The Pacific Mountain System, near the west coast, receives large amounts of precipitation, has very mild temperatures, and contains perhaps 90 percent of the glacier ice. The Rocky Mountain or Eastern System, on the other hand, receives nearly an order of magnitude less precipitation, has temperatures that range from subpolar to subtropic, and contains glaciers that are much smaller in both size and total area.\r\n\r\nAs a contribution to the International Hydrological Decade program on combined balances at selected glaciers, the U.S. Geological Survey is conducting studies of ice and water balance on four glaciers in the Pacific Mountain System: Wolverine and Gulkana Glaciers in Alaska, South Cascade Glacier in Washington, and Maclure Glacier in California. Similar data are being collected by other organizations at five glaciers in western Canada, including two in the Rocky Mountain System, and at one glacier in the Rocky Mountain System in northern Alaska.\r\n\r\nGulkana, Wolverine, South Cascade, and Maclure Glaciers have dissimilar mass balances, and each is fairly representative of the glaciers for its particular region. Gulkana Glacier (lat 63 deg 15' N., Alaska Range, Alaska) normally has an equilibrium line at an altitude of 1,800 m (meters), an activity index of about 6 mm/m (millimeters per meter), a winter balance of about 1.0 m, and an annual exchange of about 2.2 m. (Balance values are given in terms of water-equivalent measure; the winter balance of 1 m, for example, indicates a volume of ice equal in mass to a volume of water 1 m in depth covering the area of the glacier.) The normal approximate parameters for the other glaciers studied are as follows: Wolverine Glacier (lat 60 deg 24' N., Kenai Mountains, Alaska) - equilibrium-line altitude 1,200 m, activity index 9 mm/m, winter balance 2.5 m, and annual exchange 5.5 m; South Cascade Glacier (lat 48 deg 22' N., North Cascades, Wash.) - equilibrium-line altitude 1,900 m, activity index 17 mm/m, winter balance 3.1 m, and annual exchange 6.6 m; and Maclure Glacier (lat 37 deg 45' N., Sierra Nevada, Calif.) - equilibrium-line altitude 3,600 m, activity index 23 mm/m, winter balance 2.3 m, and annual exchange 4.6 m.\r\n\r\nMass balances of these four glaciers and their drainage basins are measured annually by standard glaciological techniques. In addition, the hydrologic balance is calculated using streamflow and precipitation measurements. Combining these independent measurements results in fairly well defined values of water and ice balance for the glaciers and drainage basins. A revision of the standard International Hydrological Decade mass-balance system permits combination of annual and stratigraphic terms.\r\n\r\nThe annual balance of South Cascade Glacier at the end of the 1965 hydrologic year was slightly positive (+0.07 m averaged over the glacier), but continued ablation and deficient accumulation in October 1965 resulted in slightly negative net balances for both the glacier and the drainage basin. Factors tending to produce this near-zero balance were the above-average late-winter balance (3.48 m) and the numerous summer snowfalls. Ice ablation averaged about 39 mm of water per day during the main melt season. Runoff during the summer ablation season was lower than the 1958-64 average.\r\n\r\nThe South Cascade Glacier annual balance in 1966 (-0.94 m) was considerably more negative mainly owing to the deficient winter snowpack (the late-winter balance was only 2.52 m) and the warm dry summer. Ice ablation averaged about 44 mm of water per day during the melt season. The loss in storage of this and other glaciers in the North Cascades increased the runoff of many valley streams by approximately 50 percent during August and September.\r\n\r\nThe 1966 Gulkana Glacier annual balance was slightly positive (+0.06 m); on the basis of past observations and the rapid terminus ret","language":"ENGLISH","publisher":"U.S. Geological Survey","doi":"10.3133/pp715A","collaboration":"A contribution to the International Hydrological Decade","usgsCitation":"Meier, M.F., Tangborn, W.V., Mayo, L.R., and Post, A., 1971, Combined Ice and Water Balances of Gulkana and Wolverine Glaciers, Alaska, and South Cascade Glacier, Washington, 1965 and 1966 Hydrologic Years: U.S. Geological Survey Professional Paper 715, 22 p., https://doi.org/10.3133/pp715A.","productDescription":"22 p.","temporalStart":"1964-10-01","temporalEnd":"1966-09-30","costCenters":[{"id":595,"text":"U.S. Geological Survey","active":false,"usgs":true}],"links":[{"id":140787,"rank":0,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/pp/0715a/report-thumb.jpg"},{"id":12506,"rank":100,"type":{"id":15,"text":"Index Page"},"url":"https://www.nps.gov/history/history/online_books/geology/publications/pp/715-A/index.htm","linkFileType":{"id":5,"text":"html"}},{"id":33352,"rank":400,"type":{"id":17,"text":"Plate"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/pp/0715a/plate-1.