Data were normalized for extant concentrations of aluminum to isolate natural factors from anthropogenic ones. The normalization was based on the hypothesis that metal concentrations vary consistently with the concentration of aluminum, unless metals are of anthropogenic origin. Strong linear correlations (&gt;75% variation explained) were observed between Al and Cr, Cu, Pb, Ni, and Zn. Moderate correlations (50–75% variation explained) were observed between Al and As or Ag. Weak but significant correlations (30–40% variation explained) were observed between Al and Hg or Cd. Based on these results, the spatial extent of contamination was examined. About 39% of sites with contamination by at least one metal occurred near population centers, industrial discharge sites, or military bases. The remainder of the observed contamination represented a dispersed pattern, including the lower Mississippi River (7%) and numerous agricultural watersheds (54%), suggesting that the contamination might be from nonpoint sources.</span></p>","language":"English","publisher":"Springer","doi":"10.2307/1352519","usgsCitation":"Summers, J., Wade, T.L., Engle, V.D., and Malaeb, Z.A., 1996, Transverse dispersion, however, can make it difficult to determine the location of the groundwater advective front directly from concentration measurements. A three-stage iterative procedure is developed to estimate groundwater flow and transport parameters from head and concentration data, and is tested using an analytical model. The results are compared to those obtained when advective and dispersive transport parameters are estimated simultaneously. The iterative procedure can be effective at estimating advective and dispersive parameters that improve the fit to the concentration data, but the simultaneous procedure generally produces a better, optimal fit to the concentration data and, therefore, estimates more accurate and precise parameters values. This is accomplished in fewer iterations. It had been anticipated that this iterative procedure might be effective and efficient for using concentration data to estimate parameters of numerical models, but these preliminary results suggest that its utility is limited.&nbsp;</p>","largerWorkType":{"id":4,"text":"Book"},"largerWorkTitle":"Calibration and Reliability in Groundwater Modelling: Proceedings of the ModelCARE'96 Conference","largerWorkSubtype":{"id":12,"text":"Conference publication"},"conferenceTitle":"ModelCARE'96 Conference ","conferenceDate":"September 24-26","conferenceLocation":"Golden Colorado","language":"English","publisher":"IAHS","usgsCitation":"Anderman, E.R., Poeter, E.P., and Hill, M.C., 1996, Presentation and evaluation of a new multi-stage parameter estimation method using advective transport observations, chap. <i>of</i> Calibration and Reliability in Groundwater Modelling: Proceedings of the ModelCARE'96 Conference, p. 179-188.","productDescription":"9 p. Using larger sample sizes than the usual 1–3 density estimates per species, we estimated a regression slope of −0.71 for terrestrial mammalian carnivores. We investigated the sampling variation in this estimate, and those derived from smaller intra-specific subsets, using 1000-iteration bootstrap analyses to obtain 90% confidence intervals. As expected, these widened as random subsets were reduced in size, but always contained the postulated −0.75. However, log</span><sub>10</sub><span>&nbsp;density also declined as 3/4 of the log</span><sub>10</sub><span>&nbsp;spatial extent of study area, and study area accounted for virtually all of the variation in density that was previously thought due to body mass. We removed the effect of study area by using the species-specific regression models between density and study area to predict density at a common scale of 400 km</span><sup>2</sup><span>. These common-scale densities regressed against body mass with a slope of −0.16, but separated into body mass classes less than and greater than 11 kg, they produced slopes that were not significantly different from zero. We show that the allometry of density could be a case of circular logic, whereby body mass has influenced the investigator's choice of study area, and the resulting scale-dependent densities are related back to body mass. To test the allometry hypothesis, the effect of study area on density estimates needs to be removed. This requires conducting larger-scale studies of the smaller-bodied species so that all species compared are represented by an average study area that is near the common scale. Furthermore, study sites need to be selected and designed to represent more than the local detail in species' density.