Prototypes using the automated process have demonstrated the ability to increase the quantity and quality of data collected and have shown the potential for reducing labor and material costs for ground-water quality data collection. Automation of water-quality monitoring systems in the field, in laboratories, and in industry have increased data density and utility while reducing operating costs. Uses for an automated ground-water monitoring system include, (but are not limited to) monitoring ground-water quality for research, monitoring known or potential contaminant sites, such as near landfills, underground storage tanks, or other facilities where potential contaminants are stored, and as an early warning system monitoring groundwater quality near public water-supply wells.","language":"ENGLISH","publisher":"Geological Survey (U.S.)","doi":"10.3133/fs11297","usgsCitation":"Smith, K.P., and Granato, G., 1997, Technology Transfer Opportunities: Automated Ground-Water Monitoring: U.S. Geological Survey Fact Sheet 112-97, 2 p., https://doi.org/10.3133/fs11297.","productDescription":"2 p.","costCenters":[{"id":377,"text":"Massachusetts-Rhode Island Water Science Center","active":false,"usgs":true}],"links":[{"id":882,"rank":300,"type":{"id":11,"text":"Document"},"url":"https://ma.water.usgs.gov/automon/fs-112-97.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":125153,"rank":0,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/thumbnails/fs_112_97.jpg"},{"id":9471,"rank":100,"type":{"id":15,"text":"Index Page"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/fs/1997/fs112-97/","linkFileType":{"id":5,"text":"html"}}],"noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e4adbe4b07f02db685b33","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Smith, Kirk P. 0000-0003-0269-474X kpsmith@usgs.gov","orcid":"https://orcid.org/0000-0003-0269-474X","contributorId":1516,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Smith","given":"Kirk","email":"kpsmith@usgs.gov","middleInitial":"P.","affiliations":[{"id":466,"text":"New England Water Science Center","active":true,"usgs":true},{"id":376,"text":"Massachusetts Water Science Center","active":true,"usgs":true}],"preferred":true,"id":153457,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1},{"text":"Granato, Gregory E. 0000-0002-2561-9913 ggranato@usgs.gov","orcid":"https://orcid.org/0000-0002-2561-9913","contributorId":1692,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Granato","given":"Gregory E.","email":"ggranato@usgs.gov","affiliations":[{"id":466,"text":"New England Water Science Center","active":true,"usgs":true}],"preferred":false,"id":153458,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":2}]}}

The study area (fig. 1) comprises about 2,000 square miles of outcrops of the Chicot and Evangeline aquifers in northwestern Harris County, Montgomery County, and southern Walker County. The depth to the water table was estimated using seismic refraction, and an estimated rate of recharge in the aquifer outcrops was computed using the tritium-interface method (Andres and Egger, 1985) in which environmental tritium is the ground-water tracer. The water table generally ranges in depth between 10 and 30 feet in the study area, and the average total recharge rate was estimated to be not larger than 6 inches per year. The rate is total recharge to the saturated zone, rather than net recharge to the deep regional flow system. The total recharge can be reduced by evapotranspiration and by local discharge, mainly to streams. These results are published in USGS Water-Resources Investigations Report 96-4018 (Noble and others, 1996). A second study of environmental tritium in the same area as the 1989-90 study, also in cooperation with the Harris-Galveston Coastal Subsidence District, was done in 1996 to confirm the results of the original study. This fact sheet documents the estimation of an upper limit on the average total recharge rate on the basis of the vertical movement of tritium in ground water during 1953-89 and during 1953-95.</p>","language":"English","publisher":"U.S. Geological Survey","doi":"10.3133/fs17997","usgsCitation":"Noble, J.E., 1997, Estimated rate of recharge in outcrops of the Chicot and Evangeline aquifers near Houston, Texas: U.S. Geological Survey Fact Sheet 179-97, 4 p., https://doi.org/10.3133/fs17997.","productDescription":"4 p.","onlineOnly":"N","additionalOnlineFiles":"N","costCenters":[{"id":583,"text":"Texas Water Science Center","active":true,"usgs":true}],"links":[{"id":122619,"rank":0,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/thumbnails/fs_179_97.jpg"},{"id":7805,"rank":100,"type":{"id":15,"text":"Index Page"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/fs/fs-179-97/","linkFileType":{"id":5,"text":"html"}},{"id":327078,"rank":101,"type":{"id":11,"text":"Document"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/fs/fs-179-97/pdf/FS-179-97.pdf"}],"noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e4a81e4b07f02db64a0b0","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Noble, John E.","contributorId":92237,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Noble","given":"John","email":"","middleInitial":"E.","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":153230,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1}]}}

