Geophysical estimates of the moment magnitudes (Mw) of the largest such earthquakes range from 8 (ref. 3).to 91/2 (ref. 4). Radiocarbon dating of earthquake-killed vegetation can set upper bounds on earthquake size by constraining the length of plate boundary that ruptured in individual earthquakes. Such dating has shown that the most recent rupture, or series of ruptures, extended at least 55 km along the Washington coast within a period of a few decades about 300 years ago5. Here we report 85 new 14C ages, which suggest that this most recent rupture (or series) extended at least 900 km between southern British Columbia and northern California. Rocks of Precambrian through Quaternary age are present in \r\nCibola County. Most rocks are sedimentary in origin except for \r\nPrecambrian igneous and metamorphic rocks exposed in the Zuni Uplift \r\nand Tertiary and Quaternary basalts in northern and central parts of the \r\ncounty. The most productive aquifers in the county include (youngest \r\nto oldest) Quaternary deposits, sandstones in the Mesaverde Group, the \r\nDakota-Zuni-Bluff aquifer, the Westwater Canyon aquifer, the Todilto-\r\nEntrada aquifer, sandstone beds in the Chinle Formation, and the San \r\nAndres-Glorieta aquifer.\r\n\r\n     Unconsolidated sand, silt, and gravel form a mantle ranging from \r\na few inches to 150 to 200 feet over much of the bedrock in Cibola County.  \r\nWell yields range from 5 to 1,110 gallons per minute. Dissolved-solids \r\nconcentrations of ground water range from 200 to more than 5,200 \r\nmilligrams per liter. Calcium, magnesium, bicarbonate, and sulfate are \r\nthe predominant ions in ground water in alluvial material.\r\n\r\n     The Mesaverde Group mainly occurs in three areas of the county.  \r\nWell yields range from less than 1 to 12 gallons per minute. The \r\npredominant ions in water from wells in the Mesaverde Group are calcium, \r\nsodium, and bicarbonate. The transition from calcium-predominant to \r\nsodium-predominant water in the southwestern part of the county likely \r\nis a result of ion exchange.\r\n\r\n     Wells completed in the Dakota-Zuni-Bluff aquifer yield from 1 to 30 \r\ngallons per minute. Dissolved-solids concentrations range from 220 to \r\n2,000 milligrams per liter in water from 34 wells in the western part of \r\nthe county. Predominant ions in the ground water include calcium, sodium, \r\nsulfate, and bicarbonate. Calcium predominates in areas where the aquifer \r\nis exposed at the surface or is overlain with alluvium.\r\n\r\n     Sandstones in the Chinle Formation yield from 10 to 300 gallons per \r\nminute to wells in the Grants-Bluewater area. In the western part of \r\nthe county, sodium and bicarbonate predominate in water from the Chinle \r\nFormation. In the eastern part of the county, water quality is more \r\nvariable than elsewhere and the predominant constituents include \r\ncalcium, sodium, sulfate, and chloride.\r\n\r\n     Well yields from the San Andres-Glorieta aquifer in the Grants-\r\nBluewater area are as much as 2,830 gallons per minute, whereas the \r\nmaximum recorded pumping rate from the aquifer in other areas of the \r\ncounty is 88 gallons per minute. Dissolved-solids concentrations of \r\nground-water range from about 130 to 4,200 milligrams per liter, and the \r\nwater generally is a calcium bicarbonate sulfate type.","language":"ENGLISH","publisher":"U.S. Geological Survey ;\r\nCan be purchased from U.S.G.S. A compilation of existing data shows that pesticides have been detected in the atmosphere throughout the nation. Most of the available information on pesticides in the atmosphere is from small-scale, short-term studies that seldom lasted more than one year. Only two national-scale, multi-year studies were done since the late 1960's that analyzed for a wide variety of pesticides in air that were in current use at the time. Another large-scale study was done during 1990-91, but was limited to the midwestern and northeastern United States and only analyzed for two classes of herbicides in wet deposition. Most of the pesticides analyzed for were detected in either air or rain, and represent about 25 percent of the total number of insecticides, herbicides, and fungicides in current use. The geographical distribution of studies, and the type of sampling and analysis were highly variable with most of the historical study efforts concentrated in the Great Lakes area and California. Air and rain were the main atmospheric matrices sampled, but pesticides were also detected in fog and snow. Reported pesticide concentrations in air and rain were frequently positively correlated to their regional agricultural use. Deviations from this relation could usually be explained by non-agricultural use of pesticides, sampling and analytical difficulties, and environmental persistence. High concentrations of locally used pesticides were found to occur seasonally, usually in conjunction with spring planting of row crops and warm temperatures, but high concentrations also occurred during winter months in those areas where dormant orchards were sprayed. The environmentally more persistent pesticides were detected in the atmosphere at low concen- trations throughout the year. Deposition of airborne pesticides can have