The assessment of the 17,600-km 2 16,800-mi21 quadrangle is based on field and laboratory investigations of the geology, geochemistry, geophysics, and satellite imagery. The results of the investigations are published as a folio of maps, diagrams, and accompanying discussions. This report provides background information on the investigations and integrates the published components of the resource assessment. The listings in tables 2 and 3 follow the format of Special Report 10. The table includes 726 mineral and whole-rock dates determined by the K-Ar, Rb-Sr, fission-track U-Pb, and Pb-alpha techniques.</p><p>The data are organized in alphabetical order of the 1:250,000 scale quadrangles in which the dated rocks are located. The latitude and longitude of each sample are given. In addition, each sample is located on a 1:250,000 quadrangle map by a grid system. The initial point of the grid is taken as the southwest corner of the quadrangle and the location of the sample is measured in inches east and inches north from that corner, e.g., \"156E 126N\" indicated 15.6 inches east and 12.6 inches north of the southwest corner of the quadrangle. Zeroes in the location columns for some dates indicate that accurate locations are not available.</p><p>Rock type, dating method, mineral dated, radiometric age, sample identification number, and reference are also listed where possible. Short comments, mostly geographic locality names, are given for some dates. These comments have been taken from the original references.</p><p>Sample identification numbers beginning with \"AA\" or \"BB\" have been assigned arbitrarily in cases where sample numbers were not assigned in the original references. The basic fault monitor Geodimeter network now covers most of the major faults in California as well as the zone of faulting that extends into Nevada. Isolated Geodimeter networks in seismic areas of Montana, New Mexico, Utah, and Washington are also monitored. Part of the Geodimeter network along the San Andreas fault has been monitored for over 15 yr, and there appears to be a systematic deviation from a linear trend for most of the lines [</span><i>Greensfelder and Bennett</i><span>, 1973;&nbsp;</span><i>Savage et al.</i><span>, 1973]. However, this deviation may be an artifact of a change in survey procedures in mid‐1969. The conclusions that can be drawn from the Geodimeter observations at present are the following: (1) The present apparent interplate motion across the San Andreas fault in central California is only 30–40 mm/yr [</span><i>Savage and Burford</i><span>, 1973], in contrast to the average of 50–60 mm/yr as estimated from magnetic anomalies at the mouth of the Gulf of California. (2) Measurements of fault creep on the creeping segment of the San Andreas fault agree reasonably well with the plate movement indicated by geodetic measurements, this agreement suggesting that fault creep on this segment is the principal mode of accommodation [</span><i>Savage and Burford</i><span>, 1971]. (3) The rate of strain accumulation along the San Andreas fault is not well measured anywhere, but the overall tensor strain rate appears to be about 0.3 microstrain/yr or less [</span><i>Savage et al.</i><span>, 1973]. A considerable effort has also been expended reanalyzing old triangulation data for networks that cross the San Andreas fault. In such a study,&nbsp;</span><i>Thatcher</i><span>&nbsp;[1974] deduced evidence for several meters of afterslip on the San Andreas fault at depths greater than 10 km following the 1906 earthquake. This appears at the surface as a very rapid accumulation of strain in the years immediately following the earthquake.&nbsp;</span><i>Meade</i><span>&nbsp;[1974] has called attention to a remarkably uniform change of the astronomic azimuth with time for a line that crosses the San Andreas fault about 35 km south of the southern terminus of the 1906 rupture. This change of azimuth implies a uniform right lateral motion across the fault amounting to 32 mm/yr in the period 1885–1962. By comparing a 1942 triangulation survey and a 1970 Geodimeter survey,&nbsp;</span><i>Page</i><span>&nbsp;[1972] found neither lateral slip nor shear strain accumulation consistent with lateral slip across the Denali fault in Alaska. Cores recovered from the test hole show that the section is dominated by calc-magnesian rocks with subordinate pelitic schists. Pelitic mineral assemblages define a progressive increase in metamorphic grade with depth, from the garnet to the kyanite isograd. Diopside first appears in the calc-magnesian schists that were cored at a depth of 9,766 ft (2,976.5 m), indicating the onset of the reaction: Tremolite + 3 calcite -f- 2 quartz→5 diopside + 3CO<sub>2</sub> +H<sub>2</sub>O. Ubiquitous