Consequently, the factors affecting habitat suitability for Neotropical migrants and the potential effects of tropical deforestation on migrants are not well understood. We estimated overwinter survival and capture probabilities of Wood Thrush (</span><i>Hylochichla mustelina</i><span>), Ovenbird (</span><i>Seiurus aurocapillus</i><span>), Hooded Warbler (</span><i>Wilsonia citrina</i><span>), and Kentucky Warbler (</span><i>Oporornis formosus</i><span>) inhabiting two common tropical habitat types, mature and early-successional forest. Our results suggest that large differences (for example, ratio of survival rates (γ) ≤ 0.85) in overwinter survival between these habitats do not exist for any of these species. Age ratios did not differ between habitats, but males were more common in forest habitats and females more common in successional habitats for Hooded Warblers and Kentucky Warblers. Future research on overwinter survival should address the need for age- and sex-specific survival estimates before we can draw strong conclusions regarding winter habitat suitability. Our estimates of overwinter survival extrapolated to annual survival rates that were generally lower than previous estimates of annual survival of migratory birds. Capture probability differed between habitats for Kentucky Warblers, but our results provide strong evidence against large differences in capture probability between habitats for Wood Thrush, Hooded Warblers, and Ovenbirds. We found no temporal or among-site differences in survival or capture probability for any of the four species. Additional research is needed to examine the effects of winter habitat use on survival during migration and between-winter survival.</span></p>","language":"English","publisher":"Wiley","doi":"10.1046/j.1523-1739.1995.09040855.x","usgsCitation":"Conway, C., Powell, G., and Nichols, J., 1995, Overwinter survival of neotropical migratory birds in early-successional and mature tropical forests: Conservation Biology, v. 9, no. 4, p. 855-864, https://doi.org/10.1046/j.1523-1739.1995.09040855.x.","productDescription":"10 p.","startPage":"855","endPage":"864","costCenters":[{"id":531,"text":"Patuxent Wildlife Research Center","active":true,"usgs":true}],"links":[{"id":193543,"rank":1,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/thumbnails/outside_thumb.jpg"}],"volume":"9","issue":"4","noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationDate":"2002-01-19","publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e4ae4e4b07f02db68a144","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Conway, C.J.","contributorId":33417,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Conway","given":"C.J.","email":"","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":337979,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1},{"text":"Powell, G.V.N.","contributorId":23894,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Powell","given":"G.V.N.","email":"","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":337978,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":2},{"text":"Nichols, J.D. 0000-0002-7631-2890","orcid":"https://orcid.org/0000-0002-7631-2890","contributorId":14332,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Nichols","given":"J.D.","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":337977,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":3}]}}

Principal components analyses of 26 cranial measurements of 151 adult specimens and 11 pelage characters of 111 specimens, clearly distinguish L. culpaeus from the other two taxa.  Lycalopex griseus and L. gymnocercus show clinal variation in cranial measurements and pelage characters.  Qualitative cranial characters, used as diagnostic for L. griseus and L. gymnocercus, revealed great nongeographic variation. We conclude that L. griseus and L. gymnocercus are conspecific, and should be known as L. gymnocercus.  Therefore, we recognize only two species of the genus Lycalopex (L. culpaeus and L. gymnocercus) in Argentina. A dike with tide control structures, located at the mouth of the Herring River salt marsh estuarine system (Wellfleet, Massachusetts) since 1908, has effectively restricted tidal exchange, causing changes in marsh vegetation composition, degraded water quality, and reduced abundance of fish and macroinvertebrate communities. Restoration of this estuary by reintroduction of tidal exchange is a feasible management alternative. However, restoration efforts must proceed with caution as residential dwellings and a golf course are located immediately adjacent to and in places within the tidal wetland. A numerical model was developed to predict tide height levels for numerous alternative openings through the Herring River dike. Given these model predictions and knowledge of elevations of flood-prone areas, it becomes possible to make