Leakage from the ponds and trenches resulted in a plume of contaminated ground water extending northwestward to the Pawcatuck River through a highly permeable sand and gravel aquifer of glacial origin.","language":"English","publisher":"U.S. Government Printing Office","doi":"10.3133/pp1571","usgsCitation":"Ryan, B.J., and Kipp, K.L., 1997, Ground-water flow and contaminant transport at a The budgets are based on simulation results from computer-based models developed as part of the Regional Aquifer-System Analysis Program of the U.S. Geological Survey. Most of the models cover large areas (30,000-300,000 square miles) and generally are constructed with coarse-mesh finite-difference grids designed to simulate regional ground-water flow. The groundwater budgets derived from these models generally do not include local flow that enters and exits regional aquifers after traveling only a few miles or flow in overlying surficial aquifers. The Hueco bolson is the principal aquifer in the El Paso area. Starting in the early 1900s and continuing to the 1950s, most of the municipal and industrial water supply in El Paso was pumped from the Hueco bolson aquifer from wells in and near the Rio Grande Valley and the international border. The Rio Grande is the principal surface-water feature in the El Paso area, and a major source of recharge to the shallow aquifer (Rio Grande alluvium) within the study area is leakage of flow from the Rio Grande.
\n
The shallow aquifer and the underlying Hueco bolson aquifer are in general hydrologic connection, but wells that penetrate these aquifers have different water levels and water quality. The configuration (slope) of the predevelopment (pre- 1903) water table indicates that ground water in the Hueco bolson flowed south from the Texas-New Mexico State line toward the El Paso Valley and the Rio Grande. There the water moved upward from the Hueco bolson fill through the alluvium and discharged as seepage at the land surface or through evapotranspiration on the river flood plain. Subsequent (post-January 1903) development of the Hueco bolson has caused water levels to decline in both the bolson aquifer and the shallow aquifer, and these declines have reversed the original vertical hydraulic gradient and now cause vertical leak- 1 Hydrologist, U.S. Geological Survey. 2 Geologist, El Paso Water Utilities-Public Service Board. age downward. Water-level declines in the shallow aquifer have in turn induced increasing amounts of leakage from the Rio Grande and from irrigation canals.
\n
The reversal from upward to downward in vertical hydraulic gradient between the Rio Grande alluvium and the underlying Hueco bolson aquifer has induced shallow water in the alluvium to move downward into the deeper aquifer. The introduction of water from the alluvium probably has led to a gradual water-quality deterioration of ground water in the Hueco bolson aquifer. The extent of any deterioration is a major concern because the dissolved solids concentration in water from some wells is approaching 1,000 milligrams per liter and already has exceeded this limit in other wells.
","language":"English","publisher":"U.S. Geological Survey","publisherLocation":"Austin, TX","doi":"10.3133/wri974263","collaboration":"In cooperation with the El Paso Water Utilities-Public Service Board","usgsCitation":"White, D., Baker, E.T., and Sperka, R., 1997, Hydrology of the shallow aquifer and uppermost semiconfined aquifer near El Paso, Texas: U.S. Geological Survey Water-Resources Investigations Report 97-4263, iv, 37 p., https://doi.org/10.3133/wri974263.","productDescription":"iv, 37 p.","onlineOnly":"N","additionalOnlineFiles":"N","costCenters":[{"id":583,"text":"Texas Water Science Center","active":true,"usgs":true}],"links":[{"id":119525,"rank":0,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/wri/1997/4263/report-thumb.jpg"},{"id":59254,"rank":300,"type":{"id":11,"text":"Document"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/wri/1997/4263/report.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}}],"country":"United States","state":"Texas","noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e4a0ce4b07f02db5fc7b2","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"White, D. Water in some Quaternary and Tertiary valley-fill deposits along the Madison and upper Missouri Rivers also is locally enriched in arsenic. Arsenic in surface and ground water in these valleys is an important public- health concern because arsenic concentrations frequently exceed the State of Montana water- quality human health standard of 18 micrograms per liter as well as the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency Maximum Contaminant Level of 50 micrograms per liter. This report presents hydrologic