staurolite and rare andalusite occur in the kyanite-bearing pelitic schists. Andalusite appears to have crystallized under postkinematic conditions, and the staurolite is apparently of both synkinematic and postkinematic origin. Hornblende and biotite from calc-magnesian schists sampled at depths of 7,142½ ft (2,176.9 m) and 9,766 ft (2,976.5 m) gave <sup>40</sup>K/<sup>40</sup>Ar ages of 140±8 and 57.3±1.9 m.y., respectively. The hornblende age is believed to represent the age of the latest synkinematic metamorphism, and the biotite age appears to be an anomalously young one related to the outgassing of argon from biotite at greater depth in the section. Granitic plutons are common to all the provinces, and the hot springs are spatially associated with the contacts of these plutons. Of 23 hot springs whose bedrock geology is known, all are within 4.8 km (3 mi) of a granitic pluton. The occurrence of hot springs, however, appears to be independent of the age, composition, or magmatic history of the pluton. Most of the analyzed hot springs appear to have chemical and isotopic compositions indicating that they were derived from deeply circulating meteoric water. About 25 percent of the analyzed hot springs show a distinct saline character with high concentrations of chloride, sodium, potassium, and calcium indicating either much more complex water-rock reactions than in the other hot springs or the addition of another type of water. Chemical geothermometers suggest subsurface temperatures in the general range of 70° to 160°C. If the hot spring waters have derived their heat solely from deep circulation, they must have reached depths of 2 to 5 km (6,000-15,000 ft), assuming geothermal gradients of 30° to 50°C/km. If a shallow igneous heat source exists in the area or if dilution or mixing has occurred, these depths may be shallower. The 1974 surveys and photographs show some of the channel changes wrought by construction of the haul road from the Yukon River to Prudhoe Bay and by construction of camps and working pads all along the pipeline route. No pipeline crossings were constructed before 1975. Values are highest in modern beach (maximum 1.3 and mean 0.22 p.p.m. Hg) and nearshore subsurface gravels (maximum 0.6 and mean 0.06 p.p.m. Hg) along the highly mineralized Seward Peninsula and in clayey silt rich in organic matter (maximum 0.16 and mean 0.10 p.p.m. Hg) throughout the region. Although gold mining may be partly responsible for high mercury levels in the modern beach near Nome, Alaska (maximum 0.45 p.p.m.), equally high or greater concentrations of mercury occur in buried Pleistocene sediments immediately offshore (maximum 0.6 p.p.m.) and in modern unpolluted beach sediments at Bluff (maximum 1.3 p.p.m.); this suggests that the contamination effects of mining may be no greater than natural concentration processes in the Seward Peninsula region. The mercury content of offshore surface sediment, even adjacent to mercury-rich beaches, corresponds to that of unpolluted marine and fresh-water sediment elsewhere. The normal values that prevail offshore may be attributable to entrapment of mercury-bearing heavy minerals on beaches near sources and/or dilution effects of offshore sedimentation. The few minor anomalies offshore occur in glacial drift derived from mercury source regions of Chukotka (Siberia) and Seward Peninsula; Pleistocene shoreline processes have reworked the drift to concentrate the heavy metals. The fossiliferous sediments lie at the inner edge of the York Terrace, a deformed wave-cut platform that extends eastward from Bering Strait along much of the southern coast of Seward Peninsula. The seaward margin is truncated by the little-deformed Lost River Terrace, carved during the Pelukian (Sangamonian) transgression. The early Pleistocene sediments seem to have been deposited between the first and second of four glaciations for which evidence can be found in the California River area.</p><p>The California River fauna includes several extinct species and several species now confined to areas as remote as the northwestern Pacific and north Atlantic. The fauna probably lived in water temperatures much like those of the present time but deeper water on the Bering Shelf is suggested.</p><p>The presence of an early Pleistocene fauna at the inner edge of the York Terrace at California River shows that the terrace was largely carved before and during early Pleistocene time. However, a marine fauna apparently of middle Pleistocene age is found on the York Terrace near Cassiterite Peak, and this seems to indicate that the terrace remained low until middle Pleistocene time. Uplift of the York Terrace probably was accompanied by uplift of Bering Strait.
