Results from the single-hole tests showed several significant correlations between permeability and injection rate and between permeability and test order. Fracture permeability values determined by cross-hole pneumatic testing in fractured ash-flow tuff ranged from 0.81 to 3.49 * 1044 m2, depending on injection rate and analysis method used. Results from the cross-hole tests monitor intervals showed no significant correlation between permeability and injection rate; however, results from the injection interval showed a significant correlation between injection rate and permeability. Porosity estimates from the 'cross-hole testing range from 0.8 to 2.0 percent. The maximum temperature change associated with the pneumatic testing was 1.2'(2 measured in the injection interval during cross-hole testing. The maximum temperature change in the guard and monitor intervals was O.Ip C. The maximum error introduced into the permeability values due to temperature fluctuations is approximately 4 percent. Data from temperature monitoring in the borehole indicated a positive correlation between the temperature decrease in the injection interval during recovery testing and the gas-injection rate.  The thermocouple psychrometers indicated that water vapor was condensing in the boreholes during testing. The psychrometers in the guard and monitor intervals detected the drier injected gas as an increase in the dry bulb reading. The relative humidity in the test intervals was always higher than the upper measurement limit of the psychrometers. Although the installation of the packer system may have altered the water balance of the borehole, the gas-injection testing resulted in minimal or no changes in the borehole relative humidity.","language":"ENGLISH","publisher":"U.S. Geological Survey :\r\nEarth Science Information Center, Open-File Reports Section [distributor],","doi":"10.3133/wri954073","usgsCitation":"LeCain, G., 1995, Pneumatic testing in 45-degree-inclined boreholes in ash-flow tuff near Superior, Arizona: U.S. Geological Survey Water-Resources Investigations Report 95-4073, iv, 27 p. :ill. ;28 cm., https://doi.org/10.3133/wri954073.","productDescription":"iv, 27 p. :ill. ;28 cm.","costCenters":[],"links":[{"id":123952,"rank":0,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/wri/1995/4073/report-thumb.jpg"},{"id":57109,"rank":300,"type":{"id":11,"text":"Document"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/wri/1995/4073/report.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}}],"noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e47a3e4b07f02db496565","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"LeCain, G.D.","contributorId":22810,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"LeCain","given":"G.D.","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":199536,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1}]}}

The analog-site studies were conducted to aid in the estimation of recharge to the paleohydrologic regime associated with ground water in the vicinity of Yucca Mountain under wetter climatic conditions. The two analog sites are located to the north and at higher elevations than Yucca Mountain, and the prevailing (current) climatic conditions at these sites is thought to be representative of the possible range of paleoclimatic conditions in the general area of Yucca Mountain during the Quaternary. Two independent modeling approaches were conducted at each of the analog sites using observed hydrologic data on precipitation, temperature, solar radiation stream discharge, and chloride-ion water chemistry for a 6-year study period (October 1986 through September 1992). Both models quantify the hydrologic water-balance equation and yield estimates of ground-water recharge, given appropriate input data. The first model uses a traditional approach to quantify watershed hydrology through a precipitation-runoff modeling system that accounts for the spatial variability of hydrologic inputs, processes, and responses (outputs) using a dailycomputational time step. The second model is based on the conservative nature of the dissolved chloride ion in selected hydrologic environments, and its use as a natural tracer allows the computation of acoupled, water and chloride-ion, mass-balance system of equations to estimate available water (sum ofsurface runoff and groundwater recharge).  Results of the modeling approaches support the conclusion that reasonable estimates of average-annual recharge to ground water range from about 1 to 3 centimeters per year for 3-Springs basin (the drier site), and from about 30 to 32 centimeters per year for East Stewart basin (the wetter site). The most reliable results are those derived from a reduced form of the chloride-ion model because they reflect integrated, basinwide processes in terms of only three measured variables: precipitation amount, precipitation chemistry, and streamflow chemistry.","language":"English","publisher":"U.S. Geological Survey","doi":"10.3133/wri944104","usgsCitation":"Lichty, R., and McKinley, P.W., 1995, Estimates of ground-water recharge rates for two small basins in central Nevada: U.S. Geological Survey Water-Resources Investigations Report 94-4104, iv, 31 p., https://doi.org/10.3133/wri944104.","productDescription":"iv, 31 p.","costCenters":[],"links":[{"id":123589,"rank":1,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/wri/1994/4104/report-thumb.jpg"},{"id":57161,"rank":2,"type":{"id":11,"text":"Document"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/wri/1994/4104/report.