A Level II study is a basic \nengineering analysis of the site, including a quantitative analysis of stream stability and \nscour (U.S. Department of Transportation, 1993). Results of a Level I scour investigation \nalso are included in Appendix E of this report. A Level I investigation provides a qualitative \ngeomorphic characterization of the study site. Information on the bridge, gleaned from \nVermont Agency of Transportation (VTAOT) files, was compiled prior to conducting Level \nI and Level II analyses and is found in Appendix D.</p>\n<br/>\n<p>The site is in the Green Mountain section of the New England physiographic province in \nsouthwestern Vermont. The 30.1-mi<sup>2</sup>\n drainage area is a predominantly rural and forested \nbasin. The bridge site is located within an urban setting in the Town of Bennington with \nbuildings, parking lots, lawns, and a playground on the overbank areas.</p>\n<br/>\n<p>In the study area, the Walloomsac River has a straight channel with constructed channel \nbanks through much of the reach. The channel is located on a delta and has a slope of \napproximately 0.02 ft/ft, an average channel top width of 37 ft and an average bank height \nof 5 ft. The predominant channel bed material is cobble with a median grain size (D<sub>50</sub>) of \n96.0 mm (0.315 ft). The geomorphic assessment at the time of the Level I and Level II site \nvisit on August 5, 1996, indicated that the constructed reach was stable.</p>\n<br/>\n<p>The U.S. Route 7 crossing of the Walloomsac River is a 53-ft-long, two-lane bridge \nconsisting of one 50-foot steel span (Vermont Agency of Transportation, written \ncommunication, September 27, 1995). The bridge is supported by vertical, concrete \nabutments with wingwalls. The wingwalls are angled in toward the channel because the \nwidths of the upstream and downstream constructed channel banks are narrower than the \nbridge opening. The channel is skewed approximately 5 degrees to the opening and the \nopening-skew-to-roadway is 10 degrees. </p>\n<br/>\n<p>Scour countermeasures at the site include masonry and stone walls on both the upstream \nand downstream banks. Additional details describing conditions at the site are included in \nthe Level II Summary and Appendices D and E.</p>\n<br/>\n<p>Scour depths and recommended rock rip-rap sizes were computed using the general \nguidelines described in Hydraulic Engineering Circular 18 (Richardson and others, 1995). \nTotal scour at a highway crossing is comprised of three components: 1) long-term \nstreambed degradation; 2) contraction scour (due to accelerated flow caused by a reduction \nin flow area at a bridge) and; 3) local scour (caused by accelerated flow around piers and \nabutments). Total scour is the sum of the three components. Equations are available to \ncompute depths for contraction and local scour and a summary of the results of these \ncomputations follows.</p>\n<br/>\n<p>Contraction scour computed for all modelled flows ranged from 0.0 to 0.1 ft. The worstcase contraction scour occurred at the 500-year discharge. Computed left abutment scour \nranged from 5.9 to 6.8 ft. with the worst-case scour occurring at the 500-year discharge. \nComputed right abutment scour for all modelled flows was 6.8 ft. Total scour depths for all \nmodelled flows did not exceed the depth of the abutment footings. Additional information \non scour depths and depths to armoring are included in the section titled “Scour Results”. \nScoured-streambed elevations, based on the calculated scour depths, are presented in tables \n1 and 2. A cross-section of the scour computed at the bridge is presented in figure 8. Scour \ndepths were calculated assuming an infinite depth of erosive material and a homogeneous \nparticle-size distribution.</p>\n<br/>\n<p>It is generally accepted that the Froehlich equation (abutment scour) gives “excessively \nconservative estimates of scour depths” (Richardson and others, 1995, p. 47). Average precipitation values ranged from 77 percent of normal at Trempealeau Dam 6 weather station in west central Wisconsin to 151 percent of normal at Oconto 4 W weather station in northeast Wisconsin (State Climatologist Office, Geological and Natural History Survey, written commun., 1997).</p>\n<p>Runoff was variable for rivers throughout the State ranging from 64 percent in southwest Wisconsin to 212 percent in east central Wisconsin. Runoff was lowest (64 percent of the average annual runoff from 1935-96) for the Platte River near Rockville and highest (212 percent of the average annual runoff from 1949-69, 1988-96) for the South Branch Rock River at Waupun. The INFO\ntables have soil characteristics data in them. The ITEMS in the tables\nare weighted average values for several soil characteristics in the\nSTATSGO data base. The weighted average values were computed by\naggregating the soil layers and components in the data base.\n\nThe INFO tables are called MUID.LAYER, MUID.COMP, MUID.KFACT,\nMUID.TFACT, and MUID.WEG. The INFO tables can be related or joined to\nthe MUID grid or to individual State coverages (grids or polygons) of\nMUIDs. Joining or relating the tables to the MUID grid creates\n1-kilometer resolution grids of the soil characteristics for the\nconterminous United States.