and water-quality data for the Madison and upper Missouri Rivers and selected tributaries, irrigation supply canals or ditches, drains, springs and seeps, for Lake Helena, and for ground water in adjacent areas. Hydrologic and water-quality data were collected and compiled to provide information to more fully understand the extent, magnitude, and source of arsenic in surface and ground water along the Madison and upper Missouri Rivers; to assess, to the extent possible, the mechanisms that control arsenic concentrations; and to assess the effect of irrigation on arsenic concentrations. Hydrologic and arsenic- concentration data were collected by the U.S. Geological Survey and other agencies for 104 surface-water sites and 273 ground-water sites during this and previous studies. The quality of analytical results for arsenic concentrations was evaluated by quality-control samples that were submitted from the field and analyzed in the laboratory with routing samples. Quality-control samples consisted of replicates, standard reference samples, interlaboratory comparison samples, and field blanks.","language":"ENGLISH","publisher":"U.S. Geological Survey ;\r\nBranch of Information Services [distributor,","doi":"10.3133/ofr97203","issn":"0094-9140","usgsCitation":"Tuck, L., Dutton, D., and Nimick, D., 1997, Hydrologic and water-quality data related to the occurrence of arsenic for areas along the Madison and Upper Missouri Rivers, southwestern and west-central Montana: U.S. Geological Survey Open-File Report 97-203, v, 124 p. These interpretations are based on a comprehensive examination and review of data for more than 77 drillholes that penetrated part of the pre-Tertiary basement beneath these post-middle Miocene structural basins. Biostratigraphic data from conodont fossils were newly obtained for 31 of these holes, and a thorough review of all prior microfossil paleontologic data is incorporated in the analysis. Subsurface relationships are interpreted in light of a revised regional geologic framework synthesized from detailed geologic mapping in the ranges surrounding Yucca Flat, from comprehensive stratigraphic studies in the region, and from additional detailed field studies on and around the Nevada Test Site.

All available data indicate the subsurface geology of Yucca Flat is considerably more complicated than previous interpretations have suggested. The western part of the basin, in particular, is underlain by relics of the eastward-vergent Belted Range thrust system that are folded back toward the west and thrust by local, west-vergent contractional structures of the CP thrust system. Field evidence from the ranges surrounding the north end of Yucca Flat indicate that two significant strike-slip faults track southward beneath the post-middle Miocene basin fill, but their subsurface traces cannot be closely defined from the available evidence. In contrast, the eastern part of the Yucca Flat basin is interpreted to be underlain by a fairly simple north-trending, broad syncline in the pre-Tertiary units. Far fewer data are available for the northern Frenchman Flat basin, but regional analysis indicates the pre- Tertiary structure there should also be relatively simple and not affected by thrusting.

This new interpretation has implications for ground water flow through pre-Tertiary rocks beneath the Yucca Flat and northern Frenchman Flat areas, and has consequences for ground water modeling and model validation. Our data indicate that the Mississippian Chainman Shale is not a laterally extensive confining unit in the western part of the basin because it is folded back onto itself by the convergent structures of the Belted Range and CP thrust systems. Early and Middle Paleozoic limestone and dolomite are present beneath most of both basins and, regardless of structural complications, are interpreted to form a laterally continuous and extensive carbonate aquifer. Structural culmination that marks the French Peak accommodation zone along the topographic divide between the two basins provides a lateral pathway through highly fractured rock between the volcanic aquifers of Yucca Flat and the regional carbonate aquifer. This pathway may accelerate the migration of ground-water contaminants introduced by underground nuclear testing toward discharge areas beyond the Nevada Test Site boundaries. Predictive three-dimensional models of hydrostratigraphic units and ground-water flow in the pre-Tertiary rocks of subsurface Yucca Flat are likely to be unrealistic due to the extreme structural complexities. The interpretation of hydrologic and geochemical data obtained from monitoring wells will be difficult to extrapolate through the flow system until more is known about the continuity of hydrostratigraphic units.
