More than 90 samples from 15 distinct regions are represented in 13 data categories. This database has permitted preliminary description of gas hydrate (chiefly methane hydrate) tendencies and associations with respect to their geological environment.\r\n\r\nGas hydrates have been recovered from offshore sediment worldwide and from total depths (water depth plus subseabed depth) ranging from 500 m to nearly 6,000 m. Samples have come from subbottom depths ranging from 0 to 400 m. Various physiographic provinces are represented in the data set including second order landforms such as continental margins and deep-sea trenches, and third order forms such as submarine canyons, continental slopes, continental margin ridges and intraslope basins. There is a clear association between fault zones and other manifestations of local, tectonic-related processes, and hydrate-bearing sediment.\r\n\r\nSamples of gas hydrate frequently consist of individual grains or particles. These types of hydrates are often further described as inclusions or disseminated in the sediment. Moreover, hydrates occur as a cement, as nodules, or as layers (mostly laminae) or in veins. The preponderance of hydrates that could be characterized as 2- dimensional (planar) were associated with fine sediment, either as intercalated layers or in fractures. Hydrate cements were commonly associated with coarser sediment.\r\n\r\nHydrates have been found in association with grain sizes ranging from clay through gravel. More hydrates are associated with the more abundant finer-grained sediment than with coarser sediment, and many were discovered in the presence of both fine (silt and clay) and coarse sediment.\r\n\r\nThe thickness of hydrate zones (i. e., sections of hydrate-bearing sediment) varies from a few centimeters to as much as 30 m. In contrast, the thickness of layers of pure hydrate or the dimensions of individual hydrate grains were most often characterized in terms of millimeters or centimeters, although a pure hydrate layer discovered in the Middle America Trench off Guatemala was as much as 3-4-m-thick. The data suggest that grains, or thin veins or laminae of pure gas hydrate may be ubiquitous in many hydrate zones but that typically they may only comprise a minor component of the thicker zones.\r\n\r\nIn more than 80 percent of the hydrate samples the methane was of biogenic origin. The methane in the remainder was either classified as (or may be at least part) thermogenic. Each site where thermogenic gas was identified is characterized by faults or other manifestions of a dynamic geological environment (e.g., diapirs, mud volcanoes, gas seeps).\r\n\r\nEvery sample in the database came from within the zone of theoretical methane hydrate stability, as determined on the basis of assumed regional pressure and temperature gradients. Most show that they were situated --- expressed in terms of depth --- well above the phase boundary and about 70% of the samples were located more than 100 m above the assumed regional position of that boundary. The calculated subseabed positions of the phase boundaries and the BSRs (bottom simulating reflector) are essentially identical. This may be taken as general corroboration of the regional phase boundary calculations and the concept of the BSR.\r\n\r\nThree provocative aspects of marine gas hydrates have been disclosed by the database: \r\n\r\ngas hydrates are frequently situated at much shallower subseabed depths than the assumed contemporary position of the regional phase boundary \r\n\r\nhydrates are often found in areas typified by faults or other indicators of a dynamic geological environment \r\n\r\nzones of gas hydrate-bearing sediment tend to be tens of centimeters to tens of meters thick but the hydrate within the thicker zones tends to be only a minor constituent. \r\n\r\nWhether existing as dispersed particles, cements, or pure layers or vein","language":"ENGLISH","doi":"10.3133/ofr96272","usgsCitation":"Booth, J.S., Rowe, M.M., and Fisher, K.M., 1996, Offshore gas hydrate sample database with an overview and preliminary analysis: U.S. Geological Survey Open-File Report 96-272, 17 p., 1 over-size sheet :col. ill.;28 cm., https://doi.org/10.3133/ofr96272.","productDescription":"17 p., 1 over-size sheet :col. ill.;28 cm.","costCenters":[],"links":[{"id":160681,"rank":0,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/thumbnails/usgs_thumb.jpg"},{"id":3301,"rank":100,"type":{"id":15,"text":"Index Page"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1996/of96-272/","linkFileType":{"id":5,"text":"html"}}],"noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e4af4e4b07f02db691d6e","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Booth, James S.","contributorId":93477,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Booth","given":"James","email":"","middleInitial":"S.","affiliations":[{"id":678,"text":"Woods Hole Coastal and Marine Science Center","active":true,"usgs":true}],"preferred":false,"id":207423,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1},{"text":"Rowe, Mary M.","contributorId":11259,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Rowe","given":"Mary","email":"","middleInitial":"M.","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":207421,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":2},{"text":"Fisher, Kathleen M.","contributorId":43397,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Fisher","given":"Kathleen","email":"","middleInitial":"M.","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":207422,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":3}]}}

