These may be used as reference reaches for estimating Manning's roughness coefficient, n, in similar rivers and channels. Discharge in these reaches ranged from 1.8 to 3,010 cubic feet per second and water-surface slope ranged from 0.00002 to 0.00476 foot per foot. Sites were selected at or near U.S. Geological Survey streamflow gaging stations at which the stage-discharge relations were relatively stable. Crest-stage gages were installed at appropriate locations in each study reach in order to obtain water-surface elevations. Water-surface profiles were collected over a range of discharges at each of the 10 sites and the roughness coefficient was computed for each discharge. For the 104 recorded streamflow events used in this report, the computed roughness coefficients ranged from 0.021 to 0.218 and the mean was 0.072 . The median n value was 0.060; 70 percent of the time the n value was greater than 0.047 and 80 percent of the time the computed n was greater than 0.043. Bed material is so uniform at sites throughout west-central Florida that there is negligible variation in roughness as a result of variation in bed material. Streambank vegetation appears to be the major contributor to variations in roughness values for streams in west-central Florida. Channel roughness can be estimated quantitatively by evaluating the interaction of all roughness factors. Photographs of sites where n values have been computed can be used for comparison to estimate values at similar sites. Using a base n value of 0.040 and increasing n for factors of vegetation, channel obstructions, and other factors provides the best determination of n values for streams in west-central Florida.","language":"ENGLISH","publisher":"U.S. Geological Survey ;\r\nBranch of Information Services [distributor],","doi":"10.3133/ofr96226","issn":"0094-9140","usgsCitation":"Gillen, D., 1996, Determination of roughness coefficients for streams in west-central Florida: U.S. Geological Survey Open-File Report 96-226, viii, 93 p. :ill. Long-term goals of the NAWQA program are to describe the status and trends in the quality of a large, representative part of the Nation's surface-water and ground-water resources and to describe the primary natural and human factors that affect these resources. One of the first assessment phases of the NAWQA program is to examine the occurrence and distribution of organic and inorganic constituents in streambed sediment. Streambed sediment was collected at 22 stations in the Albemarle-Pamlico drainage basin that drains into the Albemarle and Pamlico Sounds, the second largest estuarine system in the United States. Streambed-sediment samples were analyzed for 35 organochlorine and 63 semivolatile compounds; 44 major, minor, and trace elements; and forms of organic carbon.","language":"ENGLISH","publisher":"U.S. The study was conducted during 1987-90 by the U.S. Geological Survey, in cooperation with the New Jersey Department of Environmental Protection and Energy. The effects of recent and anticipated ground-water withdrawals on water levels, stream base flows, and water budgets were estimated. Simulation results indicate that recent withdrawals of 4.7 million gallons per day have resulted in water-level declines of up to 35 feet. Under conditions of increases in withdrawals of 121 percent, water levels would decline up to an additional 28 feet. The magnitude of predicted average base-flow depletion, when compared with historic low flows, indicates that projected increases in withdrawals may substantially deplete seasonal low flow of Drakes Brook and South Branch Raritan River. Results of a water-budget analysis indicate that the sources of water to additional supply wells would include leakage from the overlying valley-fill aquifer and induced leakage of surface water into the aquifer system. Results of water-quality analyses indicate that human activities are affecting the quality of the ground water. With the exception of an elevated iron concentration in water from one well, concentrations of inorganic constituents in water from 75 wells did not exceed New Jersey primary or secondary drinking-water regulations. Volatile organic compounds were detected in water from several wells; in two samples, concentrations of specific compounds exceeded drinking-water regulations.","language":"ENGLISH","publisher":"U.S. Dept. of the Interior, U.S. Geological Survey ;\r\nEarth Science Information Center, Open-File Reports