","language":"English","publisher":"U.S. Geological Survey","doi":"10.3133/ofr97678","collaboration":"Prepared in cooperation with the Nevada Operations Office U.S. Department of Energy (Interagency Agreement DE-AI08-96NV11967)","usgsCitation":"Cole, J., Harris, A.G., and Wahl, R., 1997, Sub-crop geologic map of pre-Tertiary rocks in the Yucca Flat and northern Frenchman Flat areas, Nevada Test Site, southern Nevada: U.S. Geological Survey Open-File Report 97-678, Report: ii, 24 p.; 1 Plate: 32.55 x 41.15 inches, https://doi.org/10.3133/ofr97678.","productDescription":"Report: ii, 24 p.; 1 Plate: 32.55 x 41.15 inches","costCenters":[],"links":[{"id":425886,"rank":4,"type":{"id":36,"text":"NGMDB Index Page"},"url":"https://ngmdb.usgs.gov/Prodesc/proddesc_18824.htm","linkFileType":{"id":5,"text":"html"}},{"id":60238,"rank":3,"type":{"id":11,"text":"Document"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1997/0678/report.pdf","text":"Report","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"},"description":"Report"},{"id":163317,"rank":1,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1997/0678/report-thumb.jpg"},{"id":335274,"rank":2,"type":{"id":17,"text":"Plate"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1997/0678/plate-1.pdf","text":"Plate","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"},"description":"Plate"}],"country":"United States","state":"Nevada","otherGeospatial":"Yucca Flat and northern Frenchman Flat areas","geographicExtents":"{\n \"type\": \"FeatureCollection\",\n \"features\": [\n {\n \"type\": \"Feature\",\n \"properties\": {},\n \"geometry\": {\n \"type\": \"Polygon\",\n \"coordinates\": [\n [\n [\n -116.25,\n 36.892\n ],\n [\n -115.85,\n 36.892\n ],\n [\n -115.85,\n 37.283\n ],\n [\n -116.25,\n 37.283\n ],\n [\n -116.25,\n 36.892\n ]\n ]\n ]\n }\n }\n ]\n}","noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e4b05e4b07f02db699c80","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Cole, J. The model is applicable to a ground-water flow system that is driven by areally uniform recharge to the water table, and in which ground water discharges to a gaining stream. One of the two formulations used by the model allows for an instantaneous recharge pulse and subsequent ground-water discharge to the stream. The other formulation, which allows for a gradual hydrologic gain or loss term in addition to the instantaneous pulse, can be used to simulate the effects of gradual recharge to the water table, ground-water evapotranspiration, or downward leakage to a deeper aquifer.","language":"ENGLISH","publisher":"U.S. Dept. of the Interior, U.S. Geological Survey ;\r\nInformation Services [distributor],","doi":"10.3133/wri974253","usgsCitation":"Rutledge, A.T., 1997, Model-estimated ground-water recharge and hydrograph of ground-water discharge to a stream: U.S. Geological Survey Water-Resources Investigations Report 97-4253, vi, 29 p. :ill. ;28 cm., https://doi.org/10.3133/wri974253.","productDescription":"vi, 29 p. :ill. ;28 cm.","costCenters":[],"links":[{"id":122693,"rank":0,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/thumbnails/wri_97_4253.jpg"},{"id":2484,"rank":100,"type":{"id":15,"text":"Index Page"},"url":"https://pubs.water.usgs.gov/wri974253","linkFileType":{"id":5,"text":"html"}}],"noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e4a28e4b07f02db611022","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Rutledge, A. The Western Lake Michigan Drainages was one of 20 study units selected for investigation to begin in 1991. The study-unit investigation will include an assessment of surface- and ground-water quality. The quality of water in a study unit is intrinsically related to the natural and anthropogenic features of the study unit. The natural features include geology, weather and climate, vegetation, and hydrology. The anthropogenic features of the basin include population distribution, land use and land cover, agricultural practices, and water use. This report describes the natural and anthropogenic features that constitute the environmental setting of the Western Lake Michigan Drainages as well as the implications of those features on the water quality.
