The chain cuts obliquely across the older Cretaceous structural patterns of that sea floor. While the pattern of the chain as a whole is linear, the individual volcanoes lie on short, sigmoidal, en echelon loci that are subparallel with respect to each other and that may represent extensional features in the crust and upper mantle. In general, the order of eurption progressed from northwest to southeaśt along the chain, but the rate of progression of volcanism along individual loci is nonlinear where best studied in the southeastern part of the chain. Furthermore, simultaneous eruptions appear to have occurred within a distance along the chain of about 200 to 400 km. The available data are consistent with a genesis related to the motion of the Pacific crust over a melting spot in the mantle. This melting spot, which may be due to either excess heat or pressure release, appears to have a diameter of about 300 km and is presently centered slightly north of the island of Hawaii. We concur with the idea that the bend in the Hawaiian-Emperor chain probably reflects a significant change in the motion of the Pacific plate. Our best estimate of the age of the Hawaiian-Emperor bend, based on the existing radiometric data, is 24.6 ± 2.5 m.y., which correlates with a time of increased tectonic activity in the western Pacific island arcs and along the northern and eastern boundaries of the Pacific plate. The vector change in the motion of the Pacific plate (with respect to the melting spot) that is required to produce the bend is about 12 cm/yr in a west-southwest-ward direction. © 1972, The Geological Society of America, Inc.
","language":"English","publisher":"Geological Society of America","doi":"10.1130/0016-7606(1972)83[601:HCAIRT]2.0.CO;2","issn":"00167606","usgsCitation":"Jackson, E., Silver, E.A., and Dalrymple, G.B., 1972, Hawaiian-emperor chain and its relation to cenozoic circumpacific tectonics: Geological Society of America Bulletin, v. 83, no. 3, p. 601-618, https://doi.org/10.1130/0016-7606(1972)83[601:HCAIRT]2.0.CO;2.","productDescription":"18 p. Potassium-argon dating indicates that the minimum time between eruptions of individual but genetically related ash-flow cooling units is on the order of 0.8 m.y. As this interval is long in comparison with the secular variation of the direction of the geomagnetic field, in a given volcanic province the direction of natural thermoremanent magnetization is a unique characteristic of each cooling unit. Ash-flow sheets investigated include the Stone Cabin Formation, the tuff of Pancake Summit, the Windous Butte Formation, the Needles Range Formation, the Bates Mountain Tuff, and the tuff of Clipper Gap, of Oliogcene to early Miocene age. The deuterium content in snow cores collected at the end of each winter at the same sites, which represents the total snowfall of each interval, shows a depletion in 1968-69 of approximately 20 per mil. The higher snowfall in 1968-69 and the depletion of deuterium can be explained by an uncommonly strong westward flow of cold air over and down the western slopes of the Sierras, which interacted with an eastward flow of moist Pacific air that overrode and mixed with the cold air; this resulted in precipitation that occurred in greater than normal amounts and at a lower than normal temperature. Pluvial periods of the Pleistocene may have had the same shift in air-mass trajectory as the wet 1968-69 year. Snow cores collected in the normal 1970-71 winter have deuterium concentrations that resemble those of the normal 1969-70 winter. Small and nonsystematic differences in samples from these two normal winters are due to variations in climatic character as well as to factors inherent in the sampling sites.","language":"English","publisher":"American Association for the Advancement of Science","doi":"10.1126/science.176.4036.790","issn":"00368075","usgsCitation":"Friedman, I., and Smith, G., 1972, Deuterium content of snow as an index to winter climate in the Sierra Nevada area: Science, v. 176, no. 4036, p. 790-793, https://doi.org/10.1126/science.176.4036.790.","productDescription":"4 p.","startPage":"790","endPage":"793","costCenters":[],"links":[{"id":218851,"rank":1,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/thumbnails/outside_thumb.jpg"}],"country":"United States","state":"California, Nevada","geographicExtents":"{\n  \"type\": \"FeatureCollection\",\n  \"features\": [\n    {\n      \"type\": \"Feature\",\n      \"properties\": {},\n      \"geometry\": {\n        \"coordinates\": [\n          [\n            [\n              -120.20332154938339,\n              38.685285646134076\n            ],\n            [\n              -120.20332154938339,\n              37.7390228675344\n            ],\n            [\n              -117.59050221328755,\n              37.7390228675344\n            ],\n            [\n              -117.59050221328755,\n              38.685285646134076\n            ],\n            [\n              -120.20332154938339,\n              38.685285646134076\n            ]\n          ]\n        ],\n        \"type\": \"Polygon\"\n      }\n    }\n  ]\n}","volume":"176","issue":"4036","noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"505a0003e4b0c8380cd4f52e","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Friedman, I.","contributorId":95596,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Friedman","given":"I.","email":"","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":358286,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1},{"text":"Smith, G.I.","contributorId":103694,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Smith","given":"G.I.","email":"","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":358287,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":2}]}}

