The fauna is dominated by&nbsp;</span><i>Epistominella exigua, Cassidulina reniforme, Eponides tumidulus, Cibicides scaldisiensis, Lagena spp., Cassidulina teretis, Eponides weddellensis, Bolivina arctica</i><span>, and&nbsp;</span><i>Patellina corrugata</i><span>. The presence of&nbsp;</span><i>Cibicides scaldisiensis</i><span>&nbsp;in the assemblage and the occurrence of&nbsp;</span><i>Cibicides grossus</i><span>&nbsp;higher in the core are indicative of an early Pliocene age. The morphologically distinctive species&nbsp;</span><i>Cibicidoides</i><span>&nbsp;sp. 795 of McNeil (in press) which occurs in the NWR core sample was previously known only from Oligocene through Miocene deposits in the Beaufort-Mackenzie Basin of Arctic Canada.&nbsp;</span><i>Ehrenbergina</i><span>&nbsp;sp. A and&nbsp;</span><i>Cibicidoides aff. C</i><span>. sp. 795, also present in the core, are new and endemic to the Arctic late Miocene and early Pliocene. These species, and possibly others, are survivors of the late Miocene (Messinian) sea-level crisis, which caused a significant faunal turnover in the Arctic Ocean. The predominantly calcareous assemblage indicates deposition above the calcium carbonate compensation depth in an upper bathyal environment. Paleogeographic affinities for the bulk of the assemblage indicate probable connections between the Arctic and the North Atlantic Oceans, but the endemic species identify environmental differences or partial isolation of the western Arctic Ocean. The pesticides detected comprise less than 2 percent of the amount applied and usually are at concentrations far less than established drinking water standards. Most of the detected pesticides seem to come from sources near the headwaters in the southern part of the basin. Although low, concentrations are related to pesticide application and runoff. To determine whether viable seeds of&nbsp;</span><i>V</i><span>.&nbsp;</span><i>americana</i><span>&nbsp;occurred in the seed bank of navigation pool 7, Lake Onalaska, the upper 5 cm of sediment was collected from 103 sites in May 1990. These sediment samples were kept in pots at a depth of 0.4, 0.8, and 1.2 m in an outdoor pond for 12 weeks.&nbsp;</span><i>Vallisneria americana</i><span>&nbsp;seeds germinated from sites throughout the lake, and some seedlings produced overwintering buds by the end of the study. Seeds, spores, or fragments of 12 other species of aquatic plants also germinated. Seed germination trials with fresh and stored seeds in both greenhouse and ponds in which light availability was reduced with shade cloths indicated that seed germination was insensitive to light level. To determine the light requirements for seedling survival and bud production, sediment from Lake Onalaska was incubated in ponds under neutral density shade screens reducing light to 2, 5, 9, and 25% of full sun. Declines exceeded 10 feet in about 50 percent of the area, 20 feet in about 10 percent of the area, and 30 feet in about 5 percent of the area. The largest declines were south of the Boise River between the Ridenbaugh and New York Canals. These declines may be caused in part by the decrease in discharge through irrigation canals during the drought of 1987-92. Small water-level rises were mapped in about 10 percent of the area--in the southeastern part of the Boise area and along the Boise River. This comparative study is the first step in reassessing shallow ground-water conditions in the Boise area in more than 20 years. Hydrologic and water- quality conditions can vary greatly in the basin, resulting in potential economic damage. This report describes the seasonal and spatial variations in surface-water quality in the chain of lakes and its tributaries. &nbsp;</p>\n<p>Long-term trends in dissolved-solids and nutrient concentrations and instantaneous loads in tributaries upstream and downstream of the chain of lakes are not apparent. However,seasonal variations are apparent. Dissolved-solids concentrations were smaller, and nutrient concentrations were larger, during the spring than during the remainder of the year. Variations in dissolved-solids concentrations are caused by dilution and evaporation. Variations in nutrient concentrations are the result of biologic activity. Instantaneous dissolved-solids and nutrient loads were greater during the spring than during the remainder of the year because of seasonal differences in flow rates. &nbsp;</p>\n<p>Only minimal long-term trends and seasonal variations in dissolved-solids and nutrient concentrations in the chain of lakes are apparent. During the period of record, dissolved-solids concentrations in Sweetwater Lake generally increased, dissolved-solids concentrations in Lake Alice and Lake Irvine varied seasonally, and dissolved phosphorus concentrations in Lake Alice generally increased. &nbsp;</p>\n<p>Spatial variations in dissolved-solids and nutrient concentrations in the basin are apparent.