Section, [distributor],","doi":"10.3133/wri934157","usgsCitation":"Nicholson, R., McAuley, S.D., Barringer, J.L., and Gordon, A., 1996, Hydrogeology of, and ground-water flow in, a valley-fill and carbonate-rock aquifer system near Long Valley in the New Jersey Highlands: U.S. Geological Survey Water-Resources Investigations Report 93-4157, ix, 159 p. :ill., maps ;28 cm., https://doi.org/10.3133/wri934157.","productDescription":"ix, 159 p. :ill., maps ;28 cm.","costCenters":[],"links":[{"id":110268,"rank":700,"type":{"id":15,"text":"Index Page"},"url":"https://ngmdb.usgs.gov/Prodesc/proddesc_47858.htm","linkFileType":{"id":5,"text":"html"},"description":"47858"},{"id":121723,"rank":0,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/wri/1993/4157/report-thumb.jpg"},{"id":54302,"rank":400,"type":{"id":17,"text":"Plate"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/wri/1993/4157/plate-1.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":54303,"rank":401,"type":{"id":17,"text":"Plate"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/wri/1993/4157/plate-2.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":54304,"rank":402,"type":{"id":17,"text":"Plate"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/wri/1993/4157/plate-3.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":54305,"rank":300,"type":{"id":11,"text":"Document"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/wri/1993/4157/report.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}}],"noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e4a2de4b07f02db614946","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Nicholson, R.S.","contributorId":67125,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Nicholson","given":"R.S.","email":"","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":194282,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1},{"text":"McAuley, S. The data were collected to establish the water quality of the Ohio River and to use in assessing the proposed effects of hydropower development on the water quality of the Ohio River. Water quality was monitored by a combination of synoptic field measurements, laboratory analyses, and continuous- record monitoring. Field measurements of water- quality characteristics were made along a longitudinal transect with 24 mid-channel sampling sites; cross-sectional transects of water-quality measurements were made at six of these sites. Water-quality measurements also were made at six sites located on the back-channel (West Virginia) sides of Marietta, Muskingum, and Blennerhassett Islands. At each longitudinal-transect and back- channel sampling site, measurements of specific conductance, pH, water temperature, and dissolved oxygen concentration were made at three depths (about 3.3 feet below the surface of the water, middle of the water column, and near the bottom of the river). Cross-sectional transects consisted of three to four detailed vertical profiles of the same characteristics. Water samples were collected at three depths in the mid-channel vertical profile in each cross-sectional transect and were analyzed for concentrations of phytoplankton chlorophyll a and chlorophyll b. Estimates of the depth of light penetration (Secchi disk transparency) were made at phytoplankton- pigment-sampling locations whenever light and river-surface conditions were appropriate. Each synoptic sampling event was completed in 2 days or less. The entire network was sampled 10 times from May 24 to October 27, 1993. Continuous-record monitoring of water quality consisted of hourly measurments of specific conductance, pH, water temperature, and dissolved oxygen concentration that were made at a depth of 6.6 feet at the ends of the upstream and downstream wingwalls at Willow Island Dam. Application of herbicides to corn and soybeans accounts for most of the use. The U.S. Geological Survey collected samples from four networks of monitoring wells in the White River Basin during 1994-95. The most frequently detected compounds in ground water were desethyl atrazine (a breakdown product of atrazine) and the commonly used herbicides, atrazine and metolachlor. Insecticides commonly used in urban and agricultural areas were not found. The highest concentration of any pesticide detected was alachlor at 0.19 micrograms per liter. Most detections of atrazine and desethyl atrazine were in agricultural areas overlying fluvial deposits, which are vulnerable to pesticide contamination, but the concentrations were small (less than 0.1 microgram per liter).
