In addition, linears of regional extent that may be structurally controlled can be seen, many of which have not yet been recognized in surface mapping. The synoptic view provided by the image brings into focus an orthogonal set of fractures trending north-northeast and east-southeast and not heretofore apparent in regional maps of Alaska. This orthogonal fracture set may reflect a conjugate set of fractures within the crust, which has exerted significant control over the geologic history of the state. Increased resolution in other images from space platforms, such as the resolution of 200 to 650 feet (60 to 200 m) planned for the satellite television cameras of the ERTS program, will permit the discernment of finer detail and a greater accuracy in identifying and locating geologic features.</span></p>","language":"English","publisher":"American Association for the Advancement of Winter icings and summer flow conditions in Contact Creek both indicate that ground water is present beneath the creek bed. A well-site area was selected in the channel of Contact Creek near the school where the prospects of obtaining a suitable ground-water supply seem best. In the event that wells are unsuccessful, water can be hauled from Eleanor Lake to the school. Chemical composition and temperature of inflow water indicated the contributing zones to have a mean depth of 1,670 meters {5,478 feet) and 1,726.7 meters (5,665 feet), respectively. Packer seats were poor in part of the hole because of unstable wall conditions. Thus, some zones had to be tested several times. The static water levels in the intervals tested ranged from about 23 meters (71 feet) below land surface in the upper interval to an estimated 90 meters (295 feet) below land surface in the lower intervals, indicating a decreasing head with depth. The specific capacity of the hole from 85. 0 to 2,133. 6 meters (279 to 7,000 feet) was 1.94 cubic meters per day per meter (0. 11 gallon per minute per foot) of drawdown after the hole had been jetted at an average rate of 327 cubic meters per day (60 gallons per minute) for about 23 hours . Transmissivity computed from the recovery of water level after jetting stopped was 0.60 cubic meter per day per meter (48.3 gallons per day per foot). We studied the ceca of normal adult rats by light and electron microscopy to determine whether any specific bacterial population localizes in this area. All rats studied showed that the crypt was packed with organisms whose morphological character differs from those of the cecal lumen. Organisms localized in the crypt were often identified topographically close to the microvilli of the epithelial cells. These organisms could be differentiated into three types according to their characteristic ultrastructure. Type 1 was a thin spiral-shaped microbe that resembled a <i>Borrelia.</i> Type 2 possessed helically coiled fibers and flagella-like appendages. Type 3 was spiral-shaped but lacked axial fibers. Types 1 and 2 were both capable of penetrating through the crypt epithelium into the lamina propria where they were found in either phagocytes or extracellular locations. Many lode prospects contain small amounts of copper in silicified limestone within and near the base of thrust plates of carbonate rocks. Other lodes consist of well-defined veins containing gold and base-metal sulfide minerals, but none has been commercially productive.</p><p>Mapped rock units include the \"York Slate,\" of Precambrian age, which consists of a highly deformed and thick sequence of graphitic calcareous siltite, which contains thin limestone beds and intercalated(?) volcaniclastic rocks, and Paleozoic carbonate rocks, which have been converted largely to marble and schistose marble. Along and near the Kigluaik Mountains in the north part of the quadrangle, quartzo-feldspathic gneisses of Precambrian age are intruded by fine-grained granite. Meanwhile, there are indications that the earlier estimates of around ten thousand million barrels should be raised—perhaps to about five times as much. There has moreover been a great increate also in the known and probable gas reserves in northern Canada—particularly in the Arctic Archipelago. In spite of planned automation, people will be needed for development—including Eskimos and Indians, whose interests will be widely protected under the Alaska Native Claims Settlement Act of December 1971. The International Biological Programme ‘Tundra Biome’ projects have accumulated much new information, including the results to be expected from disturbing the tundra seriously, and means of preventing or repairing damage to it. This paper describes the limnology and fish ecology of two such lakes in British Columbia, five in Alaska, and one in Kamchatka. Two attempts to measure the free-air gradient utilizing the headframe over the drill hole were unsuccessful owing to mechanical vibrations in the structure. Because of the uncertainty in the measured free-air gradients these values were discarded and the average value (0.09406 mgal/ft) was used in the calculations. The calculated in situ bulk density is 2.36 g/cc. The weighted average bulk density determined from 47 core samples taken in the adjacent UAE-1 drill hole is also 2.36 g/cc. These features have not been disturbed by tectonic activity for the past 17,000 years. The islands of the Delarof Islands group, located east of Amchitka Pass, have inactive sea cliffs and emergent low terraces that indicate relatively recent uplift, possibly as much as 4 m. It is essentially a vast tract of Cretaceous rocks locally veneered by Quaternary alluviated beds and volcanic rocks. The Cretaceous section contains a large volume of volcanic rocks, and most of the sedimentary sequence consists of first- and second-cycle volcanic debris. Above basal andesitic rocks is a 10,000-ft (3,048 m) section of graywacke and mudstone of Albian age, overlain by 10,000 ft or more of shallow-marine and nonmarine paralic sandstone, shale, conglomerate, and coal--dated as late Early and early Late Cretaceous. The expected contrast in emissivities between ice and water was observed at all wavelengths. Distributions of sea ice and open water were mapped from altitudes up to 11 km in the presence of dense cloud cover.</p><p>Different forms of ice also exhibited strong contrasts in emissivity. Emissivity differences of up to 0.2 were observed between two types of ice at the 0.811-cm wavelength.