Territory boundaries often conformed to natural physical boundaries and appeared to be maintained through some nonaggressive behavior mechanism. Individual foxes traveled extensively throughout the family territory each night. Fox territories appeared to range from approximately 1 to 3 square miles in size, dependent largely on population density. Red foxes used a sequence of dens to rear their pups, and the amount and location of food remains at individual dens changed as the pups matured. The denning season was divided into pre-emergence, confined-use, and dispersed-use periods of 4 to 5 weeks each. Remains of adult waterfowl were collected at rearing dens on six townships in three ecologically different regions of eastern North Dakota. Remains of 172 adult dabbling ducks and 16 adult American coots (Fulica americana) were found at 35 dens. No remains from diving ducks were found. The number of adult ducks per den averaged 1.6, 5.9, and 10.2 for paired townships in regions with relatively low, moderate and high duck populations, respectively. Eighty-four percent of the ducks were females. The species and sex composition of ducks found at dens during early and late sampling periods reflected the nesting chronology of prairie dabbling ducks. Occupied rearing dens were focal points of red fox travel, and the locations of dens may have had considerable influence on predation. Thirty-five of 38 dens found on the six township study areas were on pastured or idle lands. The distribution of rearing dens on the Sand Lake and Arrowwood national wildlife refuges suggested that, on these areas, fox dens were concentrated because of the topography and land-use practices.
","language":"English","publisher":"Wiley","doi":"10.2307/3799055","usgsCitation":"Sargeant, A., 1972, Red fox spatial characteristics in relation to waterfowl predation: Journal of Wildlife Management, v. 36, no. 2, p. 225-236, https://doi.org/10.2307/3799055.","productDescription":"12 p.","startPage":"225","endPage":"236","costCenters":[{"id":480,"text":"Northern Prairie Wildlife Research Center","active":true,"usgs":true}],"links":[{"id":133755,"rank":1,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/thumbnails/outside_thumb.jpg"}],"country":"United States","state":"Minnesota","county":"Anoka County, Isanti County","otherGeospatial":"Cedar Creek Natural History Area","geographicExtents":"{\"type\":\"FeatureCollection\",\"features\":[{\"type\":\"Feature\",\"geometry\":{\"type\":\"Polygon\",\"coordinates\":[[[-93.0186,45.4131],[-93.0188,45.2984],[-93.0207,45.1258],[-93.2262,45.1255],[-93.2272,45.0373],[-93.2814,45.0374],[-93.2807,45.0498],[-93.2814,45.0539],[-93.2826,45.0584],[-93.2826,45.063],[-93.282,45.0666],[-93.282,45.0689],[-93.2813,45.0717],[-93.2794,45.0753],[-93.2781,45.0794],[-93.2787,45.0835],[-93.28,45.0867],[-93.28,45.0913],[-93.2799,45.0959],[-93.2786,45.1],[-93.2786,45.1036],[-93.2793,45.1064],[-93.2812,45.1077],[-93.2863,45.1119],[-93.2915,45.1155],[-93.2934,45.1187],[-93.2947,45.1215],[-93.296,45.1251],[-93.296,45.1274],[-93.296,45.1297],[-93.2985,45.1329],[-93.3011,45.1356],[-93.3024,45.1388],[-93.3056,45.1416],[-93.3076,45.1429],[-93.3127,45.1448],[-93.3179,45.1466],[-93.3211,45.1484],[-93.3257,45.1512],[-93.3302,45.1539],[-93.3328,45.1544],[-93.3347,45.1549],[-93.3373,45.1558],[-93.3399,45.1576],[-93.3431,45.1599],[-93.3463,45.1626],[-93.3495,45.1663],[-93.3528,45.1699],[-93.3553,45.1727],[-93.3579,45.1745],[-93.3618,45.1759],[-93.3663,45.1768],[-93.3709,45.1777],[-93.3767,45.1805],[-93.3812,45.1832],[-93.3838,45.1855],[-93.3864,45.1878],[-93.3889,45.1892],[-93.3928,45.1914],[-93.3967,45.1933],[-93.4025,45.1956],[-93.4084,45.1965],[-93.4116,45.1983],[-93.4142,45.2001],[-93.4161,45.2038],[-93.418,45.2088],[-93.4193,45.2116],[-93.4226,45.2134],[-93.4252,45.2152],[-93.4264,45.2157],[-93.4297,45.2161],[-93.4362,45.217],[-93.4426,45.2166],[-93.4472,45.2161],[-93.4517,45.2157],[-93.4543,45.2175],[-93.4575,45.2203],[-93.4614,45.2234],[-93.4653,45.2257],[-93.4698,45.2257],[-93.4763,45.2253],[-93.4821,45.2248],[-93.4847,45.2257],[-93.4879,45.2271],[-93.4912,45.2289],[-93.4964,45.2344],[-93.5022,45.239],[-93.5035,45.2399],[-93.5073,45.2417],[-93.5113,45.2431],[-93.5138,45.2454],[-93.5093,45.4163],[-93.5106,45.5598],[-93.5133,45.7335],[-93.1408,45.7312],[-93.1392,45.5602],[-93.0221,45.5576],[-93.0186,45.4131]]]},\"properties\":{\"name\":\"Anoka\",\"state\":\"MN\"}}]}","volume":"36","issue":"2","noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e4a60e4b07f02db63538a","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Sargeant, A.B.","contributorId":13171,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Sargeant","given":"A.B.","email":"","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":310863,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1}]}}