","language":"English","publisher":"U.S. Geological Survey","publisherLocation":"Reston, VA","doi":"10.3133/fs08496","usgsCitation":"Fenelon, J.M., and Moore, R.C., 1996, This type of information is critical in the design of bridges, culverts and water-control structures, establishment of flood-insurance rates and flood-plain regulation, and for other uses by urban planners and engineers.\r\n\r\nConcurrent records of rainfall and runoff data collected in small urban basins were used to calibrate rainfall-runoff models. Historic rain- fall records were used with the calibrated models to synthesize a long- term record of annual peak discharges. The synthesized record of annual peak discharges were used in a statistical analysis to determine flood- frequency distributions. These frequency distributions were used with distributions from previous investigations to develop a database for 32 small urban basins in the Blue Ridge-Piedmont, Sand Hills, and Coastal Plain hydrologic areas. The study basins ranged in size from 0.04 to 41.0 square miles. Data describing the size and shape of the basin, level of urban development, and climate and rural flood charac- teristics also were included in the database.\r\n\r\nEstimation equations were developed by relating flood-frequency char- acteristics to basin characteristics in a generalized least-squares regression analysis. The most significant basin characteristics are drainage area, impervious area, and rural flood discharge. The model error and prediction errors for the estimating equations were less than those for the national flood-frequency equations previously reported. Resulting equations, which have prediction errors generally less than 40 percent, can be used to estimate flood-peak discharges for 2-, 5-, 10-, 25-, 50-, and 100-year recurrence intervals for small Human activities in the basin have altered much of the landscape. The presence of coal mining, oil and gas exploration, agriculture, on-lot septic systems, and commercial development within the basin can introduce contaminants altering the natural chemistry of the ground water. Data collected to document current ground-water quality also can serve as a baseline for comparison of any future water-quality changes by continuing human activities. This report presents the results of a synoptic ground-water-quality sampling in the upper Mahoning Creek Basin. Present ground-water quality in the basin is characterized in relation to published standards, local land-use activities, and other areas with similar natural characteristics.
","language":"English","publisher":"U.S. Geological Survey","doi":"10.3133/fs17696","usgsCitation":"Langland, M.J., 1996, Quality of ground water at selected sites in the upper Mahoning Creek Basin, Pennsylvania: U.S. Geological Survey Fact Sheet 176-96, 4 p., https://doi.org/10.3133/fs17696.","productDescription":"4 p.","onlineOnly":"Y","additionalOnlineFiles":"N","costCenters":[{"id":532,"text":"Pennsylvania Water Science Center","active":true,"usgs":true}],"links":[{"id":34071,"rank":299,"type":{"id":11,"text":"Document"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/fs/1996/0176/fs19960176.pdf","text":"Report","size":"123 KB","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"},"description":"FS 1996-0176"},{"id":117128,"rank":0,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/fs/1996/0176/coverthb.jpg"}],"contact":"
Director, Pennsylvania Water Science Center
U.S. Geological Survey
215 Limekiln Road
New Cumberland, PA 17070
","noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e4a8fe4b07f02db65515a","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Langland, Michael J. 0000-0002-8350-8779 langland@usgs.gov","orcid":"https://orcid.org/0000-0002-8350-8779","contributorId":2347,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Langland","given":"Michael","email":"langland@usgs.gov","middleInitial":"J.","affiliations":[{"id":532,"text":"Pennsylvania Water Science Center","active":true,"usgs":true}],"preferred":true,"id":153092,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1}]}}

Using the water-quality data collected by the Trinity River Basin NAWQA study-unit team, an analysis of pesticides in urban and agricultural streams was made by aggregating and grouping data from several networks. The samples were collected during March 1993 through September 1995. About 70 samples were collected from urban streams and 70 from agricultural streams. The urban dataset consists of sampling sites in the Dallas-Fort Worth metropolitan area where more than 3.5 million people lived in 1990. Land use in the sampled urban watersheds is primarily residential, but there are commercial areas, such as shopping centers and office complexes along major highways and streets. The agricultural dataset consists of sampling sites in the watershed of Richland-Chambers Reservoir, an area in the west-central part of the Trinity River Basin where fertile soils are extensively cultivated. The land use is mostly cropland and pasture with some rangeland. In the cultivated areas, the major crops are corn, cotton, and sorghum. In the rangeland areas, cattle are the dominant livestock. In the pasture areas, hay is grown along with grass for cattle feed. None of the crops are irrigated.
