A U.S. Geological Survey rainfall-runoff model was calibrated using observed rainfall and streamflow data collected from March 1994 through September 1995. Standard errors for calibration were 34 percent for runoff volumes and 21 percent for peak flows. The calibrated model was used to simulate peak flows resulting from syn- thetic rainfall amounts of 1.0, 2.5, 5.0, and 7.5 inches in 24-hour periods. For each rainfall amount, peak flows were simulated under low-, moderate-, and high-antecedent soil-moisture conditions, represented by selected 3-month periods of daily rainfall and evaporation record from nearby climatic-data measuring stations. Simulated peak flows ranged from 89 to 10,100 cubic feet per second.\r\n\r\nProfiles of water-surface elevations for selected observed and simu- lated peak flows were computed for the reach of Scott Creek that flows through Sylva, North Carolina. The profiles were computed using the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers HEC-2 Water Surface Profiles computer program and channel cross-section data collected by the Tennessee Valley Authority. The stage-discharge relation for Scott Creek at the simulation site has changed since the collection of the cross-section data. These changes, however, are such that the water-surface profiles presented in this report likely overestimate the true water-surface elevations at the simulation site for a given peak flow","language":"ENGLISH","publisher":"U.S. Geological Survey ;\r\nInformation Services [distributor],","doi":"10.3133/wri964226","usgsCitation":"Pope, B., 1996, Simulated peak flows and water-surface profiles for Scott Creek near Sylva, North Carolina: U.S. Geological Survey Water-Resources Investigations Report 96-4226, iv, 15 p. :ill., map ;28 cm., https://doi.org/10.3133/wri964226.","productDescription":"iv, 15 p. :ill., map ;28 cm.","costCenters":[{"id":13634,"text":"South Atlantic Water Science Center","active":true,"usgs":true}],"links":[{"id":159659,"rank":0,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/wri/1996/4226/report-thumb.jpg"},{"id":58051,"rank":300,"type":{"id":11,"text":"Document"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/wri/1996/4226/report.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}}],"country":"United States","state":"North Carolina","county":"Jackson County","city":"Sylva","otherGeospatial":"Scott Creek","geographicExtents":"{\"type\":\"FeatureCollection\",\"features\":[{\"type\":\"Feature\",\"geometry\":{\"type\":\"Polygon\",\"coordinates\":[[[-83.1787,35.5197],[-83.1687,35.5104],[-83.1534,35.4954],[-83.1438,35.4948],[-83.1391,35.4917],[-83.1383,35.4858],[-83.1365,35.4682],[-83.1341,35.4664],[-83.1098,35.4652],[-83.0995,35.4623],[-83.0937,35.4584],[-83.0894,35.4508],[-83.0803,35.4478],[-83.0794,35.4392],[-83.0752,35.433],[-83.0654,35.4287],[-83.0546,35.4267],[-83.0529,35.4258],[-83.0451,35.4142],[-83.0446,35.4015],[-83.042,35.3943],[-83.0234,35.3807],[-83.0183,35.38],[-83.0081,35.3779],[-82.9983,35.3741],[-82.993,35.3693],[-82.9883,35.3635],[-82.9756,35.3424],[-82.9676,35.3377],[-82.9635,35.3196],[-82.9507,35.3104],[-82.9381,35.3057],[-82.9364,35.3044],[-82.9307,35.3032],[-82.9201,35.2911],[-82.9211,35.2739],[-82.9266,35.241],[-82.9318,35.2295],[-82.9384,35.2248],[-82.9578,35.2157],[-82.9608,35.2061],[-82.9859,35.1873],[-82.9875,35.1827],[-82.9836,35.1692],[-82.9951,35.163],[-82.9955,35.1566],[-82.9792,35.1448],[-82.9784,35.138],[-83.0446,35.0763],[-83.0522,35.0548],[-83.0401,35.0492],[-83.0359,35.0416],[-83.02,35.0379],[-83.0073,35.028],[-83.069,35.0118],[-83.1052,35.002],[-83.1076,35.0079],[-83.1094,35.011],[-83.1129,35.0141],[-83.1224,35.013],[-83.1314,35.0268],[-83.1341,35.0381],[-83.1499,35.054],[-83.1699,35.0608],[-83.1718,35.0671],[-83.1565,35.0775],[-83.1459,35.08],[-83.1451,35.0878],[-83.1494,35.0954],[-83.1758,35.1083],[-83.1868,35.1307],[-83.1962,35.1409],[-83.2126,35.1564],[-83.2246,35.1606],[-83.2178,35.2253],[-83.2274,35.24],[-83.2365,35.2425],[-83.2431,35.2382],[-83.2485,35.2326],[-83.272,35.2292],[-83.2862,35.2329],[-83.2898,35.236],[-83.2984,35.2548],[-83.3083,35.26],[-83.3149,35.2698],[-83.3126,35.2821],[-83.323,35.315],[-83.3317,35.3198],[-83.338,35.3336],[-83.3325,35.3515],[-83.3351,35.3596],[-83.3359,35.3637