No wood duck nesting had been recorded previously in the area. During May-July 1968, 253 ducklings, hand-reared at the Northern Prairie Wildlife Research Center near Jamestown, North Dakota, were released when 9 to 16 days old into a 0.5-acre enclosure on the refuge, where they grew to flight stage and departed. Seventy-eight nest houses were installed in August on the refuge. About 76 percent of the ducks survived until late September, when southward migration began. The first-year band recovery rate by hunters of 4.7 percent was comparable to that of wild immature wood ducks. Most recoveries occurred between North Dakota and Minnesota in the north and Texas and Louisiana in the south. There were 16 nesting attempts, which produced 175 ducklings, by homing female wood ducks in the boxes in 1969. The number of nesting attempts increased to 34 in 1970, with a production of 311 ducklings.
","language":"English","publisher":"Wiley","doi":"10.2307/3799073","usgsCitation":"Doty, H.A., and Kruse, A., 1972, Techniques for establishing local breeding populations of wood ducks: Journal of Wildlife Management, v. 36, no. 2, p. 428-435, https://doi.org/10.2307/3799073.","productDescription":"8 p.","startPage":"428","endPage":"435","costCenters":[{"id":480,"text":"Northern Prairie Wildlife Research Center","active":true,"usgs":true}],"links":[{"id":134507,"rank":1,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.er.usgs.gov/thumbnails/outside_thumb.jpg"}],"country":"United States","state":"North Dakota","otherGeospatial":"Arrowwood National Wildlife Refuge","geographicExtents":"{\n  \"type\": \"FeatureCollection\",\n  \"features\": [\n    {\n      \"type\": \"Feature\",\n      \"properties\": {},\n      \"geometry\": {\n        \"type\": \"Polygon\",\n        \"coordinates\": [\n          [\n            [\n              -98.525390625,\n              47.37603463349758\n            ],\n            [\n              -97.14111328125,\n              47.37603463349758\n            ],\n            [\n              -97.14111328125,\n              47.98256841921405\n            ],\n            [\n              -98.525390625,\n              47.98256841921405\n            ],\n            [\n              -98.525390625,\n              47.37603463349758\n            ]\n          ]\n        ]\n      }\n    }\n  ]\n}","volume":"36","issue":"2","noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e4adce4b07f02db68618d","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Doty, Harold A.","contributorId":17565,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Doty","given":"Harold","email":"","middleInitial":"A.","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":311346,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1},{"text":"Kruse, A.D.","contributorId":19900,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Kruse","given":"A.D.","email":"","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":311347,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":2}]}}