","language":"English","publisher":"U.S. Geological Survey","doi":"10.3133/wri974196","usgsCitation":"1997, Environmental setting and implications for water quality in the Western Lake Michigan Drainages: U.S. Geological Survey Water-Resources Investigations Report 97-4196, ix, 79 p., https://doi.org/10.3133/wri974196.","productDescription":"ix, 79 p.","numberOfPages":"88","onlineOnly":"N","additionalOnlineFiles":"N","costCenters":[{"id":677,"text":"Wisconsin Water Science Center","active":true,"usgs":true}],"links":[{"id":54203,"rank":300,"type":{"id":11,"text":"Document"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/wri/1997/4196/report.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":118942,"rank":0,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/wri/1997/4196/report-thumb.jpg"}],"country":"United States","state":"Wisconsin","geographicExtents":"{\n  \"type\": \"FeatureCollection\",\n  \"features\": [\n    {\n      \"type\": \"Feature\",\n      \"properties\": {},\n      \"geometry\": {\n        \"type\": \"Polygon\",\n        \"coordinates\": [\n          [\n            [\n              -86.429443359375,\n              45.61403741135093\n            ],\n            [\n              -86.66015624999999,\n              46.40756396630067\n            ],\n            [\n              -87.099609375,\n              46.41513877649202\n            ],\n            [\n              -87.51708984375,\n              46.53619267489863\n            ],\n            [\n              -87.71484375,\n              46.626806395355175\n            ],\n            [\n              -88.033447265625,\n              46.7549166192819\n            ],\n            [\n              -88.13232421875,\n              46.7549166192819\n            ],\n            [\n              -88.39599609375,\n              46.76244305208004\n            ],\n            [\n              -88.934326171875,\n              46.604167162931844\n            ],\n            [\n              -89.176025390625,\n              46.52863469527167\n            ],\n            [\n              -89.296875,\n              46.32417161725694\n            ],\n            [\n              -89.84619140625,\n              45.4524242413431\n            ],\n            [\n              -90.142822265625,\n              44.56699093657141\n            ],\n            [\n              -90.274658203125,\n              43.667871610117494\n            ],\n            [\n              -89.84619140625,\n              43.068887774169625\n            ],\n            [\n              -89.47265625,\n              42.819580715795915\n            ],\n            [\n              -88.9013671875,\n              42.69858589169842\n            ],\n            [\n              -88.26416015625,\n              42.601619944327965\n            ],\n            [\n              -87.791748046875,\n              42.48019996901214\n            ],\n            [\n              -87.6708984375,\n              42.827638636242284\n            ],\n            [\n              -87.78076171875,\n              43.1811470593997\n            ],\n            [\n              -87.5390625,\n              44.07969327425713\n            ],\n            [\n              -87.308349609375,\n              44.55916341529184\n            ],\n            [\n              -86.8359375,\n              45.22848059584359\n            ],\n            [\n              -86.781005859375,\n              45.43700828867389\n            ],\n            [\n              -86.737060546875,\n              45.460130637921004\n            ],\n            [\n              -86.429443359375,\n              45.61403741135093\n            ]\n          ]\n        ]\n      }\n    }\n  ]\n}","noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e4a13e4b07f02db602287","contributors":{"editors":[{"text":"Peters, C.A.","contributorId":29794,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Peters","given":"C.A.","email":"","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":749314,"contributorType":{"id":2,"text":"Editors"},"rank":1}]}}

Five production wells at the site are cased through the alluvial aquifer and underlying units and are screened in either the Paluxy or Twin Mountains aquifers. Three abandoned wells, originally completed in the Twin Mountains aquifer but filled with drilling mud in 1958, also penetrate the alluvial aquifer. The Paluxy and Twin Mountains aquifers are used for drinking-water supplies in and around the Dallas-Fort Worth metroplex.
