Field-study methods were of a reconnaissance nature, and thus the interpretations in the report are subject to revision as further information becomes available. This report can provide broad geologic guidelines for planners and engineers during preparation of land-use plans. The use of this information should lead to minimizing future loss of life and property due to geologic hazards, especially during very large earthquakes. \r\n\r\nLandscape of Sitka and surrounding area is characterized by numerous islands and a narrow strip of gently rolling ground adjacent to rugged mountains; steep valleys and some fiords cut sharply into the mountains. A few valley floors are wide and flat and grade into moderate-sized deltas. \r\n\r\nGlaciers throughout southeastern Alaska and elsewhere became vastly enlarged during the Pleistocene Epoch. The Sitka area presumably was covered by ice several times; glaciers deeply eroded some valleys and removed fractured bedrock along some faults. The last major deglaciation occurred sometime before 10,000 years ago. Crustal rebound believed to be related to glacial melting caused land emergence at Sitka of at least 35 feet (10.7 m) relative to present sea level. \r\n\r\nBedrock at Sitka and vicinity is composed mostly of bedded, hard, dense graywacke and some argillite. Beds strike predominantly northwest and are vertical or steeply dipping. Locally, bedded rocks are cut by dikes of fine-grained igneous rock. Host bedrock is of Jurassic and Cretaceous age. \r\n\r\nEight types of surficial deposits of Quaternary age were recognized. Below altitudes of 3S feet (10.7 m), the dominant deposits are those of modern and elevated shores and deltas; at higher altitudes, widespread muskeg overlies a mantle of volcanic ash which commonly overlies glacial drift. Alluvial deposits are minor. Man-emplaced embankment fill, chiefly sandy gravel, covers many muskeg and former offshore areas; quarried blocks of graywacke are placed to form breakwaters and to edge large areas of embankment fill and modified ground.\r\n\r\nThe geologic structure of the area is known only in general outlines. Most bedded Mesozoic rocks probably are part of broad northwest-trending complexes of anticlines and synclines. Intrusion of large bodies of plutonic igneous rocks occurred in Tertiary and Cretaceous time. Extensive faulting is suggested by the numerous linear to gently curving patterns of some fiords, lakes, and valleys, and by a group of Holocene volcanoes and cinder cones. Two major northwest-striking fault zones are most prominent: (1) the apparently inactive Chichagof-Sitka fault, about 2.5 miles (4.0 km) northeast of Sitka, and {2) part of the active 800-mile- (1,200-km) long Fairweather-Queen Charlotte Islands fault system, lying about 30 miles (48 km) southwest of the city. \r\n\r\nMany earthquakes have been reported as felt at Sitka since 1832, when good records were first maintained; several shocks were very strong, but none of them caused severe damage. The closest major earthquake (magnitude about 7.3) causing some damage to the city occurred July 30, 1972, and had an epicenter about 30 miles (48 km) to the southwest. Movement along the Fairweather-Queen Charlotte Islands fault system apparently caused most of the earthquakes felt at Sitka. \r\n\r\nThe probability of destructive earthquakes at Sitka is unknown. The tectonics of the region and the seismic record suggest that sometime in the future an earthquake of a magnitude of about 8 and related to the Fairweather-Queen Charlotte Islands fault system probably will occur in or near the area. \r\n\r\nEffects from some nearby major earthquakes could cause substantial damage at Sitka. This tabulation of ages has been made as a convenience to anyone desiring a quick reference to ages published in the United States from 1956 through 1964. This tabulation does not include all published K-Ar, Rb-Sr, or Pb-a ages, but is probably 98 percent complete. Many of the radiometric ages published in abstracts, footnotes, or personal communications are not included as sample localities are lacking or are not sufficiently detailed to be of value. Such ages are often published in a subsequent article with detailed sample locations and geologic interpretation. There may be some duplication of ages in this tabulation. The references listed are either the original source for an age or the best source in regard to sample location, decay constants, interpretation, etc. For a tabulation of Pb-a ages published prior to 1957, see U. S. Geological Survey Bulletin 1097-B, Lead-alpha age determinations of accessory minerals of igneous rocks (1953-1957) by H. W. Jaffe, David Gottfried, C. L. Waring, and H. W. Worthing (1959). A minor number of unpublished radiometric ages from Ph.D. or M.S. theses are also listed in this tabulation.

The tabulated ages are systematized according to year and state. All ages published during a specific year (i.e. 1956) are grouped together, with the ages listed under the name of the state in which the sample was collected. The states are alphabetized. The dated sample is described as to rock type, location, material analyzed, age(s) determined, radiometric method used, and published reference (by first author only). The complete reference is listed at the end of the tabulation for each specific year. To answer questions about geologic interpretation, decay constants, or location, one must review the source reference.

The ERTS Data Collection System makes it feasible for the first time to monitor the level of activity at widely separated volcanoes and to relay these data rapidly to one central office for analysis. This capability opens a new era in volcanology where the hundreds of normally quiescent but potentially dangerous volcanoes near populated regions around the world can be economically and reliably monitored daily to warn when any one volcano is becoming active again. Before ERTS was launched only a few volcanoes in the world were monitored continuously because of the high cost of building and staffing volcano observatories. Yet it is known from data collected in this century, that while visible signs of pending eruptions may occur only minutes to days in advance, invisible but measurable signs may be detected days, weeks, months and even years before a major eruption. While prediction of specific eruptions is still an elusive goal, early warning of a reawakening of activity at quiescent volcanoes is now a distinct possibility.