\" &nbsp;The medians and ranges of dissolved-solids concentrations for the upstream stations were smaller than those for the lake stations and the downstream stations. The five streamflow-gaging stations are located at Zanesfield, near Urbana, at St. Paris Pike (at Eagle City), near Springfield, and near Dayton. \r\n\r\nThe median of the annual-mean base flows, determined by means of hydrograph separation, ranged from 0.64 (ft3/s)/mi2 (cubic feet per second per square mile) at Zanesfield to 0.74 (ft3/s)/mi2 at St. Paris Pike. The median percentage of annual total streamflow attributed to base flow ranged from 61.8 percent at Zanesfield to 76.1 percent near Urbana.\r\n\r\nEstimates of an upper limit (or threshold) at which base flows can be considered to be composed predominately of sustained ground-water discharge were made by constructing and analyzing base- flow-duration curves. The sustained ground-water discharges (base flows less than or equal to the estimated sustained ground-water-discharge thresholds) are assumed to originate from ground-water- flow systems that are minimally affected by seasonal climatic changes. The median sustained ground- water discharge ranged from 0.11 (ft3/s)/mi2 at Zanesfield to 0.26 (ft3/s)/mi2 at St. Paris Pike (at Eagle City) and near Springfield. The constituents of primary concern were selenium, arsenic, and salinity; uranium, boron, and molybdenum also were evaluated. Samples from 117 shallow wells were analyzed, and the results for samples from 110 of the wells were interpreted in relation to surficial geology, sediment depositional environment, soil characteristics, and hydrologic processes to determine the geochemical and hydrologic factors affecting the distribution of these constituents in ground water. </p><p>In general, shallow ground water in areas where concentrations of salinity and most trace elements are elevated is influenced primarily by sediments derived from marine sedimentary rocks originating in the Coast Range, San Emigdio Mountains, and Tehachapi Mountains, and probably by unusual exposures of similar marine formations in the Sierra Nevada. Ground water in areas where concentrations of salinity and trace elements are significantly lower generally is influenced by igneous and metamorphic rocks exposed in the Sierra Nevada. </p><p>In addition to sources of sediments, evaporation of shallow ground water, as&nbsp;indicated by isotopic enrichment of oxygen-18 and deuterium, increases salinity and concentrations of conservative trace elements such as selenium (under oxidizing conditions) and boron. Redox conditions affect the oxidation state of all trace elements of concern, except boron, and were found to be a major influence on trace-element solubility. Under oxidized conditions, selenate predominates and behaves conservatively, and arsenate predominates and is affected by sorption reactions that can limit arsenic solubility. Under reduced conditions, selenium is reduced to insoluble elemental selenium and arsenite predominates and generally is more soluble than arsenate.&nbsp;</p><p>Elevated concentrations of uranium in shallow ground water probably are associated with uranium deposits in Kern County and other parts of the basin where oxidized conditions cause the more soluble uranyl species to predominate. Boron was correlated with salinity and behaved conservatively, whereas adsorption and precipitation of molybdenum minerals probably limited molybdenum solubility. </p><p>Interrelations among constituents were examined with principal component analysis. The first two principal components explained 50.7 percent of the variance in the data. The physical characteristics are the drainage area of the subbasin, the percentage area of the subbasin covered only by lakes, the percentage area of the subbasin covered by both lakes and wetlands, the main-channel length, and the main-channel slope.