significant effects on water quality, but neither the nature of nor the magnitude of these effects can be determined with certainty on the basis of the type of data currently available. The lack of consistent, long-term regional and national monitoring and study of pesticides in atmospheric matrices severely limits assessment capability.","language":"ENGLISH","publisher":"U.S. Geological Survey ;Earth Science Information Center, Open-File Reports Section [distributor],","doi":"10.3133/ofr94506","usgsCitation":"Majewski, M.S., and Capel, P.D., 1995, Pesticides in the atmosphere; distribution, trends, and governing factors: U.S. Geological Survey Open-File Report 94-506, xiii, 191 p. :ill., maps ;28 cm., https://doi.org/10.3133/ofr94506.","productDescription":"xiii, 191 p. :ill., maps ;28 cm.","costCenters":[],"links":[{"id":152407,"rank":0,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1994/0506/report-thumb.jpg"},{"id":272568,"type":{"id":11,"text":"Document"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1994/0506/report.pdf"}],"noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e4afee4b07f02db697904","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Majewski, Michael S. majewski@usgs.gov","contributorId":440,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Majewski","given":"Michael","email":"majewski@usgs.gov","middleInitial":"S.","affiliations":[{"id":154,"text":"California Water Science Center","active":true,"usgs":true}],"preferred":true,"id":181770,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1},{"text":"Capel, Paul D. 0000-0003-1620-5185 capel@usgs.gov","orcid":"https://orcid.org/0000-0003-1620-5185","contributorId":1002,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Capel","given":"Paul","email":"capel@usgs.gov","middleInitial":"D.","affiliations":[{"id":392,"text":"Minnesota Water Science Center","active":true,"usgs":true},{"id":451,"text":"National Water Quality Assessment Program","active":true,"usgs":true},{"id":37778,"text":"WMA - Integrated Modeling and Prediction Division","active":true,"usgs":true}],"preferred":true,"id":181771,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":2}]}}

Dixie Valley receives surface-water and ground-water flow from Stingaree, Cowkick, Eastgate, Pleasant, and Jersey Valleys and subsurface flow from Fairview Valley, which is a topographically closed basin.  The relation between precipitation and altitude was re-evaluated for the Dixie Valley area using new data, and empirical estimates of recharge were revised accordingly. The revised estimate of total recharge is 23,000 acre-feet per  Re-evaluation of ground-water discharge focused on Dixie Valley as the largest basin in the study area. Phreatophytic vegetation was mapped and partitioned into nine zones on the basis of species composition and foliage density. For woody phreatophytes, annual evapotranspiration rates of 0.7 cubic feet of water per cubic foot of foliage for greasewood and 1.1 cubic feet of water per cubic foot of foliage for rabbitbrush were adapted from lysimeter studies near Winnemucca, Nevada. These rates were multiplied by the foliage density of the respective phreatophytes in each zone to estimate a specific rate for that zone. Rates for salt-grass (0.5 to 0.8 foot per year) and the playa surface (0.1 to 0.3 foot per year) were based on a range of rates. used in other recent studies in western and central Nevada. These rates were multiplied by the areas of the zones to produce estimates of the annual volume of ground water discharged. The discharge estimated for Dixie Valley is between 17,000 and 28,000 acre-feet per year. The revised discharge estimate for the entire Dixie Valley area is between 20,000 and 31,000 acre-feet per year.  The revised ground-water budget for the entire Dixie Valley study area has a total recharge of about 23,000 acre-feet per year. This is within the range of estimates of natural discharge--from 20,000 to 31,000 acre-feet per year. For Dixie Valley alone, the total recharge of about 8,900 acre-feet per year and the estimated subsurface inflow from tributary areas of about 11,000 acre-feet per year produce an estimated total inflow of about 20,000 acre-feet per year. This compares with the discharge estimate of 17,000 to 28,000 acre-feet per year.","language":"ENGLISH","publisher":"U.S. Geological Survey ;\r\nU.S. Geological Survey, Information Services [distributor],","doi":"10.3133/wri954052","usgsCitation":"Harrill, J., and Hines, L., 1995, Estimated natural ground-water recharge, discharge, and budget for the Dixie Valley area, west-central Nevada: U.S. Geological Survey Water-Resources Investigations Report 95-4052, iv, 12 p. :ill., col. map ;28 cm., https://doi.org/10.3133/wri954052.","productDescription":"iv, 12 p. :ill., col. map ;28 cm.","costCenters":[],"links":[{"id":123547,"rank":0,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/wri/1995/4052/report-thumb.jpg"},{"id":56414,"rank":300,"type":{"id":11,"text":"Document"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/wri/1995/4052/report.