Ground-water levels reached nearly 30 feet below sea level in the Annapolis area, 113 feet below sea level southwest of Waldorf, and more than 30 feet below sea level at the Chalk Point powerplant.","language":"ENGLISH","doi":"10.3133/ofr96622","usgsCitation":"Curtin, S.E., Andreasen, D., and Mack, F., 1996, Potentiometric Surface of the Upper Patapsco Aquifer in Southern Maryland, September 1995: U.S. Geological Survey Open-File Report 96-622, 1 map : photocopy ; 20 x 17 cm., on sheet 28 x 22 cm., https://doi.org/10.3133/ofr96622.","productDescription":"1 map : photocopy ; 20 x 17 cm., on sheet 28 x 22 cm.","costCenters":[],"links":[{"id":159929,"rank":0,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1996/0622/report-thumb.jpg"},{"id":59927,"rank":300,"type":{"id":11,"text":"Document"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1996/0622/report.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}}],"noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e4ad4e4b07f02db683200","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Curtin, Stephen E. securtin@usgs.gov","contributorId":3703,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Curtin","given":"Stephen","email":"securtin@usgs.gov","middleInitial":"E.","affiliations":[{"id":374,"text":"Maryland Water Science Center","active":true,"usgs":true}],"preferred":true,"id":206763,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1},{"text":"Andreasen, David C.","contributorId":59003,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Andreasen","given":"David C.","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":206764,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":2},{"text":"Mack, Frederick K.","contributorId":95858,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Mack","given":"Frederick K.","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":206765,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":3}]}}

Long-term goals of NAWQA are to describe the status of and trends in the quality of a large, representative part of the Nation?s surface- and ground-water resources and to provide a sound, scientific understanding of the primary natural and human factors affecting the quality of these resources (Leahy and others, 1990). The Trinity River Basin in east-central Texas (fig. 1) was among the first 20 hydrologic areas, called study units, to be assessed by this program. The first intensive data-collection phase for the Trinity River Basin NAWQA began in March 1993 and ended in September 1995. Streams in the Trinity River Basin were assessed by sampling water, bed sediment, and tissue of biota and characterizing the aquatic communities and their habitat. Aquifers were assessed by sampling water from wells. The coastal prairie is a small part of the Trinity River Basin, but it is environmentally important because of its proximity to Galveston Bay and the extensive use of agricultural chemicals on many irrigated farms. Galveston Bay (fig. 1) was selected by Congress as an estuary of national significance and was included on a priority list for the National Estuary Program. The Trinity River is especially important because its watershed dominates the total Galveston Bay drainage area and because its flow contributes substantial amounts of freshwater and water-quality constituents to the bay. Historically, measurements of the quantity and quality of water entering Galveston Bay from the Trinity River Basin have been made using data from a station about 113 kilometers (70 miles) upstream from Trinity Bay, an inlet bay to Galveston Bay. With a focused objective of providing additional water-quality information in the intervening coastal prairie area and an overall objective of improving the understanding of the relations between farming practices and stream quality in the Trinity River Basin, a special study was conducted. This report provides a description of the occurrence and concentrations of nutrients in two streams in this intervening area. An earlier report by Brown (1996) describes the occurrence and concentrations of pesticides in these two streams. An overall analysis of nutrient data collected during 1974?91 in the Trinity River Basin is given by Van Metre and Reutter (1995).</p>","language":"English","publisher":"U.S. Geological Survey","doi":"10.3133/ofr96558","issn":"0094-9140","usgsCitation":"Land, L.F., 1996, Water-quality assessment of the Trinity River Basin, Texas - Nutrients in two coastal prairie streams draining agricultural areas, 1994-95: U.S. Geological Survey Open-File Report 96-558, 4 p., https://doi.org/10.3133/ofr96558.","productDescription":"4 p.","onlineOnly":"N","additionalOnlineFiles":"N","costCenters":[{"id":583,"text":"Texas Water Science Center","active":true,"usgs":true},{"id":595,"text":"U.S. Geological Survey","active":false,"usgs":true}],"links":[{"id":156112,"rank":0,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1996/0558/report-thumb.jpg"},{"id":11559,"rank":300,"type":{"id":11,"text":"Document"},"url":"https://tx.usgs.gov/projects/trin/pubs/pdf/ofr-96-558.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":52920,"rank":300,"type":{"id":11,"text":"Document"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1996/0558/report.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}}],"noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e49f1e4b07f02db5ee615","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Land, Larry F.","contributorId":60612,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Land","given":"Larry","email":"","middleInitial":"F.","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":190502,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1}]}}