],[-83.3368,35.3718],[-83.3373,35.3841],[-83.342,35.3876],[-83.3462,35.3925],[-83.3492,35.4101],[-83.3521,35.4109],[-83.3572,35.4126],[-83.3601,35.4143],[-83.3625,35.4179],[-83.3633,35.422],[-83.3641,35.4274],[-83.3609,35.4316],[-83.3577,35.4362],[-83.3566,35.438],[-83.3573,35.4412],[-83.3566,35.4489],[-83.3506,35.4673],[-83.3467,35.4701],[-83.3412,35.4721],[-83.3384,35.4735],[-83.3367,35.4736],[-83.332,35.4701],[-83.3286,35.4683],[-83.3245,35.4666],[-83.3188,35.465],[-83.3143,35.4647],[-83.3111,35.4688],[-83.3087,35.4794],[-83.3031,35.4813],[-83.2971,35.4842],[-83.2936,35.4834],[-83.2903,35.4853],[-83.2877,35.4895],[-83.2861,35.4927],[-83.283,35.4982],[-83.2746,35.5016],[-83.2719,35.5049],[-83.2648,35.5096],[-83.2621,35.5133],[-83.257,35.513],[-83.2537,35.5145],[-83.2481,35.5164],[-83.2426,35.5189],[-83.2393,35.5221],[-83.2315,35.5251],[-83.2248,35.5262],[-83.2181,35.5277],[-83.2124,35.5261],[-83.2088,35.5212],[-83.1975,35.5215],[-83.1854,35.5177],[-83.1787,35.5197]]]},\"properties\":{\"name\":\"Jackson\",\"state\":\"NC\"}}]}","noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e49f9e4b07f02db5f323e","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Pope, B.F.","contributorId":10062,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Pope","given":"B.F.","email":"","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":201097,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1}]}}

Shield-building lavas emanated mainly from the rift zones of the volcanoes. Subaerial eruptions of the Waianae Volcano occurred between 3.9 and 2.5 million years ago, and eruptions of the Koolau Volcano occurred between 2.6 and 1.8 million years ago. The volcanoes have subsided more then 6,000 feet, and erosion has destroyed all but the western rim of the Koolau Volcano and the eastern part of the Waianae Volcano, represented by the Koolau and Waianae Ranges, respectively.\r\n\r\nHydraulic properties of the volcanic-rock aquifers are determined by the distinctive textures and geometry of individual lava flows. Individual lava flows are characterized by intergranular, fracture, and conduit-type porosity and commonly are highly permeable. The stratified nature of the lava flows imparts a layered heterogeneity. The flows are anisotropic in three dimensions, with the largest permeability in the longitudinal direction of the lava flow, an intermediate permeability in the direction transverse to the flow, and the smallest permeability normal to bedding. Averaged over several lava-flow thicknesses, lateral hydraulic conductivity of dike-free lava flows is about 500 to 5,000 feet per day, with smaller and larger values not uncommon. Systematic areal variations in lava-flow thickness or other properties may impart trends in the heterogeneity.\r\n\r\nThe aquifers of Oahu contain two flow regimes: shallow freshwater and deep saltwater. The freshwater floats on underlying saltwater in a condition of buoyant displacement, although the relation is not necessarily a simple hydrostatic balance everywhere. Natural driving mechanisms for freshwater and saltwater flow differ. Freshwater moves mainly by simple gravity flow; meteoric water flows from inland recharge areas at higher altitudes to discharge areas at lower altitudes near the coast. Remnant volcanic heat also may drive geothermal convection of freshwater in the rift zones. Saltwater flow is driven by changes in freshwater volume and sea level and by dispersive and geothermal convection. Freshwater flow is much more active--velocity is higher and residence time is shorter--than saltwater flow. Hydrodynamic dispersion produces a transition zone of mixed water between the freshwater and the underlying saltwater.\r\n\r\nThe Waianae aquifer in the Waianae Volcanics and the Koolau aquifer in the Koolau Basalt are the two principal volcanic-rock aquifers on Oahu. The sequences of coastal-plain and valley-fill deposits locally form aquifers, but these aquifers are of minor importance because of the small volume of water contained in them. The two principal volcanic-rock aquifers are composed mainly of thick sequences of permeable, thin-bedded lava flows. These aquifers combine to form a layered aquifer system throughout central Oahu where the Koolau aquifer overlies the Waianae aquifer. They are separated by a regional confining unit formed by weathering along the Waianae-Koolau unconformity, which marks the eroded and weathered surface of the Waianae Volcano buried by younger Koolau lava flows.