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":466115,"rank":3,"type":{"id":36,"text":"NGMDB Index Page"},"url":"https://ngmdb.usgs.gov/Prodesc/proddesc_47994.htm","text":"3-Springs basin","linkFileType":{"id":5,"text":"html"}},{"id":466116,"rank":4,"type":{"id":36,"text":"NGMDB Index Page"},"url":"https://ngmdb.usgs.gov/Prodesc/proddesc_47995.htm","text":"East Stewart Creek basin","linkFileType":{"id":5,"text":"html"}}],"country":"United States","state":"Nevada","geographicExtents":"{\n  \"type\": \"FeatureCollection\",\n  \"features\": [\n    {\n      \"type\": \"Feature\",\n      \"properties\": {},\n      \"geometry\": {\n        \"coordinates\": [\n          [\n            [\n              -118,\n              38.5\n            ],\n            [\n              -118,\n              37.75\n            ],\n            [\n              -116,\n              37.75\n            ],\n            [\n              -116,\n              38.5\n            ],\n            [\n              -118,\n              38.5\n            ]\n          ]\n        ],\n        \"type\": \"Polygon\"\n      }\n    }\n  ]\n}","noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e4a7fe4b07f02db64869b","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Lichty, R.W.","contributorId":46987,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Lichty","given":"R.W.","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":199659,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1},{"text":"McKinley, P. Sulfate and sulfonate-based surfectants are reacted with methylene blue to form a blue-colored complex.  The complex is extracted into chloroform, back-washed with an acidified phosphate-based buffer solution, and measured against external standards with a probe spectrophotometer.  The method detection limt for routine analysis is 0.02 milligram per liter.  The precision is plus/minus 10 percent relative standard deviation.  The positive bias from nitrate and chloride and U.S. Geological Survey method O-3111-83 for methylene blue active substances is minized by adding a back-washing step.","language":"English","publisher":"U.S. Geological Survey","doi":"10.3133/ofr95189","usgsCitation":"Burkhardt, M.R., Cinotto, P., Frahm, G.W., Woodworth, M.T., and Pritt, J.W., 1995, Methods of analysis by the U.S. Geological Survey National Water Quality Laboratory-Determination of methylene blue active substances by spectrophotometry: U.S. Geological Survey Open-File Report 95-189, iv, 16 p., https://doi.org/10.3133/ofr95189.","productDescription":"iv, 16 p.","costCenters":[{"id":452,"text":"National Water Quality Laboratory","active":true,"usgs":true}],"links":[{"id":149914,"rank":0,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1995/0189/report-thumb.jpg"},{"id":1037,"rank":100,"type":{"id":15,"text":"Index Page"},"url":"https://nwql.usgs.gov/Public/pubs/OFR95-189/OFR95-189.html","linkFileType":{"id":5,"text":"html"}},{"id":46476,"rank":300,"type":{"id":11,"text":"Document"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1995/0189/report.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}}],"noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e4a54e4b07f02db62bbea","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Burkhardt, Mark R.","contributorId":27872,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Burkhardt","given":"Mark","email":"","middleInitial":"R.","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":175990,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1},{"text":"Cinotto, Pete J.","contributorId":60668,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Cinotto","given":"Pete J.","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":175992,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":2},{"text":"Frahm, Galen W.","contributorId":36952,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Frahm","given":"Galen","email":"","middleInitial":"W.","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":175991,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":3},{"text":"Woodworth, Mark T. woodwort@usgs.gov","contributorId":3452,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Woodworth","given":"Mark","email":"woodwort@usgs.gov","middleInitial":"T.","affiliations":[],"preferred":true,"id":175988,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":4},{"text":"Pritt, Jeffrey W.","contributorId":12505,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Pritt","given":"Jeffrey","email":"","middleInitial":"W.","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":175989,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":5}]}}

