Canopy characteristics were predicted from the canopy reflectance spectra by using measured and estimated data as inputs into a light-canopy interaction model within a optimization routine. Pertinent to average conditions typifying the area and time of the study, the light-canopy interaction model accomplished two goals. Using the model as a predictor, a sensitivity analysis suggested that little error in modelling the near nadir view canopy reflectance (R<sub>cv</sub>) would result from assuming an average soil reflectance of about 0.1, at leaf area index (LAI) values above 2, at near infrared (NIR) leaf reflectances higher than about 0.45. and at sun elevation angles &gt;40<sup>o</sup>. Moderate errors could result from assuming a spherical leaf angel distribution (LAD), and relatively high errors could result from errors in estimating visible leaf reflectances (and NIR leaf reflectances &lt;0.45) and percent skylight. Differences between canopy hemispherical reflectance (R<sub>c</sub>) and R<sub>cv</sub> were dominated by percent skylight variation, while differences between R<sub>c</sub> and R<sub>cv</sub> were moderate to slight at a sun elevation above 20<sup>o</sup> to 30<sup>o</sup>, a near spherical LAD, a soil reflectance near 0.1, a LAI up to 4, and a NIR leaf reflectance less than 0.7. </span></p><p><span>Simulated canopy reflectance spectra were close predictors of obtained spectra, with R<sup>2</sup> values &gt;0.97. Mean predicted LAI values were 2.6±0.86 (mean ±1 standard deviation) and were highly related to LAI values derived from field measurements. Seventy-eight percent of the modelled LAI variance was predicted by a normalized difference vegetation index transform of the field canopy spectra data. Predicted LAD values had a near spherical mean value, while the mean difference between input (estimated from laboratory measurements) and predicted leaf reflectances was nearly zero.</span></p>","largerWorkType":{"id":4,"text":"Book"},"largerWorkTitle":"Wetland and Environmental Applications of GIS","largerWorkSubtype":{"id":15,"text":"Monograph"},"language":"English","publisher":"CRC Press","isbn":"0873718976","usgsCitation":"Ramsey III, E., and Jensen, J.R., 1995, Modeling mangrove canopy reflectance using a light interaction model and an optimization technique, chap. 6 <i>of</i> Wetland and Environmental Applications of GIS, p. 61-81.","productDescription":"21 p.","startPage":"61","endPage":"81","costCenters":[{"id":455,"text":"National Wetlands Research Center","active":true,"usgs":true},{"id":17705,"text":"Wetland and Aquatic Research Center","active":true,"usgs":true}],"links":[{"id":367965,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/thumbnails/outside_thumb.jpg"}],"country":"United States","state":"Florida","geographicExtents":"{\n  \"type\": \"FeatureCollection\",\n  \"features\": [\n    {\n      \"type\": \"Feature\",\n      \"properties\": {},\n      \"geometry\": {\n        \"type\": \"Polygon\",\n        \"coordinates\": [\n          [\n            [\n              -88.9013671875,\n              24.44714958973082\n            ],\n            [\n              -79.1015625,\n              24.44714958973082\n            ],\n            [\n              -79.1015625,\n              31.50362930577303\n            ],\n            [\n              -88.9013671875,\n              31.50362930577303\n            ],\n            [\n              -88.9013671875,\n              24.44714958973082\n            ]\n          ]\n        ]\n      }\n    }\n  ]\n}","noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Ramsey III, Elijah 0000-0002-4518-5796","orcid":"https://orcid.org/0000-0002-4518-5796","contributorId":212009,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Ramsey III","given":"Elijah","affiliations":[{"id":17705,"text":"Wetland and Aquatic Research Center","active":true,"usgs":true}],"preferred":true,"id":772355,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1},{"text":"Jensen, John R.","contributorId":216821,"corporation":false,"usgs":false,"family":"Jensen","given":"John","email":"","middleInitial":"R.","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":772356,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":2}]}}

