The Lahore Complex consists of a small altered mafic pluton intruded by the shoshonitic, alkalic monzonites of the Lahore Pluton (-450 Ma) that, in turn, is intruded by the calc-alkaline, granodioritic Ellisville Pluton (-440 Ma). These plutons were emplaced at about 760aC at a depth of 12 to 18 km within greenschist-facies rocks and are enclosed by contact-metamorphosed rocks.","language":"English","publisher":"U.S. Geological Water-level data are presented for 32 observation wells and 2 cave sites in the Black Hills area of western South Dakota. The wells are part of a network of observation wells maintained by the South Dakota Department of Environment and Natural Resources and are completed in various bedrock formations that are utilized as aquifers in the Black Hills area. Both cave sites are located within outcrops of the Madison Limestone. Data presented include site descriptions, hydrographs, and tabular data. Water- quality data are presented for 12 surface-water sites and 5 ground-water sites. Data presented include field parameters, bacteria counts, and concentrations of common ions, solids, nutrients, trace elements, radiometrics, cyanide, phenols, dissolved organic carbon, and suspended sediment. Spring data are presented for 83 springs and 21 stream reaches with significant springflow components. Potentially toxic substances, such as metals and pesticides, adsorb to sediment particles. The sediments on the bottom of the Bay provide the habitat for benthic communities which can ingest these substances and introduce them into the food web. The bottom sediments are also a reservoir of nutrients. The transport and fate of suspended sediment is an important factor in determining the transport and fate of the constituents adsorbed on the sediment. Suspended sediments also limit light availability in the bay, which limits photosynthesis and primary production, and deposit in ports and shipping channels, which require dredging. During three summer field seasons, duplicate Russian and American cores were taken at a number of sites in different sedimentary environments in the lake. Eight cores returned to the U.S. were quantitatively analyzed for biogenic silica using a single-step 5-hour alkaline leach, followed by dissolved silicon analysis by inductively-coupled-plasma atomic-emission spectroscopy. Sediments of Holocene age in these cores have biogenic silica maxima that range from about 15 to 80 percent. An underlying zone in each core with low biogenic-silica concentrations (0 to 5 percent) dates from the last glacial maximum. The transition from the last glaciation to the present interglaciation, recorded by biogenic silica, began about 13,000 years ago. Excess&nbsp;<sup>210</sup>Pb inventories in the shelf sediments show accumulations that are nearly in balance with the supply, even in areas of relict sands where it is believed that no net accumulation of sediment presently occurs. The&nbsp;<sup>210</sup>Pb distributions in shelf and slope water indicate that the two-way fluid exchange at the shelf-slope front and the net transport in the alongshore flow make comparatively small contributions to the shelf&nbsp;<sup>210</sup>Pb budget. The near balance between supply and decay of&nbsp;<sup>210</sup>Pb on the shelf implies a limit to the particle export flux. It is concluded that the export of particulate organic carbon does not exceed 60 g m<sup>&minus;2</sup>&nbsp;y<sup>&minus;1</sup>&nbsp;(&sim;25% of primary production) and is probably lower. The hypothesis is advanced that fine particulate matter introduced to the continental shelf is detained in its transit of the shelf because of bioturbational trapping in the sediment due to benthic animals. Distributions of&nbsp;<sup>210</sup>Pb in suspended particulate matter and in the fine fraction of shelf sediments suggest that the average fine particle must undergo several cycles of deposition-bioturbation-resuspension-redeposition and requires a number of decades for its transit and ultimate export from the shelf. These compounds may be a sink for metals, implying that once metals are bound to humic substances they are no longer available to food webs. A series of experiments was conducted to quantitatively examine this premise using 2 estuarine bivalves from San Francisco Bay, USA: the suspension feeder <i>Potarnocorbula arnurensis</i> and the facultative deposit feeder <i>Macoma balthica</i>. HA and FA, isolated from marine sediments, were bound as organic coatings to either hydrous ferric oxides (HFO) or silica particles. Cd and Cr(II1) were adsorbed to the organic coatings or directly to uncoated HFO and silica particles. Pulse-chase laboratory feeding expenments using <sup>109</sup>Cd and <sup>51</sup>Cr(III) were then conducted to determine absorption efficiencies of Cd and Cr for individual specimens using each of the particle types. The results demonstrated that: (1) absorption of Cr(I1I) from all types of non-living particles was consistently low (&lt; 11%). Ingested Cd showed greater bioavailability than Cr(IIl), perhaps due to differences in metal chemistry. (2) Bivalves absorbed Cd bound to uncoated HFO or silica particles (i.e. with no HA or FA present). (3) The presence of organic coatings on particles reduced Cd bioavailabhty compared with uncoated particles. (4) Both geochemical and biological conditions affected the food chain transfer of Cd. The data suggest that in marine systems inorganic and organic-coated particles are predominantly a sink for Cr in sediments. The T1 ribonuclease fingerprinttin method was used to compare the RNA genomes of 26 isolates of IHNV recovered from sockeye salmon (</span><i>Oncorhynchus nerka</i><span>), chinook salmon (</span><i>O. tshawytscha</i><span>), and steelhead trout (</span><i>O. mykiss</i><span>) throughout the enzootic portion of western North America. Most of the isolates as a source of genetic variation. In from a single year (1987) to limit time of isolation as a source of genetic variation. In addition, isolates from different years collected at three sites were analyzed to investigate genetic drift or evolution of IHNV within specific locations. All of the isolates examined by T1 fingerprint analysis contained less than a 50% variation in spot location and were represented by a single fingerprint group. The observed variation was estimated to correspond to less than 5% variation in the nucleic acid sequence. However, sufficient variation was detected to separate the isolates into four subgroups which appeared to correlate to different geographic regions. Host species appeared not to be a significant source of variation. Normalized difference vegetation index (NDVI) data derived from the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration's Advanced Very High Resolution Radiometer (AVHRR) satellite sensor offer a means of efficiently and objectively evaluating phenological characteristics over large areas. Twelve metrics linked to key phenological events were computed based on time-series NDVI data collected from 1989 to 1992 over the conterminous United States. These measures include the onset of greenness, time of peak NDVI, maximum NDVI, rate of greenup, rate of senescence, and integrated NDVI. Measures of central tendency and variability of the measures were computed and analyzed for various land cover types. Results from the analysis showed strong coincidence between the satellite-derived metrics and predicted phenological characteristics. In particular, the metrics identified interannual variability of spring wheat in North Dakota, characterized the phenology of four types of grasslands, and established the phenological consistency of deciduous and coniferous forests. These results have implications for large-area land cover mapping and monitoring. The utility of remotely sensed data as input to vegetation mapping is demonstrated by showing the distinct phenology of several land cover types. More stable information contained in ancillary data should be incorporated into the mapping process, particularly in areas with high phenological variability. In a regional or global monitoring system, an increase in variability in a region may serve as a signal to perform more detailed land cover analysis with higher resolution Although the thickness of Zone NP 9-NP 10 strata is several times greater in the eastern Gulf Coastal Plain than in the Atlantic Coastal Plain, the hiatus that usually is present between these two zones in inner neritic strata is of longer duration in the Gulf Coast. Although 6 sequences are found in Zones NP 10-NP 11 in both the Atlantic and Gulf Coastal Plains, the number of sequences in each NP zone differs in the 2 areas.