\n
Trichloroethylene and its degradation products, dichloroethylene and vinyl chloride, and the metal chromium previously have been detected in the shallow alluvial aquifer. Current (1995) analyses of water-quality samples taken from the static water column of the five production wells and one of the abandoned wells indicate no trichloroethylene, dichloroethylene, or vinyl chloride in the water column of these wells. Chromium was detected in all samples, but concentrations were less than the practical quantitation limit, which is the regulatory action level for this site.
\n
The results of borehole geophysical log analysis indicate that two of the production wells could have vertically connected intervals where cement bonding in the well annulus is poor. The other production wells have overall good bonding. Temperature logs do not indicate flow behind casing except in the screened interval of one well. Geophysical logs show the Eagle Ford Shale ranges from 147 to 185 feet thick at the site. The Eagle Ford Shale has low permeability and a high plasticity index. These physical characteristics make the Eagle Ford Shale an excellent confining unit.
","language":"English","publisher":"U.S. Geological Survey","publisherLocation":"Austin, TX","doi":"10.3133/wri974047","collaboration":"Prepared in cooperation with the Southern Division Naval Facilities Engineering Command","usgsCitation":"Jones, S.A., and Paillet, F.L., 1997, Integrity of production wells and confining unit at the Naval Weapons Industrial Reserve Plant, Dallas, Texas, 1995: U.S. Geological Survey Water-Resources Investigations Report 97-4047, iv, 30 p., https://doi.org/10.3133/wri974047.","productDescription":"iv, 30 p.","onlineOnly":"N","additionalOnlineFiles":"N","costCenters":[{"id":583,"text":"Texas Water Science Center","active":true,"usgs":true},{"id":589,"text":"Toxic Substances Hydrology Program","active":true,"usgs":true}],"links":[{"id":122662,"rank":1,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/thumbnails/wri_97_4047.jpg"},{"id":415738,"rank":3,"type":{"id":36,"text":"NGMDB Index Page"},"url":"https://ngmdb.usgs.gov/Prodesc/proddesc_48677.htm","linkFileType":{"id":5,"text":"html"}},{"id":2195,"rank":2,"type":{"id":15,"text":"Index Page"},"url":"https://pubs.water.usgs.gov/wri97-4047/","linkFileType":{"id":5,"text":"html"}}],"country":"United States","state":"Texas","county":"Dallas","otherGeospatial":"Naval Weapons Industrial Reserve Plant","geographicExtents":"{\n  \"type\": \"FeatureCollection\",\n  \"features\": [\n    {\n      \"type\": \"Feature\",\n      \"properties\": {},\n      \"geometry\": {\n        \"type\": \"Polygon\",\n        \"coordinates\": [\n          [\n            [\n              -96.97206974029541,\n              32.745630348985976\n            ],\n            [\n              -96.97224140167236,\n              32.738013925875606\n            ],\n            [\n              -96.97473049163818,\n              32.737977827533605\n            ],\n            [\n              -96.97704792022705,\n              32.73844710483917\n            ],\n            [\n              -96.97696208953857,\n              32.73689487047408\n            ],\n            [\n              -96.97751998901367,\n              32.73700316677224\n            ],\n            [\n              -96.97794914245605,\n              32.736389486009415\n            ],\n            [\n              -96.9792366027832,\n              32.73570360250915\n            ],\n            [\n              -96.97992324829102,\n              32.734801116177394\n            ],\n            [\n              -96.98571681976318,\n              32.73476501653406\n            ],\n            [\n              -96.98588848114014,\n              32.735631403938896\n            ],\n            [\n              -96.98627471923828,\n              32.736281188965556\n            ],\n            [\n              -96.98661804199219,\n              32.73667827748301\n            ],\n            [\n              -96.98726177215576,\n              32.73696706802081\n            ],\n            [\n              -96.98773384094237,\n              32.738013925875606\n            ],\n            [\n              -96.9873046875,\n              32.7450889186024\n            ],\n            [\n              -96.97206974029541,\n              32.745630348985976\n            ]\n          ]\n        ]\n      }\n    }\n  ]\n}","noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e4ab0e4b07f02db66d630","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Jones, Sonya