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":33353,"rank":401,"type":{"id":17,"text":"Plate"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/pp/0715a/plate-2.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":33354,"rank":402,"type":{"id":17,"text":"Plate"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/pp/0715a/plate-3.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":33355,"rank":403,"type":{"id":17,"text":"Plate"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/pp/0715a/plate-4.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":33356,"rank":404,"type":{"id":17,"text":"Plate"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/pp/0715a/plate-5.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":33357,"rank":405,"type":{"id":17,"text":"Plate"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/pp/0715a/plate-6.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":33358,"rank":300,"type":{"id":11,"text":"Document"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/pp/0715a/report.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}}],"noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e4b24e4b07f02db6ae731","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Meier, Mark Frederick","contributorId":30982,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Meier","given":"Mark","email":"","middleInitial":"Frederick","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":152278,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1},{"text":"Tangborn, Wendell V.","contributorId":32152,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Tangborn","given":"Wendell","email":"","middleInitial":"V.","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":152279,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":2},{"text":"Mayo, Lawrence R.","contributorId":98344,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Mayo","given":"Lawrence","email":"","middleInitial":"R.","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":152281,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":3},{"text":"Post, Austin","contributorId":90709,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Post","given":"Austin","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":152280,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":4}]}}

The principal movement on both fault systems is right-lateral strike-slip. Offset glacial features of Wisconsin age indicate minimum Holocene slip rates of 1.1 to 3.5 cm per year along parts of the Denali fault system, and 0.9 to 3.3 cm per year along the Totschunda fault system. Strike-slip movement along the Denali fault system may be no older than early Pliocene and, southeast of the Totschunda fault system junction, may have terminated by the middle Pleistocene. The strike-slip Totschunda fault system, a much younger feature probably no older than middle Pleistocene, exhibits 9 to 10 km of right-lateral offset and 1,500 m of relative vertical movement. The pluton was magmatically emplaced and is surrounded by an aureole of hornblende-hornfels facies rocks. Inclusions of country rock in ultramafic rock are of pyroxene-hornfels facies and appear to have been partly melted. Gravity studies indicate that the ultramafic bodies have near-vertical contacts extending to depths of at least 1½ to 2½ km.</p><p class=\"chapter-para\">The mafic complex shows rough concentric zoning of rock types: ultramafic bodies occur at the core; gabbro forms a discontinuous intermediate unit; and diorite, tonalite, and granodiorite occur at the margins. Within the ultramafic bodies, unserpentinized wehrlitic peridotite is dominant; dunite and olivine clinopyroxenite are present but greatly subordinate. The ultramafic rocks consist almost entirely of olivine (FO<sub>80</sub>) and diopside (Ca<sub>46</sub>Mg<sub>46</sub>Fe<sub>8</sub>); orthopyroxene, hornbolende, and plagioclase occur locally. The gabbro, diorite, tonalite, and granodiorite contain both ortho- and clinopyroxene.</p><p class=\"chapter-para\">Both ultramafic and two-pyroxene-bearing rocks were emplaced nearly simultaneously, as partly crystallized magmas and magmatic crystal mushes that had similar temperature. In all the rocks the structures are dominantly magmatic and were produced by sorting and orientation of crystals by magmatic flow. Structures produced by post-consolidation deformation and replacement are minor and local.