\n
The material in this fact sheet is condensed from a report by Land and Brown (1996) where the study is presented in greater detail.
","language":"English","publisher":"U.S. Geological Survey","doi":"10.3133/fs17896","usgsCitation":"Land, L.F., 1996, Pesticides in urban and agricultural streams, 1993-95: U.S. Geological Survey Fact Sheet 178-96, 2 p., https://doi.org/10.3133/fs17896.","productDescription":"2 p.","onlineOnly":"N","additionalOnlineFiles":"N","costCenters":[{"id":583,"text":"Texas Water Science Center","active":true,"usgs":true}],"links":[{"id":125313,"rank":0,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/fs/1996/0178/report-thumb.jpg"},{"id":34069,"rank":300,"type":{"id":11,"text":"Document"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/fs/1996/0178/report.pdf","text":"Report","size":"1.0 MB","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"},"description":"Report"}],"country":"United States","state":"Texas","otherGeospatial":"Richland-Chambers Reservoir, Trinity River Basin","geographicExtents":"{\n  \"type\": \"FeatureCollection\",\n  \"features\": [\n    {\n      \"type\": \"Feature\",\n      \"properties\": {},\n      \"geometry\": {\n        \"type\": \"Polygon\",\n        \"coordinates\": [\n          [\n            [\n              -97.3,\n              31.5\n            ],\n            [\n              -97.3,\n              33.5\n            ],\n            [\n              -96,\n              33.5\n            ],\n            [\n              -96,\n              31.5\n            ],\n            [\n              -97.3,\n              31.5\n            ]\n          ]\n        ]\n      }\n    }\n  ]\n}","noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e4ae0e4b07f02db6881e1","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Land, Larry F.","contributorId":60612,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Land","given":"Larry","email":"","middleInitial":"F.","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":153089,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1}]}}

The function of the wetland as a retention system for suspended sediments and nutrients (total and dissolved phosphorus, total ammonia plus organic nitrogen, dissolved ammonia, and nitrite plus nitrate nitrogen) was studied from February 1993 through September 1995. Input and output load computations were based on water flow (discharge) measurements and periodic sampling of suspended sediments and nutrients at the three inflowing streams and at the wetland outflow. Results of the study indicated consistent sediment retention throughout the year; at times, as much as 80 percent of the inflow load was retained in the wetland. Nutrient retention was generally of lesser magnitude and much more variable. Although the annual budgets confirm net retention for all nutrient forms except ammonia, data analysis over shorter time scales show that outflow loads actually can exceed inflow loads during the late spring and summer months the period of greatest likelihood of algal blooms in the lake. This result demonstrates that the nutrient-trapping function of the wetland is variable because of the complexity of the system. Awareness of such variability can help to maintain realistic expectations and effective management practices.