</span></p>","language":"English","publisher":"Springer Nature","doi":"10.1007/BF00333952","usgsCitation":"Smallwood, K.S., Jones, G., and Schonewald, C., 1996, Spatial scaling of allometry among terrestrial, mammalian carnivores: Oecologia, v. 107, no. 4, p. 588-594, https://doi.org/10.1007/BF00333952.","productDescription":"7 p.","startPage":"588","endPage":"594","costCenters":[{"id":651,"text":"Western Ecological Research Center","active":true,"usgs":true}],"links":[{"id":130950,"rank":1,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/thumbnails/outside_thumb.jpg"}],"volume":"107","issue":"4","noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e49e5e4b07f02db5e6cc5","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Smallwood, K. Soil development indices, based on field descriptions and laboratory analysis, provide a basis for comparison of these soils to each other and to dated soil chronosequences at Cajon Pass, Merced, and Anza, California. The soils in this study record a complex tectonic and climatic history, include preserved surfaces intermediate in soil development to those at Cajon Pass, and do not preserve a record of the major late Pleistocene to early Holocene aggradational event observed elsewhere in the region. Pedogenesis is similar to that of regional soils in southern California. With time, the profiles develop progressively thicker argillic horizons, and they increase in redness, clay, and secondary iron oxide content, and amount and thickness of clay films. With increasing soil age the ratio of dithionite-extractable Fe to total Fe increases, while the ratios of Fe</span><span class=\"sup\">2+</span><span>to Fe</span><span class=\"sup\">3+</span><span>and of oxalate- to dithionite-extractable Fe decrease. These trends are more subdued in the STB than elsewhere in the region, perhaps because the slightly higher temperature and lower precipitation of the STB may slow the rate of transformation of ferrihydrite to hematite. We use weighted means of soil development indices and rubification index values to compare the soils of this study to those at Cajon Pass, Merced, and Anza. Wide-range age estimates using the maximum limits of these values result in 27,500–305,000 yr for surface Q1, 43,000–570,000 yr for surface Q2, and 300,000–700,000 yr for surfaces Q3 and Q4. Weighing most heavily the nearest dated chronosequences, Anza and Cajon Pass, yields best estimates of age. The majority of \r\nthis 84-square-mile watershed is within national forest lands \r\nmanaged by the U.S. Forest Service. In 1985, the Forest Service \r\nplanned to conduct timber harvesting in the headwaters of \r\nGallinas Creek. The City of Las Vegas was concerned about possible \r\neffects from logging on water quality and on water-supply \r\ntreatment costs. The U.S. Geological Survey began a cooperative \r\nstudy in 1987 to (1) assess the baseline water-quality \r\ncharacteristics of Gallinas Creek upstream from the Las Vegas \r\nwater-supply diversion, (2) relate water quality to State water-\r\nquality standards, and (3) determine possible causes for spatial \r\ndifferences in quality. During 1987-90, water-quality \r\nconstituents and aquatic benthic macroinvertebrates were \r\ncollected and analyzed at five sampling sites in the watershed. \r\n\r\n     Specific conductance, pH, total hardness, total alkalinity, \r\nand calcium concentrations increased in a downstream direction, \r\nprobably in response to differences in geology in the watershed. \r\nThe water-quality standard for temperature was exceeded at the \r\ntwo most downstream sites probably due to a lack of riparian \r\nvegetation and low streamflow conditions. The standards for pH \r\nand turbidity were exceeded at all sites except the most upstream \r\none.  Concentrations of nitrogen species and phosphorus generally \r\nwere small at all sites. The maximum total nitrogen concentration \r\nof 2.1 milligrams per liter was at the mouth of Porvenir Canyon; \r\nonly one sample at this site exceeded the water-quality standard \r\nfor total inorganic nitrogen. At each of the sites, 10 to 15 \r\npercent of the samples exceeded the total phosphorus standard of \r\nless than 0.1 milligram per liter. Except for aluminum and iron, \r\nalmost all samples tested for trace elements contained \r\nconcentrations less than the laboratory detection limit. No \r\ntrace-element concentrations exceeded the State standard for \r\ndomestic water supplies. Suspended-sediment concentrations \r\nappeared to increase with distance downstream; suspended sediment \r\nincreased significantly from the uppermost site to the second \r\nsite near the national forest boundary, most probably caused by \r\nrunoff from the unpaved forest road adjacent to Gallinas Creek. \r\nThe aquatic macroinvertebrate assessment indicated that the three \r\nupstream sites had good biological conditions and were \r\nnonimpaired, whereas the two downstream sites had lowered \r\nbiological conditions and were slightly impaired. The water-\r\nquality and biological assessments provided similar results.","language":"ENGLISH","publisher":"U.S. Geological Survey ;\r\nEarth Science Information Center, Open-File Reports Section [distributor],","doi":"10.3133/wri964011","usgsCitation":"Garn, H., and Jacobi, G., 1996, Water quality and benthic macroinvertebrate bioassessment of Gallinas Creek, San Miguel County, New Mexico, 1987-90: U.S. Geological Survey Water-Resources Investigations Report 96-4011, v, 57 p. :ill., map ;28 cm., https://doi.org/10.3133/wri964011.","productDescription":"v, 57 p. :ill., map ;28 cm.","costCenters":[],"links":[{"id":158750,"rank":0,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/wri/1996/4011/report-thumb.jpg"},{"id":56109,"rank":300,"type":{"id":11,"text":"Document"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/wri/1996/4011/report.