\r\n\r\nThe areal hydraulic continuity of the aquifers of Oahu is interrupted in many places by steeply dipping, stratigraphically unconformable, geohydrologic barriers. These low-permeability features include eruptive feeder dikes, sedimentary valley fills, and former erosional surfaces now buried by younger lava flows or sediments. The barriers impede and divert lateral ground-water flow and impound ground water to greater heights than would occur in the absence of the barriers, causing abrupt stepped discontinuities in the potentiometric surface. The largest discontinuities are associated with dense concentrations of dikes in the eruptive rift zones of each volcano. The dikes in these zones originate from great depths and impede flow both in shallow-freshwater and in deep-saltwater flow sy","largerWorkType":{"id":18,"text":"Report"},"largerWorkTitle":"REGIONAL AQUIFER-SYSTEM ANALYSIS-OAHU, HAWAII","largerWorkSubtype":{"id":5,"text":"USGS Numbered Series"},"language":"ENGLISH","publisher":"U.S. Geological Survey","doi":"10.3133/pp1412B","usgsCitation":"Hunt, C.D., 1996, Geohydrology of the Island of Oahu, Hawaii: U.S. Geological Survey Professional Paper 1412, vi, 55 p., https://doi.org/10.3133/pp1412B.","productDescription":"vi, 55 p.","costCenters":[{"id":525,"text":"Pacific Islands Water Science Center","active":true,"usgs":true}],"links":[{"id":118054,"rank":0,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/pp/1412b/report-thumb.jpg"},{"id":32955,"rank":300,"type":{"id":11,"text":"Document"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/pp/1412b/report.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}}],"geographicExtents":"{ \"type\": \"FeatureCollection\", \"features\": [ { \"type\": \"Feature\", \"properties\": {}, \"geometry\": { \"type\": \"Polygon\", \"coordinates\": [ [ [ -158.33333333333334,21.25 ], [ -158.33333333333334,21.75 ], [ -157.58333333333334,21.75 ], [ -157.58333333333334,21.25 ], [ -158.33333333333334,21.25 ] ] ] } } ] }","noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e4b1be4b07f02db6a8941","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Hunt, Charles D. Sampling methods differ among agencies, reflecting the differences in the sampling objectives of each agency. Lack of infor- mation about data comparability impedes data shar- ing among agencies, which can result in duplicated sampling efforts or the underutilization of avail- able information. To address these concerns, com- parisons were made of macroinvertebrate samples collected from wadeable streams in Wisconsin by personnel from the U.S. Geological Survey- National Water Quality Assessment Program (USGS-NAWQA), the Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources (WDNR), the U.S. Department of Agriculture-Forest Service (USDA-FS), and volunteers from the Water Action Volunteer-Water Quality Monitoring Program (WAV). This project was part of the Intergovernmental Task Force on Monitoring Water Quality (ITFM) Wisconsin Water Resources Coordination Project. The numbers, types, and environmental tolerances of the organ- isms collected were analyzed to determine if the four different field methods that were used by the different agencies and volunteer groups provide comparable results. The model computes changes in concentration of a single dissolved chemical constituent over time that are caused by advective transport, hydrodynamic dispersion (including both mechanical dispersion and diffusion), mixing (or dilution) from fluid sources, and mathematically simple chemical reactions (including linear sorption, which is represented by a retardation factor, and decay). The transport model is integrated with MODFLOW, a three-dimensional ground-water flow model that uses implicit finite-difference methods to solve the transient flow equation. MOC3D uses the method of characteristics to solve the transport equation on the basis of the hydraulic gradients computed with MODFLOW for a given time step. This implementation of the