A cooperative study between the city of Cedar Rapids, Iowa, and the U.S. Geological Survey was started in March 1992 to assess the water quality and water quantity of the ground-water resource. This report summarizes selected hydrogeologic data collected from October 1992 through March 1996. Information collected includes water quality (major ions, nutrients, and pesticides), ground-water levels, multiprobe-instrument data (water levels, specific conductance, pH, water temperature, and dissolved oxygen monitored at 15-, 30-, or 60-minute intervals), well information (location, casing type, screen interval, and depth), and geophysical seismic-refraction and seismic-reflection data (estimated depth to bedrock and alluvial thickness along the Cedar River). Geologic, hydrologic, and water-quality data were collected from domestic, municipal, observation, and industrial wells and the Cedar River. Well-construction data for more than 300 wells in the Cedar Rapids area in Benton and Linn Counties, Iowa, were compiled primarily from records on file with the Iowa Department of Natural Resources, Geologic Survey Bureau (Iowa City).</p>","language":"English","publisher":"U.S. Geological Survey","publisherLocation":"Iowa City, IA","doi":"10.3133/ofr96471","issn":"0094-9140","collaboration":"Prepared in cooperation with the City of Cedar Rapids, Iowa","usgsCitation":"Schnoebelen, D., and Schulmeyer, P., 1996, Selected hydrogeologic data from the Cedar Rapids Area, Benton and Linn counties, Iowa, October 1992 through March 1996: U.S. Geological Survey Open-File Report 96-471, vi, 163 p., https://doi.org/10.3133/ofr96471.","productDescription":"vi, 163 p.","onlineOnly":"N","additionalOnlineFiles":"N","costCenters":[{"id":351,"text":"Iowa Water Science Center","active":true,"usgs":true}],"links":[{"id":155505,"rank":0,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1996/0471/report-thumb.jpg"},{"id":53551,"rank":300,"type":{"id":11,"text":"Document"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1996/0471/report.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}}],"country":"United States","state":"Iowa","county":"Benton County, Linn County","geographicExtents":"{\n  \"type\": \"FeatureCollection\",\n  \"features\": [\n    {\n      \"type\": \"Feature\",\n      \"properties\": {},\n      \"geometry\": {\n        \"type\": \"Polygon\",\n        \"coordinates\": [\n          [\n            [\n              -91.88690185546875,\n              41.870583462266836\n            ],\n            [\n              -91.88690185546875,\n              42.12674735753131\n            ],\n            [\n              -91.61224365234375,\n              42.12674735753131\n            ],\n            [\n              -91.61224365234375,\n              41.870583462266836\n            ],\n            [\n              -91.88690185546875,\n              41.870583462266836\n            ]\n          ]\n        ]\n      }\n    }\n  ]\n}","noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e4a07e4b07f02db5f935a","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Schnoebelen, D.J.","contributorId":98352,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Schnoebelen","given":"D.J.","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":192008,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1},{"text":"Schulmeyer, P.M.","contributorId":17208,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Schulmeyer","given":"P.M.","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":192007,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":2}]}}

The analytes are isolated from the pore-water matrix byextraction onto a graphitized carbon-black cartridge. The cartridge is  dried under vacuum, and adsorbed analytes are removed by elution with  ethyl acetate followed by dichloromethane/methanol (7:3, volume/volume).  Water is removed from the ethyl acetate fraction on an anhydrous sodium  sulfate column. The combined fractions are solvent exchanged into  acetonitrile, evaporated by use of a nitrogen stream, and derivatized by  use of N- methyl-N-(tert-butyldimethylsilyl)- trifluoroacetamide. The  derivatized extracts are analyzed by capillary-column gaschromatography/electron-impact mass spectrometry in the scan mode.  Estimated method detection limits range from 0.03 to 0.07 micrograms per  liter. The mean recoveries of all analytes and surrogates determined at  0.74 to 0.82 micrograms per liter in reagent water in soil pore water  were 94 percent and 98 percent, respectively. The mean recoveries of all  analytes and surrogates determined at 7.4 to 8.2 micrograms per liter in  reagent water and in soil pore water were 96 percent and 97 percent,respectively. Recoveries were 90 percent or higher, regardless of analyte  concentration or matrix composition, for all compounds excepthydroxyatrazine, whose recoveries were slightly lower (77 percent) at the  low concentration.","language":"ENGLISH","publisher":"U.S. Geological Survey ;\r\nBranch of Information Services [distributor],","doi":"10.3133/ofr96459","issn":"0094-9140","usgsCitation":"Carter, D., 1996, Determination of atrazine and its major degradation products in soil pore water by solid-phase extraction, chemical derivatization, and gas chromatography/mass spectrometry: U.S. Geological Survey Open-File Report 96-459, v, 12 p. :ill. ;28 cm., https://doi.org/10.3133/ofr96459.","productDescription":"v, 12 p. :ill. ;28 cm.","costCenters":[],"links":[{"id":153653,"rank":0,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1996/0459/report-thumb.jpg"},{"id":52125,"rank":300,"type":{"id":11,"text":"Document"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1996/0459/report.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}}],"noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e4aa8e4b07f02db6678bb","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Carter, D.S.","contributorId":50170,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Carter","given":"D.S.","email":"","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":188656,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1}]}}