responsible decisions regarding restoration. Moreover, tidal flooding elevations relative to the wetland surface must be known to predict optimum conditions for ecological recovery. The tide height model has a universal role, as demonstrated by successful application at a nearby salt marsh restoration site in Provincetown, Massachusetts. Salt marsh restoration is a valuable management tool toward maintaining and enhancing coastal zone habitat diversity. The tide height model presented in this paper will enable both scientists and resource professionals to assign a degree of predictability when designing salt marsh restoration programs.","language":"English","publisher":"Springer","doi":"10.1007/BF02471967","usgsCitation":"Roman, C.T., Garvine, R., and Portnoy, J.W., 1995, Hydrologic modeling as a predictive basis for ecological restoration of salt marshes: Environmental Management, v. 19, no. 4, p. 559-566, https://doi.org/10.1007/BF02471967.","productDescription":"8 p.","startPage":"559","endPage":"566","numberOfPages":"8","costCenters":[{"id":531,"text":"Patuxent Wildlife Research Center","active":true,"usgs":true}],"links":[{"id":199218,"rank":1,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/thumbnails/outside_thumb.jpg"}],"volume":"19","issue":"4","noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e4acfe4b07f02db680037","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Roman, C. Differences in growth parameters among  individual chicks are used to explore differences in parental  performance, whereas differences in average growth parameters  among colonies and years are used to explore differences in  average environmental conditions.  Chicks were marked at  hatching and weighed at one- or two-day intervals.  For each chick that survived to fledging, we calculated two measures  of growth: linear growth rate and asymptotic mass.  There were no significant differences between growth parameters of first-hatched chicks in broods of one and two.  Both measures of  growth were significantly lower and more variable for second-hatched chicks than for first-hatched chicks.  Both measures  were significantly positively related to egg mass and negatively related to hatch date.  After controlling for these variables, differences between colonies and among years were relatively small and inconsistent.  Mean survival of second-hatched chicks was positively correlated with the mean growth  rate of survivors across colonies and years.  These findings are consistent with a general hypothesis that growth of chicks reflects individual parental performance and parental  quality.","language":"English","publisher":"Oxford Academic","doi":"10.2307/1369019","usgsCitation":"Nisbet, I., Spendelow, J., and Hatfield, J., 1995, Variations in growth of roseate tern chicks: Condor, v. 97, no. 2, p. 335-344, https://doi.org/10.2307/1369019.","productDescription":"10 p.","startPage":"335","endPage":"344","numberOfPages":"10","costCenters":[{"id":531,"text":"Patuxent Wildlife Research Center","active":true,"usgs":true}],"links":[{"id":194227,"rank":1,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/thumbnails/outside_thumb.jpg"}],"volume":"97","issue":"2","noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e482be4b07f02db4e802b","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Nisbet, I.C.T.","contributorId":54942,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Nisbet","given":"I.C.T.","email":"","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":336959,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1},{"text":"Spendelow, J. We exposed adult male mallard ducks to dietary concentrations of 300 ppm arsenic as sodium arsenate, 1,600 ppm boron as boric acid, or both and estimated the tissue accumulation and loss rates when the ducks were returned to uncontaminated food. Both elements were accumulated rapidly; equilibrium levels were reached for arsenic in 10 to 30 d and for boron in 2 to 15 d. Accumulation of each element was slowed by the presence of the other in the diet. Boron was eliminated by mallards very rapidly, with few detectable residues ≥ 1 d after removal of boron from the diet; arsenic was also rapidly lost with half-lives of 1 to 3 d (half-lives were not constant throughout the loss period). Arsenic loss rate was not affected by the presence of boron. Arsenic accumulated to the highest level in liver tissue, with blood and brain levels lower; concentrations in the liver and blood were proportional but affected by the presence of boron. We hypothesize that acephate may have produced aberrant migratory behavior by affecting the memory of the migratory route and wintering ground. Each stage of the nesting cycle (egg laying, incubation, early chick rearing, and late chick rearing) was characterized by distinct trends or levels of behavior. During egg laying, female