The flooding was the result of widespread and numerous intense thunderstorms that, together with saturated soils, produced large volumes of runoff. The magnitude of flooding exceeded the 100-year discharge values (1-percent chance of exceedance in any given year) at many streamflow-gaging stations in Illinois, Iowa, Kansas, Minnesota, Missouri, Nebraska, North Dakota, South Dakota, and Wisconsin. The flooding was unusual because of its long duration and widespread severe damage. The Mississippi and the Missouri Rivers were above flood stage for more than 1 month at several locations along their lengths. Millions of acres of agricultural and urban lands were inundated for weeks, and unofficial damage estimates exceeded $10 billion in the flooded States (Parrett and others, 1993),<br />During summer 1993, large parts of Kansas City, Missouri, and Kansas City, Kansas, and vicinity were flooded from overflows of the Missouri and the Kansas Rivers and numerous smaller tributaries, This report provides flood-peak elevation data and delineates the arcalcktent of the 1993 floods in the Kansas City metropolitan area for July 10 and 27, 1993 (fig. 1A, sheet 1: B, sheet 2: C, sheet 3). The 1993 flood elevations and extent of flooding are compared with flood-plain boundaries defined by Flood Insurance Studies conducted by the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) for cities and counties in the area (U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development, 1975&ndash;95).<br />This report is one of a series of U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) investigations that document the effects of the 1993 flooding of the upper Mississippi and the Missouri River Basins and that improve the technical base from which flood-plain management decisions can be made by other agencies.</p>","language":"English","publisher":"U.S. Geological Survey","doi":"10.3133/ha735E","usgsCitation":"Perry, C.A., Clement, R.W., and Studley, S.E., 1997, Delineation of flooding within the upper Mississippi River Basin — Flood of July 10 and 27, 1993, in Kansas City Missouri, and Kansas City, Kansas, and vicinity: U.S. Geological Survey Hydrologic Atlas 735, 3 Plates: 50.00 × 35.50 inches or smaller, https://doi.org/10.3133/ha735E.","productDescription":"3 Plates: 50.00 × 35.50 inches or smaller","onlineOnly":"N","additionalOnlineFiles":"N","costCenters":[],"links":[{"id":186306,"rank":0,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/thumbnails/usgs_thumb.jpg"},{"id":89359,"rank":402,"type":{"id":17,"text":"Plate"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/ha/735e/plate-3.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":408133,"rank":2,"type":{"id":36,"text":"NGMDB Index Page"},"url":"https://ngmdb.usgs.gov/Prodesc/proddesc_16203.htm","linkFileType":{"id":5,"text":"html"}},{"id":89358,"rank":401,"type":{"id":17,"text":"Plate"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/ha/735e/plate-2.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":89357,"rank":400,"type":{"id":17,"text":"Plate"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/ha/735e/plate-1.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}}],"scale":"24000","country":"United States","state":"Kansas, Missouri","otherGeospatial":"upper Mississippi River Basin","geographicExtents":"{\n  \"type\": \"FeatureCollection\",\n  \"features\": [\n    {\n      \"type\": \"Feature\",\n      \"properties\": {},\n      \"geometry\": {\n        \"type\": \"Polygon\",\n        \"coordinates\": [\n          [\n            [\n              -94.875,\n              39.033\n            ],\n            [\n              -94.375,\n              39.033\n            ],\n            [\n              -94.375,\n              39.25\n            ],\n            [\n              -94.875,\n              39.25\n            ],\n            [\n              -94.875,\n              39.033\n            ]\n          ]\n        ]\n      }\n    }\n  ]\n}","noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e4ab4e4b07f02db67003c","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Perry, Charles A. cperry@usgs.gov","contributorId":2093,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Perry","given":"Charles","email":"cperry@usgs.gov","middleInitial":"A.","affiliations":[],"preferred":true,"id":277633,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1},{"text":"Clement, Ralph W.","contributorId":24818,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Clement","given":"Ralph","email":"","middleInitial":"W.","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":277635,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":2},{"text":"Studley, Seth E. sstudley@usgs.gov","contributorId":5916,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Studley","given":"Seth","email":"sstudley@usgs.gov","middleInitial":"E.","affiliations":[{"id":353,"text":"Kansas Water Science Center","active":false,"usgs":true}],"preferred":true,"id":277634,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":3}]}}

The major rivers that drain these States are the Niobrara, the Platte, the Kansas, the Arkansas, and the Missouri; the Mississippi River is the eastern boundary of the area. These rivers supply water for many uses but ground water is the source of slightly more than one-half of the total water withdrawn for all uses within the three-State area. The aquifers that contain the water consist of consolidated sedimentary rocks and unconsolidated deposits that range in age from Cambrian through Quaternary. This chapter describes the geology and hydrology of each of the principal aquifers throughout the three-State area. </p><p>Some water enters Segment 3 as inflow from rivers and aquifers that cross the segment boundaries, but precipitation, as rain and snow, is the primary source of water within the area. Average annual precipitation (1951-80) increases from west to east and ranges from about 16 to 48 inches (fig. 1). The climate of the western one-third of Kansas and Nebraska, where the average annual precipitation generally is less than 20 inches per year, is considered to be semiarid. This area receives little precipitation chiefly because it is distant from the Gulf of Mexico, which is the principal source of moisture-laden air for the entire segment, but partly because it is located in the rain shadow of the Rocky Mountains. Average annual precipitation is greatest in southeastern Missouri. </p><p>Much of the precipitation is returned to the atmosphere by evapotranspiration, which is the combination of evaporation from the land surface and surface-water bodies, and transpiration from plants. Some of the precipitation either flows directly into streams as overland runoff or percolates into the soil and then moves downward into aquifers where it is stored for a time and subsequently released as base flow to streams. Average annual runoff, which is the total discharge into a stream from surface- and ground-water sources, ranges from about 0.2 inch in the western part of the area to about 20 inches in southeastern Missouri (fig. 2). Average annual runoff generally reflects the distribution of average annual precipitation during the same period. However, runoff is less than precipitation everywhere and ranges from less than 5 to about 35 percent of the average annual precipitation. Evapotranspiration rates are high, especially in the western one-half of the area; thus, only a small percentage of the precipitation is available to recharge aquifers in most places. Locally, however, runoff might be significantly less than shown in figure 2, and ground-water recharge, greater, especially where highly permeable rocks or deposits at the land surface allow precipitation to rapidly infiltrate. Examples of such places are the Sand Hills area of Nebraska, which is blanketed by permeable windblown sands, and parts of southern Missouri, where permeable limestone is at or near the land surface. </p><p>The land surface of Segment 3 generally slopes gradually from west to east. In the Great Plains Physiographic Province (fig. 3), the altitude of the flat land surface locally is about 5,000 feet above sea level in westernmost Nebraska. By contrast, in the flat Coastal Plain Physiographic Province of eastern Missouri, the altitude is about 500 feet above sea level. The land surface is gently rolling in the Central Lowland Province except where major rivers and their tributaries are deeply incised. In the Ozark Plateaus Physiographic Province, rugged topography has developed where the underlying rocks have been uplifted and deeply eroded.