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}}],"noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e4a08e4b07f02db5f9c05","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Garn, H.S.","contributorId":42601,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Garn","given":"H.S.","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":197791,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1},{"text":"Jacobi, G.Z.","contributorId":81950,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Jacobi","given":"G.Z.","email":"","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":197792,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":2}]}}

However, actual rates of suspended sediment removal have rarely been measured in freshwater wetland systems. To address this issue, suspended sediment dynamics were measured in a 85-km</span><sup>2</sup><span>&nbsp;bottomland hardwood (BLH) wetland adjacent to the highly turbid Cache River in eastern Arkansas during the 1988–1990 water years. A suspended sediment mass balance was calculated using depth-integrated, flow-weighted daily measurements at wetland inflow and outflow points. Over the three-year period, suspended sediment load decreased an average of 14% between upstream and downstream sampling points. To test the idea that the suspended sediments were retained by the adjacent wetland and to determine what portion of the BLH forest was most responsible for retaining the suspended sediments, concurrent measurements of sediment accretion were made at 30 sites in the wetland using feldspar clay marker horizons, sedimentation disks, the</span><sup>137</sup><span>cesium method, and dendrogeomorphic techniques. Sedimentation rates exceeding 1 cm/yr were measured in frequently flooded areas dominated by </span><i>Nyssa aquatica</i><span>&nbsp;and </span><i>Taxodium distichum</i><span>. Maximum sedimentation rates did not occur on the natural levee, as would be predicted by classical fluvial geomorphology, but in the “first bottom,” where retention time of the water reached a maximum. Multiple regression was used to relate sedimentation rates with several physical and biological factors. A combination of distance from the river, flood duration, and tree basal area accounted for nearly 90% of the variation in sedimentation rates.</span></span></p>","language":"English","publisher":"Springer Nature","doi":"10.1007/BF03161323","issn":"02775212","usgsCitation":"Kleiss, B., 1996, Sediment retention in a bottomland hardwood wetland in eastern Arkansas: Wetlands, v. 16, no. 3, p. 321-333, https://doi.org/10.1007/BF03161323.","productDescription":"13 p.","startPage":"321","endPage":"333","costCenters":[],"links":[{"id":503770,"rank":2,"type":{"id":41,"text":"Open Access External Repository Page"},"url":"https://digitalcommons.lsu.edu/gradschool_disstheses/6025","text":"External Repository"},{"id":226719,"rank":1,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/thumbnails/outside_thumb.jpg"}],"country":"United States","state":"Arkansas","otherGeospatial":"eastern Arkansas","geographicExtents":"{\n  \"type\": \"FeatureCollection\",\n  \"features\": [\n    {\n      \"type\": \"Feature\",\n      \"properties\": {},\n      \"geometry\": {\n        \"coordinates\": [\n          [\n            [\n              -91.21480606880425,\n              36.05701646084884\n            ],\n            [\n              -91.6592849714275,\n              34.425186910956285\n            ],\n            [\n              -91.5122639998533,\n              32.53441399953529\n            ],\n            [\n              -90.84299278500842,\n              32.331053891219526\n            ],\n            [\n              -90.86333874610101,\n              33.56914964201549\n            ],\n            [\n              -89.5141845795728,\n              36.16899487873114\n            ],\n            [\n              -89.77878071589814,\n              36.5449158948269\n            ],\n            [\n              -91.21480606880425,\n              36.05701646084884\n            ]\n          ]\n        ],\n        \"type\": \"Polygon\"\n      }\n    }\n  ]\n}","volume":"16","issue":"3","noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"505b89bce4b08c986b316e7f","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Kleiss, B.A.","contributorId":107320,"corporation":false,"usgs":false,"family":"Kleiss","given":"B.A.","email":"","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":381315,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1}]}}