A. 0000-0002-7462-8576 sajones@usgs.gov","orcid":"https://orcid.org/0000-0002-7462-8576","contributorId":1690,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Jones","given":"Sonya","email":"sajones@usgs.gov","middleInitial":"A.","affiliations":[],"preferred":true,"id":198917,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1},{"text":"Paillet, Frederick L.","contributorId":38191,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Paillet","given":"Frederick","email":"","middleInitial":"L.","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":198918,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":2}]}}

Geological Survey Bureau: the University of Iowa Hygienic Laboratory; and the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) have been working together to address this question. As part of the Iowa Ground-Water Monitoring Program (IGWM). water samples have been collected from selected Iowa municipal wells since 1982. An examination of this data identified two trends: (1) concentrations of atrazine in Iowa's ground water generally were decreasing over time, and (2) concentrations of metolachlor generally were increasing. Bannock Creek Basin covers 475 square miles in southeastern Idaho. Shoshone-Bannock tribal lands on the Fort Hall Indian Reservation occupy the northern part of the basin; the remainder of the basin is privately owned.
\n
\n
Only a small amount of information on the hydrologic and water-quality characteristics of Bannock Creek Basin is available, and two previous estimates of water yield from the basin ranged widely from 45,000 to 132,500 acre-feet per year. The Shoshone-Bannock Tribes need an accurate determination of water yield and baseline water-quality characteristics to plan and implement a sustainable level of water use in the basin.
\n
\n
Geologic setting, quantities of precipitation, \nevapotranspiration, surface-water runoff, recharge, \nand ground-water underflow were used to determine \nwater yield in the basin. Water yield is the \nannual amount of surface and ground water available \nin excess of evapotranspiration by crops and \nnative vegetation. Water yield from Bannock Creek \nBasin was affected by completion of irrigation \nprojects in 1964. Average 1965-89 water yield \nfrom five subbasins in Bannock Creek Basin determined \nfrom water budgets was 60,600 acre-feet per \nyear. Water yield from the Fort Hall Indian Reservation \npart of Bannock Creek Basin was estimated \nto be 37,700 acre-feet per year.
\n
\n
Water from wells, springs, and streams is a \ncalcium bicarbonate type. Concentrations of dissolved \nnitrite plus nitrate as nitrogen and fluoride \nwere less than Maximum Contaminant Levels for \npublic drinking-water supplies established by the \nU.S. Environmental Protection Agency. Equations for estimating peak-discharge frequencies for ungaged streams in the county were developed by combining (1) long-term annual peakdischarge data and rainfall-runoff data collected from 1991 to 1995 in 13 urban basins and (2) long-term annual peak-discharge data in four rural basins located in hydrologically similar areas of neighboring counties. The basins ranged in size from 1.36 to 64.0 square miles. The U.S. Geological Survey Rainfall- Runoff Model (RRM) was calibrated for each of the urban basins. The calibrated models were used with long-term, historical rainfall and pan-evaporation data to simulate 79 years of annual peak-discharge data. Peak-discharge frequencies were estimated by fitting the logarithms of the annual peak discharges to a Pearson-Type III frequency distribution. The simulated peak-discharge frequencies were adjusted for improved reliability by application of bias-correction factors derived from peakdischarge frequencies based on local, observed annual peak discharges. The three-parameter and the preferred seven-parameter nationwide urban-peak-discharge regression equations previously developed by USGS investigators provided biased (high) estimates for the urban basins studied. Generalized-least-square regression procedures were used to relate peakdischarge frequency to selected basin characteristics. Regression equations were developed to estimate peak-discharge frequency by adjusting peak-dischargefrequency estimates made by use of the threeparameter nationwide urban regression equations. The regression equations are presented in equivalent forms as functions of contributing drainage area, main-channel slope, and basin development factor, which is an index for measuring the efficiency of the basin drainage system. Estimates of peak discharges for streams in the county can be made for the 2-, 5-, 10-, 25-, 50-, and 100-year recurrence intervals by use of the regression equations. The average standard errors of prediction of the regression equations ranges from ? 