</p><p class=\"chapter-para\">The structural and chemical relations within the mafic complex suggest that all the rocks are derived from a single gabbroic magma by crystal fractionation, with the ultramafic rocks formed by mechanical accumulation of early crystallized mafic minerals, and the two pyroxene-bearing granodiorite crystallized from a felsic differentiate. It is likely that flowage differentiation was the dominant process of crystal segregation.</p><p class=\"chapter-para\">The Emigrant Gap mafic complex is similar in structure, rock texture, and mineralogy to zoned ultramafic complexes, such as those of south-eastern Alaska, and is very different from either stratiform or alpine-type bodies. Though unlike the Alaskan bodies in detail, it appears that this complex should be classed with the zoned complexes in any broad grouping of ultramafic occurrences.</p>","language":"English","publisher":"Oxford Press","doi":"10.1093/petrology/12.3.523","usgsCitation":"James, O., 1971, Origin and emplacement of the ultramafic rocks of the Emigrant Gap area, California: Journal of Petrology, v. 12, no. 3, p. 523-560, https://doi.org/10.1093/petrology/12.3.523.","productDescription":"38 p.","startPage":"523","endPage":"560","costCenters":[{"id":243,"text":"Eastern Geology and Paleoclimate Science Center","active":true,"usgs":true}],"links":[{"id":374708,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/thumbnails/outside_thumb.jpg"}],"country":"United States","state":"California","otherGeospatial":"Emigrant Gap","geographicExtents":"{\n  \"type\": \"FeatureCollection\",\n  \"features\": [\n    {\n      \"type\": \"Feature\",\n      \"properties\": {},\n      \"geometry\": {\n        \"type\": \"Polygon\",\n        \"coordinates\": [\n          [\n            [\n              -120.75897216796876,\n              39.25618310939581\n            ],\n            [\n              -120.59967041015624,\n              39.25618310939581\n            ],\n            [\n              -120.59967041015624,\n              39.325268257858575\n            ],\n            [\n              -120.75897216796876,\n              39.325268257858575\n            ],\n            [\n              -120.75897216796876,\n              39.25618310939581\n            ]\n          ]\n        ]\n      }\n    }\n  ]\n}","volume":"12","issue":"3","noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"James, O.B.","contributorId":100526,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"James","given":"O.B.","email":"","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":788958,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1}]}}

The fossil flora is of great biogeographic interest because of its position (Fig. 1) in a tundra region about 250 km east of Bering Strait, 75 km south of the Arctic Circle, and 65 km west of the northwestern limit of spruce-birch forest. It provides insight into the history of the development of the circumpolar boreal forest (taiga). A rich arthropod fauna casts light on the phylogeny of several modern insect genera and on the origin of modern tundra faunas. The outcrops extend from Cape Lisburne (sec. 1) in the west to Egaksrak River (sec. 29) in northeastern Alaska and are used as the basic building blocks for the carbonate facies maps and the cross section. Lithologic and foraminifera samples were collected at 10-foot intervals and rugose corals were collected within each section where found. The depression appears to be a volcanic-tectonic feature, which began to form in Late Tertiary time and which is still forming. It is a graben formed by extensional rifting and accompanied by contemporaneous volcanism on the Aleutian Ridge. Subsidence rates for the depression are estimated at 20–70 cm/1,000 years. Sediments in the depression are 300 m thick and are probably pelagic and turbidite deposits of Pleistocene age. The turbidites were apparently derived from the plateau area of the Aleutian Ridge surrounding the depression. Older sediments on the northern slope of the Aleutian Ridge have a maximum thickness of 550 m and are deformed and slumped toward the Bering Sea. These sediments are postulated to overlie a mid-flank terrace on the northern Aleutian Ridge that titled to the north during the formation of Buldir Depression.