In 1990, the estimated population of the study unit was 9.3 million, and included all or part of the cities of Atlanta, Jacksonville, Orlando, Tampa, and St. Petersburg. Estimated freshwater withdrawn in the study unit in 1990 was nearly 5,075 million gallons per day. Ground-water accounted for more than 57 percent of the water withdrawn during 1990 and the Floridan aquifer system provided nearly 91 percent of the total ground-water withdrawn. Surface-water accounted for nearly 43 percent of the water withdrawn in the study unit in 1990 with large amounts of withdrawals from the Altamaha River, Hillsborough River, the Ocmulgee River, the Oconee River, the St. Johns River, and the Suwannee River. Water withdrawn for public supply in the Georgia-Florida Coastal Plain study unit in 1990 totaled 1,139 million gallons per day, of which 83 percent was ground water and 17 percent was surface water. Self-supplied domestic withdrawals in the Georgia-Florida Coastal Plain study unit in 1990 totaled nearly 230 million gallons per day. Ground water supplied over 80 percent of the study units population for drining water purposes; nearly 5.8 million people were served by public supply and 1.8 million people were served by self-supplied systems. Water withdrawn for self-supplied domestic use in Georgia and Florida is derived almost exclusively from ground water, primarily because this source can provide the quantity and quality of water needed for drinking purposes. Nearly 1.7 million people served by public supply utilized surface water for their drinking water needs. Water withdrawn for self-supplied commercial-industrial uses in the study unit in 1990 totaled 862 million gallons per day, of which 93 percent was ground water and 7 percent was surface water. Water withdrawn for agriculture purposes in the study unit in 1990 totaled 1,293 million gallons per day, of which 69 percent was ground water and 31 percent was surface water. An estimated 1.254 millon acres were irrigated within the study unit during 1990. Water withdrawn for thermoelectric power generation in the study unit in 1990 totaled 1,552 million gallons per day, of which 99 percent was surface water and 1 percent was ground water. An additional 6,919 million gallons per day of saline surface water were withdrawn for thermoelectric power generation in 1990, solely for cooling purposes. Treated wastewater discharged within the Georgia-Florida Coastal Plain study unit totaled nearly 1,187 million gallons per day in 1990. Of the total water discharged, 58 percent was discharged directly into surface water and the remaining 42 percent was discharged to ground water (through drain fields, injection wells, percolation ponds or spray fields). Domestic wastewater facilities discharged in the study unit totaled nearly 789 million gallons per day, industrial wastewater facilities discharged 213 million gallons per day, and releases from septic tanks was estimated at 185 million gallons per day. More than 1.3 million septic tanks were estimated in use within the study unit in 1990.","language":"English","publisher":"U.S. Geological Survey","doi":"10.3133/wri954084","usgsCitation":"Marella, R., and Fanning, J.L., 1996, National water quality assessment of the Georgia-Florida Coastal Plain study unit — Water withdrawals and treated wastewater discharges, 1990: U.S. Geological Survey Water-Resources Investigations Report 95-4084, viii, 76 p., https://doi.org/10.3133/wri954084.","productDescription":"viii, 76 p.","costCenters":[{"id":13634,"text":"South Atlantic Water Science Center","active":true,"usgs":true}],"links":[{"id":394623,"rank":3,"type":{"id":36,"text":"NGMDB Index Page"},"url":"https://ngmdb.usgs.gov/Prodesc/proddesc_48193.htm"},{"id":124553,"rank":0,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/wri/1995/4084/report-thumb.jpg"},{"id":57395,"rank":300,"type":{"id":11,"text":"Document"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/wri/1995/4084/report.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}}],"country":"United States","state":"Florida, Georgia","otherGeospatial":"Georgia-Florida Coastal