Smaller landmasses were in China, the Seward-Chukotskiy region, northern and eastern Siberia, and near Alaska. Coal deposits and strata bearing land plants covered a large area in central Siberia; saline basins containing red beds formed in the Zechstein, Perm, and West Texas basins as the seas withdrew, generally in the later Permian. Eugeosynclinal troughs, apparently limited to the Pacific border regions, were marked by volcanism and deposition of predominantly clastic sediments in many areas. Platform and miogeosynclinal deposits, dominated by carbonate rocks, preceded saline deposition in the basins and persisted on shallow shelves adjacent to the geosynclines. The Arctic Permian marine fauna evolved in middle Permian time because of partial isolation of the Arctic areas from the southern ocean. Endemism, latitudinal temperature controls, and the effect of ocean currents explain in large part the faunal patterns in Permian seas. Post-Permian tectonic movements account for anomalies in the present positions of some rock sequences and fossils. Northeasterly drift and counterclockwise
rotation of the northern landmasses are suggested. Right-lateral shear along the southern edge of Asia is supported, followed by
northward movement of peninsular India.
","language":"English","publisher":"U.S. Geological Survey","publisherLocation":"Reston, VA","usgsCitation":"Dutro, J.T., and Saldukas, R.B., 1973, Permian paleogeography of the Arctic: Journal of Research of the U.S. Geological Survey, v. 1, no. 5, p. 501-507.","productDescription":"7 p.","startPage":"501","endPage":"507","onlineOnly":"N","additionalOnlineFiles":"N","costCenters":[],"links":[{"id":314020,"rank":1,"type":{"id":11,"text":"Document"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/journal/1973/vol1issue5/report.pdf","text":"Report","size":"19.2 MB","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":314021,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/thumbnails/outside_thumb.jpg"}],"volume":"1","issue":"5","noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"568f9a5de4b0e7a44bc63de2","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Dutro, J. The origin of the general idea of transporting icebergs is obscure; it may date from the 1850's when ice was transported from Alaska to California as a commercial venture. The current revival of the idea, in particular as applied to the water problems of southern California, can be credited to John Issacs of the Scripps Institute of Oceanography (Burt, 1956). However no critical evaluation was ever published. We initially undertook the present study because our intuition “told” us that the idea was untenable and we thought that we could easily prove that this was the case, thereby laying the idea to rest. Our intuition proved to be wrong and we now believe that the idea is, indeed, highly attractive when applied to certain locations in the Southern Hemisphere. This note briefly outlines our approach to analyzing the problem and our results.
","language":"English","publisher":"Cambridge University Press","doi":"10.1017/S0032247400063592","usgsCitation":"Weeks, W., and Campbell, W.J., 1973, Antarctic icebergs as a fresh water resource: Polar Record, v. 16, no. 104, p. 661-665, https://doi.org/10.1017/S0032247400063592.","productDescription":"5 p.","startPage":"661","endPage":"665","costCenters":[],"links":[{"id":414981,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/thumbnails/outside_thumb.jpg"}],"volume":"16","issue":"104","noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationDate":"2009-10-27","publicationStatus":"PW","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Weeks, W.F.","contributorId":39433,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Weeks","given":"W.F.","email":"","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":868214,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1},{"text":"Campbell, W. The lower diamicton is glaciomarine; the upper diamicton is probably a mudflow. The lower diamicton contains the foraminifer Elphidium clavatum Cushman, a species typical of fiords. Similar diamicton crops out along Gastineau Channel near Juneau, 15 miles eastward. Diamicton in both areas reflects deposition in glacier-free fiords during land depression and sea transgression. Consequently,
till-like deposits less than 700 feet above sea level elsewhere in southeastern Alaska should be considered as possibly glaciomarine. Sliding occurred after late 1962, but before July 1964; the March 27, 1964, Alaska earthquake might have caused sliding of diamicton saturated by melting snow and spring rains. The peat in the landslide scarp has a published radiocarbon date of 3,400±250 years B.P. (W-1955). The peat was expected to be older, and to relate to Holocene tectonic movement of Admiralty Island. Simultaneously, a wedge of horizontally bedded sediments, about 1 km thick at its axis, has been deposited in the trench. The time-transgressive facies change between this wedge of sediment and the abyssal-plain sediment sequence shows up as a discontinuity on seismic records. Sediment is being deposited up to 10 times faster in the trench than on the abyssal plain. Ninety percent of the sediment in the trench arrived there by moving down the trench wall as slumps or in turbidity currents, and has been partly redistributed by turbidity currents flowing in a channel along the trench axis; 7 percent has come from the Surveyor Channel distribution system on the abyssal plain; and 3 percent is pelagic (mainly ice rafted). Sediments pass from a sandy facies near the trench wall to a silt-mud facies on the abyssal plain. If a similar trench were exposed on land, the stratigraphic sequence would consist of sandstone grading transitionally downward into shale, and then into an abyssal-plain sequence. Sediment fill in the Aleutian Trench is abnormally thick as a result of Pleistocene glaciation; Neogene trench-fill sediments would be less than 800 m thick.