Wind and water movements associated with the hurricane resulted in the formation of compressed marsh, thick sediment deposits, wrack deposition, areas of salt burning, and scour. No sites were entirely without some impact. Sediments were deposited over large areas of coastal marsh. Marsh sites near Atchafalaya Bay had the thickest post-storm accumulations documented, up to 16 cm on average, while inland marsh sites accumulated lesser amounts of sediments. The nature of the sediment deposited on the marsh surface varied with location relative to the path of the storm and sources of sediment. Lateral compression resulted in surface relief 5-10 times greater than normal surface relief. Plant cover quickly recovered in all hurricane impact types except for scour areas and areas of thick wrack accumulation. Shifts in species dominance occurred in laterally compressed areas and are related to increased elevations. These findings suggest that hurricanes result in a variety of impacts in coastal Louisiana marshes and that the heterogeneity of the coastal landscape contributes to the magnitude and distribution of these impacts.</span></p>","language":"English","publisher":"Coastal Education and Research Foundation, Inc. These deposits include world-class copper porphyry and skarn deposits as well as a continuum of similar skarn, porphyry, vein, and replacement deposits that contain variable quantities of molybdenum, zinc, silver, lead, iron, gold, tungsten, tin, fluorine, and beryllium. Based on a new compilation, this paper reviews data on the full spectrum of intrusion-related deposits, concentrating on copper-rich systems, and attempts to place them in a generalized geological and petrological context. </p><p>In Mexico, intrusion-related mineral deposits are primarily Mesozoic to middle Tertiary in age. Three broad periods are prominent in the mineralization record: the late Mesozoic, the Laramide, and the middle Tertiary. Jurassic to Late Cretaceous calc-alkalic batholiths with sparse volcanic rocks occur along the Pacific margin mainly on eugeoclinal crust, although locally on continental crust (for example, in Sonora). Latest Cretaceous to Early Tertiary ('Laramide') calc-alkalic batholithic, subvolcanic, and volcanic centers occur in an overlapping but somewhat more easterly band that extends with diminished intensity and somewhat younger ages into the Sierra Madre Oriental. Mid-Tertiary volcanism and local intrusive centers are widely developed, with the greatest abundance of calcalkalic felsic volcanics in the Sierra Madre Occidental and more mafic middle to late Tertiary arc volcanics in the Sierra Madre del Sur in southern Mexico and as a fringe of alkalic volcanic' and sub volcanic centers in northeastern Mexico. </p><p>Over 600 copper-rich intrusion-related systems can be inferred from the literature; about 100 can be documented with some confidence. Copper-rich deposits occur with both intermediate (dioritic) and felsic (granodioritic) intrusive centers and show a corresponding variety of associated metals and alteration types. Styles include porphyry-type disseminated or stockwork mineralization, skarn, breccia pipes, and pegmatites. Multiple styles commonly occur in the same district. Porphyry copper deposits are best developed in association with the Laramide intrusive centers of northern Mexico and the mid-Tertiary intrusions in southern Mexico. Other intrusion-related deposit types occur within the same magmatic framework, but they have different temporal and spatial correlations related to their igneous composition and exposure level. </p><p>The continuum of intrusion-related mineralization in Mexico can be divided by geological associations, metal contents, and styles of alteration. Although more than 1,500 intrusion-associated mineral deposits are known, the scarcity of data requires a simplified approach focusing on major districts. We distinguish the following overlapping groups of deposits based on their metal contents and igneous compositions: (1) porphyry or skarn Cu(-Mo-Zn) associated with intermediate to felsic granitoids, (2) porphyry or skarn Cu (-Au-Fe) associated with intermediate intrusions, (3) greisen, skarn, or pegmatite W(-Mo) associated with intermediate to felsic granitoids, (4) replacement or skarn Zn-Pb-Ag(-Cu-F) deposits associated with felsic intrusions, (5) volcanic-hosted vein Ag-Au(-Zn-F-Sn) deposits associated with hypabyssal felsic intrusions, (6) vein ± replacement Ag-Au(-Cu-Zn-Pb) deposits associated with intermediate stocks, (7) volcanichosted Au-Ag(-Cu) systems, (8) rhyolite-related F(-Sn-Be) deposits, (9) diorite-related Fe(-Au-Cu) skarns, and (9) rhyolite-related Fe deposits. </p><p>Some inferences can be drawn from examination of these patterns: </p><p style=\"padding-left: 40px;\" data-mce-style=\"padding-left: 40px;\">• Igneous compositions vary in time and space in Mexico, but multiple compositions commonly were emplaced at different times in the same region. Temporal variations (as in Sonora) are as important as differences in province (as between Sonora and southern Mexico). </p><p style=\"padding-left: 40px;\" data-mce-style=\"padding-left: 40px;\">• Alteration and metal differences between alkaline and sub alkaline, felsic and mafic magma suites can be partly rationalized from equilibria among igneous minerals (for example, in terms of <i>a</i>Al<sub>2</sub>O<sub>3</sub> vs <i>a</i>CaO [vs <i>a</i>SiO<sub>2</sub> ]), fluid chloride and sulfur contents, and magmatic metal contents which reflect province and process. </p><p style=\"padding-left: 40px;\" data-mce-style=\"padding-left: 40px;\">• Exposure and preservation filter observed Mexican metallogeny. Erosion of the Mesozoic arc superstructure in the west leaves mainly tungsten-skarns, burial of the Laramide arc in central Mexico interrupts porphyry copper patterns, and minimal exhumation of mid-Tertiary intrusive centers preserves distal vein or replacement systems. </p><p style=\"padding-left: 40px;\" data-mce-style=\"padding-left: 40px;\">• The superimposed metallogenic patterns in Mexico have parallels with metallogenic patterns in the western United States in terms of the effects of preservation, process, and province. Future work should focus on increasing the basic geological data on mineral deposits and igneous rocks. Geochronology, petrology, and geochemistry would help better define the temporal, spatial, and compositional interrelationships between tectonism, magmatism, and The veins formed during multiple episodes of deformation and have structual and mineralogic features characteristic of mesothermal, low sulfide, gold-bearing quartz veins. Three early deformation episodes (D</span><sub>1</sub><span>, D</span><sub>2</sub><span>, D</span><sub>3</sub><span>) are interpreted as progressive phases of a major deformation event that culminated about 660 Ma; episode D</span><sub>4</sub><span>&nbsp;makes up part of a later event about 620 Ma. The bulk of the gold-bearing veins in the district are located in D</span><sub>2</sub><span>&nbsp;and D</span><sub>3</sub><span>&nbsp;structures. Three categories of environments are present that reflect the dominant long-term processes of erosion or nondeposition, deposition, and sediment reworking. (1) Environments of erosion or nondeposition comprise exposures of bedrock, glacial drift, coarse lag deposits, and possibly coastal plain rocks that contain sediments (where present) ranging from boulder fields to gravelly sands and occur in areas of relatively strong currents. (2) Environments of deposition contain fine-grained sediments ranging from muddy sands to muds that have accumulated in areas of predominantly weak bottom currents. (3) Environments of sediment reworking contain patches with textures ranging from sandy gravels to muds that have been produced by a combination of erosion and deposition in areas with variable bottom currents. </p><p>The distribution of sedimentary environments across the Boston Harbor-Massachusetts Bay area is extremely patchy. Locally, this patchiness is due either to modifications of bottom-current strength (caused by the irregular topography and differences in water depth) or to small-scale changes in the supply of fine-grained sediments. Regional patchiness, however, reflects differences in geologic and oceanographic conditions among the estuarine, inner shelf, and basinal parts of the sedimentary system. The estuarine part of the system (Boston Harbor) is a depositional trap for fine-grained sediments because it is protected from large waves, has generally weak and variable tidal currents, and receives a large supply of fine grained detritus from natural and anthropogenic sources. The inner shelf, on the other hand, is largely an area of erosion or nondeposition due to sediment removal and redistribution during past sea-level changes, to sediment resuspension and winnowing by modern waves and currents, and to an inadequate supply of fine-grained sediments. The basinal part of the system (Stellwagen Basin) is mainly a tranquil depositional environment in which fine-grained sediments from several potential sources settle through the water column and accumulate under weak bottom currents. </p><p>This study indicates areas within the Boston Harbor-Massachusetts Bay sedimentary system where fine-grained sediments and associated contaminants are likely to be either moved or deposited. It also provides a guide to the locations and variability of benthic habitats.