34 to ? 45 percent. The regression equations are applicable to ungaged streams in the county having a specific range of basin characteristics.","language":"ENGLISH","publisher":"U.S. Geological Survey ;\r\nBranch of Information Services [distributor],","doi":"10.3133/wri974219","usgsCitation":"Martin, G.R., Ruhl, K.J., Moore, B.L., and Rose, M.F., 1997, Estimation of peak-discharge frequency of urban streams in Jefferson County, Kentucky: U.S. Geological Survey Water-Resources Investigations Report 97-4219, viii, 40 p. :ill., maps ;28 cm., https://doi.org/10.3133/wri974219.","productDescription":"viii, 40 p. :ill., maps ;28 cm.","costCenters":[],"links":[{"id":1853,"rank":300,"type":{"id":11,"text":"Document"},"url":"https://ky.water.usgs.gov/pubs/wrir_1997_4219.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":124914,"rank":0,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/wri/1997/4219/report-thumb.jpg"},{"id":54209,"rank":300,"type":{"id":11,"text":"Document"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/wri/1997/4219/report.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}}],"noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e4a09e4b07f02db5fa885","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Martin, Gary R. 0000-0002-3274-5846 grmartin@usgs.gov","orcid":"https://orcid.org/0000-0002-3274-5846","contributorId":3413,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Martin","given":"Gary","email":"grmartin@usgs.gov","middleInitial":"R.","affiliations":[{"id":354,"text":"Kentucky Water Science Center","active":true,"usgs":true}],"preferred":true,"id":193892,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1},{"text":"Ruhl, Kevin J.","contributorId":35769,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Ruhl","given":"Kevin","email":"","middleInitial":"J.","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":193893,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":2},{"text":"Moore, Brian L.","contributorId":100021,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Moore","given":"Brian","email":"","middleInitial":"L.","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":193895,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":3},{"text":"Rose, Martin F.","contributorId":49826,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Rose","given":"Martin","email":"","middleInitial":"F.","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":193894,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":4}]}}

Water-level, streamflow, and water-quality data collected before July 1993 were assumed to be representative of pre-flood conditions, and data collected from July 1993 through May 1994 were used to evaluate the ground-water response.

Water levels in 49 wells were measured every 3 weeks, when possible, between November 1993 and May 1994. Water samples were collected from 16 of the wells during November 1993 and March, April, and May 1994 and analyzed for major ions, nutrients, selected trace elements, and pesticides. The water-level and water-quality data collected during the study, along with similar data collected during previous investigations and during the National Water-Quality Assessment study, provided the basis for describing the general characteristics of the hydrology and water quality of the Sheyenne Delta aquifer.

Generally, precipitation and flooding affect water levels in the aquifer. The largest water-level rise occurs in low-relief areas, and water subsequently moves down-gradient toward the river. Topography strongly affects the focus of recharge in the aquifer. During high stage in the river, ground-water flow gradients near the river can reverse, and water flows from the river into the aquifer. Water in the Sheyenne Delta aquifer before and after the 1993 flood generally was a calcium bicarbonate type. Little variation exists between pre-flood and post-flood water-quality conditions in the aquifer. Water quality in the aquifer is affected mainly by precipitation, evapotranspiration, inflow from adjacent ground water, and inflow from the Sheyenne River.