method of characteristics uses particle tracking to represent advective transport and explicit finite-difference methods to calculate the effects of other processes. However, the explicit procedure has several stability criteria that may limit the size of time increments for solving the transport equation; these are automatically determined by the program. For improved efficiency, the user can apply MOC3D to a subgrid of the primary MODFLOW grid that is used to solve the flow equation. However, the transport subgrid must have uniform grid spacing along rows and columns. The report includes a description of the theoretical basis of the model, a detailed description of input requirements and output options, and the results of model testing and evaluation. The model was evaluated for several problems for which exact analytical solutions are available and by benchmarking against other numerical codes for selected complex problems for which no exact solutions are available. These test results indicate that the model is very accurate for a wide range of conditions and yields minimal numerical dispersion for advection-dominated problems. Mass-balance errors are generally less than 10 percent, and tend to decrease and stabilize with time.
","language":"English","publisher":"U.S. Geological Survey","publisherLocation":"Reston, VA","doi":"10.3133/wri964267","usgsCitation":"Konikow, L.F., Goode, D., and Hornberger, G., 1996, A three-dimensional method-of-characteristics solute-transport model (MOC3D): U.S. Geological Survey Water-Resources Investigations Report 96-4267, Report: x, 87 p.; HTML, https://doi.org/10.3133/wri964267.","productDescription":"Report: x, 87 p.; HTML","costCenters":[{"id":532,"text":"Pennsylvania Water Science Center","active":true,"usgs":true},{"id":589,"text":"Toxic Substances Hydrology Program","active":true,"usgs":true}],"links":[{"id":119971,"rank":0,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/wri/1996/4267/report-thumb.jpg"},{"id":2162,"rank":100,"type":{"id":15,"text":"Index Page"},"url":"https://water.usgs.gov/software/moc3d.html","linkFileType":{"id":5,"text":"html"}},{"id":56938,"rank":300,"type":{"id":11,"text":"Document"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/wri/1996/4267/report.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}}],"noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e4b16e4b07f02db6a563a","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Konikow, Leonard F. 0000-0002-0940-3856 lkonikow@usgs.gov","orcid":"https://orcid.org/0000-0002-0940-3856","contributorId":158,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Konikow","given":"Leonard","email":"lkonikow@usgs.gov","middleInitial":"F.","affiliations":[{"id":436,"text":"National Research Program - Eastern Branch","active":true,"usgs":true}],"preferred":true,"id":199233,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1},{"text":"Goode, D.J. 0000-0002-8527-2456","orcid":"https://orcid.org/0000-0002-8527-2456","contributorId":95512,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Goode","given":"D.J.","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":199235,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":2},{"text":"Hornberger, G.Z.","contributorId":71582,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Hornberger","given":"G.Z.","email":"","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":199234,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":3}]}}

Ninety-one species of fish with representatives from 18 families were collected in the basin. Total numbers of fish collected at every site increased between collection years. The Index of Biological Integrity (IBI) and Qualitative Habitat Evaluation Index (QHEI) were calculated for all 11 sites in 1995. The QHEI scores indicated six sites had excellent habitat to support fish communities. Only three sites were rated in the “good” to “excellent” IBI water-quality categories, indicating some type of nonhabitat environmental degradation to the fish communities. Ground-water withdrawals in Baldwin County were estimated to be about 7 million gallons per day in 1996, 12 million gallons per day in 1980, and 30 gallons per day in 1990. The effects of future increases in ground-water