one eye prior to the 1973 breeding season.....Nesting first occurred during 1971 when at least two eggs were laid; all but one, which showed no sign of embryonic development after being incubated for 56 days, were broken by the adult birds. Two of three eggs laid in 1972 hatched. Both young died a few days after hatching following a period of inclement weather. Three eggs were laid and hatched during 1973. Antagonism between the nestlings was observed soon after hatching and may have been responsible for the unobserved death of one nestling, two days after the third young hatched. The two remaining young were raised by the adult birds and eventually left the nest 85 days after the first egg hatched. Incubation periods for the 1972-73 clutches averaged 35 days. No renesting attempts were made by the eagles during the 3.year period.","largerWorkType":{"id":2,"text":"Article"},"largerWorkTitle":"Wilson Bulletin","largerWorkSubtype":{"id":10,"text":"Journal Article"},"language":"English","usgsCitation":"Maestrelli, J., and Wiemeyer, S.N., 1975, Breeding bald eagles in captivity: The Wilson Bulletin, v. 87, no. 1, p. 45-53.","productDescription":"45-53","startPage":"45","endPage":"53","numberOfPages":"9","costCenters":[{"id":531,"text":"Patuxent Wildlife Research Center","active":true,"usgs":true}],"links":[{"id":16140,"rank":300,"type":{"id":11,"text":"Document"},"url":"https://elibrary.unm.edu/sora/Wilson/v087n01/p0045-p0053.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":198334,"rank":0,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/thumbnails/outside_thumb.jpg"}],"volume":"87","issue":"1","noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e4a0ce4b07f02db5fc650","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Maestrelli, J.R.","contributorId":75245,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Maestrelli","given":"J.R.","email":"","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":333608,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1},{"text":"Wiemeyer, Stanley N.","contributorId":78279,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Wiemeyer","given":"Stanley","email":"","middleInitial":"N.","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":333609,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":2}]}}