</p>","largerWorkTitle":"Ground Water Atlas of the United Surface- and ground-water samples are collected and sent to USGS laboratories for chemical analyses. The laboratories identify and quantify the constituents in the water samples. Random and systematic errors occur during sample handling, chemical analysis, and data processing. Although all errors cannot be eliminated from measurements, the magnitude of their uncertainty can be estimated and tracked over time. Since 1981, the USGS has operated an independent, external, quality-assurance project called the Blind Sample Project (BSP). The purpose of the BSP is to monitor and evaluate the quality of laboratory analytical results through the use of double-blind quality-control (QC) samples. The information provided by the BSP assists the laboratories in detecting and correcting problems in the analytical procedures. The information also can aid laboratory users in estimating the extent that laboratory errors contribute to the overall errors in their environmental data.","language":"English","publisher":"U.S. Geological Survey","doi":"10.3133/fs13697","usgsCitation":"Ludtke, A.S., and Woodworth, M.T., 1997, USGS Blind Sample Project: monitoring and evaluating laboratory analytical quality: U.S. Geological Survey Fact Sheet 136-97, 2 p., https://doi.org/10.3133/fs13697.","productDescription":"2 p.","numberOfPages":"2","costCenters":[],"links":[{"id":139468,"rank":0,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/thumbnails/fs13697.jpg"},{"id":285409,"type":{"id":11,"text":"Document"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/fs/0136-97/report.pdf"}],"noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e4a28e4b07f02db610f55","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Ludtke, Amy S. asludtke@usgs.gov","contributorId":4735,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Ludtke","given":"Amy","email":"asludtke@usgs.gov","middleInitial":"S.","affiliations":[{"id":503,"text":"Office of Water Quality","active":true,"usgs":true}],"preferred":true,"id":153127,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1},{"text":"Woodworth, Mark T. woodwort@usgs.gov","contributorId":3452,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Woodworth","given":"Mark","email":"woodwort@usgs.gov","middleInitial":"T.","affiliations":[],"preferred":true,"id":153126,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":2}]}}

Today, aerial photographs and satellite images are commonplace.\n\nThe rate of acquiring aerial photographs and satellite images has increased rapidly in recent years. Views of the Earth obtained from aircraft or satellites have become valuable tools to Government resource planners and managers, land-use experts, environmentalists, engineers, scientists, and a wide variety of other users.\n\nMany people want historical aerial photographs for business or personal reasons. They may want to locate the boundaries of an old farm or a piece of family property. Or they may want a photograph as a record of changes in their neighborhood, or as a gift.\n\nThe U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) maintains the Earth Science Information Centers (ESIC?s) to sell aerial photographs, remotely sensed images from satellites, a wide array of digital geographic and cartographic data, as well as the Bureau?s wellknown maps. Declassified photographs from early spy satellites were recently added to the ESIC offerings of historical images. Using the Aerial Photography Summary Record System database, ESIC researchers can help customers find imagery in the collections of other Federal agencies and, in some cases, those of private companies that specialize in esoteric products.","language":"ENGLISH","publisher":"Geological Survey (U.S.)","doi":"10.3133/fs12796","usgsCitation":"Water Resources Division, U.S. Geological Survey, 1997, Looking for an old aerial photograph: U.S. Geological Survey Fact Sheet 127-96, 2 p., https://doi.org/10.3133/fs12796.","productDescription":"2 p.","costCenters":[{"id":595,"text":"U.S. Geological Survey","active":false,"usgs":true}],"links":[{"id":182,"rank":100,"type":{"id":15,"text":"Index Page"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/fs/1996/0127/","linkFileType":{"id":5,"text":"html"}},{"id":122879,"rank":0,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/fs/1996/0127/report-thumb.jpg"},{"id":32096,"rank":300,"type":{"id":11,"text":"Document"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/fs/1996/0127/report.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}}],"noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e4a6fe4b07f02db640aa6","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Water Resources Division, U.S. Geological Survey","contributorId":128075,"corporation":true,"usgs":false,"organization":"Water Resources Division, U.S. Geological Survey","id":528649,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1}]}}