</p>","language":"English","publisher":"Coastal Education & Research Foundation, Inc.","usgsCitation":"Knebel, H., and Circe, R., 1995, Seafloor environments within the Boston Harbor- Massachusetts Bay sedimentary system: A regional synthesis: Journal of Coastal Research, v. 11, no. 1, p. 230-251.","productDescription":"22 p.","startPage":"230","endPage":"251","costCenters":[{"id":678,"text":"Woods Hole Coastal and Marine Science Center","active":true,"usgs":true}],"links":[{"id":350845,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/thumbnails/outside_thumb.jpg"}],"country":"United States","otherGeospatial":"Massachusetts Bay","geographicExtents":"{\n  \"type\": \"FeatureCollection\",\n  \"features\": [\n    {\n      \"type\": \"Feature\",\n      \"properties\": {},\n      \"geometry\": {\n        \"type\": \"Polygon\",\n        \"coordinates\": [\n          [\n            [\n              -71.54296874999999,\n              41.261291493919884\n            ],\n            [\n              -64.8193359375,\n              41.261291493919884\n            ],\n            [\n              -64.8193359375,\n              45.767522962149876\n            ],\n            [\n              -71.54296874999999,\n              45.767522962149876\n            ],\n            [\n              -71.54296874999999,\n              41.261291493919884\n            ]\n          ]\n        ]\n      }\n    }\n  ]\n}","volume":"11","issue":"1","noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"5a72e3e9e4b0a9a2e9e08eda","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Knebel, H.J.","contributorId":79092,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Knebel","given":"H.J.","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":726258,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1},{"text":"Circe, R.C.","contributorId":90300,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Circe","given":"R.C.","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":726259,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":2}]}}

Metamorphic grade appears to increase downward but with marked discontinuities between each of the nappes, suggesting that section has been removed along the bounding faults. This apparent omission of section is greatest in the lowest oceanic unit where a serpentinite melange containing blocks and slabs of eclogite, metamorphosed at 12–19 kbar, lies on the UHPM rocks. We suggest that this serpentinite melange represents a highly attenuated upper mantle section that structurally overlay the UHP rocks during subduction. Similar serpentinite melanges are known from other high-pressure (HP) and UHPM areas and may have a similar origin.</span></p>","largerWorkType":{"id":4,"text":"Book"},"largerWorkTitle":"Ultrahigh Pressure Metamorphism","language":"English","publisher":"Cambridge University Press","doi":"10.1017/CBO9780511573088.007","usgsCitation":"Blake, M.C., Moore, D., and Jayko, A.S., 1995, The role of serpentinite melanges in the unroofing of UHPM rocks: An example from the Western Alps of Italy: Chapter 6, chap. <i>of</i> Ultrahigh Pressure Metamorphism, p. 182-205, https://doi.org/10.1017/CBO9780511573088.007.","productDescription":"24 p.","startPage":"182","endPage":"205","costCenters":[{"id":312,"text":"Geology, Minerals, Energy, and Geophysics Science Center","active":true,"usgs":true}],"links":[{"id":355139,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/thumbnails/outside_thumb.jpg"}],"noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"5c110e12e4b034bf6a810d62","contributors":{"editors":[{"text":"Coleman, Robert G.","contributorId":88022,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Coleman","given":"Robert","email":"","middleInitial":"G.","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":738262,"contributorType":{"id":2,"text":"Editors"},"rank":1}],"authors":[{"text":"Blake, M. Concentrations (μg/g) of six metals in invertebrates were determined: Al (range = 591–4193), As (2.7–34.1), Cd (0.13–8.38), Cu (26–1382), Pb (0.54–67.1), and Zn (212–1665). Concentrations of As, Cd, Cu, Pb, and total metals were significantly correlated with at least one benthic metric. Copper (r = 0.88–0.94) and total metals (r = 0.90–0.97) provided the most highly significant correlations. Based on longitudinal site comparisons of metals in invertebrates, benthic community structure, and differences between proportionally scaled ranks, five benthic metrics provided the best indicators of relative impact: taxa richness, Ephemeroptera-Plecoptera-Trichoptera (EPT) richness, chironomid richness, percentage of the most dominant taxon, and density. The two sites with the highest accumulations of invertebrate metals also demonstrated the greatest relative degree of impact based on these parameters. The most meaningful combinations of metrics indicate that the benthic community at the most upstream site is being severely impacted by metals. Two sites demonstrated little or no negative impact, and three sites demonstrated low or moderate levels of negative impacts, which may be due to a combination of metals and other factors such as organic enrichment. We recommend that benthic community structure and metals in invertebrates collected from riffle habitats be used to determine relative impacts in metals-contaminated river systems, owing to their close relation to metal availability and transfer to higher trophic levels.