In addition, linears of regional extent that may be structurally controlled can be seen, many of which have not yet been recognized in surface mapping. The synoptic view provided by the image brings into focus an orthogonal set of fractures trending north-northeast and east-southeast and not heretofore apparent in regional maps of Alaska. This orthogonal fracture set may reflect a conjugate set of fractures within the crust, which has exerted significant control over the geologic history of the state. Increased resolution in other images from space platforms, such as the resolution of 200 to 650 feet (60 to 200 m) planned for the satellite television cameras of the ERTS program, will permit the discernment of finer detail and a greater accuracy in identifying and locating geologic features.
","language":"English","publisher":"American Association for the Advancement of These data, together with surface-water data, were collected at sites shown on plate A and are, with exceptions discussed below, presented herein. The interpretation of these data will be published separately in Connecticut Water Resources Bulletin No. 24.\nAs defined for this investigation, the upper Connecticut River basin is a\n508-square-mile area in north-central Connecticut (see front cover and plate A)\ndrained by the Connecticut River and its tributaries including the Farmington\nRiver downstream from the community of Tariffville. The basin includes all or\nparts of the following 30 towns: Avon, Bloomfield, Bolton, Cromwell, East Granby,\nEast Hampton, East Hartford, East Windsor, Ellington, Enfield, Farmington,\nGlastonbury, Hartford, Manchester, New Brltain, Newington, Plainville, Portland,\nRocky Hill, Simsbury, Somers, South Windsor, Stafford, Suffield, Tolland, Vernon,\nWest Hartford, Wethersfield, Windsor, and Windsor Locks.\nThe data compiled for this investigation consist of those collected specifically\nfor the study during the period July 1967 - December 1969 and those\ncollected during previous investigations. Many records of wells and test holes in\nthus report were published in Connecticut Water Resources Bulletin No. 4. This\nreport is out of print, therefore these previously published records, together\nwith newer ones, are published in this report to provide a readily available\nsource of ground-water information. Large-scale farming operations in the area have used ground water as the major source of irrigation water for nearly three quarters of a century. In 1968, completion of the San Luis Canal part of the California Aqueduct, made surface water available to farmers. In time the widespread use of this imported water may cause chemical-quality changes in the native ground water. To document conditions prior to any possible changes, 361 samples of ground water were taken before deliveries of surface water were begun. The data will serve as a base to which future investigations can be compared. To establish any trends, the results were compared to earlier chemical data for the area. The results indicated that only minor changes in chemical quality had occurred between 1951 and 1968.

Water from an upper water-bearing zone is markedly different from water in a lower water-bearing zone. Water in the upper zone is of various chemical types, and the concentration of dissolved solids increases from east to west across the area.

Water in the lower zone is a sodium sulfate type and is fairly consistent throughout the zone.
","language":"English","publisher":"U.S. Geological Survey","doi":"10.3133/ofr7139","collaboration":"Prepared in cooperation with the California Department of Water Resources U.S. Bureau of Reclamation, and Westlands Water District","usgsCitation":"Bertoldi, G., 1971, Chemical quality of ground water in the Dos Palos-Kettleman City area, San Joaquin Valley, California: U.S. Geological Survey Open-File Report 71-39, 45 p., https://doi.org/10.3133/ofr7139.","productDescription":"45 p.","costCenters":[],"links":[{"id":429283,"rank":2,"type":{"id":11,"text":"Document"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1971/0039/report.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":162914,"rank":1,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1971/0039/report-thumb.jpg"}],"country":"United States","state":"California","city":"Dos Palos, Kettleman City","otherGeospatial":"San Joaquin Valley","geographicExtents":"{\n  \"type\": \"FeatureCollection\",\n  \"features\": [\n    {\n      \"type\": \"Feature\",\n      \"properties\": {},\n      \"geometry\": {\n        \"coordinates\": [\n          [\n            [\n              -120.68923886927595,\n              36.99619474770276\n            ],\n            [\n              -120.68923886927595,\n              35.97967811304345\n            ],\n            [\n              -119.91146897398625,\n              35.97967811304345\n            ],\n            [\n              -119.91146897398625,\n              36.99619474770276\n            ],\n            [\n              -120.68923886927595,\n              36.99619474770276\n            ]\n          ]\n        ],\n        \"type\": \"Polygon\"\n      },\n      \"id\": 0\n    }\n  ]\n}","noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e49dfe4b07f02db5e399e","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Bertoldi, G.L.","contributorId":11605,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Bertoldi","given":"G.L.","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":236526,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1}]}}

The basins in 1970 are agricultural land for the most part, but urban and industrial development is imminent as the Philadelphia metropolitan area expands. Hopefully, as changes caused by urbanization occur in future years, data published herein will be useful as a base for comparison.

