New fault scarps, fissures, cracks, and flexures appeared in bedrock and unconsolidated surficial deposits along or near the fault traces. Average strike of the faults is between N. 37° E. and N. 47° E.; they dip northwest at angles ranging from 50° to 85°. The dominant motion was dip slip; the blocks northwest of the reactivated faults were relatively upthrown, and both blocks were upthrown relative to sea level. No other earthquake faults have been found on land.\n\nThe Patton Bay fault on land is a complex system of en echelon strands marked by a series of spectacular landslides along the scarp and (or) by a zone of fissures and flexures on the upthrown block that locally is as much as 3,000 feet wide. The fault can be traced on land for 22 miles, and it has been mapped on the sea floor to the southwest of Montague Island an additional 17 miles. The maximum measured vertical component of slip is 20 to 23 feet and the maximum indicated dip slip is about 26 feet. A left-lateral strike-slip component of less than 2 feet occurs near the southern end of the fault on land where its strike changes from northeast to north. Indirect evidence from the seismic sea waves and aftershocks associated with the earthquake, and from the distribution of submarine scarps, suggests that the faulting on and near Montague Island occurred at the northeastern end of a reactivated submarine fault system that may extend discontinuously for more than 300 miles from Montague Island to the area offshore of the southeast coast of Kodiak Island.\n\nThe Hanning Bay fault is a minor rupture only 4 miles long that is marked by an exceptionally well defined almost continuous scarp. The maximum measured vertical component of slip is 16⅓ feet near the midpoint, and the indicated dip slip is about 20 feet. There is a maximum left-lateral strike-slip component of one-half foot near the southern end of the scarp. Warping and extension cracking occurred in bedrock near the midpoint on the upthrown block within about 1,000 feet of the fault scarp.\n\nThe reverse faults on Montague Island and their postulated submarine extensions lie within a tectonically important narrow zone of crustal attenuation and maximum uplift associated with the earthquake. However, there are no significant lithologic differences in the rock sequences across these faults to suggest that they form major tectonic boundaries. Their spatial distribution relative to the regional uplift associated with the earthquake, the earthquake focal region, and the epicenter of the main shock suggest that they are probably subsidiary features rather than the causative faults along which the earthquake originated.\n\nApproximately 70 percent of the new breakage along the Patton Bay and the Hanning Bay faults on Montague Island was along obvious preexisting active fault traces. The estimated ages of undisturbed trees on and near the fault trace indicate that no major disc placement had occurred on these faults for at least 150 to 300 years before the 1964 earthquake.","largerWorkType":{"id":18,"text":"Report"},"largerWorkTitle":"The Alaska earthquake, March 27, 1964: Regional effects (Professional Paper 543)","largerWorkSubtype":{"id":5,"text":"USGS Numbered Series"},"language":"English","publisher":"U.S. Government Printing Office","publisherLocation":"Washington, D.C.","doi":"10.3133/pp543G","usgsCitation":"Plafter, G., 1967, Surface faults on Montague Island associated with the 1964 Alaska earthquake: U.S. Geological Survey Professional Paper 543, Report: vi, 42 p.; 2 Plates: 39.12 x 23.99 inches and 29.95 x 16.39 inches, https://doi.org/10.3133/pp543G.","productDescription":"Report: vi, 42 p.; 2 Plates: 39.12 x 23.99 inches and 29.95 x 16.39 inches","numberOfPages":"50","costCenters":[{"id":380,"text":"Menlo ParkCalif. Effects on air transportation were minor as compared to those on the water, highway, and railroad transport systems. A few planes were damaged or wrecked by seismic vibration or by flooding. Numerous airport facilities were damaged by vibration or by secondary effects of the earthquake, notably seismic sea and landslide-generated waves, tectonic subsidence, and compaction. Nearly all air facilities were partly or wholly operational within a few hours after the earthquake. The earthquake inflicted enormous damage on the shipping industry, which is indispensable to a State that imports fully 90 percent of its requirements—mostly by water—and whose largest single industry is fishing. Except for those of Anchorage, all port facilities in the earthquake-affected area were destroyed or made inoperable by submarine slides, waves, tectonic uplift, and fire. No large vessels were lost, but more than 200 smaller ones (mostly crab or salmon boats) were lost or severely damaged. Navigation aids were destroyed, and hitherto well-known waterways were greatly altered by uplift or subsidence. All these effects wrought far-reaching changes in the shipping economy of Alaska, many of them to its betterment. Virtually all utilities and communications in south-central Alaska were damaged or wrecked by the earthquake, but temporary repairs were effected in remarkably short times. Communications systems were silenced almost everywhere by loss of power or by downed lines; their place was quickly taken by a patchwork of self-powered radio transmitters. A complex power-generating system that served much of the stricken area from steam, diesel, and hydrogenerating plants was disrupted in many places by vibration damage to equipment and by broken transmission lines. Landslides in Anchorage broke gas-distribution lines in many places, but the main transmission line from the Kenai Peninsula was virtually undamaged. Petroleum supplies were disrupted, principally by breakage or loss of storage tanks caused by seismic vibration, slides, waves, and fire. Water-supply and sewer lines were also broken in many towns.","largerWorkType":{"id":18,"text":"Report"},"largerWorkTitle":"The Alaska earthquake, March 27, 1964: effects on transportation, communications, and utilities (Professional Paper 545)","largerWorkSubtype":{"id":5,"text":"USGS Numbered Series"},"language":"English","publisher":"U.S. Government Printing Office","publisherLocation":"Washington, D.C.","doi":"10.3133/pp545B","usgsCitation":"Eckel, E.B., 1967, Effects of the earthquake of March 27, 1964, on air and water transport, communications, and utilities systems in south-central Alaska: U.S. Geological Survey Professional Paper 545, vi, 27 p., https://doi.org/10.3133/pp545B.","productDescription":"vi, 27 p.","numberOfPages":"35","costCenters":[{"id":380,"text":"Menlo ParkCalif. The McCann Hill Chert apparently rests disconformably on graptolitic shale of the Road River Formation that has a succession of graptolite zones ranging in age from Ordovician to possibly Early Devonian.