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}}],"noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e4a81e4b07f02db64a0fc","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Harrill, J. Specific study objectives were to (1) identify erosional and depositional reaches during two steady-state low-flow periods and one steady-state high-flow period; (2) determine if the reaches are consistently eroding or depositing, regardless of streamflow; and (3) determine the sources of suspended sediment in the river. </p><p>Erosional and depositional reaches differed between the two low-flow periods, indicating that slight changes in the channel configuration between the two periods caused changes in erosional and depositional patterns. Erosional and depositional reaches also differed between the low-flow periods and the high-flow period, indicating that channel changes and increased streamflow velocities affect erosional and depositional reaches. </p><p>The significant sources of suspended sediment in the Missouri River are the riverbed and riverbanks. The riverbed contributes to the silt and sand load in the river, and the riverbanks contribute to the clay, silt, and sand load. The contribution from tributaries to the suspendedsediment load in the Missouri River usually is small. Occasionally, during low-flow periods on the Missouri River, the Knife River can contribute significantly to the suspended-sediment load in the Missouri River. </p>","language":"English","publisher":"U.S. Geological Survey","doi":"10.3133/wri954087","usgsCitation":"Berkas, W.R., 1995, Transport and sources of sediment in the Missouri River between Garrison Dam and the headwaters of Lake Oahe, North Dakota, May 1988 through April 1991: U.S. Geological Survey Water-Resources Investigations Report 95-4087, iv, 26 p., https://doi.org/10.3133/wri954087.","productDescription":"iv, 26 p.","costCenters":[{"id":478,"text":"North Dakota Water Science Center","active":true,"usgs":true},{"id":34685,"text":"Dakota Water Science Center","active":true,"usgs":true}],"links":[{"id":157623,"rank":0,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/wri/1995/4087/report-thumb.jpg"},{"id":54985,"rank":299,"type":{"id":11,"text":"Document"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/wri/1995/4087/report.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}}],"country":"United States","state":"North Dakota","otherGeospatial":"Lake Oahe, Missouri River","noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e4a4ce4b07f02db626c29","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Berkas, Wayne R. wrberkas@usgs.gov","contributorId":425,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Berkas","given":"Wayne","email":"wrberkas@usgs.gov","middleInitial":"R.","affiliations":[{"id":5050,"text":"WY-MT Water Science Center","active":true,"usgs":true}],"preferred":true,"id":195958,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1}]}}

Here we investigate the use of different measures of developmental instability on two species, green peppers (Capsicum annuum), a plant, and Spanish ibex (Capra pyrenaica), an animal. For green peppers we compared the variance in allometric relationship between control plants, and a treatment group infected with the tomato spotted wilt virus. The results show that infected plants have a greater variance about the allometric regression line than the control plants. We also observed a reduction in complexity of branch structure in green pepper with a viral infection. Box-counting fractal dimension of branch architecture declined under stress infection. We also tested the reduction in complexity of behavioral patterns under stress situations in Spanish ibex (Capra pyrenaica). Fractal dimension of head-lift frequency distribution measures predator detection efficiency. This dimension decreased under stressful conditions, such as advanced pregnancy and parasitic infection. Feeding distribution activities reflect food searching efficiency. Power spectral analysis proves to be the most powerful tool for character- izing fractal behavior, revealing a reduction in complexity of time distribution activity under parasitic infection. </p>","language":"English","publisher":"Wiley","doi":"10.2307/3545661","usgsCitation":"Escos, J., Alados, C., and Emlen, J., 1995, Fractal structures and fractal functions as disease indicators: Oikos, v. 74, no. 2, p. 310-314, https://doi.org/10.2307/3545661.","productDescription":"5 p. Our model is based on 219 published measurements of algal cultures exposed to light-limited or nutrient-limited growth conditions. We illustrate an approach for using this estimator of Chl: C to calculate phytoplankton population growth rate from measured primary productivity. This adaptive Chl: C model gives rise to interactive light-nutrient effects in which growth efficiency increases with nutrient availability under low-light conditions. One implication of this interaction is the enhancement of phytoplankton growth efficiency, in addition to enhancement of biomass yield, as a response to eutrophication.</span></p>","language":"English","publisher":"Wiley","doi":"10.4319/lo.1995.40.7.1313","usgsCitation":"Cloern, J.E., Grenz, C., and Vidergar-Lucas, L., 1995, An empirical model of the phytoplankton chlorophyll : carbon ratio-the conversion factor between productivity and growth rate: Limnology and Oceanography, v. 40, no. 7, p. 1313-1321, https://doi.org/10.4319/lo.1995.40.7.1313.","productDescription":"9 p.