They have learned that shaking near the source of earthquakes is far more severe than once thought and that soft ground shakes more strongly than hard rock.This knowledge has enabled engineers to improve design standards so that structures arebetter able to survive strong earthquakes. When the 1989 Loma Prieta earthquake struck, 42 people tragically lost their lives in the collapse of a half-mile-long section of the Cypress structure, an elevated double-decker freeway in Oakland, California.Yet adjacent parts of this structure withstood the magnitude 6.9 temblor—why? The part that collapsed was built on man-made fill over soft mud, whereas adjacent sections stood on older, firmer sand and gravel deposits. Following the collapse, scientists set out instruments in the area to record the earthquake's many strong aftershocks. These instruments showed that the softer ground shook more forcefully than the firmer material-even twice as violently","language":"English","publisher":"U.S. Geological Survey","publisherLocation":"Reston, VA","doi":"10.3133/fs17695","collaboration":"Prepared in cooperation with California Division of Mines and Geology, California Institute of Technology, Columbia University, Pacific Gas and Electric Company, University of Puerto Rico Mayaguez, U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, U.S. Bureau of Reclamation, U.S. Department of Energy, U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs, Many smaller agencies, Private building owners","usgsCitation":"Çelebi, M., Spudich, P.A., Page, R.A., and Stauffer, P.H., 1995, Saving lives through better design standards: U.S. Geological Survey Fact Sheet 176-95, 2 p., https://doi.org/10.3133/fs17695.","productDescription":"2 p.","costCenters":[],"links":[{"id":117155,"rank":0,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/thumbnails/fs_176_95.bmp"},{"id":613,"rank":100,"type":{"id":15,"text":"Index Page"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/fs/1995/fs176-95/","linkFileType":{"id":5,"text":"html"}},{"id":280375,"type":{"id":11,"text":"Document"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/fs/1995/0176/pdf/fs176-95.pdf"}],"country":"United States","state":"California","noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e4a0ee4b07f02db5fdba3","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Çelebi, Mehmet 0000-0002-4769-7357 celebi@usgs.gov","orcid":"https://orcid.org/0000-0002-4769-7357","contributorId":3205,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Çelebi","given":"Mehmet","email":"celebi@usgs.gov","affiliations":[{"id":237,"text":"Earthquake Science Center","active":true,"usgs":true}],"preferred":false,"id":151016,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1},{"text":"Spudich, Paul A. 0000-0002-9484-4997 spudich@usgs.gov","orcid":"https://orcid.org/0000-0002-9484-4997","contributorId":2372,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Spudich","given":"Paul","email":"spudich@usgs.gov","middleInitial":"A.","affiliations":[{"id":237,"text":"Earthquake Science Center","active":true,"usgs":true}],"preferred":true,"id":151015,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":2},{"text":"Page, Robert A.","contributorId":17207,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Page","given":"Robert","email":"","middleInitial":"A.","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":151017,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":3},{"text":"Stauffer, Peter H. pstauffe@usgs.gov","contributorId":1219,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Stauffer","given":"Peter","email":"pstauffe@usgs.gov","middleInitial":"H.","affiliations":[],"preferred":true,"id":151014,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":4}]}}

As part of ongoing site characterization studies of Yucca Mountain directed toward this understanding of spatial variability, laboratory measurements of porosity, bull* and particle density, saturated hydraulic conductivity, and sorptivity have been obtained for a set of outcrop samples that form a systematic,two dimensional grid that covers a large exposure of the basal Tiva Canyon Tuff of the Paintbrush Group of Miocene age at Yucca Mountain. The samples form a detailed vertical grid roughly parallel to the transport direction of the parent ash flows, and they exhibit material-property varia- tions in an interval of major lithologic change overlying a potential nuclear-waste repository at Yucca Mountain.  