Pickering Creek basin has a higher population than the upper East Branch Brandywine Creek basin. The two are comparable in discharge characteristics and in shapes and sizes of channels, but the Pickering Creek basin is producing a considerably larger suspended-sediment load. Also the effects of urbanization are discernible in some chemical parameters.

During the study, a small subbasin, one-half square mile in area, was converted from agricultural use to an industrial park. The Beaumont storage unit, centrally located in the agency area, is the largest in volume of the storage units. \r\n\r\nEstimated long-term average annual precipitation in the San Gorgonio Pass Water Agency drainage area is 332,000 acre-feet, and estimated average annual recoverable water is 24,000 acre-feet, less than 10 percent of the total precipitation. Estimated average annual surface outflow is 1,700 acre-feet, and estimated average annual ground-water recharge is 22,000 acre-feet. Projecting tack to probable steady-state conditions, of the 22.000 acre-feet of recharge, 16,003 acre-feet per year became subsurface outflow into Coachella Valley, 6,000 acre-feet into the Redlands area, and 220 acre-feet into Potrero Canyon. \r\n\r\nAfter extensive development, estimated subsurface outflow from the area in 1967 was 6,000 acre-feet into the Redlands area, 220 acre-feet into Potrero Canyon, and 800 acre-feet into the fault systems south of the Banning storage unit, unwatered during construction of a tunnel. Subsurface outflow into Coachella Valley in 1967 is probably less than 50 percent of the steady-state flow. An anticipated 17,000 .acre-feet of water per year will be imported by 1980. Information developed in this study indicates it is technically feasible to store imported water in the eastern part of the Beaumont storage unit without causing waterlogging in the storage area and without losing any significant quantity of stored water.","language":"ENGLISH","publisher":"U.S. G.P.O.,","doi":"10.3133/wsp1999D","usgsCitation":"Bloyd, R.M., 1971, Underground storage of imported water in the San Gorgonio Pass area, southern California: U.S. Geological Survey Water Supply Paper 1999, iv, 37 p. :ill., maps ;24 cm., https://doi.org/10.3133/wsp1999D.","productDescription":"iv, 37 p. :ill., maps ;24 cm.","costCenters":[],"links":[{"id":137996,"rank":0,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/wsp/1999d/report-thumb.jpg"},{"id":25684,"rank":400,"type":{"id":17,"text":"Plate"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/wsp/1999d/plate-1.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":25685,"rank":401,"type":{"id":17,"text":"Plate"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/wsp/1999d/plate-2.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":25686,"rank":300,"type":{"id":11,"text":"Document"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/wsp/1999d/report.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}}],"noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e479fe4b07f02db49307c","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Bloyd, Richard M.","contributorId":55802,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Bloyd","given":"Richard","email":"","middleInitial":"M.","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":143076,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1}]}}

This discharge, referred to as ground-water runoff or base runoff, is considered to be an index to the amount of g ound water available for development. A comparison of the variations of groundwater runoff and aquifer distribution in the basin shows that the areas of best development potential are areas where thick sand and gravel aquifers are adjacent to the streams. The average ground-water runoff for these areas is between 400,000 and 500,000 gallons per day per square mile.
\n
The most permeable aquifers in the basin are the sand and gravel deposits of Quaternary age. These aquifers occur mainly as relatively thick elongate bodies along bedrock valleys and as relatively thin sheetlike deposits at or near land surface. The representative hydraulic conductivity of these aquifers ranges from 1,500 to 2,500 gallons per day per square foot. The limestone and dolomite formations of the bedrock are a source of moderate quar tities of water.
\n
The long-term average streamflow in the basin is approximately 0.9 cubic feet per second per square mile. The yearly average discharge varies from about one-fourth to twice the long-term average. The 7-day 10-year low flow ranges from about 0.01 to 0.3 cubic feet per second per square mile; the main-stem flow ranges from 0.10 to 0.13 cubic feet per second per square mile.
\n
The water in the aquifers is predominately a very hard calcium bicarbonate type; it is generally high in iron and contains a moderate amount of dissolved solids. Fresh water (1,000 milligrams per liter dissolved solids or less) is present to depths of approximately 400 feet below land surface. In the tributaries and in the headwaters region of the White River, the composition of surface water is very similar to that of ground water. The quality cf the water in the White River deteriorates in the downstream direction owing to the cumulative effects of sewage effluent.
","language":"English","publisher":"U.S. Geological