attentiveness to tile nest increased, and male attentiveness decreased. Throughout incubation and the first several days of early chick rearing, females were highly attentive to their nests, whereas males rarely entered the nest cavities. Female attentiveness then began to decline. Male attentiveness to the nest was sporadic until chicks were 10-12 days old. when all males began to enter their nests at least once each day. During late chick rearing, both male and female attentiveness were erratic and highly variable. Biologists may be able to use these results to identify nest problems and the need for management intervention when patterns of nest attentiveness deviate from the limits described in this study..","largerWorkType":{"id":2,"text":"Article"},"largerWorkTitle":"Wilson Bulletin","largerWorkSubtype":{"id":10,"text":"Journal Article"},"language":"English","usgsCitation":"Wilson, K., Field, R., and Wilson, M., 1995, Successful nesting behavior of Puerto Rican parrots: The Wilson Bulletin, v. 107, no. 3, p. 518-529.","productDescription":"518-529","startPage":"518","endPage":"529","numberOfPages":"12","costCenters":[{"id":531,"text":"Patuxent Wildlife Research Center","active":true,"usgs":true}],"links":[{"id":194220,"rank":0,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/thumbnails/outside_thumb.jpg"},{"id":15961,"rank":300,"type":{"id":11,"text":"Document"},"url":"https://elibrary.unm.edu/sora/Wilson/v107n03/p0518-p0529.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}}],"volume":"107","issue":"3","noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e4b05e4b07f02db699950","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Wilson, K.A.","contributorId":45021,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Wilson","given":"K.A.","email":"","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":336674,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1},{"text":"Field, R.","contributorId":105813,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Field","given":"R.","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":336675,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":2},{"text":"Wilson, M.H.","contributorId":17713,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Wilson","given":"M.H.","email":"","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":336673,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":3}]}}

The principal system components consist of color CCTV camera with zoom lens, pan/tilt system, infrared illuminator, heavy duty tripod, coaxial cable, coaxitron system, half-duplex equalizing video/control amplifier, timelapse video cassette recorder, color video monitor, VHS video cassettes, portable generator, fuel tank and power cable. This system was developed and used in a study of Mississippi sandhiIl Crane (Grus canadensis pratensis) behaviors during incubation, hatching and fledging. The main advantages of the system are minimal downtime where a complete record of every event, its time of occurrence and duration, are permanently recorded and can be replayed as many times as necessary thereafter to retrieve the data. The system is particularly applicable for studies of behavior and predation, for counting individuals, or recording difficult to observe activities. The system can be run continuously for several weeks by two people, reducing personnel costs. This paper is intended to provide biologists who have litte knowledge of electronics with a system that might be useful to their specific needs. The disadvantages of this system are the initial costs (about $9800 basic, 1990-1991 U.S. dollars) and the time required to playback video cassette tapes for data retrieval, but the playback can be sped up when litte or no activity of interest is taking place. In our study, the positive aspects of the system far outweighed the negative.","largerWorkType":{"id":2,"text":"Article"},"largerWorkTitle":"Journal of Field Ornithology","largerWorkSubtype":{"id":10,"text":"Journal Article"},"language":"English","usgsCitation":"Sykes, P., Ryman, W., Kepler, C.B., and Hardy, J., 1995, A 24-hour remote surveillance system for terrestrial wildlife studies: Journal of Field Ornithology, v. 66, no. 2, p. 199-211.","productDescription":"199-211","startPage":"199","endPage":"211","numberOfPages":"13","costCenters":[{"id":531,"text":"Patuxent Wildlife Research Center","active":true,"usgs":true}],"links":[{"id":198137,"rank":0,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/thumbnails/outside_thumb.jpg"},{"id":15956,"rank":300,"type":{"id":11,"text":"Document"},"url":"https://elibrary.unm.edu/sora/JFO/v066n02/p0199-p0211.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}}],"volume":"66","issue":"2","noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e4b32e4b07f02db6b42ec","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Sykes, P.W.