","language":"English","publisher":"U.S. Geological Survey","doi":"10.3133/fs23296","usgsCitation":"Elder, J.F., and Goddard, G.L., 1996, Sediment and nutrient trapping efficiency of a constructed wetland near Delavan Lake, Wisconsin, 1993-1995: U.S. Geological Survey Fact Sheet 232-96, 4 p., https://doi.org/10.3133/fs23296.","productDescription":"4 p.","numberOfPages":"4","onlineOnly":"N","additionalOnlineFiles":"N","costCenters":[{"id":677,"text":"Wisconsin Water Science Center","active":true,"usgs":true}],"links":[{"id":31997,"rank":300,"type":{"id":11,"text":"Document"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/fs/1996/0232/report.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":273,"rank":100,"type":{"id":15,"text":"Index Page"},"url":"https://wi.water.usgs.gov/pubs/FS-232-96/","linkFileType":{"id":5,"text":"html"}},{"id":117800,"rank":0,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/fs/1996/0232/report-thumb.jpg"}],"country":"United States","state":"Wisconsin","otherGeospatial":"Delevan Lake, Jackson Creek Wetland","geographicExtents":"{\n  \"type\": \"FeatureCollection\",\n  \"features\": [\n    {\n      \"type\": \"Feature\",\n      \"properties\": {},\n      \"geometry\": {\n        \"type\": \"Polygon\",\n        \"coordinates\": [\n          [\n            [\n              -88.70052337646484,\n              42.595049077851826\n            ],\n            [\n              -88.604736328125,\n              42.53486817758702\n            ],\n            [\n              -88.5446548461914,\n              42.581399679665054\n            ],\n            [\n              -88.45539093017578,\n              42.63446388282484\n            ],\n            [\n              -88.3747100830078,\n              42.63522161536405\n            ],\n            [\n              -88.40217590332031,\n              42.706659563510385\n            ],\n            [\n              -88.5007095336914,\n              42.71473218539458\n            ],\n            [\n              -88.58207702636719,\n              42.69909052694581\n            ],\n            [\n              -88.70052337646484,\n              42.595049077851826\n            ]\n          ]\n        ]\n      }\n    }\n  ]\n}","noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e4a0be4b07f02db5fc0e0","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Elder, John F.","contributorId":23919,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Elder","given":"John","email":"","middleInitial":"F.","affiliations":[{"id":595,"text":"U.S. Geological Survey","active":false,"usgs":true}],"preferred":false,"id":150786,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1},{"text":"Goddard, Gerald L.","contributorId":35721,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Goddard","given":"Gerald","email":"","middleInitial":"L.","affiliations":[{"id":676,"text":"Wisconsin Water Resource Division","active":false,"usgs":true}],"preferred":false,"id":150787,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":2}]}}

The landscape of central Florida is riddled with lakes—when viewed from the air it almost seems there is more water than land. Florida has more naturally formed lakes than other southeastern States, where many lakes are manmade, created by building darns across streams. The abundance of lakes on the Florida peninsula is a result of the geology and geologic history of the State. An estimated 7,800 lakes in Florida are greater than 1 acre in surface area. Of these, 35 percent are located in just four counties (fig. 1): Lake, Orange, Osceola, and Polk (Hughes, 1974b). Lakes add to the aesthetic and commercial value of the area and are used by many residents and visitors for fishing, boating, swimming, and other types of outdoor recreation. Lakes also are used for other purposes, such as irrigation, flood control, water supply, and navigation.
","language":"English","publisher":"U.S. Geological Survey","doi":"10.3133/ofr96412","collaboration":"Prepared in cooperation with the St. Johns River Water Management District, South Florida Water Management District","usgsCitation":"Schiffer, D., and Medina, R., 1996, Hydrology of central Florida lakes, a primer: U.S. Geological Survey Open-File Report 96-412, vi, 37 p., https://doi.org/10.3133/ofr96412.","productDescription":"vi, 37 p.","costCenters":[],"links":[{"id":156453,"rank":0,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1996/0412/report-thumb.jpg"},{"id":399844,"rank":2,"type":{"id":11,"text":"Document"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1996/0412/report.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}}],"country":"United States","state":"Florida","otherGeospatial":"central Florida","geographicExtents":"{\n  \"type\": \"FeatureCollection\",\n  \"features\": [\n    {\n      \"type\": \"Feature\",\n      \"properties\": {},\n      \"geometry\": {\n        \"type\": \"Polygon\",\n        \"coordinates\": [\n          [\n            [\n              -82.81494140625,\n              27.21555620902969\n            ],\n            [\n              -80.44189453125,\n              27.21555620902969\n            ],\n            [\n              -80.44189453125,\n              29.516110386062277\n            ],\n            [\n              -82.81494140625,\n              29.516110386062277\n            ],\n            [\n              -82.81494140625,\n              27.21555620902969\n            ]\n          ]\n        ]\n      }\n    }\n  ]\n}","noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e4a13e4b07f02db601f41","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Schiffer, D.
