The bedrock was mapped and samples collected during the summers of 1969, 1970, and 1971 as part of a continuing U.S. Geological Survey project to map basement rocks in the western Chugach Mountains.
\nMost of the early work on the bedrock geology of the Anchorage A-6 quadrangle was done by Capps (1916 and 1940), who studied the geology of the Turnagain-Knik region, and by Park (1933), who studied the Girdwood gold mining district, most of which is in the Anchorage A-6 quadrangle. Recent studies of bedrock in the quadrangle and nearby areas are described in papers by Clark and Bartsch (1971a, b) and Clark (in press, a, b).

The two main units in this belt are the Jurassic (?) and Cretaceous Valdez (?) Group composed of flysch deposits and the McHugh Complex composed of oceanic metavolcanic sequences tectonically mixed with metaclastic rocks derived from a continental magmatic arc. Deformation of the McHugh Complex is characterized by pervasive, closely spaced shear fractures and is melange-like in some areas. Deformation of the Valdez (?) Group is characterized by tight folding that was initiated before the sediments were completely lithified. The folds have steeply dipping axial surfaces that are overturned to the northwest in some areas and to the southeast in other areas. The Jurassic and(or) Cretaceous McHugh Complex is separated from the Valdez (?) Group by the Eagle River thrust fault. The Valdez (?) Group was probably deposited primarily on oceanic crust that was collapsed against the continental margin in latest Cretaceous to early Tertiary time.
An accurate belt of upper Paleozoic to lower Mesozoic rocks to the north and west had been deformed, accreted to the continental margin, and intruded by plutons prior to the deposition of the Jurassic (?) and Cretaceous sediments. Rocks of the continental terrane that underlie the Wrangell and Talkeetna Mountains and the Alaska Range are locally exposed in the map area north and west of the Knik fault zone. Near the village of Eklutna, the junction between the two terranes is marked by an ophiolitic assemblage.

In addition, linears of regional extent that may be structurally controlled can be seen, many of which have not yet been recognized in surface mapping. The synoptic view provided by the image brings into focus an orthogonal set of fractures trending north-northeast and east-southeast and not heretofore apparent in regional maps of Alaska. This orthogonal fracture set may reflect a conjugate set of fractures within the crust, which has exerted significant control over the geologic history of the state. Increased resolution in other images from space platforms, such as the resolution of 200 to 650 feet (60 to 200 m) planned for the satellite television cameras of the ERTS program, will permit the discernment of finer detail and a greater accuracy in identifying and locating geologic features.

Meanwhile, there are indications that the earlier estimates of around ten thousand million barrels should be raised—perhaps to about five times as much. There has moreover been a great increate also in the known and probable gas reserves in northern Canada—particularly in the Arctic Archipelago. In spite of planned automation, people will be needed for development—including Eskimos and Indians, whose interests will be widely protected under the Alaska Native Claims Settlement Act of December 1971. The International Biological Programme ‘Tundra Biome’ projects have accumulated much new information, including the results to be expected from disturbing the tundra seriously, and means of preventing or repairing damage to it. There is much interest in Alaska and Canada in protection of the northern environment, and in the former the US National Environmental Policy Act is already leading to stricter control of some developments.

This paper describes the limnology and fish ecology of two such lakes in British Columbia, five in Alaska, and one in Kamchatka. Then we discuss the following general topics: the biogenic eutrophication of nursery lakes from the nutrients released from salmon carcasses wherein during years of highest numbers of spawners, lake phosphate balances in Lakes Babine, Iliamna, and Dalnee are significantly affected; the use of nursery lakes by young sockeye that reveals five patterns related to size and configuration of lake basins and the distribution of spawning areas; the interactions between various life history stages of sockeye salmon and such resident predators, competitors, and prey as Arctic char, lake trout, Dolly Varden, cutthroat trout, lake whitefish, pygmy whitefish, pond smelt, sticklebacks, and sculpins; the self-regulation of sockeye salmon abundance in these nursery lakes as controlled by density-dependent processes; the interrelations between young sockeye salmon biomass and growth rates, and zooplankton abundance in Babine Lake; and finally, the diel, vertical, pelagial migratory behavior of young sockeye in Babine Lake and the new hypothesis dealing with bioenergetic conservation.

Packer seats were poor in part of the hole because of unstable wall conditions. Thus, some zones had to be tested several times. The static water levels in the intervals tested ranged from about 23 meters (71 feet) below land surface in the upper interval to an estimated 90 meters (295 feet) below land surface in the lower intervals, indicating a decreasing head with depth. The specific capacity of the hole from 85. 0 to 2,133. 6 meters (279 to 7,000 feet) was 1.94 cubic meters per day per meter (0. 11 gallon per minute per foot) of drawdown after the hole had been jetted at an average rate of 327 cubic meters per day (60 gallons per minute) for about 23 hours . Transmissivity computed from the recovery of water level after jetting stopped was 0.60 cubic meter per day per meter (48.3 gallons per day per foot). The relative specific capacities of isolated intervals ranged from 0.004 cubic meter per day per meter (less than 0.001 gallon per minute per foot) of drawdown to 0.430 cubic meter per day per meter (0.024 gallon per minute per foot) of drawdown.

Chemical composition and temperature of inflow water indicated the contributing zones to have a mean depth of 1,670 meters {5,478 feet) and 1,726.7 meters (5,665 feet), respectively. An unrestricted inflow rate based on this data was calculated to be 380 cubic meters per day (70 gallons per minute) which compared well with the measured restricted-inflow rate of 164 cubic meters per day (30 gallons per minute) for hole UA-1 at the end of November 1970.

We studied the ceca of normal adult rats by light and electron microscopy to determine whether any specific bacterial population localizes in this area. All rats studied showed that the crypt was packed with organisms whose morphological character differs from those of the cecal lumen. Organisms localized in the crypt were often identified topographically close to the microvilli of the epithelial cells. These organisms could be differentiated into three types according to their characteristic ultrastructure. Type 1 was a thin spiral-shaped microbe that resembled a Borrelia. Type 2 possessed helically coiled fibers and flagella-like appendages. Type 3 was spiral-shaped but lacked axial fibers. Types 1 and 2 were both capable of penetrating through the crypt epithelium into the lamina propria where they were found in either phagocytes or extracellular locations. These observations are discussed in relation to other host-microflora localization patterns.
A hydrologic reconnaissance was made of Anaktuvuk pass in the central Brooks Range during the summer of 1971 to help develop a water supply for the village school. Winter icings and summer flow conditions in Contact Creek both indicate that ground water is present beneath the creek bed. A well-site area was selected in the channel of Contact Creek near the school where the prospects of obtaining a suitable ground-water supply seem best. In the event that wells are unsuccessful, water can be hauled from Eleanor Lake to the school. Chemical quality of water at Anaktuvuk Pass is excellent, but any source of water may be subject to bacterial contamination and would require treatment.
