This map shows thermal-alteration indices (TAI's), based on colors of pollen grains, of 115 outcrop and 20 conventional core samples from Mesozoic and lower Tertiary rocks in the southern Coast and western Transverse Ranges, Southwestern California. The TAI's have been calibrated against previously determined vitrinite reflectance values from some of the same sample localities.
\nSouth of the Santa Ynez fault, the TAI's of exposed rocks near the fault are mainly between 2+ and 3– (2+/3–) to 3 and are generally in the early stage of thermal maturity with respect to the possible generation of oil. North of the Santa Ynez fault, the exposed rocks have TAI's mostly of 2 to 2+ and are mainly immature or transitional from immature to mature. However, Jurassic(?) and Lower Cretaceous samples from the central San Rafael Mountains have distinctly higher TAI's, similar to those of rocks south of the Santa Ynez fault.

\nInterpretations are chiefly empirical, wherein magnetic anomalies characterizing known geologic features in the region are used as interpretive criteria for identifying such features where they are concealed. Identifying geologic environments favorable for mineral deposits is a primary objective of this report.

This is a region of relatively small mining districts and few mines, but occurrences of many different metals are widespread.
\nThe Mazatzal Mountains constitute the dominant physiographic feature of the wilderness. The eastern slopes of these mountains rise steeply from about 3,500 ft in altitude along the valley of Rye Creek east of the range, to 7,903 ft at Mazatzal Peak. To the west, the range slopes steeply from the crest then more gently along the lower flanks to the Werde River, one of the main drainage channels of Arizona. In the northern part of the wilderness, the East Werde River, a tributary of the Verde, occupies a deep canyon that separates the Mazatzal Mountains from mesas to the north. The lowest parts of the wilderness have altitudes of about 2,200 ft and are located near Bartlett Reservoir in the southwestern part of the area studied.
\nTwo aeromagnetic surveys were flown and interpreted to aid in the delineation of subsurface lithology and structure: one survey was flown at a low level (1,000 ft above ground) and the other at a high level (9,000 ft above sea level). In addition, the results of a small-scale electromagnetic (EM) survey are briefly discussed; the surface EM survey took place in an area of copper concentrations and past exploration activity to look for evidence of massive sulfide mineralization.
\nStudies of the geology, geochemistry (Marsh and others, 1983a, b, Erickson, 1984), mines and prospects (Ellis, 1982), and mineral resource potential (Wrucke and others, 1983) of the Mazatzal Wilderness and contiguous roadless areas have been published elsewhere.

Also included in the present study are nine areas adjoining the wilderness (see fig. 1), totaling 90,034 acres of recommended wilderness additions. All these lands are here collectively called the “study area.” Access to the study area is provided by generally well maintained trails from gravel or dirt roads along major valleys above Darrington, Marblemount, Stehekin, Holden, Trinity, and Lake Wnatchee. Other than the main access trails across a few passes (Cloudy Pass, Buck Creek Pass, White Pass, and Indian Pass), trails are rough, infrequently maintained, or nonexistent.

Included were geological, geochemical, and geophysical studies by the U.S. Geological Survey and investigation of known prospects and mines by the U.S. Bureau of Mines. The area of study is located in the Arapaho National Forest, nort of Interstate Highway 70, west of U.S. Highway 40, and east of the Blue River, on the west side of the Front Range (fig. 1).

(see index map). Samples of water were collected from 84 streams and 18 springs draining the study area. Tabulations of the analyses and a sample locality map are in Ficklin and others (1984). The geochemistry of stream sediments and panned concentrates of the study area is in Nowlan and Gerstel (1985). The geology of the study area and vicinity is in Hedlund (1985). The mineral resource potential of the study area is described in Hedlund and others (1983). This report (1) assists in the assessment of the mineral resource potential of the Buffalo Peaks Wilderness Study Area; and (2) compares analyses of water samples with analyses of stream-sediment and panned-concentrate samples (Nowlan and Gerstel, 1985).