","language":"English","publisher":"Geological Society of America","doi":"10.1130/0091-7613(1973)1<19:LQSITA>2.0.CO;2","usgsCitation":"Piper, D., von Huene, R., and Duncan, J.R., 1973, Late Quaternary sedimentation in the active eastern Aleutian Trench: Geology, v. 1, no. 1, p. 19-22, https://doi.org/10.1130/0091-7613(1973)1<19:LQSITA>2.0.CO;2.","productDescription":"4 p.","startPage":"19","endPage":"22","costCenters":[],"links":[{"id":414843,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/thumbnails/outside_thumb.jpg"}],"country":"United States","state":"Alaska","otherGeospatial":"Aleutian Trench, Pacific Ocean","geographicExtents":"{\n \"type\": \"FeatureCollection\",\n \"features\": [\n {\n \"type\": \"Feature\",\n \"properties\": {},\n \"geometry\": {\n \"coordinates\": [\n [\n [\n -151.26158724216202,\n 58.39620746846026\n ],\n [\n -151.26158724216202,\n 55.15578585085143\n ],\n [\n -141.5516107444637,\n 55.15578585085143\n ],\n [\n -141.5516107444637,\n 58.39620746846026\n ],\n [\n -151.26158724216202,\n 58.39620746846026\n ]\n ]\n ],\n \"type\": \"Polygon\"\n }\n }\n ]\n}","volume":"1","issue":"1","noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Piper, David J. Packer seats were poor in the uncased part of the hole because of unstable wall conditions, and leakage around packers occurred during some tests. However, leakage generally was slight, as shown on pressure-gage charts, and had little effect on the tests. The static water levels in the intervals tested ranged from 31.6 meters (104 feet) below land surface in the upper interval tested to about 115 meters (377 feet) below land surface in the lower interval tested, indicating decreasing head with depth. The relative specific capacities of isolated zones ranged from less than 0.001 cubic meter per day per meter (less than 0.001 gallon per minute per foot) of drawdown to 0.898 cubic meter per day per meter (0.050 gallon per minute per foot) of drawdown.
","language":"English","publisher":"U.S. Geological Survey","publisherLocation":"Reston, VA","doi":"10.3133/70156958","usgsCitation":"Ballance, W.C., 1973, Hydraulic tests in hole UAe-3, Amchitka Island, Alaska (Revision 1), ii, 30 p., https://doi.org/10.3133/70156958.","productDescription":"ii, 30 p.","numberOfPages":"35","onlineOnly":"N","additionalOnlineFiles":"N","costCenters":[],"links":[{"id":307875,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/thumbnails/ofr47426.JPG"},{"id":308552,"type":{"id":11,"text":"Document"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/unnumbered/70156958/report.pdf","text":"Report","size":"7,610 KB","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}}],"country":"United States","state":"Alaska","otherGeospatial":"Amchitka Island, Aleutian Islands","geographicExtents":"{\n  \"type\": \"FeatureCollection\",\n  \"features\": [\n    {\n      \"type\": \"Feature\",\n      \"properties\": {},\n      \"geometry\": {\n        \"type\": \"Polygon\",\n        \"coordinates\": [\n          [\n            [\n              178.584136963,\n              51.63677159243599\n            ],\n            [\n              178.592376709,\n              51.61290019118336\n            ],\n            [\n              179.21585083,\n              51.3254629443313\n            ],\n            [\n             179.508361816,\n              51.37520943448463\n            ],\n            [\n              179.057922363,\n              51.587309751245456\n            ],\n            [\n              178.628082275,\n              51.67936786087718\n            ],\n            [\n              178.584136963,\n              51.63677159243599\n            ]\n          ]\n        ]\n      }\n    }\n  ]\n}","edition":"Revision 1","noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"55f7efb8e4b05d6c4e4fa975","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Ballance, Wilbur C.","contributorId":50436,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Ballance","given":"Wilbur","email":"","middleInitial":"C.","affiliations":[{"id":595,"text":"U.S. Geological Survey","active":false,"usgs":true}],"preferred":false,"id":571248,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1}]}}

Most of the birds were shot on the breeding grounds in May. The movement into eastern Asia of pintails banded in the interior of North America was directly correlated with the overflight of the southern portion of the breeding range in North America (r = +0.73**); this overflight resulted from drought conditions (Smith 1970). Thus, the magnitude of the pintail movement into eastern Asia is believed to be dependent upon water conditions some 3,000 miles away. A higher percentage of the pintails banded in the west was reported from eastern Asia, although the recovery rate index was not significantly correlated with the percentage of pintails found in northern Canada and Alaska (r = +0.46 NS). Apparently, a portion of the pintails which winter in the western United States annually nest in Siberia, regardless of water conditions on the North American breeding grounds.
","language":"English","publisher":"Wiley","doi":"10.2307/3799734","usgsCitation":"Henny, C.J., 1973, Drought displaced movement of North American pintails into Siberia: Journal of Wildlife Management, v. 37, no. 1, p. 23-29, https://doi.org/10.2307/3799734.","productDescription":"7 p.","startPage":"23","endPage":"29","costCenters":[{"id":531,"text":"Patuxent Wildlife Research Center","active":true,"usgs":true}],"links":[{"id":197277,"rank":1,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/thumbnails/outside_thumb.jpg"}],"country":"Japan, Korea, Russia, United Staetes","state":"Alaska","volume":"37","issue":"1","noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e4a5ee4b07f02db633dc8","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Henny, Charles J.","contributorId":12578,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Henny","given":"Charles","email":"","middleInitial":"J.","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":332778,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1}]}}