withdrawals, to supply the needs of the growing county population, cannot be assessed without defining baseline conditions. Testing and disposal activities weresuspected of causing environmental contamination at 16 sites on the island. The hydrogeology and chemical quality of ground water, surface water, and soil at these sites were investigated with borehole logs, environmental samples, water-level measurements, and hydrologic tests. A surficial aquifer, upper confining unit, and upper confined aquifer were defined. Ground water in the surficial aquifer generally flows from the east-central part of the island toward the surface-water bodies, butgradient reversals caused by evapotranspiration can occur during dry seasons. In the confined aquifer, hydraulic gradients are low, and hydraulic head is affected by tidal loading and by seasonal pumpage from the west. Inorganic chemistry in the aquifers is affected by brackish-water intrusion from gradient reversals and by dissolution ofcarboniferous shell material in the confining unit.The concentrations of most inorganic constituents probably resulted from natural processes, but some concentrations exceeded Federal water-quality regulations and criteria. Organic compounds were detected in water and soil samples at maximum concentrations of 138 micrograms per liter (thiodiglycol in surface water) and 12 micrograms per gram (octadecanoic acid in soil).Concentrations of organic compounds in ground water exceeded Federal drinking-water regulations at two sites. The organic compounds that weredetected in environmental samples were variously attributed to natural processes, laboratory or field- sampling contamination, fallout from industrial air pollution, and historical military activities.","language":"ENGLISH","publisher":"U.S. Dept. of the Interior, U.S. Geological Survey ;\r\nBranch of Information Services [distributor],","doi":"10.3133/wri964169","usgsCitation":"Tenbus, F., and Phillips, S., 1996, Hydrogeology and chemical quality of water and soil at Carroll Island, Aberdeen Proving Ground, Maryland: U.S. Geological Survey Water-Resources Investigations Report 96-4169, viii, 156 p. :ill., maps ;28 cm., https://doi.org/10.3133/wri964169.","productDescription":"viii, 156 p. :ill., maps ;28 cm.","costCenters":[],"links":[{"id":125027,"rank":0,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/wri/1996/4169/report-thumb.jpg"},{"id":58904,"rank":300,"type":{"id":11,"text":"Document"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/wri/1996/4169/report.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}}],"noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e4a4de4b07f02db6275d5","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Tenbus, F.J.","contributorId":45730,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Tenbus","given":"F.J.","email":"","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":202660,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1},{"text":"Phillips, S.W.","contributorId":6867,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Phillips","given":"S.W.","email":"","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":202659,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":2}]}}

The basin is defined as \r\nthe extent of Cenozoic deposits that encompass the structural Rio \r\nGrande Rift within the basin. Drinking-water supplies throughout \r\nthe Albuquerque Basin are currently (1996) obtained solely from \r\nground-water resources. The population of the basin grew from \r\n419,000 in 1980 to 563,600 in 1990, a 34-percent increase, and \r\nresulted in increases in water demand and ground-water pumpage. \r\nBetween April 1982 and September 1983, a network of wells was \r\nestablished to monitor changes in ground-water levels throughout \r\nthe Albuquerque Basin. Water-level data were collected at 74 \r\nwells and piezometers for the period of record through September \r\n30, 1995, in the Albuquerque Basin. Water-level data are \r\ncurrently (1996) collected annually at sites 11 and 39; \r\nsemiannually at sites 1-10; quarterly at sites 12, 13, 26, 36-38, \r\n40, 43, 49-51, 64-67, 69, and 71-74; and monthly at sites 14-25, \r\n33-35, 41, 52-63, and 68.","language":"ENGLISH","publisher":"U.S. Geological