This capability opens a new era in volcanology where the hundreds of normally quiescent but potentially dangerous volcanoes near populated regions around the world can be economically and reliably monitored. A prototype global volcano surveillance system has been established beginning in the fall of 1972 with the help of local scientists on 15 volcanoes in Alaska, Hawaii, Washington, California, Iceland. Guatemala, El Salvador, and Nicaragua. Data on earthquake activity and ground tilt are received 6 to 10 times daily in Menlo Park, California, within 90 minutes of transmission from the sites. Seismic event counters were installed at 19 locations with biaxial borehole tiltineters with 1 microradian sensitivity installed at seven sites. Direct comparison of seismic events that are counted with records from nearby seismic stations show the event counters work quite reliably. An order of magnitude increase in seismic events was observed prior to the eruption of Volcán Fuego in Guatemala in February, 1973. Significant changes in tilt were observed on volcanoes Kilauea. Fuego, and Pacava. The pluton is composed of intercalated dunite, clinopyroxenite, and banded chromite layers. The chromite layers appear to dip toward the center of the mass, but they have been deformed, and in some places display isoclinal overturned folds. The garnet-clinopyroxenite bodies are compositionally layered and appear to have been deformed along with the host peridotite.</p><p>The garnet-clinopyroxenite bodies have whole-rock compositions analogous to alkali-poor anorthite gabbro or mafic anorthosite. Garnet compositions are dominated by the pyrope, grossularite, and almandine components, and the clinopyroxene bodies are rich in Ca-Tschermaks molecule (CaAl<sub>2</sub>SiO<sub>6</sub>).</p><p>Although crystallization from the liquidus is a possibility, textures, structures, and the chemical composition of the constituent mineral phases indicate that the garnet-clinopyroxenite has equilibrated in the solid state at pressures of 15 to 25 kb and temperatures of 1100°C to 1300°C. Packer seats were poor in part of the hole because of unstable wall conditions. Thus, some zones had to be tested several times. </p><p>The static water levels in the intervals tested ranged from 14.2 meters (46.6 feet) below land surface in the upper interval to 33.7 meters (110.6 feet) below land surface in one of the intervals near a depth of 1,500 meters (4,900 feet). </p><p>The specific capacity of the open hole from 83.5 to 1,980.6 meters (274 to 6,498 feet) was 3.26 cubic meters per day per meter (0.182 gallon per minute per foot) of drawdown after the hole had been jetted at an average rate of 763 cubic meters per day (140 gallons per minute) for about 41 hours. The Arctic Ocean is the focus of present-day spreading and probably was the focus of earlier stages of spreading in which spread of the Canada basin would have been an initial stage. These new data and their interpretations indicate that the type section of the Nuka Formation is inadequate. Although the gross pattern of worldwide seismicity contributed to the formulation of the plate tectonic hypothesis, it is the space-time characteristics of this seismicity that may contribute more toward understanding the kinematics and dynamics of the driving mechanism long speculated to originate in the mantle. If the lithosphere is composed of plates that move essentially as rigid bodies, then there should be seismic edge effects associated with this movement. It is these interplate effects, especially seismic migration patterns, that we discuss here. The unidirectional propagation at constant velocity (80 km yr<sup>−1</sup><span>&nbsp;</span>east to west) for earthquakes (<i>M</i>≥7.2) on the Antblian fault for the period 1939 to 1956 (ref. 2) is one of the earliest observations of such a phenomenon. Similar studies<sup>3,4</sup><span>&nbsp;</span>of the Alaska Aleutian seismic zone and certain regions of the west coast of South America suggest unidirectional and recurring migrations of earthquakes (<i>M</i>≥7.7) occur in these areas. Between these two regions along the great transform faults of the west coast of North America, there is some evidence<sup>5</sup><span>&nbsp;</span>for unidirectional, constant velocity and recurrent migration of great earthquakes. The small population of earthquakes (M&gt;7.2) in Savage's investigation<sup>5</sup><span>&nbsp;</span>indicates a large spatial gap along the San Andreas system in central California from 1830 to 1970. Previous work on the seismicity of this gap in central California indicates that the recurrence curves remain relatively constant, independent of large earthquakes, for periods up to a century<sup>6</sup>. Recurrence intervals for earthquakes along the San Andreas Fault have been calculated empirically by Wallace<sup>7</sup><span>&nbsp;</span>on the basis of geological evidence, surface measurements and assumptions restricted to the surficial seismic layer. The Einahnuhtan transgression is thought to represent Termination III, which according to Broecker and van Donk, took place about 225,000 y.a. The Kotzebuan transgression is thought to represent a positive fluctuation that modulated the generally falling sea level during the ensuing 100,000 yr. Sea level probably fell to about −135 m in the Bering Sea area during the maximum phase of the penultimate glaciation. The two Pelukian shorelines probably represent Termination II (about 125,000 yr BP in the Broecker-van Donk chronology) and one of the two positive fluctuations that modulated the generally falling sea level of early Wisconsinan time, about 105,000 and 80,000 y.a. according to Broecker and van Donk. Another positive modulation brought sea level to at least −20 m, about 30,000 y.a. Sea level evidently fell to between −90 and −100 m during the late Wisconsinan regression, but a substantial part of the outer Bering shelf remained submerged. A previous report (Carter and Adkison, 1972) presented preliminary electrical-log correlations of Tertiary rocks along two intersecting cross sections in the basin, and one of the cross sections included the Deep Creek well.</p><p>The work was done under a cooperative agreement between the U.S. Geological Survey and the Division of Geological and Geophysical Surveys, Department of Natural Resources,' State of Alaska. The writers gratefully acknowledge the assistance of W.'C. Fackler, State Geologist and T. R. Marshall, Jr., Chief Petroleum Geologist, Division of Oil and Gas. As most preliminary reports are of immediate, although temporary, value, it is desirable that references to them be compiled and made available for general use through the medium of open-file release.