\n\nThe soil characteristics in MUID.LAYER are permeability (PERML and\nPERMH in the STATSGO data base), available water capacity (AWCL and\nAWCH), bulk density (BDL and BDH), and organic matter (OML and\nOMH). These data, accumulated over many years, provide a data base for developing an improved understanding of the water quality of lakes. To make these data available to interested parties outside the USGS, the data are published annually in this report series. The location of surface water-quality and lake-stage stations in Wisconsin for water year 1996 are shown in figure 1. A water year is the 12-month period from October 1 through September 30. It is designated by the calendar year in which it ends and which includes 9 of the 12 months. Thus the period October 1, 1995 through September 30, 1996, is called \"water year 1996.\"</p>\n<p>The purpose of this report is to provide information about the physical and chemical characteristics of Wisconsin lakes. Data that have been collected at specific lakes, and information to aid in the interpretation of those data, are included in this report. Data collected includes measurements of lake stage and in-lake water quality. Graphs of Secchi depths, surface totalphosphorus and chlorophyll-a concentrations versus time are included for lakes with two or more years of data. Graphs of vertical profiles of temperature, dissolved oxygen, pH, and specific conductance are included for sites where these parameters were measured. Descriptive information for each lake includes: location of the lake, drainage area of the lake's watershed, period for which data are available, revisions to previously published records, and pertinent remarks. Additional data, such as streamflow and water quality in tributary and outlet streams of some of the lakes, are published in another volume: \"Water Resources Data-Wisconsin, We then use the observed displacement of BMs in the network to portray or predict the permanent vertical and horizontal deformation associated with the 1994 Northridge earthquake throughout the area, including sites where we lack geodetic measurements. To accomplish this, we find the fault geometry and earthquake slip that are most compatible with the geodetic and independent seismic observations of the earthquake. We then use that fault model to predict the deformation everywhere at the earth's surface, both at locations where geodetic observations exist and also where they are absent.</p>\n<br/>\n<p>We compare displacements predicted for a large number of numerical models of the earthquake faulting to the coseismic displacements, treating the earthquake fault as a cut or discontinuity embedded in a stiff elastic solid. This comparison is made after non-tectonic deformation has been removed from the measured elevation changes. The fault slip produces strain in the medium and deforms the ground surface. The model compatible with seismic observations that best fits the geodetic data within their uncertainties is selected. The acceptable model fault bisects the mainshock focus, and the earthquake size , magnitude, is compatible with the earthquake size measured seismically. For purposes of this publication, a contaminant is any element or compound whose presence may affect the water's suitability for certain uses. For example, herbicide concentrations may exceeed the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency's (USEPA) Health Advisory Levels (HAL) for drinking water or trace-element concentrations may exceed guidelines for the protection of aquatic life. In general, the contaminats discussed in this report enter the aquatic system through nonpoint-source runoff from agricultural lands that dominate the Nebraska landscape. However,because this assessment was conducted as part of a larger, national program, a screening for contaminants with non-agricultural origins was included.</p><p>The measurement of water quality involves a variety of steps, each contributing unique information while also aggregating to an overall assessment. One aspect of water-quality assesment is to describe the occurrence and distribution of contaminants. Some contaminants may be hundreds or thousands of times more concentrated in the tissues of aquatic organisms or in fine sediments than they are in the water. As a result, fish tissue and streambed sediments are well suited for the detection of certain contaminants. For example, pesticides used in the United States prior to the early 1970's, such as DDT, may have degraded into more stable but still toxic compounds that are highly concentrated in fish tissues. Conversely, other contaminants are not concentrated in sediments or tissues but are readily detected in water samples. Organonitrogen herbicides (such as atrazine), the most commonly used herbicides in Nebraska, are examples of water-soluble contaminants.</p><p>Several sampling strategies were used to address specific questions. Some sites were sampled repeatedly through time and during all hydrologic conditions, whereas others were sampled only once to determine presence of contaminants.