Survey ;\r\nBranch of Information Services [distributor],","doi":"10.3133/ofr96664A","issn":"0094-9140","usgsCitation":"Rankin, D.R., 1996, Water-level data for the Albuquerque Basin, New Mexico, period of record through September 30, 1995: U.S. Geological Survey Open-File Report 96-664, v, 28 p. :ill., maps ;28 cm., https://doi.org/10.3133/ofr96664A.","productDescription":"v, 28 p. :ill., maps ;28 cm.","costCenters":[],"links":[{"id":155041,"rank":0,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1996/0664a/report-thumb.jpg"},{"id":53401,"rank":300,"type":{"id":11,"text":"Document"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1996/0664a/report.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}}],"noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e4a08e4b07f02db5fa4c1","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Rankin, Dale R.","contributorId":50924,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Rankin","given":"Dale","email":"","middleInitial":"R.","affiliations":[{"id":472,"text":"New Mexico Water Science Center","active":true,"usgs":true}],"preferred":false,"id":191622,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1}]}}

Both cities are near the centers of large (greater than 150 feet) potentiometric declines in the Middendorf aquifer. In 1989, the diameter of the depressions was approximately 40 miles at Charleston and 15 miles at Florence. The potentiometric decline occurred between predevelopment (1926) and 1982 near Florence, and between predevelopment (1879) and 1989 near Charleston. The city of Charleston does not withdraw water from these aquifers; however, some of the small communities in the area use these aquifers for a potable water supply. The model simulates flow in and between four aquifer systems. The model has a variable-cell-size grid, and spans the Coastal Plain from the Savannah River in the southwest to the Cape Fear Arch in the northeast, and from the Fall Line in the northwest to approximately 30 miles offshore to the southeast. Model-grid cell size is 1 by 1 mile in a 48 by 48 mile area centered in Charleston, and in a 36 by 48 mile area centered in Florence. The model cell size gradually increases to a maximum of 4 by 4 miles outside the two study areas. The entire grid consists of 115 by 127 cells and covers an area of 39,936 square miles. The model was calibrated to historical water-level data. The calibration relied on three techniques: (1) matching simulated and observed potentiometric map surfaces, (2) statistical comparison of observed and simulated heads, and (3) comparison of observed and simulated well hydrographs. Systematic changes in model parameters showed that simulated heads are most sensitive to changes in aquifer transmissivity. Eight predictive ground-water-use scenarios were simulated for the Mount Pleasant area, which presently (1993) uses the Middendorf aquifer as a sole-source of potable water. These simulations use various combinations of spatial distribution, and injection of treated wastewater effluent for existing and future Middendorf aquifer wells.","language":"English","publisher":"U.S. Geological Survey ","doi":"10.3133/wri964050","usgsCitation":"Campbell, B.G., and van Heeswijk, M., 1996, Ground-water hydrology, historical water use, and simulated ground-water flow in Cretaceous-age Coastal Plain aquifers near Charleston and Florence, South Carolina: U.S. Geological Survey Water-Resources Investigations Report 96-4050, viii, 100 p. , https://doi.org/10.3133/wri964050.","productDescription":"viii, 100 p. These studies were done to determine whether irrigation drainage was causing problems related to human health, water quality, and fish and wildlife resources. Results of a study in 1991-93 of irrigation drainage associated with the Uncompahgre Project area, located in the lower Gunnison River Basin, and of the Grand Valley, located along the Colorado River, are described in this report. The focus of the report is on the sources, distribution, movement, and fate of selenium in the hydrologic and biological systems and the effects on biota. Generally, other trace- constituent concentrations in water and biota were not elevated or were not at levels of concern.

