Direct evaluation of the adverse effects of every pesticide present in a given hydrologic system is beyond the scope and budget of most water-quality studies. Many studies rely on standards or guidelines set by federal or state agencies or other institutions to indicate what concentrations may have adverse effects on human health, aquatic organisms, or wildlife. Such standards and guidelines generally are based on laboratory or field studies that document the effects of individual pesticides on specific aspects of water quality. Single-species toxicity tests (using a single species of a test organism) under various laboratory conditions are the most common type of study, whereas artificial ecosystem studies (using multiple species of a test organism) and field studies are relatively uncommon. Such studies rarely consider the effects of exposure to more than one chemical at a time. Although several declines have been well-documented, other declines are anecdotal or hypothesized. Most documented declines are of ranid frogs or toads (Bufo). Species from montane habitats and those occurring in California have been best studied. Status of many desert species is unknown. Habitat destruction and introduced predators are the most common threats to amphibian populations. Some declines may represent natural variation in population size. Causes have not been determined for several cases where common species have declined over large areas. There are important considerations for ecosystem management, whether changes in amphibian populations are natural or caused by human activities. Causes for declines must be known so that management can be prescribed (or proscribed) to eliminate or minimize these causes. The natural variability of amphibian population numbers and the complexity of metapopulation structure emphasize the necessity of considering multiple temporal and spatial scales in ecosystem management. The decline of amphibian species throughout the world has received considerable recent attention (e.g., Blaustein and Wake 1990, Griffiths and Beebee 1992, Yoffe 1992). Much of this attention derives from a workshop held in February, 1990 on declining amphibians sponsored by the National Research Council Board (NRC) on Biology in Irvine, California (Barinaga 1990, Borchelt 1990). Because of media attention in the aftermath of this conference, it is a popular perception that amphibian declines are a new phenomenon that herpetologists have been slow to recognize (Griffiths and Beebee 1992, Quammen 1993). However, concern about amphibian populations in the United States dates back over 20 years. Beginning in the 1960s, a large, well-documented decline of northern leopard frogs (Rana pipiens) occurred in the upper Midwest (Gibbs et al. 1971, Hine, 1981, Rittshof 1975).","largerWorkTitle":"Sustainable ecological systems: implementing an ecological approach to land management","language":"English","publisher":"U.S. Forest Service, Rocky Mountain Forest and Range Experiment Station","publisherLocation":"Fort Collins, CO","usgsCitation":"Corn, P.S., 1994, What we know and don't know about amphibian declines in the West, 9 p.","productDescription":"9 p.","startPage":"59","endPage":"67","numberOfPages":"9","costCenters":[{"id":289,"text":"Forest and Rangeland Ecosys Science Center","active":true,"usgs":true}],"links":[{"id":295389,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/thumbnails/outside_thumb.jpg"},{"id":371557,"rank":2,"type":{"id":11,"text":"Document"},"url":"https://www.fs.fed.us/rm/pubs_rm/rm_gtr247.pdf"}],"noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"5440de49e4b0b0a643c73323","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Corn, Paul Stephen 0000-0002-4106-6335","orcid":"https://orcid.org/0000-0002-4106-6335","contributorId":31693,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Corn","given":"Paul","email":"","middleInitial":"Stephen","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":503344,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1}]}}

They graphically illustrate the potential danger to our schools, and to the welfare of our children, that results from major earthquakes.  The slides range from Algeria, where a collapsed school roof is held up only by students' desks; to Anchorage, Alaska, where an elementary school structure has split in half; to California and other areas, where school buildings have sustained damage to walls, roofs, and chimneys.</p>\n<br/>\n<p>Interestingly, all the United States earthquakes depicted in this set of slides occurred either on a holiday or before or after school hours, except the 1935 tremor in Helena, Montana, which occurred at 11:35 am.  It undoubtedly would have caused casualties had the schools not been closed days earlier by Helena city officials because of a damaging foreshock.  