Speculated counterclockwise rotation of the Alaska-Chukchi continental edge best rationalizes the complex geology of northern Alaska, whereas a single continental block before the Jurassic makes the best palinspastic fit for Arctic America. The Arctic Ocean is the focus of present-day spreading and probably was the focus of earlier stages of spreading in which spread of the Canada basin would be an initial stage. If the Atlantic formed by seafloor spreading, spread of the Canada basin is probable because analogies between the Arctic and Atlantic edges indicate a common origin for the ocean basins. Late Cretaceous and younger deflections of the Cordillera in the Arctic and diabasic emplacements in the northern Arctic Islands may reflect later stages of spreading. The sea was bounded on the west by a narrow, unstable, and constantly rising cordillera which extended from Central America to Alaska and which separated the sea from Pacific oceanic waters. The east margin of the sea was bounded by the low-lying stable platform of the central part of the United States.</p><p>Rocks of the type Montana Group in Montana and equivalent rocks in adjacent States, which consist of eastward-pointing wedges of shallow-water marine and nonmarine strata that enclose westward-pointing wedges of fine-grained marine strata, were deposited in and marginal to this sea. These rocks range in age from middle Santonian to early Maestrichtian and represent a time span of about 14 million years. Twenty-nine distinctive ammonite zones, each with a time span of about half a million years, characterize the marine strata.</p><p>Persistent beds of bentonite in the transgressive part of the Claggett and Bearpaw Shales of Montana and equivalent rocks elsewhere represent periods of explosive volcanism and perhaps concurrent subsidence along the west shore in the vicinity of the Elkhorn Mountains and the Deer Creek volcanic fields in Montana. Seaward retreat of st randlines, marked by deposition of the Telegraph Creek, Eagle, Judith River, and Fox Hills Formations in Montana and the Mesaverde Formation in Wyoming, may be attributed to uplift in near-coastal areas and to an increase in volcaniclastic rocks delivered to the sea.</p><p>Rates of transgression and regression determined for the Montana Group in central Montana reveal that the strandline movement was more rapid during times of transgression. The regression of the Telegraph Creek and Eagle strandlines averaged about 50 miles per million years compared with a rate of about 95 miles per million years for the advance of the strand-line during Claggett time. The Judith River regression averaged about 60 miles per million years compared with movement of the strandline during the Bearpaw advance of about 70 miles per million years.</p><p>The final retreat of marine waters from Montana, marked by the Fox Hills regression, was about 35 miles per million years at first, but near the end of the regression it accelerated to a rate of about 500 miles per million years.</p><p>Rates of sedimentation range from less than 50 feet per million years in the eastern parts of North and South Dakota to at least 2,500 feet in western Wyoming. The low rates in the&nbsp;Dakotas correspond well with modern rates in the open ocean, and the rates in western Wyoming approach the rate of present coastal A previous report (Carter and Adkison, 1972) presented preliminary electrical-log correlations of Tertiary rocks along two intersecting cross sections in the basin, and one of the cross sections included the Deep Creek well.</p><p>The work was done under a cooperative agreement between the U.S. Geological Survey and the Division of Geological and Geophysical Surveys, Department of Natural Resources,' State of Alaska. The writers gratefully acknowledge the assistance of W.'C. Fackler, State Geologist and T. R. Marshall, Jr., Chief Petroleum Geologist, Division of Oil and Gas. The Standard Oil Co. of Cal. gave the conventional cores from the Deep Creek well to the State, and T. R. M. Culbertson, hydraulic engineer, U.S. Geological Survey, Menlo Park, Calif., and preparatory work in Alaska (during June 1-18, 1971) was done with the cooperation of Harry Hulsing, district chief, Alaska District. Examination of river crossings between the Yukon River and Prudhoe Bay was done by helicopter, for the use of which I am indebted to Giles McDonald of the Bureau of Land Management. Most of the crossing sites described here were examined in the field, in too brief a time to permit quantitative measurements but long enough to be of much assistance in interpretation of the aerial photographs. Location of the earlier photographs with reference to the terrane was difficult because of the inaccuracy of existing index sheets, but it was greatly facilitated by Ray Krieg of the R &amp; M Engineering Geological Consultants in Fairbanks and by personnel of the Alyeska Pipeline System Office in Anchorage. Granitic plutons are common to all the provinces and the hot springs are spatially associated with the contacts of these plutons. Of 23 hot springs whose bedrock geology is known, all occur within 3 miles of a granitic pluton. The occurrence of hot springs, however, appears to be independent of the age, composition, or magmatic history of the pluton.</p>\n<p>Preliminary chemical and isotopic analyses suggest the hot springs waters belong to two groups. Most of the analyzed hot springs appear to have chemical and Isotopic compositions indicating they were derived from deeply circulating meteoric water. About 25 percent of the analyzed hot springs show a distinct saline character with high concentrations of chloride, sodium, potassium, and calcium indicating either much more complex water rock reactions than occurred in the other hot springs or the addition of another type of water. The present chemical and isotopic data are insufficient to determine the source of the constituents of the saline hot springs.</p>\n<p>Chemical geothermometers suggest subsurface temperatures in the general range of 100&deg;C to 160&deg;C. If the hot spring waters have derived their heat solely from deep circulation, the waters must have reached depths of 9,000 to 15,000 feet, assuming geothermal gradients of 30&deg;C to 50&deg;C/km. If hot magmatic water has been added to the geothermal systems or if dilution or mixing has occurred, temperatures of 100&deg;C to 160&deg;C may be reached at shallower depths.</p>\n<p>The geologic and chemical data are too preliminary to make an estimate of the potential of the hot springs as a geothermal resource.