Soils in the Uncompahgre Project area that primarily were derived from Mancos Shale contained the highest concentrations of total and watrer-extractable selenium. Only 5 of 128 alfalfa samples had selenium concentrations that exceeded a recommended dietary limit for livestock. Selenium data for soil and alfalfa indicate that irrigation might be mobilizing and redistributing selenium in the Uncompahgre Project area.

Distribution of dissolved selenium in ground water is affected by the aqueous geochemical environment of the shallow ground- water system. Selenium concentrations were as high as 1,300 micrograms per liter in water from shallow wells. The highest concentrations of dissolved selenium were in water from wells completed in alluvium overlying the Mancos Shale of Cretaceous age; selenium concentrations were lower in water from wells completed in Mancos Shale residuum. Selenium in the study area could be mobilized by oxidation of reduced selenium, desorption from aquifer sediments, ion exchange, and dissolution. Infiltration of irrigation water and, perhaps nitrate, provide oxidizing conditions for mobilization of selenium from alluvium and shale residuum and for transport to streams and irrigation drains that are tributary to the Gunnison, Uncompahgre, and Colorado Rivers.

Selenium concentrations in about 64 percent of water samples collected from the lower Gunnison River and about 50 percent of samples from the Colorado River near the Colorado-Utah State line exceeded the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency criterion of 5 micrograms per liter for protection of aquatic life. Almost all selenium concentrations in samples collected during the nonirrigation season from Mancos Shale areas exceeded the aquatic-life criterion. The maximum selenium concentrations in surface-water samples were 600 micrograms per liter in the Uncompahgre Project area and 380 micrograms per liter in the Grand Valley.

Irrigation drainage from the Uncompahgre Project and the Grand Valley might account for as much as 75 percent of the selenium load in the Colorado River near the Colorado-Utah State line. The primary source areas of selenium were the eastern side of the Uncompahgre Project and the western one-half of the Grand Valley, where there is extensive irrigation on soils derived from Mancos Shale. The largest mean selenium loads from tributary drainages were 14.0 pounds per day from Loutsenhizer Arroyo in the Uncompahgre Project and 12.8 pounds per day from Reed Wash in the Grand Valley. Positive correlations between selenium loads and dissolved-solids loads could indicate that salinity-control projects designed to decrease dissolved-solids loads also could decrease selenium loads from the irrigated areas. Selenium concentrations in irrigation drainage in the Grand Valley were much higher than concentrations predicted by simple evaporative concentration of irrigation source water. Selenium probably is removed from pond water by chemical and biological processes and incorporated into bottom sediment. The maximum selenium concentration in bottom sediment was 47 micrograms per gram from a pond on the eastern side of the Uncompahgre Project.
","language":"English","publisher":"U.S. Geological Survey","doi":"10.3133/wri964138","usgsCitation":"Butler, D.L., Wright, W.G., Stewart, K.C., Osmundson, B.C., Krueger, R.P., and Crabtree, D., 1996, Detailed study of selenium and other constituents in water, bottom sediment, soil, alfalfa, and biota associated with irrigation drainage in the Uncompahgre Project area and in the Grand Valley, west-central Colorado, 1991-93: U.S. Geological Survey Water-Resources Investigations Report 96-4138, ix, 136 p., https://doi.org/10.3133/wri964138.","productDescription":"ix, 136 p.","costCenters":[],"links":[{"id":123072,"rank":1,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/wri/1996/4138/report-thumb.jpg"},{"id":54166,"rank":2,"type":{"id":11,"text":"Document"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/wri/1996/4138/report.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":465849,"rank":3,"type":{"id":36,"text":"NGMDB Index Page"},"url":"https://ngmdb.usgs.gov/Prodesc/proddesc_48486.htm","text":"Grand Valley area","linkFileType":{"id":5,"text":"html"}},{"id":465850,"rank":4,"type":{"id":36,"text":"NGMDB Index Page"},"url":"https://ngmdb.usgs.gov/Prodesc/proddesc_48487.htm","text":"Uncompahgre area","linkFileType":{"id":5,"text":"html"}}],"noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e48b1e4b07f02db530813","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Butler, D.