</span></p>","language":"English","publisher":"Taylor & Francis","doi":"10.1080/02705060.1995.9663447","usgsCitation":"Taylor The structures formed during Miocene rise and cooling from ductile, upper amphibolite facies and anatectic conditions to brittle near‐surface conditions beneath the Naxos detachment fault. Top‐to‐the‐north ductile fabrics in the footwall, which initially developed during amphibolite facies prograde metamorphism, were overprinted by a succession of north directed, normal sense lower‐temperature brittle structures as the footwall was tectonically unloaded and unroofed. Pseudotachylite and cataclasite formation, brittle faulting, alteration, and erosion of the footwall occurred during continued slip and tectonic denudation. Neogene conglomerate and megabreccia, in part derived from exhumation of this footwall, lie structurally above the peripheral Naxos fault. Published K‐Ar and&nbsp;</span><sup>40</sup><span>Ar/</span><sup>39</sup><span>Ar ages for hornblende, white mica, and biotite in the footwall decrease northwestward; apparent ages 17–50 Ma in the southeast correspond to areas of low metamorphic grade where preextension argon was partially retained. Published ages 16–10 Ma in higher‐grade rocks of the domal core in the north are cooling ages that for each of the three minerals show a component of younging in the NNE direction of extension. Assuming this is the direction of unroofing, we interpret the rate of this younging as the fault slip rate as the footwall rocks moved &gt;20 km SSW relative to their hanging wall along the base of the Naxos detachment fault. The calculated rates of slip average 5–8 mm/yr, comparable to maximum rates reported in the Basin and Range province.</span></p>","language":"English","publisher":"American Geophysical Union","doi":"10.1029/95JB00665","usgsCitation":"John, B., and Howard, K.A., 1995, Rapid extension recorded by cooling‐age patterns and brittle deformation, Naxos, Greece: Journal of Geophysical Research B: Solid Earth, v. 100, p. 9969-9979, https://doi.org/10.1029/95JB00665.","productDescription":"11 p.","startPage":"9969","endPage":"9979","costCenters":[{"id":312,"text":"Geology, Minerals, Energy, and Geophysics Science Center","active":true,"usgs":true}],"links":[{"id":355876,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/thumbnails/outside_thumb.jpg"}],"country":"Greece","otherGeospatial":"Naxos","geographicExtents":"{\n  \"type\": \"FeatureCollection\",\n  \"features\": [\n    {\n      \"type\": \"Feature\",\n      \"properties\": {},\n      \"geometry\": {\n        \"type\": \"Polygon\",\n        \"coordinates\": [\n          [\n            [\n              25.213623046875,\n              36.87962060502676\n            ],\n            [\n              25.74920654296875,\n              36.87962060502676\n            ],\n            [\n              25.74920654296875,\n              37.276238364942955\n            ],\n            [\n              25.213623046875,\n              37.276238364942955\n            ],\n            [\n              25.213623046875,\n              36.87962060502676\n            ]\n          ]\n        ]\n      }\n    }\n  ]\n}","volume":"100","noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationDate":"2012-09-20","publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"5c110e12e4b034bf6a810d5d","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"John, B.E.","contributorId":190690,"corporation":false,"usgs":false,"family":"John","given":"B.E.","email":"","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":740672,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1},{"text":"Howard, Keith A. 0000-0002-6462-2947 khoward@usgs.gov","orcid":"https://orcid.org/0000-0002-6462-2947","contributorId":3439,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Howard","given":"Keith","email":"khoward@usgs.gov","middleInitial":"A.","affiliations":[{"id":312,"text":"Geology, Minerals, Energy, and Geophysics Science Center","active":true,"usgs":true}],"preferred":true,"id":740673,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":2}]}}