The Devonian succession along the Porcupine River, 170 miles north of the Yukon River locality, consists of 600 feet of Salmon-trout Limestone, overlain by 200 feet of unnamed shale and about 500 feet of unnamed dolomite. The Salmontrout Limestone rests accordantly and probably conformably on graptolitic shale with Monograptus hercynicus of Late Silurian or Early Devonian age, and the dolomite is overlain unconformably by limestone and shale of Carboniferous age.

Tentaculitid faunas from the top of the Salmontrout Limestone and from the basal limestone and shale member of the McCann Hill Chert are similar and indicate that the units are partly correlative. The faunas, and those from the underlying graptolitic shales, also suggest that sedimentation in this area of Alaska was nearly continuous from Late Silurian into the Earliest Devonian, and that there is little record of Caledonian earth movements.

The stratigraphy of the Porcupine River area is not as yet well enough established to determine if rocks equivalent in age to the Nation River Formation are present, were once present and have since been eroded, or were never deposited.

Pillow basalt and andesitic breccia, although closely associated with Devonian limestone in the western part of the Yukon-Porcupine Rivers area, seem only structurally related and of different age.

Devonian rocks in southern and southeastern Alaska consist of several thousand feet of graywacke, shale and volcanic rocks deposited in the northern Cordilleran geosyncline. The ages presented in this paper indicate the following Mesozoic and Tertiary plutonic events: Middle or Late Jurassic (144–164 m.y.); Early Cretaceous (103–117 m.y.); Eocene (42–48 m.y.); and Oligocene to Miocene (24–31 m.y.). The present data show no distinctive a real pattern for the Mesozoic plutons, but those of known Tertiary age are restricted to Baranof and Kruzof islands, a distribution that suggests a belt of Tertiary plutonism along the margin of the Pacific Ocean.

Stratigraphic evidence and radiometric ages indicate that Baranof Island and possibly Chichagof Island have been uplifted several kilometers since Miocene time, whereas Admiralty Island to the east appears to have been relatively stable since Paleocene time. This movement apparently took place on the north-striking Chatham Strait fault, which separates the islands, and probably also had a large right-lateral component. Northwest-striking faults in Chichagof and Baranof islands were probably active during at least part of the movement on the Chatham Strait fault. Movement on one of the northwest-striking faults, the Patterson Bay fault of Baranof Island, took place some time between the Eocene and the Miocene and produced a 5-km, right-lateral separation.