A prototype volcano surveillance system was established during the latter part of 1972 and early 1973 on 15 volcanoes in Alaska, Hawaii, Washington, California, Iceland, Guatemala, El Salvador, and Nicaragua. Nineteen seismic detectors that count four different sizes of earthquakes and six biaxial borehole tiltmeters that measure ground tilt with a resolution of 1 microradian have been installed. Data from these instruments are relayed through the ERTS satellite and through a teletype link to the U.S. Geological Survey Office in Menlo Park for rapid analysis. Only seismic and tilt data are collected because these have been shown in the past to indicate most reliably the level of volcanic activity and also because they can be measured relatively easily with available instrumentation. Experience during this project demonstrates the feasibility of building inexpensive, low power, reliable instruments that can be installed in remote locations and can be expected to run unattended for a few years.

Comparison of the data from these new earthquake counters with data from nearby standard seismometers shows that the counters do normally indicate the level of seismic activity. During periods of high seismic background noise there may be a significant number of spurious counts but the existence and duration of such noisy periods are reliably indicated by other data collected by the earthquake counters. An eruption of Volcan Fuego in Guatemala was preceded by an order of magnitude increase in the number of seismic-event counts several days before.

The tiltmeters operated stably in several different environments. A twenty-microradian collapse of the summit of Kilauea Volcano in Hawaii was observed on three tiltmeters.

This initial experiment shows that now with the advent of inexpensive satellite telemetry it is both technologically and economically feasible to build a global volcano surveillance system. Several details in the design and deployment of appropriate low-power, inexpensive, and reliable instruments still need to be worked out. Work continues to evaluate the scientific feasibility of this system by collecting and analyzing data that clearly demonstrate the ability of this system to detect changes in volcanic activity.

The National Center for Earthquake Research of the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) installed a network of eleven seismograph stations in south-central Alaska in the summer of 1971 to collect seismological data for investigating seismic and tectonic processes in the Cook Inlet region, for evaluating the seismic hazard in the Cook Inlet region and in the Chugach Mountains along the southern end of the route of the proposed trans-Alaska oil pipeline, and for studying the structure of the crust and upper mantle in south-central Alaska. The first recordings from the network were obtained in late September 1971. The first earthquakes to be located with data from the network occurred in October 1971.

This earthquake catalog, which is the first to be compiled for the USGS Alaska network, presents origin times, focal coordinates and magnitudes for 210 shocks occurring in the second quarter of 1972 (except from June 15 to 23) in south-central Alaska, primarily in the Cook Inlet region. Readings from a total of 18 stations were used to locate the shocks. To supplement the readings from the 10 USGS stations that were operative during this quarter, arrival times were obtained from 6 stations operated by the Palmer Seismological Observatory of the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) and 2 stations operated by the Geophysical Institute of the University of Alaska (U of A).

The data in this catalog are the most detailed and precise earthquake data compiled to date for earthquakes within the Cook Inlet region. Earthquakes in south-central Alaska as small as magnitude 3.0 have been routinely located by the National Earthquake Information Center of NOAA (currently the National Earthquake Information Service of USGS) since the great Alaska earthquake of 1964 and published in the reports \"Preliminary Determination of Epicenters\" (PDE). In contrast the shocks included in this catalog are as small as magnitude 1.0 and most are smaller than magnitude 3.0. Data for the larger historic earthquakes in south-central Alaska have been tabulated by Davis and Echols (1962) and U.S. Coast and Geodetic Survey (1966).

The locations of the eleven stations of the NCER seismograph network are plotted in Figure 1 and listed in Table 1 along with the additional stations from which readings were obtained. The USGS stations have single, vertical-component seismometers except for NKA and SKL, which also have two horizontal seismometers. The station ERN was installed in the summer of 1971, however the telemetry circuit was not available until September 1972.

Many of the radiometric ages published in abstracts, footnotes, or personal communications are not included as sample localities are lacking or are not sufficiently detailed to be of value. Such ages are often published in a subsequent article with detailed sample locations and geologic interpretation. There may be some duplication of ages in this tabulation. The references listed are either the original source for an age or the best source in regard to sample location, decay constants, interpretation, etc. A few fission-track ages also are listed.

winter of 1973-74. The portion considered in this report is the area from the Yukon River south to Isabel Pass in the Alaska Range. \r\n\r\nThe occurrences of aufeis gave the appearance of four rather distinct modes of formation. In the area south of Big Delta, the icings occurred as seepage at the toes of the terraces and along the bottoms of the stream channels cutting into the terraces. In the Yukon-Tanana uplands, the icings occurred generally as seepage at the lowest points in the U-shaped valleys and along the surfaces of the streams in the tributary valleys incised into the rolling hills. Water-quality and geohydrologic data were collected at two sanitary landfill (solid-waste disposal) sites near Anchorage, Alaska. The purpose of the study was to evaluate the environmental effects of solid-waste disposal on the ground-water system and establish criteria for selecting future landfill sites. This report is a compilation of the data collected through August 1973.

The Eagle River — Chugiak area is a rapidly growing residential part of the Greater Anchorage Area Borough, south-central Alaska. High-density, urban development in some parts of the area may be restricted because of the nature of the surficial geologic materials and their hydrologic characteristics. This report assembles all information collected by the U.S. Geological Survey on the geology and ground-water resources of the Eagle River — Chugiak area.

The study area lies mostly within the Cook Inlet — Susitna Lowland and consists of low hills and intervening channels, hummocky ridges, sloping alluvial fans, and low-lying tidal flats that border Knik Arm. The eastern part of the area lies on the steep slopes of the Chugach Mountains. Drainage is generally to the west and northwest, except that locally the slopes drain southwesterly to the Eagle River, the major stream of the area.