</p></div></div></div><ul id=\"issue-navigation\" class=\"issue-navigation u-margin-s-bottom u-bg-grey1\"></ul>","language":"English","publisher":"Elsevier","doi":"10.1016/0025-3227(70)90073-3","issn":"00253227","usgsCitation":"Marlow, M.S., Scholl, D., Buffington, E.C., Boyce, R., Alpha, T.R., Smith, P., and Shipek, C., 1970, Buldir Depression - A Late Tertiary graben on the Aleutian Ridge, Alaska: Marine Geology, v. 8, no. 1, p. 85-108, https://doi.org/10.1016/0025-3227(70)90073-3.","productDescription":"18 p.","startPage":"85","endPage":"108","costCenters":[],"links":[{"id":219338,"rank":1,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/thumbnails/outside_thumb.jpg"}],"country":"United States","state":"Alaska","otherGeospatial":"Buldir Island","geographicExtents":"{\n \"type\": \"FeatureCollection\",\n \"features\": [\n {\n \"type\": \"Feature\",\n \"properties\": {},\n \"geometry\": {\n \"coordinates\": [\n [\n [\n 175.65032544257753,\n 52.44934701696994\n ],\n [\n 175.65032544257753,\n 52.25251141031012\n ],\n [\n 176.16468120561115,\n 52.25251141031012\n ],\n [\n 176.16468120561115,\n 52.44934701696994\n ],\n [\n 175.65032544257753,\n 52.44934701696994\n ]\n ]\n ],\n \"type\": \"Polygon\"\n }\n }\n ]\n}","volume":"8","issue":"1","noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"5059f2ace4b0c8380cd4b2b7","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Marlow, M. Bering Canyon, the world's longest known slope valley, is approximately 400 km long and has a volume of 4,300 km3. The volume of Pribilof Canyon is 1,300 km3<span>&nbsp;</span>and that of Zhemchug is 8,500 km3; Zhemchug Canyon may well be the world's largest slope valley; most other large submarine canyons have volumes less than 500 km3. Pribilof and Zhemchug canyons are further distinguished by the headward bifurcation of their slope axes to form elongated trough-shaped basins behind the regionally projected position of the shelf edge. These troughs are superimposed over structural depressions formed by down-faulted basement rocks of Mesozoic and older ages. Prior to canyon cutting these depressions were filled with as much as 2,600 m of shallow-water diatomaceous, tuffaceous, and detrital sediments largely of Tertiary age. Deposition of these sediments took place concurrently with general margin subsidence of at least 2,000 m.</p><p>The data and conclusions presented in this paper stress that the location, trend, and shape of the enormous submarine canyons cutting the Bering margin are structurally determined. However, axial cutting and headward erosion within the relatively unconsolidated Tertiary strata and the older, lithified basement rock is thought to have been caused by basinward-sliding masses of sediment; these unstable sediment bodies accumulated on the upper continental slope and outer shelf, probably near the mouths of major Alaskan rivers.</p><p>Bering Canyon was periodically cut and filled by axial sedimentation during Late Tertiary and Quaternary time. Pribilof and Zhemchug canyons, however, are thought to have been excavated entirely during the Pleistocene. It is presumed that, during one or more periods of glacially lowered sea level, the Kuskokwim and Yukon rivers emptied into or near the heads of Pribilof and Zhemchug canyons. The enormous size and unusual shape of Zhemchug Canyon resulted from the breaching of the seaward wall of an outer-shelf basement depression and the subsequent removal of nearly 4,500 km3<span>&nbsp;</span>of Tertiary deposits filling it.</p>","language":"English","publisher":"Elsevier","doi":"10.1016/0025-3227(70)90043-5","issn":"00253227","usgsCitation":"Scholl, D., Buffington, E.C., Hopkins, D., and Alpha, T.R., 1970, The structure and origin of the large submarine canyons of the Bering Sea: Marine Geology, v. 8, no. 3-4, p. 187-210, https://doi.org/10.1016/0025-3227(70)90043-5.","productDescription":"24 p.","startPage":"187","endPage":"210","costCenters":[],"links":[{"id":219758,"rank":1,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/thumbnails/outside_thumb.jpg"}],"country":"United States","state":"Alaska","otherGeospatial":"Bering Sea","geographicExtents":"{\n \"type\": \"FeatureCollection\",\n \"features\": [\n {\n \"type\": \"Feature\",\n \"properties\": {},\n \"geometry\": {\n \"type\": \"Polygon\",\n \"coordinates\": [\n [\n [\n -168.48632812499997,\n 54.77534585936447\n ],\n [\n -154.16015625,\n 54.77534585936447\n ],\n [\n -154.16015625,\n 60.19615576604439\n ],\n [\n -168.48632812499997,\n 60.19615576604439\n ],\n [\n -168.48632812499997,\n 54.77534585936447\n ]\n ]\n ]\n }\n }\n ]\n}","volume":"8","issue":"3-4","noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"505bb096e4b08c986b324f56","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Scholl, D.W.","contributorId":106461,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Scholl","given":"D.W.","email":"","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":358927,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1},{"text":"Buffington, E.