","language":"English","publisher":"U.S. Geological Survey","doi":"10.3133/wri974163","usgsCitation":"Strobel, M., and Radig, S., 1997, Effects of the 1993 flood on water levels and water quality in the Sheyenne Delta Aquifer, southeastern North Dakota, 1993-94: U.S. Geological Survey Water-Resources Investigations Report 97-4163, iv, 43 p., https://doi.org/10.3133/wri974163.","productDescription":"iv, 43 p.","costCenters":[{"id":478,"text":"North Dakota Water Science Center","active":true,"usgs":true},{"id":34685,"text":"Dakota Water Science Center","active":true,"usgs":true}],"links":[{"id":58801,"rank":300,"type":{"id":11,"text":"Document"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/wri/1997/4163/report.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":119454,"rank":0,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/wri/1997/4163/report-thumb.jpg"}],"noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e4a28e4b07f02db61097e","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Strobel, M.L.","contributorId":81945,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Strobel","given":"M.L.","email":"","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":202494,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1},{"text":"Radig, S.A.","contributorId":23591,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Radig","given":"S.A.","email":"","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":202493,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":2}]}}

Because wetlands typically have a large diversity of microorganisms and redox conditions that could enhance biodegradation, they are ideal environments for natural attenuation of organic contaminants, which is a treatment method that would leave the ecosystem largely undisturbed and be cost effective. During 1992-97, the U.S. Geological Survey investigated the natural attenuation of chlorinated volatile organic compounds (VOC's) in a contaminant plume that discharges from a sand aquifer to a freshwater tidal wetland along the West Branch Canal Creek at Aberdeen Proving Ground, Maryland. Characterization of the hydrogeology and geochemistry along flowpaths in the wetland area and determination of the occurrence and rates of biodegradation and sorption show that natural attenuation could be a feasible remediation method for the contaminant plume that extends along the West Branch Canal Creek. A volume model was developed for evaluating glacier volumes on Redoubt Volcano. The volume model is based on third-order polynomial simulations of valley cross sections. The third-order polynomial is an interpolation from the valley walls exposed above glacier surfaces and takes advantage of ice-thickness measurements. The fortuitous 1989-90 eruptions removed the ice from a 4.5-kilometer length of Drift glacier, providing a unique opportunity for verification of the volume model. A 2.5-kilometer length was chosen in the denuded glacier valley and the ice volume was measured by digitally comparing two new maps: one derived from the most recent pre-eruption 1979 aerial photographs and the other from post-eruption 1990 aerial photographs. The measured volume in the reference reach was 99 x 106 cubic meters, about 1 percent less than was estimated by the volume model. The volume estimate produced by this volume model was much closer to the measured volume than was the volume estimated by other techniques. The verified volume model was used to evaluate the total volume of perennial snow and glacier ice on Redoubt Volcano, which was estimated to be 4.1?0.8 cubic kilometers. Substantial snow and ice covers on volcanoes exacerbate the hydrologic hazards associated with eruptions. The volume on Redoubt Volcano is about 23 times the volume that was present on Mount St. Helens before its 1980 eruption, which generated lahars and floods.","language":"ENGLISH","publisher":"U.S. Geological Survey ;\r\nBranch of Information Services [distributor],","doi":"10.3133/wri974187","usgsCitation":"Trabant, D.C., and Hawkins, D.B., 1997, Glacier ice-volume modeling and glacier volumes on Redoubt Volcano, Alaska: U.S. Geological Survey Water-Resources Investigations Report 97-4187, iv, 29 p. :ill., maps ;28 cm., https://doi.org/10.3133/wri974187.","productDescription":"iv, 29 p. :ill., maps ;28 cm.","costCenters":[],"links":[{"id":124875,"rank":0,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/wri/1997/4187/report-thumb.jpg"},{"id":58985,"rank":300,"type":{"id":11,"text":"Document"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/wri/1997/4187/report.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}}],"noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e4ac5e4b07f02db679bcb","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Trabant, Dennis C.","contributorId":13965,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Trabant","given":"Dennis","email":"","middleInitial":"C.","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":202831,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1},{"text":"Hawkins, Daniel B.","contributorId":10842,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Hawkins","given":"Daniel","email":"","middleInitial":"B.","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":202830,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":2}]}}