The observed changes in hydrologic properties were systematic and consistent with the changes expected for the nonwelded to welded transition at the base of a major ash-flow sequence. Porosity, saturated hydraulic conductivity, and sorptivity decreased upward from the base of the Tiva Canyon Tuff, indicating the progressive compaction of ash- rich volcanic debris and the onset of welding with increased overburden pressure from the accumulating ash-flow sheet. The rate of decrease in the values of these material properties varied with vertical position within the transition interval. In contrast, bulk-density values increased upward, a change that also is consistent with progressive compaction and the onset of welding. Particle-density values remained almost constant throughout the transition interval, probably indicating compositional (chemical) homogeneity.","language":"ENGLISH","publisher":"U.S. Geological Survey :\r\nEarth Science Information Center, Open-File Reports Section [distributor],","doi":"10.3133/wri954061","usgsCitation":"Rautman, C., Flint, L.E., Flint, A.L., and Istok, J., 1995, Physical and hydrologic properties of outcrop samples from a nonwelded to welded tuff transition, Yucca Mountain, Nevada: U.S. Geological Survey Water-Resources Investigations Report 95-4061, iv, 29 p. :ill., map ;28 cm. For surface water, most data were concentrated at sites on the main stem Willamette River or near the mouths of major tributaries. All seasons were represented. Data for nitrogen and phosphorus species were readily available, but simultaneously collected discharge measurements frequently were not. Seven primary sites were used for a quantitative analysis of nutrient data in surface water. At six of the seven primary sites, median concentrations of nitrite plus nitrate and total phosphorus were less than 0.5 milligrams per liter (mg/L) as nitrogen (N) and 0.1 mg/L as phosphorus (P), respectively. These concen- trations were lower than national median concen- trations for basins with similar land uses. At the Pudding River site, which received significant point-source and agricultural nonpoint-source inputs, median values for nitrite plus nitrate and total phosphorus were 1.4 mg/L as N and 0.2 mg/L as P, respectively. Nitrite-plus-nitrate concentrations at this site were seasonally dependent, with the highest concentrations occurring during winter. Forested sites had significantly lower water temperatures and nutrient concentrations than urban or agricultural sites. Evidence of diel variations in dissolved oxygen concentrations and pH values suggest that, at some sites, low dissolved oxygen concentrations may be a problem during early morning hours in the summer. Historical nutrient data for ground water were limited primarily to nitrate and nitrite-plus-nitrate determinations for wells completed in the basin-fill and alluvial aquifer. Nitrate and nitrite-plus-nitrate concentrations in this aquifer showed a weak inverse relationship with depth.","language":"ENGLISH","publisher":"U.S. Geological Survey ;\r\nU.S. Geological Survey, Earth Science Information Center, Open-File Reports Section [distributor],","doi":"10.3133/wri954036","usgsCitation":"Bonn, B.A., Hinkle, S., Wentz, D., and Uhrich, M., 1995, Analysis of nutrient and ancillary water-quality data for surface and ground water of the Willamette Basin, Oregon, 1980-90: U.S. Geological Survey Water-Resources Investigations Report 95-4036, xi, 88 p. :ill., maps (some col.) ;28 cm., https://doi.org/10.3133/wri954036.","productDescription":"xi, 88 p. :ill., maps (some col.) ;28 cm.","costCenters":[{"id":518,"text":"Oregon Water Science Center","active":true,"usgs":true}],"links":[{"id":123742,"rank":0,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/wri/1995/4036/report-thumb.jpg"},{"id":54124,"rank":300,"type":{"id":11,"text":"Document"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/wri/1995/4036/report.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}}],"noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e4acfe4b07f02db68021c","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Bonn, B. Because the study basins face continued urban development, this method was developed to provide a technique for assessing the effects of alternative urban-development plans on runoff characteristics. A conceptual model of runoff generation and three numerical simulation models, called basin models, were constructed for the study basins. Hydrologic Simulation Program- FORTRAN was the program used to construct the basin models. The basin models were constructed using parameter values based on qualitative rainfall- runoff relations defined in the conceptual model. The features of the conceptual model, incorporated in the basin models, were assessed by calibration and evaluation of the basin models with observed streamflow data collected from March 1988 through March 1990. The simulation results from the basin models generally confirmed the study's conceptual model of runoff generation. Absolute differences between simulated and observed streamflows were less than 6 percent for total runoff volumes, equal to or less than 32 percent for daily mean discharges, less than 32 percent for storm runoff volumes, and less than 33 percent for peak discharges. Although the conceptual model adequately described runoff generation from rainfall, it did not adequately describe the actual flow paths from land segments to streams.","language":"ENGLISH","publisher":"U.S. Geological Survey ;\r\nEarth Science Information Center, Open-File Reports Section [distributor],","doi":"10.3133/wri944038","usgsCitation":"Berris, S., 1995, Conceptualization and simulation of runoff generation from rainfall for three basins in Thurston County, Washington: U.S. Geological Survey Water-Resources Investigations Report 94-4038, vi, 149 p. :ill., maps ;28 cm., https://doi.org/10.3133/wri944038.","productDescription":"vi, 149 p. :ill., maps ;28 cm.","costCenters":[],"links":[{"id":123602,"rank":0,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/wri/1994/4038/report-thumb.jpg"},{"id":54992,"rank":300,"type":{"id":11,"text":"Document"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/wri/1994/4038/report.