The inferred uplift of Baranof Island relative to Admiralty Island is based on the present-day exposure on Baranof Island of mesozonal Tertiary plutons, which were probably intruded at a depth of several kilometers, contrasted with the present-day exposure on Admiralty Island of continental sedimentary and volcanic rocks that were being deposited near sea level during the Tertiary. The uplift of the Baranof Island plutons to the surface in post-Miocene time contrasts sharply with the stable or weakly negative tectonic conditions that have prevailed on Admiralty Island since the Paleocene.
","language":"English","publisher":"GSA","doi":"10.1130/0016-7606(1967)78[511:PRAATR]2.0.CO;2","usgsCitation":"Loney, R.A., Brew, D.A., and Lanphere, M.A., 1967, Post-paleozoic radiometric ages and their relevance to fault movements, Northern Southeastern Alaska: GSA Bulletin, v. 78, no. 4, p. 511-526, https://doi.org/10.1130/0016-7606(1967)78[511:PRAATR]2.0.CO;2.","productDescription":"16 p.","startPage":"511","endPage":"526","costCenters":[{"id":312,"text":"Geology, Minerals, Energy, and Geophysics Science Center","active":true,"usgs":true}],"links":[{"id":373712,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/thumbnails/outside_thumb.jpg"}],"country":"United States","state":"Alaska","otherGeospatial":"Northern Southeastern Alaska","geographicExtents":"{\n \"type\": \"FeatureCollection\",\n \"features\": [\n {\n \"type\": \"Feature\",\n \"properties\": {},\n \"geometry\": {\n \"type\": \"Polygon\",\n \"coordinates\": [\n [\n [\n -136.7138671875,\n 54.09806018306312\n ],\n [\n -131.94580078125,\n 54.09806018306312\n ],\n [\n -131.94580078125,\n 58.297944045474146\n ],\n [\n -136.7138671875,\n 58.297944045474146\n ],\n [\n -136.7138671875,\n 54.09806018306312\n ]\n ]\n ]\n }\n }\n ]\n}","volume":"78","issue":"4","noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Loney, R. It includes most of the Copper River Basin and parts of the surrounding Alaska Range and the Talkeetna, Chugach, and Wrangell Mountains.\n\nOn March 27, 1964, shortly after 5:36 p.m. Alaska standard time, a great earthquake having a Richter magnitude of about 8.5 struck south-central Alaska. Computations by the U.S. Coast and Geodetic Survey place the epicenter of the main shock at lat 61.1° N. and long 147.7° W., and the hypocenter, or actual point of origin, from 20 to 50 kilometers below the surface. The epicenter is near the western shore of Unakwik Inlet in northern Prince William Sound; it is 30 miles from the closest point within the area of study and 180 miles from the farthest point.\n\nReleveling data obtained in 1964 after the earthquake indicates that broad areas of south-central Alaska were warped by uplift and subsidence. The configuration of these areas generally parallels the trend of the major tectonic elements of the region. Presumably a large part of this change took place during and immediately after the 1964 earthquake.\n\nThe water level in several wells in the area lowered appreciably, and the water in many became turbid; generally, however, within a few days after the earthquake the water level returned to normal and the suspended sediment settled out. Newspaper reports that the Copper River was completely dammed and Tazlina Lake drained proved erroneous.\n\nThe ice on most lakes was cracked, especially around the margins of the lakes where floating ice broke free from the ice frozen to the shore. Ice on Tazlina, Klutina, and Tonsina Lakes was intensely fractured by waves generated by sublacustrine landslides off the fronts of deltas. These waves stranded large blocks of ice above water level along the shores. River ice was generally cracked in the southern half of the area and was locally cracked in the northern half.\n\nIn the area of study, the majority of the ground cracks occurred within a radius of 100 miles from the epicenter of the earthquake. Ground cracks formed in flood plains of rivers, in deltas, and along the toes of alluvial fans. They also occurred locally in low terraces adjacent to flood plains, in highway and other fill material, along the margins of lakes, along the faces of steep slopes of river bluffs and hillsides, and in areas cleared of vegetation for several years.\n\nThe ground cracks were restricted to areas underlain by unconsolidated deposits where one or more of the following conditions existed: (1) permafrost was absent or deep lying, (2) the ground-water table was near the surface, (3) bedrock was relatively deep lying, and (4) slopes were steep. Because the earthquake occurred in March, seasonal frost was present throughout the area.\n\nDespite the diversity of local conditions, the origin of most of the ground cracks can be explained by the following mechanisms: (1) lateral extension, caused by materials moving toward an unconfined face such as a lakeshore, river bluff, hillside, or terrace escarpment; (2) horizontal compaction, caused by repeated alternate compression and dilation (in the horizontal direction) of materials in flat-lying areas where there are no unconfined faces; (3) differential vertical compaction, caused by the shaking of materials that vary laterally in thickness or character; and (4) combinations of the above.\n\nSnowslides, avalanches, and rockslides were restricted to the mountainous areas surrounding the Copper River Basin. They were especially numerous in the Chugach Mountains which are closest to the epicenter of the earthquake. The large amount of snow and rock debris that has cascaded onto the icefield and glaciers of these mountains, and, probably even more important, the overall disturbance to the ice field will affect the regimen of the glaciers.\n\nMost of the damage to manmade structures occurred in the southern half of the area, and, primarily because of the sparsity of population and manmade structures, property damage was not great and no lives were lost.","largerWorkType":{"id":18,"text":"Report"},"largerWorkTitle":"The Alaska earthquake, March 27, 1964: regional effects (Professional Paper 543)","largerWorkSubtype":{"id":5,"text":"USGS Numbered Series"},"language":"English","publisher":"U.S. Geological Survey","publisherLocation":"Washington, D.C.","doi":"10.3133/pp543E","usgsCitation":"Ferrians, O.J., 1966, Effects of the earthquake of March 27, 1964, in the Copper River Basin area, Alaska: U.S. Geological Survey Professional Paper 543, v, 28 p., https://doi.org/10.3133/pp543E.","productDescription":"v, 28 p.","numberOfPages":"36","costCenters":[{"id":380,"text":"Menlo ParkCalif.