Plain","geographicExtents":"{\"type\":\"FeatureCollection\",\"features\":[{\"type\":\"Feature\",\"properties\":{},\"geometry\":{\"type\":\"Polygon\",\"coordinates\":[[[-84.7210693359375,30.704058230919504],[-84.90234375,30.543338954230222],[-85.0177001953125,30.24957724046765],[-84.803466796875,30.164126343161097],[-84.627685546875,29.935895213372444],[-84.57275390625,29.859701442126756],[-84.44091796875,29.859701442126756],[-84.29809570312499,29.859701442126756],[-84.2926025390625,30.012030680358613],[-84.17724609375,30.035811042667792],[-83.990478515625,30.050076521698735],[-83.7322998046875,29.893043385434165],[-83.6224365234375,29.76914573606667],[-83.51806640624999,29.602118211647333],[-83.397216796875,29.415675471217877],[-83.2489013671875,29.377388403478992],[-83.1610107421875,29.233683670282787],[-83.0841064453125,29.1281717828162],[-82.8753662109375,29.10897615145302],[-82.77099609375,28.945668833650508],[-82.75451660156249,28.815799886487298],[-82.694091796875,28.671310915880834],[-82.694091796875,28.492833128965096],[-82.8094482421875,28.265682390146477],[-82.891845703125,28.164032516628076],[-82.869873046875,27.955591004642553],[-82.8973388671875,27.790491224830877],[-82.7874755859375,27.68352808378776],[-82.75451660156249,27.552111841284695],[-80.299072265625,27.571590861376308],[-80.2935791015625,27.649472352561876],[-80.37597656249999,27.848790459862073],[-80.52429199218749,28.105903469076186],[-80.540771484375,28.20760859532738],[-80.540771484375,28.318888915773826],[-80.5133056640625,28.386567819657213],[-80.46936035156249,28.44454394857482],[-80.518798828125,28.647210004919998],[-80.6341552734375,28.815799886487298],[-80.771484375,29.065772888415406],[-81.0406494140625,29.439597566602902],[-81.1614990234375,29.807284450222504],[-81.27685546875,30.107117887092357],[-81.3592529296875,30.5764500266181],[-81.34277343749999,30.873940237887624],[-81.32080078125,31.052933985705163],[-81.23291015625,31.22689446881399],[-81.19445800781249,31.358327833411312],[-81.14501953125,31.48020882071693],[-81.03515625,31.648705289976853],[-80.958251953125,31.835565983656227],[-80.85937499999999,31.94750122367064],[-80.782470703125,32.00341778396365],[-80.8978271484375,32.0732655510424],[-81.046142578125,32.115148622612445],[-81.1175537109375,32.16166284018013],[-81.112060546875,32.2546200600072],[-81.0955810546875,32.30570601389429],[-81.177978515625,32.43097672054704],[-81.1669921875,32.47732919639942],[-81.24938964843749,32.537551746769],[-81.34277343749999,32.59773394005744],[-81.4031982421875,32.648625783736726],[-81.39770507812499,32.76880048488168],[-81.4031982421875,32.86574639547474],[-81.441650390625,32.95797741405952],[-81.4801025390625,33.04550781490999],[-81.5899658203125,33.1329513125159],[-81.73278808593749,33.15594830078649],[-81.88110351562499,33.330528249028085],[-82.06787109374999,33.41310221370827],[-82.28759765625,33.348884792201694],[-82.5732421875,33.22949814144951],[-83.056640625,33.25706340236547],[-83.33129882812499,33.0178760185549],[-83.507080078125,32.80574473290688],[-83.82568359375,32.722598604044066],[-83.66638183593749,32.263910555201306],[-83.7652587890625,32.05464469054932],[-83.8421630859375,31.76086695137955],[-84.19921875,31.353636941500987],[-84.6826171875,30.869225348040825],[-84.7210693359375,30.704058230919504]]]}}]}","noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e4b00e4b07f02db6980b6","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Marella, R. The data presented in this report were collected from 18 piezometers, 3 extensometers, 1 barometer, and 1 rain gage from January 1991 through September 1993. The piezometers and extensometers are at eight sites in the study area. This report discusses the ground-water-level and aquifer-system compaction monitoring networks, and presents the recorded data in graphs. Seismicity continues to the present day throughout a tightly clustered pattern of epicenters centered on the bootheel of Missouri, including parts of northeastern Arkansas, northwestern Tennessee, western Kentucky, and southern Illinois. In 1990, the New Madrid seismic zone/Central United States became the first seismically active region east of the Rocky Mountains to be designated a priority research area within the Natural Earthquake Hazards Reduction Program (NEHRP). This Professional Paper is a collection of papers, some published separately, presenting results of the newly intensified research program in this area. Major components of this research program include tectonic framework studies, seismicity and deformation monitoring and modeling, improved seismic hazard and risk assessments, and cooperative hazard mitigation studies.","language":"ENGLISH","doi":"10.3133/pp1538K","usgsCitation":"Rodriguez, B.D., Stanley, W.D., and Williams, J.M., 1996, Axial structures within the Reelfoot Rift delineated with magnetotelluric surveys: U.S. Geological Survey Professional Paper 1538, p. A total of 181 forms were returned and 112 agencies indicated that they use streamflow data. The responses show that streamflow data from the Iowa USGS stream-gaging network, which in 1996 is composed of 117 stations, are used by many agencies for many purposes and that many stations provide streamflow data that fulfill a variety of joint purposes. The median number of respondents per station that use data from the station was 6 and the median number of data-use categories indicated per station was 9. The survey results can be used by agencies that fund the Iowa USGS stream-gaging network to help them decide which stations to continue to support if it becomes necessary to reduce the size of the