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}}],"noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e4b00e4b07f02db6980f6","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Berris, S.N.","contributorId":46570,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Berris","given":"S.N.","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":195969,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1}]}}

These rocks form a complex, heterogeneous, leaky, multiaquifer system comprised of a series of gently dipping lithologic units with different hydraulic properties. Ground water is unconfined in the shallower part of the aquifer and confined or semiconfined in the deeper part of the aquifer. Water levels measured in monitor well clusters and borehole-flow measurements made in open boreholes show a downward hydraulic head gradient at the site, caused in part by the pumping of nearby, deep public-supply wells and the Fischer and Porter treatment system extraction wells. Downward borehole flow was measured at rates up to 9 gallons per minute. Aquifer-isolation tests were run in the six boreholes to obtain depth-discrete specific-capacity and water-quality data. On the basis of specific-capacity data for 27 isolated intervals, specific capacity is not related to depth.</p><p>Water levels in monitor wells at the Fischer and Porter Site are greatly affected by the pumping of nearby public-supply wells, as well as the pumping of the Fischer and Porter treatment system extraction wells. Pumping of the public-supply wells causes daily water-level fluctuations in wells at the site as great as 5.3 feet. The shutdown of the Fischer and Porter treatment system extraction wells caused a rise in water level in all wells screened in the intermediate and deep zones. The rise in water level was as great as 4.3 feet in the intermediate zone and as great as 5.9 feet in the deep zone. The direction of ground-water flow is toward the north in the shallow and intermediate zones and toward the west and west-southwest in the deep zone. Ground-water discharge probably is to the unnamed tributary to Pennypack Creek north and west of the site.</p><p>Volatile organic compounds (VOC's) were detected in most depth-discrete water samples. No general trend of increasing or decreasing concentrations of VOC's with depth were observed, and none of the isolated intervals had highly elevated concentrations of VOC's. Observed fairly constant concentrations of VOC's with depth are the result of the downward head gradient and the former presence of open boreholes on the site. The downward head gradient and pumping of nearby, deep public-supply wells caused the vertical migration and outward movement of VOC's into the aquifer through former supply and monitor wells of open-hole construction in the main area of contamination. </p>","language":"English","publisher":"U.S. Geological Survey","doi":"10.3133/wri954220","usgsCitation":"Sloto, R.A., Macchiaroli, P., and Conger, R.W., 1995, Geohydrology and vertical distribution of volatile organic compounds in ground water, Fischer and Porter Company Superfund Site, Warminster, Bucks County, Pennsylvania: U.S. Geological Survey Water-Resources Investigations Report 95-4220, Report: xii, 137 p.; 3 Plates: 26.95 x 13.94 inches or smaller, https://doi.org/10.3133/wri954220.","productDescription":"Report: xii, 137 p.; 3 Plates: 26.95 x 13.94 inches or smaller","costCenters":[{"id":532,"text":"Pennsylvania Water Science Center","active":true,"usgs":true}],"links":[{"id":123366,"rank":0,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/wri/1995/4220/report-thumb.jpg"},{"id":58578,"rank":300,"type":{"id":11,"text":"Document"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/wri/1995/4220/report.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":358464,"rank":3,"type":{"id":17,"text":"Plate"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/wri/1995/4220/plate-1.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":358465,"rank":4,"type":{"id":17,"text":"Plate"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/wri/1995/4220/plate-2.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":358466,"rank":5,"type":{"id":17,"text":"Plate"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/wri/1995/4220/plate-3.