Three large hydroelectric dams are located near the mouth of the Susquehanna River. The three dams and associated reservoirs are Safe Harbor (Lake Clarke) and Holtwood (Lake Aldred) in southern Pennsylvania and Conowingo (Conowingo Reservoir) in northern Maryland. Two of these reservoirs, Lakes Clarke and Aldred, have reached a state of equilibrium with sediment transport in the river. The third, Conowingo Reservoir, continues to accumulate sediment as well as particulate organic nitrogen and particulate phosphorus. Bottom-elevation surveys of Conowingo Reservoir made in 1959, 1990, and 1993 indicate that the reservoir will reach equilibrium with sediment transport of the river during the next 10 to 20 years. Data collected from 1985-89 indicate that the Susquehanna River transports about 1,780 million pounds of sediment, 147 million pounds of nitrogen, and 5.1 million pounds of phosphorus to the Chesapeake Bay during a year of normal streamflow. Once equilibrium is reached in the Conowingo Reservoir, these loads may increase to levels currently transported by the river to the reservoirs, about 6,600 million pounds of sediment, 153 million pounds of nitrogen, and 9.1 million pounds of phosphorus per year. These higher loads may effect progress made on reducing nutrient loads and should be considered when planning future programs.","language":"English","publisher":"U.S. Geological Survey","doi":"10.3133/wri964048","usgsCitation":"Reed, L.A., and Hoffman, S.A., 1997, Sediment deposition in Lake Clarke, Lake Aldred, and Conowingo Reservoir, Pennsylvania and Maryland, 1910-93: U.S. Geological Survey Water-Resources Investigations Report 96-4048, Report: iv, 14 p.; 3 Plates: 24.21 × 30.90 inches or smaller, https://doi.org/10.3133/wri964048.","productDescription":"Report: iv, 14 p.; 3 Plates: 24.21 × 30.90 inches or smaller","costCenters":[{"id":532,"text":"Pennsylvania Water Science Center","active":true,"usgs":true}],"links":[{"id":276445,"type":{"id":17,"text":"Plate"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/wri/1996/4048/plate-2.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":276443,"type":{"id":11,"text":"Document"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/wri/1996/4048/report.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":159576,"rank":0,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/wri/1996/4048/report-thumb.jpg"},{"id":276446,"rank":3,"type":{"id":17,"text":"Plate"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/wri/1996/4048/plate-3.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":276444,"type":{"id":17,"text":"Plate"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/wri/1996/4048/plate-1.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":408396,"rank":6,"type":{"id":36,"text":"NGMDB Index Page"},"url":"https://ngmdb.usgs.gov/Prodesc/proddesc_48415.htm","linkFileType":{"id":5,"text":"html"}}],"country":"United States","state":"Maryland, Pennsylvania","otherGeospatial":"Conowingo Reservoir, Lake Aldred, Lake Clarke","geographicExtents":"{\n  \"type\": \"FeatureCollection\",\n  \"features\": [\n    {\n      \"type\": \"Feature\",\n      \"properties\": {},\n      \"geometry\": {\n        \"type\": \"Polygon\",\n        \"coordinates\": [\n          [\n            [\n              -76.5014,\n              39.6583\n            ],\n            [\n              -76.1667,\n              39.6583\n            ],\n            [\n              -76.1667,\n              40.0083\n            ],\n            [\n              -76.5014,\n              40.0083\n            ],\n            [\n              -76.5014,\n              39.6583\n            ]\n          ]\n        ]\n      }\n    }\n  ]\n}","noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e4a60e4b07f02db635082","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Reed, Lloyd A.","contributorId":79861,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Reed","given":"Lloyd","email":"","middleInitial":"A.","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":201307,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1},{"text":"Hoffman, Scott A. shoffman@usgs.gov","contributorId":2634,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Hoffman","given":"Scott","email":"shoffman@usgs.gov","middleInitial":"A.","affiliations":[{"id":532,"text":"Pennsylvania Water Science Center","active":true,"usgs":true}],"preferred":true,"id":201306,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":2}]}}
