These include garnet, chrome spinel, augite, pigeonite, diopside, hornblende, enstatite, hypersthene, epidote, clinozoisite, zoisite, apatite, tourmaline, chloritoid, sphene, zircon, and opaque minerals. Much rarer constituents are glaucophane, lamprobolite, rutile, kyanite, staurolite, and riebeckite.</p><p>The heavy-mineral fractions that were not treated with hydrochloric acid contain \"iron-stained aggregates\", grains of unidentifiable material encrusted with limonite. Samples containing relatively high percentages of iron-stained aggregates and altered opaque minerals occur in depths less than 10 m and within 16 km from shore.</p><p>Garnet increases in abundance from east to west, which corresponds to a similar increase in garnet abundance in coastal outcrops of the Gubik Formation sands. Only garnet and iron-stained aggregates appear to have source-related distribution patterns. The other heavy minerals lack distinct distributive provinces, reflecting an environment dominated by intense mixing by ice-gouging and bioturbation and a homogenous source area. Waves and currents are not strong enough to sort sediments at depths greater than 10 m except during summer storms.</p><p>The source of the Beaufort Sea heavy minerals is dominated by contributions from the Alaskan North Slope deposits of Tertiary and younger age. The Colville River, largest in the region, is probably the most influential in transporting sediments, but because of wave and current—mixing of sediments on the shelf, exact contributions from each river drainage cannot be ascertained. The 22 deep test wells that have been drilled since 1954 have been unsuccessful because structure is complex and because suitable reservoir rocks have not been found in favorable structural positions. Although it is possible that the factors controlling accumulation of petroleum may improve offshore, regional stratigraphic and structural considerations together with the limited geophysical data suggest that this is not necessarily the case. Ground-water yields are low and may be locally inadequate for single family requirements where wells produce from bedrock in the eastern Hillside region. At lower altitudes single family water requirements of 3 to 10 gallons per minute or 0.2 to 0.6 litre per second usually can be obtained, but aquifers capable of being pumped at larger yields for public supplies are uncommon. However, in a few localities, wells do produce 40 to 300 gallons per minute or 2.5 to 19 litres per second from sand and gravel aquifers lying within thick sequences of glacial till. Streamflow within the Hillside area is inadequate as a significant source of water for public supply. Springs, swamps, and water-logged surficial sediments in the Hillside area are mainly caused by hilly terrain and low permeability of surficial materials.</p><p>The relative vulnerability of streams, lakes, and ground water to pollution caused by the discharge of liquid waste, particularly from onsite sewage-disposal systems, is moderate to high in about half the study area. At higher altitudes contamination of bedrock aquifers may occur if discharge of liquid wastes is not regulated. The deep sedimentary aquifers at lower altitudes are less susceptible to contamination. The basins trend west to northwest and become increasingly marine from south to north. The Chukchi-Beaufort continental margin is similar to those of Atlantic type.</p><p>Hope basin, in the southern Chukchi Sea, overlies strongly deformed Paleozoic to mid-Cretaceous rocks of the Brooks Range orogen. The basin is inferred to contain nonmarine and marine clastic sedimentary rocks in a 1-km-thick Upper Cretaceous(?), a 1 1/2-km-thick Paleogene(?), and a 3/4-km-thick Neogene(?) sequence. A large anticline and many faults and smaller folds disrupt mainly the older sequences.</p><p>The Hope basin sedimentary units onlap Herald arch, which trends northwest from Cape Lisburne in the central Chukchi Sea. At the Herald fault zone Brooks Range rocks in the arch are thrust east or northeast over Mississippian to Jurassic shelf carbonate and clastic rocks of the Arctic Alaska (Ellesmerian) basin and overlying Cretaceous flysch and molasse of the Colville geosyncline. These Mississippian to Cretaceous rocks underlie the northeast Chukchi Sea and reportedly are about 10 km thick near the Herald fault zone on the Lisburne Peninsula. The great Chukchi syntaxis in western Brooks Range rocks and structures is thought to result from intersection of the west-trending Brooks Range orogen by the northwest-trending Herald fault zone.</p><p>The Mississippian to Jurassic shelf sequence thins northward, and onlaps the Barrow arch, which trends northwest from Point Barrow to 161° W.long., thence west-southwest to the Herald fault zone. The Colville geosyncline sequence oversteps both the pre-Cretaceous rocks and. the Barrow arch to form the North Chukchi basin west of 161°W. long. and the progradational Beaufort continental terrace east of it.</p><p>The North Chukchi basin may contain about 6 km of section, probably Cretaceous and Tertiary and possibly deltaic. Diapirs (of Cretaceous shale?) pierce the gently northward-dipping strata of this basin, in places reaching the sea floor.</p><p>Thick Tertiary marine and nonmarine clastic rocks of the Camden basin overlie the Cretaceous rocks of the North Slope and inner Beaufort continental terrace east of the Colville River delta. Experimental application of the technique to the analysis of 803 nonmagnetic concentrates from Alaska showed specific disadvantages owing to the insolubility of cassiterite--one of the major sources for indium in concentrates--under the conditions of dissolution used in the preparation of samples for analysis by atomic absorption. Where nonmagnetic concentrates are used as a geochemical sample medium, and an exploration program is based on the interpretation of multi-element data, little purpose is served by independent Within the Yakutat region are some of the tallest mountains, some of the heaviest snowfalls, and the largest glacier in North America. Between the abrupt mountain front and the Gulf of Alaska lies a very gently sloping plain of outwash derived from repeated cycles of advance followed by melt and retreat of glaciers during the Quaternary Period. The latest melting probably took place 500 to 600 years ago. Yakutat is built upon the moderately steep moraine that is the product of melting of one of these glaciers. Near Yakutat, surficial deposits are as much as 700 feet thick and probably overlie siltstone, sandstone, and mudstone.