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}}],"country":"United States","state":"Pennsylvania","county":"Bucks County","city":"Warminster","geographicExtents":"{\n  \"type\": \"FeatureCollection\",\n  \"features\": [\n    {\n      \"type\": \"Feature\",\n      \"properties\": {},\n      \"geometry\": {\n        \"type\": \"Polygon\",\n        \"coordinates\": [\n          [\n            [\n              -75.1,\n              40.16666\n            ],\n            [\n              -75.05,\n              40.16666\n            ],\n            [\n              -75.05,\n              40.2\n            ],\n            [\n              -75.1,\n              40.2\n            ],\n            [\n              -75.1,\n              40.16666\n            ]\n          ]\n        ]\n      }\n    }\n  ]\n}","noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e4b1be4b07f02db6a8be0","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Sloto, Ronald A. rasloto@usgs.gov","contributorId":424,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Sloto","given":"Ronald","email":"rasloto@usgs.gov","middleInitial":"A.","affiliations":[{"id":532,"text":"Pennsylvania Water Science Center","active":true,"usgs":true}],"preferred":true,"id":202103,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1},{"text":"Macchiaroli, Paola","contributorId":96309,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Macchiaroli","given":"Paola","email":"","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":202104,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":2},{"text":"Conger, Randall W. rwconger@usgs.gov","contributorId":2086,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Conger","given":"Randall","email":"rwconger@usgs.gov","middleInitial":"W.","affiliations":[{"id":532,"text":"Pennsylvania Water Science Center","active":true,"usgs":true}],"preferred":true,"id":202102,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":3}]}}

This event occurred during a period of widespread arc magmatism and intra-arc thrusting in the Cordillera related to subduction under the west edge of North America. Jurassic plutons in the eastern Mojave Desert are compositionally more diverse and more K</span>2<span>O-rich than Cretaceous plutons. Late-kinematic intrusion of the Jurassic Goldhammer pluton, exposed in the Clipper Mountains, was along an active ductile thrust fault that put Proterozoic basement gneiss over Paleozoic strata by the time of intrusion. U-Pb geochronology and hornblende geobarometry are interpreted to indicate that the pluton was emplaced at 161 ± 10 Ma at a pressure approximately 0.46 GPa or more. This pressure corresponds to approximately a 17-km depth or more, at least 13 km greater than inferred stratigraphic overburden (2–4 km) at the time of intrusion. The excess we attribute to pre-intrusion tectonic burial from overthrusting of the observed allochthon of Proterozoic basement and (or) from earlier Mesozoic overthrusting. Ductile deformation continued along the observed thrust system during intrusion of the Goldhammer pluton. Fabrics in the pluton and country-rock record ductile shearing that was partly top westward but mostly top-eastward; the shearing began before or during the intrusion and continued during and after intrusion. The Jurassic burial history in the Clipper Mountains parallels that in adjacent ranges to the east, but contrasts with that in ranges to the south and west where exposed Paleozoic rocks were at colder and shallower crustal levels in Jurassic time. The tectonic record in the Clipper Mountains suggests large crustal thickening and topographic uplift that would be expected to leave a sedimentary record in Jurassic basins.</span></p>","language":"English","publisher":"Geological Society of America","doi":"10.1130/SPE299","usgsCitation":"Howard, K.A., McCaffrey, K., Wooden, J.L., Foster, D., and Shaw, S., 1995, Jurassic thrusting of Precambrian basement over Paleozoic cover in the Clipper Mountains, southeastern California: GSA Special Papers, v. 299, p. 375-392, https://doi.org/10.1130/SPE299.","productDescription":"18 p.","startPage":"375","endPage":"392","costCenters":[{"id":312,"text":"Geology, Minerals, Energy, and Geophysics Science Center","active":true,"usgs":true}],"links":[{"id":355877,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/thumbnails/outside_thumb.jpg"}],"volume":"299","noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"5b98e759e4b0702d0e84966c","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Howard, Keith A. 0000-0002-6462-2947 khoward@usgs.gov","orcid":"https://orcid.org/0000-0002-6462-2947","contributorId":3439,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Howard","given":"Keith","email":"khoward@usgs.gov","middleInitial":"A.","affiliations":[{"id":312,"text":"Geology, Minerals, Energy, and Geophysics Science Center","active":true,"usgs":true}],"preferred":true,"id":740675,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1},{"text":"McCaffrey, K.J.W.","contributorId":206483,"corporation":false,"usgs":false,"family":"McCaffrey","given":"K.J.W.","email":"","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":740676,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":2},{"text":"Wooden, J.