Students in Algeria, the People's Republic of China, Armenia, and other stricken countries were not so fortunate.</p>\n<br/>\n<p>This set of slides represents 17 destructive earthquakes that occurred in 9 countries, and covers more than a century--from 1886 to 1988.  Two of the tremors, both of which occurred in the United States, were magnitude 8+ on the Richter Scale, and four were magnitude 7-7.9.  The events represented by the slides (see table below) claimed more than a quarter of a million lives.</p>","language":"English","publisher":"National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration","usgsCitation":"McCullough, H., 1994, Earthquake damage to schools, Report: 6 p.; 20 plates.","productDescription":"Report: 6 p.; 20 plates","numberOfPages":"19","temporalStart":"1886-01-01","temporalEnd":"1988-12-31","costCenters":[],"links":[{"id":290153,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/thumbnails/outside_thumb.jpg"},{"id":290152,"type":{"id":11,"text":"Document"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/unnumbered/70114620/report.pdf"}],"noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"53ad40efe4b0729c154181be","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"McCullough, Heather","contributorId":96595,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"McCullough","given":"Heather","email":"","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":495356,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1}]}}

Traps (described below) can be pitfalls, funnel traps, or a combination of the two.</p>\n<br/>\n<p>Drift fences with pitfall or funnel traps and pitfall traps without fences are used commonly to inventory and monitor populations of amphibians and reptiles. For example, 9 of 17 field studies reported for management of terrestrial vertebrates (Sarzo et al. 1988) used these techniques to sample amphibians. Drift fences with pitfall traps can be used to determine species richness at a site and to detect the presence of rare species. They also can yield data on relative abundances and habitat use of selected species.</p>\n<br/>\n<p>Pitfall traps arrayed in a grid without fences can also be used to study the population ecology and habitat use of selected species. Population density can be estimated with this latter technique if used in conjunction with mark-recapture techniques (see Chapter 8). Drift fence arrays or pitfall grids can be left in place for long-term monitoring.</p>\n<br/>\n<p>In this section, I discuss the use of this technique to obtain data on amphibians away from breeding ponds. Use of drift fences and traps to monitory amphibian activity at breeding ponds is discussed in the section \"Drift Fences Encircling Breeding Sits\", below (technique 9). Some materials and procedures are common to both techniques. Total harvest during the 12-month survey period was estimated to be 570 metric tons, and included 15 mussel species. The most frequently harvested species were the washboard Megalonaias nervosa. Ohio pigtoe Pleurobema cordatum, and butterfly Ellipsaria lineolata. Harvest peaked in June at 290,414 mussels. Among collection techniques, total estimated effort was highest for divers (71,160 musseler-hours). The total estimated value of the 12-month mussel harvest (in terms of money paid to harvesters) from Wheeler Reservoir was US$2,119,921.","largerWorkType":{"id":2,"text":"Article"},"largerWorkTitle":"Journal of Freshwater Ecology","largerWorkSubtype":{"id":10,"text":"Journal Article"},"language":"English","publisher":"Oikos Publishers","publisherLocation":"La Crosse, WI","doi":"10.1080/02705060.1994.9664901","usgsCitation":"Bowen, Z.H., Malvestuto, S.P., Davies, W.D., and Crance, J.H., 1994, Evaluation of the mussel fishery in Wheeler Reservoir, Tennessee River: Journal of Freshwater Ecology, v. 9, no. 4, p. 313-316, https://doi.org/10.1080/02705060.1994.9664901.","productDescription":"4 p.","startPage":"313","endPage":"316","numberOfPages":"4","costCenters":[],"links":[{"id":295387,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/thumbnails/outside_thumb.jpg"},{"id":295386,"type":{"id":10,"text":"Digital Object Identifier"},"url":"https://dx.doi.org/10.1080/02705060.1994.9664901"}],"country":"United States","state":"Alabama","otherGeospatial":"Wheeler Reservoir","volume":"9","issue":"4","noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"5440de2be4b0b0a643c732d3","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Bowen, Zack H.","contributorId":39308,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Bowen","given":"Zack","email":"","middleInitial":"H.","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":503339,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1},{"text":"Malvestuto, S.
